Chemical components of the Apollo 15 regolith

The lunar regolith is a complex mixture of many components. Compositional data is used to identify and estimate the relative importance of the various chemical components of the regolith. The results and conclusions of four methods that were applied to Apollo 15 regolith data were reviewed to determine the important chemical components: graphical techniques, analysis of individual soil particles, factor analysis, and multicomponent mixing models. This synthesis relies heavily on data and conclusions from the literature as well as new analyses on 28 regolith breccia samples, 28 soil samples, and 50 individual 1 to 2 mm particles from soil 15272.

Experimental verification of corrosive vapor deposition rate theory in high velocity burner rigs

The ability to predict deposition rates is required to facilitate modelling of high temperature corrosion by fused salt condensates in turbine engines. A corrosive salt vapor deposition theory based on multicomponent chemically frozen boundary layers (CFBL) has been successfully verified by high velocity burner rig experiments. The experiments involved internally air-impingement cooled, both rotating full and stationary segmented cylindrical collectors located in the crossflow of sodium-seeded combustion gases. Excellent agreement is found between the CFBL theory an the experimental measurements for both the absolute amounts of Na2SO4 deposition rates and the behavior of deposition rate with respect to collector temperature, mass flowrate (velocity) and Na concentration.

Measurement of viscosity of gaseous mixtures at atmospheric pressure

Coefficients of viscosity of various types of gas mixtures, including simulated natural-gas samples, have been measured at atmospheric pressure and room temperature using a modified capillary tube method. Pressure drops across the straight capillary tube section of a thermal mass flowmeter were measured for small, well-defined, volume flow rates for the test gases and for standard air. In this configuration, the flowmeter provides the volumetric flow rates as well as a well-characterized capillary section for differential pressure measurements across it. The coefficients of viscosity of the test gases were calculated using the reported value of 185.6 micro P for the viscosity of air. The coefficients of viscosity for the test mixtures were also calculated using Wilke's approximation of the Chapman-Enskog (C-E) theory. The experimental and calculated values for binary mixtures are in agreement within the reported accuracy of Wilke's approximation of the C-E theory. However, the agreement for multicomponent mixtures is less satisfactory, possible because of the limitations of Wilkes's approximation of the classical dilute-gas state model.

Fugacity and concentration gradients in a gravity field

Equations are reviewed which show that at equilibrium fugacity and concentration gradients can exist in gravitational fields. At equilibrium, the logarithm of the ratio of the fugacities of a species at two different locations in a gravitational field is proportional to the difference in the heights of the two locations and the molecular weight of the species. An analogous relation holds for the concentration ratios in a multicomponent system. The ratio is calculated for a variety of examples. The kinetics for the general process are derived, and the time required to approach equilibrium is calculated for several systems. The following special topics are discussed: ionic solutions, polymers, multiphase systems, hydrostatic pressure, osmotic pressure, and solubility gradients in a gravity field.

A detailed numerical model of a supersonic reacting mixing layer

A current research effort is underway at the NASA Langley Research Center to achieve a detailed understanding of important phenomena present when a supersonic flow undergoes chemical reaction. A computer program has been developed to study the details of such flows. The program has been constructed to consider the multicomponent diffusion and convection of important species, the finite-rate reaction of these species, and the resulting interaction between the fluid mechanics and chemistry. Code results from the analysis of a spatially developing and reacting mixing layer are presented, and conclusions are drawn regarding the structure of the evolving layer and its associated flame.

Spectroscopic aspects of differential method for sounding gas composition of the atmosphere

The problems concerning the dynamics of populations of the sounded atmospheric gas molecule levels taking into account the nonmonochromatic character of radiation, durations of exciting and sounding pulses, rates of relaxation of excited vibration-rotation states population along different channels in a natural multicomponent mixture of gases and air were investigated. The problems of spectroscopic software, completeness and accuracy of the initial spectroscopic information, information on channels and rates of relaxation from the viewpoint of developing specific schemes of sounding are discussed. The values of deviations of vibration-rotation level populations of some atmospheric molecules from their equilibrium value at simultaneous action of double frequency radiation on the sounding path and the corresponding dynamic variation of lidar return amplitude were estimated. The importance of nonlinear spectrosopic effects in the lidar return value variation at sounding radiation frequency equaling the resonance frequency of vibration-rotation transition in the problem on sounding the humidity profiles and concentrations of gaseous pollutants was also estimated.

IUE study of the very local interstellar medium

The IUE and Copernicus results for the very local interstellar medium are compared. Despite its lower resolution, IUE produces results of comparable quality, giving important confirmation of Copernicus results on the density, temperature, turbulence, and deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio in the region within 10 pc of the Sun. The stars observed are in a very low-density quarter of the galaxy: multicomponent structure seen in other directions may not be present in the direction of most of the observed stars. The exceedingly low densities observed in certain directions encourages the idea that EUV studies of certain normal stars may be possible.

Fluoride salts and container materials for thermal energy storage applications in the temperature range 973 to 1400 K

Multicomponent fluoride salt mixtures were characterized for use as latent heat of fusion heat storage materials in advanced solar dynamic space power systems with operating temperatures in the range of 973 to 1400 K. The melting points and eutectic composition for many systems with published phase diagrams were verified, and several new eutectic compositions were identified. Additionally, the heats of fusion of several binary and ternary eutectics and congruently melting intermediate compounds were measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The extent of corrosion of various metals by fluoride melts was estimated from thermodynamic considerations, and equilibrium conditions inside a containment vessel were calculated as functions of the initial moisture content of the salt and free volume above the molten salt. Preliminary experimental data on the corrosion of commercial, high-temperature alloys in LiF-19.5CaF2 and NaF-27CaF2-36MgF2 melts are presented and compared to the thermodynamic predictions.

A new PNS code for chemical nonequilibrium flows

A new parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) code has been developed to compute the hypersonic laminar flow of a multicomponent, chemically reacting mixture of thermally perfect gases over two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies. The new PNS code solves the gas dynamic and species conservation equations in a coupled manner using a noniterative, implicit, space-marching finite-difference method. The conditions for well-posedness of the space-marching method have been derived from an eigenvalue analysis of the governing equations. The code has been used to compute hypersonic laminar flow of chemically reacting air over wedges and cones. The results of these computations are in good agreement with the results of reacting boundary-layer calculations.

Nonradiative relaxation in tunable solid state laser crystals

The characteristics of nonradiative transitions between the 4T2 and 2E excited states of trivalent-chromium-ion-activated ruby (containing 0.04 percent Cr2O3 by weight) and alexandrite (containing 0.4 at. percent chromium ion) laser crystals were studied using the technique described by Gayen et al. (1985). In this technique, a 527-nm pulse excites the 4T2 band of the Cr(3+), and the subsequent population kinetics among excited states is monitored by an IR picosecond probe pulse as a function of pump-probe delay. In ruby, a resolution-limited sharp rise in the excited state population was followed by a long-lifetime decay, leading to an upper limit of 7 ps for the 4T2-state nonradiative lifetime. In alexandrite, a longer rise time was followed by a multicomponent decay. A theoretical model is proposed for explaining the induced absorption and the transition dynamics observed in these crystals.

Ion cyclotron waves observed near the plasmapause

Pc2 electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves at 0.1 Hz, near the oxygen cyclotron frequency, have been observed by ISEE-1 and -2 between L = 7.6 - 5.8 on an inbound near equatorial pass in the dusk sector. The waves occurred in a thick plasmapause of width about 1 earth radius and penetrated about 1 earth radius into the plasmasphere. Wave onset was accompanied by significant increases in the thermal (0-100 eV) He(+) and the warm (0.1-16 keV/e) O(+) and He(+) heavy ion populations. Wave polarization is predominantly left-handed with propagation almost parallel to the ambient magnetic field, and the spectral slot and polarization reversal predicted by multicomponent cold plasma propagation theory are identified in the wave data. The results are considered as an example of wave-particle interactions occurring during the outer plasmasphere refilling process at the time of the substorm recovery phase.

Vapor transport processes of Ge-chalcogenides under normal and reduced gravity conditions

Experimental and theoretical studies of the GeSe-GeI4 system revealed the multicomponent, multireaction nature of this system and the existence of a diffusion boundary layer; they also yielded equations for the prediction of diffusion limited mass transport rates. Vapor transport and crystal growth experiments of the GeSe-GeI4 and GeSe-Xe systems on earth and in a microgravity environment demonstrated the effects of convection and of microgravity on mass flux and crystal morphology. The surface and bulk morphology of GeSe crystals obtained for both systems in microgravity is considerably improved relative to ground-based specimens. Unexpected crystal growth phenomena were observed for the GeSe-Xenon system on recent Shuttle flights.

The IR emission features - Emission from PAH molecules and amorphous carbon particles

Techniques for the assessment of the importance of the various forms of PAHs, and recent infrared observations concerning the PAH problem, are considered. Spectroscopic data suggest that the observed interstellar spectrum is due to both free molecule-sized PAHs producing the narrow features, and amorphous carbon particles contributing to the broad underlying components. Explanations for the multicomponent emission spectrum are discussed. A model of the emission mechanism for the example of chrysene is presented, and an exact treatment of the IR fluorescence from highly vibrationally excited large molecules shows that species containing 20-30 carbon atoms are responsible for the narrow features, although the spectra more closely resemble those of amorphous carbon particles. It is suggested that future emphasis should be placed on the spatial characteristics of the component spectra.

Numerical simulation of a supersonic reacting mixing layer

In order to arrive at physical models that can adequately describe supersonic combustion, and develop accurate and efficient numerical techniques for the solution of such models' governing equations, a computer program has been developed for the study of reacting flows which considers the multicomponent diffusion and convection of important chemical species, as well as their finite state reaction and the interaction of the fluid mechanics and the chemistry that occurred. The code employs a hybrid Chebyshev pseudospectral technique for integration of the models' resulting governing equations; the program is here used to study a spatially developing and reacting mixing layer.

A new parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) code has been developed to compute the hypersonic, viscous, chemically reacting flow fields around three-dimensional bodies. The flow medium is assumed to be a multicomponent mixture of thermally perfect but calorically imperfect gases. The new PNS code solves the gasdynamic and species conservation equations in a coupled manner using a noniterative, implicit, approximately-factored, finite-difference algorithm. The space-marching method is made well-posed by special treatment of the streamwise pressure gradient term. The code has been used to compute hypersonic laminar flow of chemically reacting air over cones at angles of attack. The results of the computations are compared with the results of reacting boundary-layer computations and show excellent agreement.

The ultraviolet and optical emission-line spectrum of III Zw 77

The high-ionization Seyfert I galaxy III Zw 77 has been simultaneously observed over the satellite ultraviolet to near-IR spectral regions. As in other AGN, the continuous energy distribution shows a roughly power-law decline across much of the optical region and a flatter-than-unity spectral index in the near-UV. The equivalent widths of the Balmer lines and Ly-alpha are very similar to those found in other AGN. The UV-to-optical emission-line spectrum for narrow lines is fairly similar to those deduced for Seyfert 2 galaxies. A surprising result is the detection of the semiforbidden O III 1661, 1666 A doublet with an intensity indicating high temperatures more suggestive of shock heating than photoionization equilibrium. An interpretation in terms of a multicomponent photoionized structure is proposed in which dense regions produce the UV lines and the lower density regions produce the optical lines.

Analysis of Martian ionosphere and solar wind electron gas data from the planar retarding potential analyzer on the Viking spacecraft

Approximate expressions for the electron current collected by a planar retarding potential analyzer (RPA) mounted on a moving, conducting, charged spacecraft are derived. They are utilized for the analysis of electron current data obtained by the RPAs on the Viking spacecraft in the ionosphere of Mars and in the disturbed and undisturbed solar wind near this planet. It is shown that contamination currents by photoelectrons emitted from the spacecraft can be distinguished and removed from the signal. Parameters deduced from the analysis of RPA electron sampling data are the multicomponent electron temperatures, the number densities, and the spacecraft potential.
