Coordinated ionospheric and magnetospheric observations from the ISIS 2 satellite by the ISIS 2 experimenters. Volume 2: Auroral optical emissions magnetic field perturbations, and plasma characteristics, measured simultaneously on the same magnetic field line

The data set consists of a selected number of passes, each comprising a format combination that is most appropriate for the particular data set. A list of ISIS 2 experimenters, with addresses and telephone numbers is included. A brief description of the ISIS 2 satellite is given, followed by more detailed instrument descriptions, format descriptions, data set descriptions, and the data themselves.

Accretion by magnetic neutron stars. II - Plasma entry into the magnetosphere via diffusion, polar cusps, and magnetic field reconnection

A variety of entry modes were investigated to determine whether most of the accreting plasma enters the magnetosphere as a result of hydromagnetic instability or via other means. It is shown that diffusion is never important under the conditions of interest, nor is the loss-cone entry through the polar cusps when the plasma is collisionless. Although the loss-cone entry rate can be significantly increased if the plasma in the cusps cools and becomes collisional, this cannot stabilize the magnetosphere. The descent of the cusps cannot be the dominant entry process if the star has a persistent luminosity greater than about 10 to the 36th erg/s and a substantial fraction of the magnetosphere is illuminated. This, however, can be a significant entry process for much lower luminosities or strongly anisotropic illumination. The possibility that plasma entry via reconnection can stabilize the magnetosphere is also unlikely.

Three-dimensional magnetic reconnection and the magnetic topology of coronal mass ejection events

Measurements of superthermal electron fluxes in the solar wind indicate that field lines within coronal mass ejections, CMEs, near and beyond 1 AU are normally connected to the Sun at both ends. However, on occasion some field lines embedded deep within CMEs appear to be connected to the Sun at only one end. Here we propose an explanation for how such field lines arise in terms of 3-dimensional reconnection close to the Sun. Such reconnection also provides a natural explanation for the flux rope topology characteristic of many CMEs as well as the coronal loops formed during long-duration, solar X-ray events. Our consideration of the field topologies resulting from 3-dimensional reconnection indicates that field lines within and near CMEs may on occasion be connected to the outer heliosphere at both ends.
