Linking consistency with object/thread semantics - An approach to robust computation

This paper presents an object/thread based paradigm that links data consistency with object/thread semantics. The paradigm can be used to achieve a wide range of consistency semantics from strict atomic transactions to standard process semantics. The paradigm supports three types of data consistency. Object programmers indicate the type of consistency desired on a per-operation basis and the system performs automatic concurrency control and recovery management to ensure that those consistency requirements are met. This allows programmers to customize consistency and recovery on a per-application basis without having to supply complicated, custom recovery management schemes. The paradigm allows robust and nonrobust computation to operate concurrently on the same data in a well defined manner. The operating system needs to support only one vehicle of computation - the thread.

Ada software productivity prototypes: A case study

A case study of the impact of Ada on a Command and Control project completed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is given. The data for this study was collected as part of a general survey of software costs and productivity at JPL and other NASA sites. The task analyzed is a successful example of the use of rapid prototyping as applied to command and control for the U.S. Air Force and provides the U.S. Air Force Military Airlift Command with the ability to track aircraft, air crews and payloads worldwide. The task consists of a replicated database at several globally distributed sites. The local databases at each site can be updated within seconds after changes are entered at any one site. The system must be able to handle up to 400,000 activities per day. There are currently seven sites, each with a local area network of computers and a variety of user displays; the local area networks are tied together into a single wide area network. Using data obtained for eight modules, totaling approximately 500,000 source lines of code, researchers analyze the differences in productivities between subtasks. Factors considered are percentage of Ada used in coding, years of programmer experience, and the use of Ada tools and modern programming practices. The principle findings are the following. Productivity is very sensitive to programmer experience. The use of Ada software tools and the use of modern programming practices are important; without such use Ada is just a large complex language which can cause productivity to decrease. The impact of Ada on development effort phases is consistent with earlier reports at the project level but not at the module level.

Compiling global name-space programs for distributed execution

Distributed memory machines do not provide hardware support for a global address space. Thus programmers are forced to partition the data across the memories of the architecture and use explicit message passing to communicate data between processors. The compiler support required to allow programmers to express their algorithms using a global name-space is examined. A general method is presented for analysis of a high level source program and along with its translation to a set of independently executing tasks communicating via messages. If the compiler has enough information, this translation can be carried out at compile-time. Otherwise run-time code is generated to implement the required data movement. The analysis required in both situations is described and the performance of the generated code on the Intel iPSC/2 is presented.

Isothermal thermogravimetric data acquisition analysis system

The description of an Isothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) Data Acquisition System is presented. The system consists of software and hardware to perform a wide variety of TGA experiments. The software is written in ANSI C using Borland's Turbo C++. The hardware consists of a 486/25 MHz machine with a Capital Equipment Corp. IEEE488 interface card. The interface is to a Hewlett Packard 3497A data acquisition system using two analog input cards and a digital actuator card. The system provides for 16 TGA rigs with weight and temperature measurements from each rig. Data collection is conducted in three phases. Acquisition is done at a rapid rate during initial startup, at a slower rate during extended data collection periods, and finally at a fast rate during shutdown. Parameters controlling the rate and duration of each phase are user programmable. Furnace control (raising and lowering) is also programmable. Provision is made for automatic restart in the event of power failure or other abnormal terminations. Initial trial runs were conducted to show system stability.

Analysis of faults detected in a large-scale multi-version software development experiment

In a multiversion software experiment, twenty programs were built to the same specification of an inertial navigation problem. The programs were then subjected to a three-phase testing and debugging process: an acceptance test, a certification test, and an operational test. Less than 20 percent of the faults discovered during the certification and operational testing were nonunique, i.e., the same or very similar faults would be found in more than one program. However, some of these common faults spanned as many as half of the versions. Faults discovered during the certification testing were due to specification errors and ambiguities, inadequate programmer background knowledge, insufficient programming experience, incomplete analysis, and insufficient acceptance testing. Faults discovered during the operational testing were of a more subtle nature, and were mostly due to various programmer knowledge defects and incomplete analysis errors. Techniques that might have prevented the observed faults are discussed.

Flexible digital modulation and coding synthesis for satellite communications

An architecture and a hardware prototype of a flexible trellis modem/codec (FTMC) transmitter are presented. The theory of operation is built upon a pragmatic approach to trellis-coded modulation that emphasizes power and spectral efficiency. The system incorporates programmable modulation formats, variations of trellis-coding, digital baseband pulse-shaping, and digital channel precompensation. The modulation formats examined include (uncoded and coded) binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quatenary phase shift keying (QPSK), octal phase shift keying (8PSK), 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), and quadrature quadrature phase shift keying (Q squared PSK) at programmable rates up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps). The FTMC is part of the developing test bed to quantify modulation and coding concepts.

Nickel-hydrogen LEO cycling at 20 percent - 50 percent DOD

The test setup consists of four major elements: the programmable power supplies and load banks, the data acquisition and control system control computer, and the NiH2 specimen test cells. A simplified block diagram of the test setup is shown. The test setup provides complete battery isolation should a fault occur, and fusing as necessary to protect the battery cells and other equipment. Front panel switches provide for power supply configuration and battery isolation. Front panel meters provide continuous real-time visual monitoring of the voltage and current for each pack of cells. A strip chart recorder provides a hard copy of the voltage and current profiles for each of the packs. The test operates continuously with minimal human interface, except during special tests. The two power supplies are controlled by resistance programming. A bank of resistors and relays was built which can be switched by the control computer to provide control over the charge current to the batteries. The load banks are controlled by the 3497A. The 3497A is equipped with a 0.5 volt programmable power supply which is used to voltage program the load banks. A Hewlett-Packard Vectra 9000 running an HP Basic program is used as the control computer to remotely instruct the 3497A (data acquisition and control) to scan the data channels and retrieve test data. The program then reads, calculates, and stores the data. If an anomaly occurs, the program will disconnect the cells and shut down the test to avoid damage to the cells or equipment.

Output data formatter for the Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer (ESTAR) instrument

A prototype Output Data Formatter (ODF) for the ESTAR (Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer) instrument has been designed and tested. It employs programmable logic devices to format and tag correlator data for transmission to Earth. After accepting 170 bits or correlator and error data in parallel, it appends an identification word and then serially passes the data to the Small Explorer Data System (SEDS) for transmission at a maximum rate of greater than 15 Mb/sec. Implemented with two reprogrammable field programmable gate arrays (FPGA's), each contained in a 132-pin plastic pin grid array (PGA) package, the design is cascadeable, fully testable, and low-power.

Splash 2

Splash 2 is an attached processor system for Sun SPARC 2 workstations that uses Xilinx 4010 Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA's) as its processing elements. The purpose of this paper is to describe Splash 2. The predecessor system, Splash 1, was designed to be used as a systolic processing system. Although it was very successful in that mode, there were many other applications that were not systolic, but which were successful, nonetheless, on Splash 1, or that were not implemented successfully due to one or more architectural limitations, most notably I/O bandwidth and interprocessor communication. Although other uses to increase computational performance have been found for the Xilinx FPGA's that are Splash's processing elements. Splash is unique in its goal to be programmable in a general sense.

Polarimetric Multispectral Imaging Technology

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing a remote sensing technology on which a new generation of compact, lightweight, high-resolution, low-power, reliable, versatile, programmable scientific polarimetric multispectral imaging instruments can be built to meet the challenge of future planetary exploration missions. The instrument is based on the fast programmable acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) of tellurium dioxide (TeO2) that operates in the wavelength range of 0.4-5 microns. Basically, the AOTF multispectral imaging instrument measures incoming light intensity as a function of spatial coordinates, wavelength, and polarization. Its operation can be in either sequential, random access, or multiwavelength mode as required. This provides observation flexibility, allowing real-time alternation among desired observations, collecting needed data only, minimizing data transmission, and permitting implementation of new experiments. These will result in optimization of the mission performance with minimal resources. Recently we completed a polarimetric multispectral imaging prototype instrument and performed outdoor field experiments for evaluating application potentials of the technology. We also investigated potential improvements on AOTF performance to strengthen technology readiness for applications. This paper will give a status report on the technology and a prospect toward future planetary exploration.
