Rechargeable Battery Auto-Cycler Requiring Lower Power and Dissipating Reduced Waste Heat

A battery charger system includes a power supply and a switch connected to the power supply wherein the switch has a first switch half and a second switch half. First and second batteries are selectively connected to the power supply via the switch. The first and second switch halves are moved between a plurality of operational positions to fully charge the first battery, discharge the first battery into the second battery, discharge the second battery into the first battery, and fully charge the second battery.

Turbomachinery Simulation Impact on Design, Understanding, and Optimization

This presentation shows the impact of Turbomachinery Simulation from simple analytical simulation to high fidelity CFD and Finite Element Analysis on the design of turbomachinery and the understanding of flow physics that is then used to improve design approaches. The impact of Optimization is also presented. The best approach for the tool development is to work with a compressor, fan, or turbine designer or to work on the design process directly. The presentation represents the work and impact of the author over his 45-year career and provides insight for both new and experienced engineers. The presentation explores applications of distortion from a downstream fan frame, the first uses of 3D CFD for fan, compressor and turbine design, and approaches to optimization for performance and structures.

Biobased Polybenzoxazine Derived from Furfurylamine and Piceol with Low Cure Temperature and Advanced Properties for Composite Matrices

A novel benzoxazine made from furfurylamine, paraformaldehyde, and piceol, Bz-FA-HA, is assessed for applications in fiber reinforced (FR) composites. Piceol is a biobased phenolic compound derived from the roots of Norwegian spruce trees and contains a methyl ketone group at the para position. Bz-FA-HA is a liquid at room temperature, has a viscosity of < 1 Pa.s at temperatures above 90 °C, and a Tonset of cure at 132 °C. The carbonyl is found to react with the furan ring, yielding a crosslinking reaction, when cured above 180 °C as indicated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Poly(Bz-FA-HA) has a Tg > 350 °C, attributed to the crosslinking reaction. Furthermore, the storage modulus is > 3 GPa, regardless of cure temperature. Poly(Bz-FA-HA) has a char yield at 800 °C of 65.0 % (62.3 % at 1000 °C), and a Tonset of decomposition of 357 °C in nitrogen. The resulting carbon formed during pyrolysis shrinks during the carbonization reaction and scanning electron microscopy imaging shows a cross-section with micro cracks. The high processability, advanced mechanical properties, and exceptional char yield make it a promising candidate as the matrix for FR composites.

Solar Absorptance and Thermal Emittance of Some Common Spacecraft Thermal-Control Coatings

Solar absorptance and thermal emittance of spacecraft materials are critical parameters in determining spacecraft temperature control. Because thickness, surface preparation, coatings formulation, manufacturing techniques, etc. affect these parameters, it is usually necessary to measure the absorptance and emittance of materials before they are used. Absorptance and emittance data for many common types of thermal control coatings, are together with some sample spectral data curves of absorptance. In some cases for which ultraviolet and particle radiation data are available, the degraded absorptance and emittance values are also listed.

Processing and Manufacture of Composite Propellants

This paper is a chemical engineering unit processing treatment of the steps involved in the manufacture of solid propellant motors. The author treats the major processes of raw material preparation, mixing, casting and curing by describing equipment, the processing, steps and some engineering considerations associated therewith. The three simultaneous processes occurring within the solid propellant nixing, namely, homogenization, wetting and curing, are discussed in more detail, briefly touching on control of these reactions and the engineering trade-offs among them.

Integrated Inverter And Battery Charger

Circuit combines functions of dc-to-ac inversion (for driving ac motor in battery-powered vehicle) and ac-to-dc conversion (for charging battery from ac line when vehicle not in use). Automatically adapts to either mode. Design of integrated inverter/charger eliminates need for duplicate components, saves space, reduces weight and cost of vehicle. Advantages in other applications : load-leveling systems, standby ac power systems, and uninterruptible power supplies.

Up-and-Coming IMCs

While the good oxidation and environmental resistance, high melting points, and comparatively low densities of such ordered intermetallics as Ti 3 Al, NiAl, FeAl, and NbAl 3 render them good candidates for advanced aerospace structures, their poor toughness at low temperatures and low strength at elevated temperatures have prompted the development of fiber-reinforced intermetallic-matrix composites (IMCs) with more balanced characteristics. Fabrication methods for continuous-fiber IMCs under development include the P/M 'powder cloth' method, the foil/fiber method, and thermal spraying. The ultimate success of IMCs depends on fibers truly compatible with the matrix materials.

New Trends in Coatings Developments for Turbine Blades: Materials Processing and Repair

Turbine engines for aeronautic applications now have to face strenuous requirements concerning not only operating performances but also reliability and repairability. This evolution of the specifications induces important consequences regarding the choice and the design of turbine blade protective coatings. This paper presents several key features concerning the deposition techniques and the real-life behavior of such coatings: (1) complex aluminides well suited to the protection against high temperature oxidation and hot corrosion of directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy turbine blades; (2) ceramic coatings used as thermal barriers - they have to exhibit both high resistance to thermomechanical fatigue and adequate smoothness; (3) processing techniques for thermal barriers, including plasma spraying, electron beam physical vapor deposition and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition; and (4) blades and coatings repair techniques.

The OSO-1 represents a recent vintage satellite, or more recent design satellite. A summary of the battery design used on OSO-1 is presented. The temperature effects on voltage and charging-discharging of the battery system are discussed.

Extensional Flow Convecting a Reactant Undergoing a First Order Homogeneous Reaction and Diffusional Mass Transfer From a Sphere at Low to Intermediate Peclet and Damkohler Numbers

Forced convective diffusion-reaction is considered for viscous axisymmetric extensional convecting velocity in the neighborhood of a sphere. For Peclet numbers in the range 0.1 ≤ Pe ≤ 500 and for Damkohler numbers increasing with increasing Pe but in the overall range 0.02 ≤ Da ≤ 10, average and local Sherwood numbers have been computed. By introducing the eigenfunction expansion c(r,Θ) = Σ c n (r)P n (cosΘ) into the forced convective diffusion equation for the concentration of a chemical species undergoing a first order homogeneous reaction and by using properties of the Legendre functions P n (cosΘ), the variable coefficient PDE can be reduced to a system of N+1 second order ODEs for the radial functions C n (r), n=0,1,2, ... ,N. The adaptive grid algorithm of Pereyra and Lentini can be used to solve the corresponding 2(N+ 1) first order differential equations as a two-point boundary value problem on 1 ≤ r ≤ r •• . Convergence of the expansion for a specific value of N can thus be established and provides "spectral" behavior as well as the full concentration field c(r,Θ).
