Joint map data/phase sequence estimation for trellis phase codes

A unified estimation procedure is formulated for the coherent detection of trellis phase codes, including partial response FM codes and multi-h codes. The unknown carrier phase is imbedded in the system state vector, and by simple augmentation of the decoder's state space, joint data and carrier estimation may be accomplished. The procedure is general to all trellis phase codes analyzed thus far. The effect of a static phase error on detection performance is also treated.

The impact of pulsed RFI on the coded BER performance of the nonlinear satellite communication channel

Communication links from low orbiting spacecraft to a central ground station, via satellite repeater, may be susceptible to significant performance degradation if high-level, pulsed radio frequency interference (RFI) must be contended with. The present paper examines the coded bit error rate (BER) performance of a communication system in which BPSK modulation is employed, pulsed CW or pulsed noise RFI is present, and the transponder contains a nonlinearity characterized by arbitrary AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics. A major result of this paper is an analytic method for determining soft decision statistics of the receiver demodulator output, in which pulsed RFI effects are accounted for. It is demonstrated that this result can be analytically applied to the approximate determination of the BER at the output of a Viterbi decoder, when convolutional coding is employed.

A bit transition density encoder for the Space Shuttle 2 MHz data channel

As a result of several unique factors, the 2 MHz data channel which carries science data from the various experiments aboard the Space Shuttle through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) lacks sufficient bit transition density to satisfy the bit synchronizer requirements at the ground station. It is noted that six encoding techniques were examined, and all but one, a PN cover sequence (Reset Bit Scrambler) were dismissed because of incompatibility with system constraints. The rationale behind the particular PN sequence chosen, the way it was truncated, and the new sequence properties are presented. The properties of the raw data stream are analyzed, as are the encoded sequence properties, including transition density. Diagrams of the encoder and decoder are included.

Asynchronous multiple-access channel capacity

The capacity region for the discrete memoryless multiple-access channel without time synchronization at the transmitters and receivers is shown to be the same as the known capacity region for the ordinary multiple-access channel. The proof utilizes time sharing of two optimal codes for the ordinary multiple-access channel and uses maximum likelihood decoding over shifts of the hypothesized transmitter words.

Memory-based frame synchronizer

A frame synchronizer for use in digital communications systems wherein data formats can be easily and dynamically changed is described. The use of memory array elements provide increased flexibility in format selection and sync word selection in addition to real time reconfiguration ability. The frame synchronizer comprises a serial-to-parallel converter which converts a serial input data stream to a constantly changing parallel data output. This parallel data output is supplied to programmable sync word recognizers each consisting of a multiplexer and a random access memory (RAM). The multiplexer is connected to both the parallel data output and an address bus which may be connected to a microprocessor or computer for purposes of programming the sync word recognizer. The RAM is used as an associative memory or decorder and is programmed to identify a specific sync word. Additional programmable RAMs are used as counter decoders to define word bit length, frame word length, and paragraph frame length.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Procedures were established to select quiet, least-disturbed MAGSAT data in an effort to study the magnetic field originating in the solid Earth. A preliminary map of scalar field anomalies over Canada and adjacent regions was produced. Data from Fort Churchill magnetic observatory (an auroral zone station) were used in classifying MAGSAT passes as quiet, unsettled, or disturbed. Determinations of long-term quiet levels at Canadian magnetic observatories are being made. For the time interval of each MAGSAT pass, the deviations of the mean hourly values of the magnetic field components are determined from these quiet levels, in particular for Fort Churchill. Primary processing all CHRONINT tapes received to date, involved decoding orbit records, decimating data records, selecting time intervals and latitude intervals, and producing output tapes carrying records with data point time, position and magnetic information. Subsequent processing converts the coordinate system from geocentric to geodetic and removes a reference field.

Control structures for high speed processors

A special processor was designed to function as a Reed Solomon decoder with throughput data rate in the Mhz range. This data rate is significantly greater than is possible with conventional digital architectures. To achieve this rate, the processor design includes sequential, pipelined, distributed, and parallel processing. The processor was designed using a high level language register transfer language. The RTL can be used to describe how the different processes are implemented by the hardware. One problem of special interest was the development of dependent processes which are analogous to software subroutines. For greater flexibility, the RTL control structure was implemented in ROM. The special purpose hardware required approximately 1000 SSI and MSI components. The data rate throughput is 2.5 megabits/second. This data rate is achieved through the use of pipelined and distributed processing. This data rate can be compared with 800 kilobits/second in a recently proposed very large scale integration design of a Reed Solomon encoder.

A study of universal modulation techniques applied to satellite data collection

A universal modulation and frequency control system for use with data collection platform (DCP) transmitters is examined. The final design discussed can, under software/firmwave control, generate all of the specific digital data modulation formats currently used in the NASA satellite data collection service and can simultaneously synthesize the proper RF carrier frequencies employed. A novel technique for DCP time and frequency control is presented. The emissions of NBS radio station WWV/WWVH are received, detected, and finally decoded in microcomputer software to generate a highly accurate time base for the platform; with the assistance of external hardware, the microcomputer also directs the recalibration of all DCP oscillators to achieve very high frequency accuracies and low drift rates versus temperature, supply voltage, and time. The final programmable DCP design also employs direct microcomputer control of data reduction, formatting, transmitter switching, and system power management.

NASA Pioneer: Venus reverse playback telemetry program TR 78-2

During the entry of the Pioneer Venus Atmospheric Probes into the Venus atmosphere, there were several events (RF blackout and data rate changes) which caused the ground receiving equipment to lose lock on the signal. This caused periods of data loss immediately following each one of these disturbing events which lasted until all the ground receiving units (receiver, subcarrier demodulator, symbol synchronizer, and sequential decoder) acquired lock once more. A scheme to recover these data by off-line data processing was implemented. This scheme consisted of receiving the S band signals from the probes with an open loop reciever (requiring no lock up on the signal) in parallel with the closed loop receivers of the real time receiving equipment, down converting the signals to baseband, and recording them on an analog recorder. The off-line processing consisted of playing the analog recording in the reverse direction (starting with the end of the tape) up, converting the signal to S-band, feeding the signal into the "real time" receiving system and recording on digital tape, the soft decisions from the symbol synchronizer.

Capacity, cutoff rate, and coding for a direct-detection optical channel

It is shown that when Pierce's pulse-position modulation scheme with 2 to the L power positions (where L is some positive integer) is used on a self-noise-limited direct-detection optical communication channel, there results a (2 to the L power)-ary erasure channel that is equivalent to the parallel combination of L completely correlated binary erasure channels. The capacity of the full channel is the sum of the capacities of the component channels, but the cutoff rate of the full channel is shown to be much smaller than the sum of the cutoff rates. An interpretation of the cutoff rate is given that suggests a complexity advantage in coding separately on the component channels. It is shown that if short-constraint length convolutional codes with Viterbi decoders are used on the component channels, then the performance and complexity compare favorably with the Reed-Solomon coding system proposed by McEliece (1979) for the full channel. The reasons for this unexpectedly fine performance by the convolutional code system are explored in detail, as are various facets of the channel structure.

Remote sensing of benthic microalgal biomass with a tower-mounted multispectral scanner

A remote sensing instrument was mounted on a 50-ft tower overlooking North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina in order to conduct a remote sensing study of benthic microalgae. The instrument was programmed to take multispectral imagery data along a 90 deg horizontal frame in six spectral bands ranging from 400-1050 nm and had a ground resolution of about 3 cm. Imagery measurements were encoded in digital form on magnetic tape and were stored, decoded, and manipulated by computer. Correlation coefficients were calculated on imagery data and chlorophyll a concentrations derived from ground truth data. The most significant correlation occurred in the blue spectral band with numerical values ranging from -0.81 to -0.88 for three separate sampling periods. Mean values of chlorophyll a for a larger section of mudflat were estimated using regression equations. The scanner has provided encouraging results and promises to be a useful tool in sampling the biomass of intertidal benthic microalgae.

High density bit transition requirements versus the effects on BCH error correcting code

The design to achieve the required bit transition density for the Space Shuttle high rate multiplexes (HRM) data stream of the Space Laboratory Vehicle is reviewed. It contained a recommended circuit approach, specified the pseudo random (PN) sequence to be used and detailed the properties of the sequence. Calculations showing the probability of failing to meet the required transition density were included. A computer simulation of the data stream and PN cover sequence was provided. All worst case situations were simulated and the bit transition density exceeded that required. The Preliminary Design Review and the critical Design Review are documented. The Cover Sequence Generator (CSG) Encoder/Decoder design was constructed and demonstrated. The demonstrations were successful. All HRM and HRDM units incorporate the CSG encoder or CSG decoder as appropriate.
