Rb-Sr studies of CI and CM chondrites

Rb-Sr whole rock analyses have been performed on 2 CI and 3 CM chondrites. Four of these stones (Ivuna, Orgueil, Cold Bokkeveld and Erakot) were previously studied in this laboratory and were shown to be discordant from a 4.6 Gyr isochron. The fifth, Murchison, was not previously studied. The new data support the discordance of the first four stones, and indicate that Murchison is also discordant. Studies of Sr isotope ratios in unspiked Orgueil show that the discordance is not due to inhomogeneities in the Sr-84/Sr-86 ratio caused by incomplete mixing of nucleosynthesis products. In order to gauge the effects of weathering, two leaching experiments were performed on fresh, interior samples of Murchison; one for a period of 1.5 hr and the other for 117 hr. The results indicate that the relative solubility of nonradiogenic Sr is approximately twice that of Rb and radiogenic Sr is more soluble than the nonradiogenic Sr.

Transition of sounding-rocket experiments to Shuttle/Spacelab

Studies of the feasibility of using instruments of the type flown on balloons, sounding rockets, satellites, and Skylab ATM have led to the conclusion that sounding rocket instruments could be useful for conducting science experiments from space, both in their own right and in providing supporting data to other instruments observing the same object. Some engineering aspects of extending the viewing time from minutes to days are examined.

Ionosphere of Venus - First observations of day-night variations of the ion composition

Preliminary observations of day-night variations in the ion composition of the ionosphere of Venus, obtained by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter ion mass spectrometer experiment, are reported. A remarkable abundance and extent of ionization in the deep regions of the nightside ionosphere was observed, in spite of the long Venus night. A comparison of dayside and nightside ion distributions reveals a nightside composition similar in several respects to that of the dayside, with the ions O(+) and O2(+) forming the nightside F 2 and F 1 regions, respectively, as in the dayside. Important differences include a greater abundance of low-latitude ionization in the nightside, a significant increase of H(+) and NO(+) ions with increasing solar zenith angle, and extreme dynamic variability of the nightside region above 160 km. Ion composition data support the view that the nightside ionosphere can be maintained by the transport of ionization from the dayside.

X-ray and UV spectroscopy of Cygnus X-1 = HDE226868

Observations are presented of Cygnus X-1 with the solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory. The X-ray spectra of two intensity dips viewed near superior conjunction did not exhibit increased photoelectric absorption. Rather the data support a model in which an increase in the electron scattering optical depth modifies both the observed spectrum and the intensity. The characteristic temperature of the intervening material is greater than 5 x 10 to the 7th power K. These measurements were in part simultaneous with observations by IUE. The ultra violet spectrum and intensity remained relatively constant during an X-ray intensity dip.

The distribution of sodium in Io's cloud - Implications

Models for the distribution of sodium in Io's vicinity and in a disk in Io's orbital plane, compared with observational data, support the arguments that (1) Io is the source of the sodium; (2) sodium is ejected from the inside hemisphere and most of the high velocity sodium which is observed is ejected from the leading inside quadrant; (3) most of the sodium leads Io in Io's vicinity but follows Io at distances of more than Jupiter radii from Jupiter; (4) a significant fraction of the sodium flux is ejected at large angles with respect to Io's orbital plane; (5) the source velocity distribution has a pronounced high-velocity tail; and (6) impact ionization by electrons is significant at large distances from Io.

The Apollo 17 drill core - Petrologic systematics and the identification of a possible Tycho component

Modal data support a five-unit stratigraphy for the Apollo 17 drill core. The upper unit E (0-22 cm depth) is marked by high content of fused soil, brown glass, and mare basalt fragments. This unit corresponds with a portion of the core excavated and refilled within the last 2 m.y. The underlying unit D (22071 cm depth) has a low abundance of fused soil (i.e., low maturity) and is rich in coarse (less than 200 microns) mare fragments. A large section of the core, unit C (71-224 cm depth), is finer-grained, more mature (richer in agglutinates), more feldspathic and has more highland lithic, mineral and glass fragments than unit D. The next underlying unit, B (224-256 cm depth), has yellow/colorless KREEP glasses with a high Si, low-alkali composition unlike the common Apollo 15 or Apollo 17 KREEP series. The petrologic (fused soil) and Is/FeO maturity of this layer is also lower than the units above and below. The deepest unit, A (256-284 cm depth), is marked by its relatively higher maturity and lower yellow/colorless KREEP glass content. The most prominent petrographic/stratigraphic indicators are the pyroxene-rich immature mare unit D and the abundance of KREEP glass in unit B. This KREEP glass is distinctive petrographically and compositionally, and is probably exotic to the Apollo 17 site. It is suggested here that the KREEP glass in unit B is derived from Tycho, which implies widespread distribution of KREEP on the lunar nearside.

Observations of SO in dark and molecular clouds

The 1(0)-0(1) transition of SO at 30 GHz has been observed in several sources, including the first detection of sulfur monoxide in cold dark clouds without apparent internal energy sources. The SO transition appears to be an excellent tracer of structure in dark clouds, and the data support suggestions that self-absorption is important in determining emission profiles in such regions for large line-strength transitions. Column densities estimated from a comparison of the results for the two isotopic species indicate a high fractional abundance of SO in dark clouds.

The plane of symmetry of interplanetary dust in the inner solar system

Observations of the zodiacal light from the space probes Helios 1 and 2 between 1.0 and 0.3 AU show - superimposed on the general radial dependence - a systematic variation of brightness and brightness distribution with position in the orbit which is caused by the inclination of the symmetry plane of interplanetary dust with respect to the ecliptic. By suitable choice of the observing geometry, the inclination and the ascending node of the symmetry plane can be determined directly from the data without recourse to model calculations. The resulting values of i equals 3.0 plus or minus 0.3 deg, Omega equals 87 plus or minus 4 deg are not compatible with a concentration of interplanetary dust to the invariable plane of the solar system. The data support the simple view that the distribution of interplanetary dust in the inner solar system is characterized throughout by one plane of symmetry and suggest that this plane extends to at least 1 AU.

The ultraviolet spectrum and intensity remained relatively constant during an X-ray intensity dip.

User Documentation for Multiple Software Releases

In proposed solution to problems of frequent software releases and updates, documentation would be divided into smaller packages, each of which contains data relating to only one of several software components. Changes would not affect entire document. Concept would improve dissemination of information regarding changes and would improve quality of data supporting packages. Would help to insure both timeliness and more thorough scrutiny of changes.

Mitochondrial role in cell aging

The experimental studies on the mitochondria of insect and mammalian cells are examined with a view to an analysis of intrinsic mitochondrial senescence, and its relation to the age-related changes in other cell organelles. The fine structural and biochemical data support the concept that the mitochondria of fixed postmitotic cells may be the site of intrinsic aging because of the attack by free radicals and lipid peroxides originating in the organelles as a by-product of oxygen reduction during respiration. Although the cells have numerous mechanisms for counteracting lipid peroxidation injury, there is a slippage in the antioxidant protection. Intrinsic mitochondrial aging could thus be considered as a specific manifestation of oxygen toxicity. It is proposed that free radical injury renders an increasing number of the mitochondria unable to divide, probably because of damage to the lipids of the inner membrane and to mitochondrial DNA.

Detection of the J = 6 - 5 transition of carbon monoxide

The J = 6 - 5 rotational transition of carbon monoxide has been detected in emission from the KL 'plateau source' in the Orion molecular cloud. The corrected peak antenna temperature is 100 K, and the FWHM line width is 26 km/sec. These observations were carried out using the 3 m telescope of the NASA IRTF (Infrared Telescope Facility) on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and constitute the first astronomical data obtained at submillimeter wavelengths with a heterodyne system using a laser local oscillator. The data support the idea that the high-velocity dispersion CO in Orion is optically thin and set a lower limit to its temperature of approximately 180 K.

Observations of the two components of the Abell 98 cluster of galaxies

X-ray and optical observations of A98 show that the cluster is composed of two subclusters. From an estimate of the mass and velocity differences, the two components may merge in about a billion years. These data support the hierarchical clustering model in which clusters occur on all size scales, with larger clusters being formed from mergers of smaller ones.

X-ray studies of quasars with the Einstein Observatory. II

X-ray observations of 107 quasars have been carried out with the Einstein Observatory, and 79 have been detected. A correlation between optical emission and X-ray emission is found; and for radio-loud quasars, the data show a correlation between radio emission and X-ray emission. For a given optical luminosity, the average X-ray emission of radio-loud quasars is about three times higher than that of radio-quiet quasars. The data also suggest that the ratio of X-ray to optical luminosity is decreasing with increasing redshift and/or optical luminosity. The data support the picture in which luminosity evolution, rather than pure density evolution, describes the quasar behavior as a function of redshift.

Solar wind origin of Ar-36 on Venus

An examination is conducted concerning the circumstances under which the difference between earth and Venus (and Mars) fits naturally into theories in which the terrestrial planets formed by the gradual sweeping up of planetesimals in an essentially gas-free protoplanetary swarm. The primary purpose of the reported investigation is to use observational data to define restrictions on planetary formation theories that would be imposed if most of Venus' inert gases come from the solar wind. The observational data support the suggestion that the abundances of Ar, Kr, and Xe on Venus have been augmented by a component of solar composition. Solar wind implantation at an early stage of accumulation provides a natural way of producing the observed extreme heliocentric distribution of this component, provided that accumulation occurred after dissipation of solar gas from the solar nebula

High resolution X-ray and radio images of the Crab-like supernova remnant G21.5-0.9

The Crab-like supernova remnant G21.5-0.9 has been imaged at 6 cm wavelength with the VLA and between 0.1-4 keV with the Einstein Observatory. Both the X-ray and radio images show a centrally peaked distribution of extended emission with no indication of a pointlike component. In contrast, the linearly polarized radio emission is distributed in a ring with a distinct central minimum. The electric vectors of the polarized radio emission are oriented circumferentially. The data support a Crab-like model for G21.5-0.9, but one in which a lower percentage of the radiated flux is emitted as X-rays relative to the Crab Nebula.

Steam reforming of n-hexane on pellet and monolithic catalyst beds. A comparative study on improvements due to heat transfer

Monolithic catalysts with higher available active surface areas and better thermal conductivity than conventional pellets beds, making possible the steam reforming of fuels heavier than naphtha, were examined. Performance comparisons were made between conventional pellet beds and honeycomb monolith catalysts using n-hexane as the fuel. Metal-supported monoliths were examined. These offer higher structural stability and higher thermal conductivity than ceramic supports. Data from two metal monoliths of different nickel catalyst loadings were compared to pellets under the same operating conditions. Improved heat transfer and better conversion efficiencies were obtained with the monolith having higher catalyst loading. Surface-gas interaction was observed throughout the length of the monoliths.
