Helium Balloon Valve Improvement

The NASA Balloon Program Office (BPO), located at Wallops Flight Facility asked the Mechanical Systems Branch (Code 548) to improve the design of their balloon valve. BPO uses two main types of balloons, Zero Pressure Balloon (ZPB) and Super Pressure Balloon (SPB), which both use the valve. It is used for termination of the ZPB, and inflation and termination of the SPB. During launch campaigns the valve showed signs of helium leakage which lead the BPO to ask for an improvement. As part of a Professional Readiness Engineering Program (PREP), research and review of the current valve was conducted and a new design was prepared. The current custom designed valve consists of a "pie" plate that is actuated up and down via a gear rack that is driven by a globe motor. When closed the knife edge of the pie plate bites into a silicone gasket to seal the structure. Unfortunately, the gasket material permanently deforms after being compressed and the plate itself bends under the force induced by the motor, introducing two possible helium leak paths. The new custom designed valve utilizes o-rings instead of one gasket to reduce the possibility of leakage from permanent deformation. One o-ring seals the valve structure to its mating surface and a spring energized o-ring is used in a piston design to seal the valve once it's closed. The design also utilizes different materials to increase stiffness and strength so that it is less likely to bend under the force from the motor. Currently the new valve has finished the design and analysis phases and is proceeding towards manufacturing and testing.

Simons Observatory HoloSim-ML: Machine Learning Applied to the Efficient Analysis of Radio Holography Measurements of Complex Optical Systems

Near-field radio holography is a common method for measuring and aligning mirror surfaces for millimeter andsub-millimeter telescopes. In instruments with more than a single mirror, degeneracies arise in the holographymeasurement, requiring multiple measurements and new fitting methods. We present HoloSim-ML, a Pythoncode for beam simulation and analysis of radio holography data from complex optical systems. This code usesmachine learning to efficiently determine the position of hundreds of mirror adjusters on multiple mirrors with fewmicrometer accuracy. We apply this approach to the example of the Simons Observatory 6 m telescope.

A Visual Atlas on Strategic Trade

Strategic trade concerns global trade flows of items with strategic military value. Items include goods with exclusive military use, but also dual-use items that can have both military and civil uses. Many countries require licenses for trade in strategic items as a measure of non-proliferation. For example, items listed for trade control by multilateral export control arrangements, such as the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), typically are considered strategic goods. Analysts and officials involved in strategic trade control often lack quantitative global understanding of relevant trade patterns that would help them focus control and enforcement efforts, select companies for outreach and audit, target transactions for verification and inspection, and assess the potential economic impact of trade control policies. Many are unaware of available open source data on international trade that can inform these issues. Many do not know how to make use of such data or lack the tools necessary to do so. A book of charts dubbed a ‘Strategic Trade Atlas’ was developed to illustrate global trade flows of strategic goods and raise awareness of the availability and utility of open source trade data. The Atlas was prepared for the World Customs Organization (WCO) and its Member States to support their planning and execution of Strategic Trade Control Enforcement (STCE) operations. It offers macroscopic graphical representations of global trade flows classified under Harmonized System (HS) codes associated by the WCO with commodities described in its STCE Implementation Guide. While these HS codes are understood to also encompass many non-strategic items, they nevertheless provide a good overview of potentially strategic trade flows. These include HS codes covering nuclear and nuclear-related commodities listed by the NSG, such as uranium, heavy water, graphite, carbon fiber, nickel powder, beryllium, aluminum tubes, vacuum pumps, valves, machine tools, cameras, and many others. The Atlas uses trade data from the Base pour l’Analyse du Commerce International (BACI), a statistical elaboration of public UN Comtrade data. BACI data reconciles trade flows, taking into account asymmetries in import and export trade valuation. The data visualization approach facilitates rapid sense making, pattern recognition, and anomaly detection. Country-based profiles summarize vast amounts of data into readily understandable graphical representations of each country’s primary strategic imports and exports and their main trading partners. Commodity-based profiles provide a global view of major exporters, importers, and trade patterns for each commodity. These insights can inform the risk management approach employed by customs to allocate enforcement and compliance efforts.

Core and Fuel Cycle Performance of a Molten Salt Fast Reactor

This paper discusses the reactor core design and modeling approaches for a specific molten salt fast reactor (MSFR) design that is started up with high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) within a chloride fuel salt and focuses on the technical assumptions and design choices. These include the fuel salt properties, first core and make-up heavy metal requirements, fuel composition evolution, equilibrium fission product concentration, etc. This MSFR concept was developed as part of a wider study that sought to compare the fuel cycle performance tradeoffs between deploying a fleet of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) and deploying a fleet of MSFRs. MSFRs that use flowing liquid fuel salt and on-line salt processing are of particular interest because these technology characteristics are significantly different from those of SFRs and can lead to major differences in fuel cycle impacts. The goal of this study was not to draw general conclusions based on a direct comparison of two very specific point designs for an SFR and MSFR, but rather to use this example MSFR design and associated parametric studies to gain insight into the key technology characteristics that impact fuel cycle performance as it relates to resource utilization (i.e., uranium consumption). The MSFR reactor physics, fission product removal, and fuel salt mass flows were modeled using Argonne’s recently-developed molten salt reactor (MSR) analysis tools while the time-dependent fuel cycle performance of this specific reactor was compared to that of a representative SFR design using the fuel cycle system dynamics code DYMOND.

Strategic Trade Atlas 2014-2018. Country- and Commodity-Based Views

A Strategic Trade Atlas was developed to promote understanding of global trade flows of strategic goods, i.e., goods of militarily strategic value, including dual-use goods. This Atlas provides macroscopic graphical representations of global trade flows classified under Harmonized System (HS) codes associated by the World Customs Organization with strategic commodities. The profiles provide information rich representations of strategic commodity-related imports and exports classified under these HS codes, based on data originally reported to and made publicly available by the United Nations Statistical Division, then processed to reconcile trade asymmetries by the Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales. This and other high quality, statistically relevant data sources exist, but are largely untapped resources for strategic trade control purposes. Efforts to promote and facilitate use of trade data should enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of strategic trade control efforts.

Nuclear Trade Atlas 2016-2020

Building on prior work developing a Strategic Trade Atlas promoting understanding of global trade flows of strategic goods, a Nuclear Trade Atlas was developed based on publicly available trade data. The Nuclear Trade Atlas examines trade patterns and trends for seventeen commodities based on a two-step assessment of the trade’s nuclear relevance: first estimating the probability that trade classified under a given Harmonized System (HS) code represents a specific commodity included in the export control lists of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, and second estimating the probability that the listed, often dual-use, commodity would be indicative of nuclear use. These estimates combine to provide a measure of the likelihood trade classified under a given HS code may be nuclear relevant. By exclusively focusing on the HS codes most highly ranked by this measure, the resulting data visualizations comprising the Nuclear Trade Atlas provide those responsible for regulating or monitoring nuclear trade greater understanding of relevant global trading patterns and trends. The Atlas includes both commodity- and country-based views of nuclear trade. It is published as a book and as an interactive tool. Besides trade data, the interactive Atlas also includes data about countries’ non-proliferation commitments, allowing users to take this information into consideration while analyzing specific trade flows.

Systems and methods for binary code analysis

Human-readable (HR) code may be derived from a binary. The HR code may be configured to have statistical properties suitable for machine-learned (ML) translation. The HR code may comprise source code, intermediate code, assembly code, or the like. A machine-learned translator may be configured to translate the HR code into labels comprising semantic information pertaining to respective functions of the binary, such as a function name, role, or the like. Execution of the binary may be blocked in response to translating the HR code to a label associated with malware, such as cryptocurrency mining malware or the like. Conversely, the binary may be permitted to proceed to execution in response to determining that the translation is free from labels indicative of malware.

A Performance Study of Quantum ESPRESSO’s PWscf Code on Multi-core and GPU Systems

We describe the porting of PWscf (Plane-Wave Self Consistent Field), a key component of the Quantum ESPRESSO open-source suite of codes for materials modeling, to GPU systems using CUDA Fortran. Kernel loop directives (CUF kernels) have been extensively used in order to have a single source code for both CPU and GPU implementations. The results of the GPU version have been carefully validated and the performance of the code on several GPU systems (both x86 and POWER8 based) has been compared with traditional Intel multi-core (CPU only) systems. This current GPU version can reduce the time-to-solution by an average factor of 2–3 running two different input cases widely used as benchmarks on small and large high performance computing systems.

Computer program for prediction of fuel consumption statistical data for an upper stage three-axes stabilized on-off control system

A FORTRAN coded computer program and method to predict the reaction control fuel consumption statistics for a three axis stabilized rocket vehicle upper stage is described. A Monte Carlo approach is used which is more efficient by using closed form estimates of impulses. The effects of rocket motor thrust misalignment, static unbalance, aerodynamic disturbances, and deviations in trajectory, mass properties and control system characteristics are included. This routine can be applied to many types of on-off reaction controlled vehicles. The pseudorandom number generation and statistical analyses subroutines including the output histograms can be used for other Monte Carlo analyses problems.

The solution of linear systems of equations with a structural analysis code on the NAS CRAY-2

Two methods for solving linear systems of equations on the NAS Cray-2 are described. One is a direct method; the other is an iterative method. Both methods exploit the architecture of the Cray-2, particularly the vectorization, and are aimed at structural analysis applications. To demonstrate and evaluate the methods, they were installed in a finite element structural analysis code denoted the Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) Testbed. A description of the techniques used to integrate the two solvers into the Testbed is given. Storage schemes, memory requirements, operation counts, and reformatting procedures are discussed. Finally, results from the new methods are compared with results from the initial Testbed sparse Choleski equation solver for three structural analysis problems. The new direct solvers described achieve the highest computational rates of the methods compared. The new iterative methods are not able to achieve as high computation rates as the vectorized direct solvers but are best for well conditioned problems which require fewer iterations to converge to the solution.

Multidisciplinary High-Fidelity Analysis and Optimization of Aerospace Vehicles: Formulation - Part 1

An objective of the High Performance Computing and Communication Program at the NASA Langley Research Center is to demonstrate multidisciplinary shape and sizing optimization of a complete aerospace vehicle configuration by using high-fidelity, finite element structural analysis and computational fluid dynamics aerodynamic analysis in a distributed, heterogeneous computing environment that includes high performance parallel computing. A software system has been designed and implemented to integrate a set of existing discipline analysis codes, some of them computationally intensive, into a distributed computational environment for the design of a highspeed civil transport configuration. The paper describes the engineering aspects of formulating the optimization by integrating these analysis codes and associated interface codes into the system. The discipline codes are integrated by using the Java programming language and a Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) compliant software product. A companion paper presents currently available results.
