Multiscale Nuclear-Electronic Orbital Quantum Dynamics in Complex Environments

Many renewable energy conversion processes rely on the movement of protons as well as electrons through either electrocatalysis or photoexcitation. The simulation of such processes requires a quantum mechanical description of coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics in a solvent or heterogeneous chemical environment. The overall objective of this project is the development of theoretical and computational capabilities for simulating nuclear-electronic quantum dynamics in complex environments and the creation of high-performance, open-source software. This multiscale framework will enable simulations of the real-time dynamics of nonequilibrium excited state proton-coupled electron transfer, quantum decoherence, vibronic energy transfer, and ultrafast radiolysis, as well as their associated time-resolved multidimensional spectroscopies. An important outcome of this project will be a sustainable, reusable, and interoperable open-source software ecosystem. This software will be designed for emerging exascale and future national leadership computers. Another key outcome will be a multiscale quantum dynamics method and software enabling simulations of nonequilibrium nuclear-electronic quantum dynamics in complex environments.

The EBEX Balloon-borne Experiment—Gondola, Attitude Control, and Control Software

The E and B Experiment (EBEX) was a long-duration balloon-borne instrument created to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. EBEX was the first balloon-borne instrument to implement a kilopixel array of transition edge sensor (TES) bolometric detectors and the first CMB experiment to use the digital version of the frequency domain multiplexing system for readout of the TES array. The scan strategy relied on 40 s peak-to-peak constant-velocity azimuthal scans. We report on the unique demands on the design and operation of the payload that resulted from these new technologies and the scan strategy. We describe the solutions implemented, including the development of a power system designed to provide a total of at least 2.3 kW, a cooling system to dissipate 590 W consumed by the detectors' readout system, software to manage and handle the data of the kilopixel array, and specialized attitude reconstruction software. We demonstrate flight performance data reflecting faultless management of the TES array, adequate powering and cooling of the readout electronics, and constraint of attitude reconstruction errors such that the spurious B-modes they induced were less than 10% of the CMB B-mode power spectrum with r = 0.05.

Data processing at the University of Kansas

Two systems for processing remotely sensed image data have been discussed. The first system, IDECS, is a near real-time hardware system oriented towards processing multi-image data sets quickly and economically. The IDECS has convenient film input and color display output capabilities and implements simple kinds of decision rules. The second system, KANDIDATS, is a software system capable of performing many of the more sophisticated processing methods. Because of its monitor which handles all bookkeeping and its modular design, KANDIDATS easily allows the testing of new automatic processing techniques. After a new technique has been proven on KANDIDATS, it may be simplified and hard-wired in IDECS, thereby keeping the volume processing of remotely sensed data always up to the current state-of-the-art.

Cost as a technology driver

Cost managment as a guiding factor in optimum development of technology, and proper timing of cost-saving programs in the development of a system or technology with payoffs in development and operational advances are discussed and illustrated. Advances enhancing the performance of hardware or software advances raising productivity or reducing cost, are outlined, with examples drawn from: thermochemical thrust maximization, development of cryogenic storage tanks, improvements in fuel cells for Space Shuttle, design of a spacecraft pyrotechnic initiator, cost cutting by reduction in the number of parts to be joined, and cost cutting by dramatic reductions in circuit component number with small-scale double-diffused integrated circuitry. Program-focused supporting research and technology models are devised to aid judicious timing of cost-conscious research programs.

MIDAS, prototype Multivariate Interactive Digital Analysis System for large area earth resources surveys. Volume 1: System description

A third-generation, fast, low cost, multispectral recognition system (MIDAS) able to keep pace with the large quantity and high rates of data acquisition from large regions with present and projected sensots is described. The program can process a complete ERTS frame in forty seconds and provide a color map of sixteen constituent categories in a few minutes. A principle objective of the MIDAS program is to provide a system well interfaced with the human operator and thus to obtain large overall reductions in turn-around time and significant gains in throughput. The hardware and software generated in the overall program is described. The system contains a midi-computer to control the various high speed processing elements in the data path, a preprocessor to condition data, and a classifier which implements an all digital prototype multivariate Gaussian maximum likelihood or a Bayesian decision algorithm. Sufficient software was developed to perform signature extraction, control the preprocessor, compute classifier coefficients, control the classifier operation, operate the color display and printer, and diagnose operation.

Maneuver analysis

The maneuver design for Viking was accomplished in two phases. First, there was the preflight design and strategy development that was dictated by mission objectives and requirements. Orbit determination and maneuver execution accuracy statistics were used, together with propellant budget considerations, to determine specific maneuver requirements and strategies. The second phase of the maneuver design occurred in flight. The maneuver analyses that were performed in flight, the software that was employed, and the actual inflight results for the entire orbital phase of the nominal Viking Mission are described with emphasis on prelanding objectives and geometry considerations. The actual adaptive design and implementation of the maneuvers as the mission progressed are considered. This design process included the minimization of both propellant usage and the effects of maneuver execution errors, while complying with several mechanization constraints.

McIDAS III - A modern interactive data access and analysis system

A powerful facility for meteorological analysis called the Man Computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS) was designed and implemented in the early 1970's at the Space Science and Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hardware and software experience gained via extensive use of that facility and its derivatives have led to a newer implementation of McIDAS on a larger computer with significant enhancements to the supporting McIDAS software. McIDAS allows remote and local access to a wide range of data from satellites and conventional observations, time lapse displays of imagery data, overlaid graphics, and current and past meteorological data. Available software allows one to perform analysis of a wide range of digital images as well as temperature and moisture sounding data obtained from satellites. McIDAS can generate multicolor composites of conventional and satellite weather data, radar and forecast data in a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional displays as well as time lapse movies of these analyses. These and other capabilities are described in this paper.

Centaur D-1A guidance/software system

The main body of this paper describes the evolution of the Centaur D-1A Guidance and Software System. Specifically, the performance of the explicit guidance equations, using a linear tangent steering law. Inherent flexibility exists in the equations in that they have multimission capability. They can accommodate both Earth-orbital and Earth-escape missions with either one or two Centaur burns. They can also guide for multi-burn orbital missions. The Centaur performance is indicated in terms of optimality (propellant usage), accuracy, flexibility and computer requirements. In the course of the Centaur Guidance development substantial changes and improvements have been made and more improvements are on the way for the Shuttle/Centaur Guidance. It is the intent of this paper to describe, provide insight into, and identify certain unique aspects of the individual Centaur flight profiles. Mission profile(s) are described narratively with some numerical data given in cases where it may be useful.
