Magnetron tuner has locking feature

Magnetron tuning arrangement features a means of moving a tuning ring axially within an anode cavity by a system of reduction gears engaging a threaded tuning shaft of lead screw. The shaft positions the tuning ring for the desired magnetron output frequency, and a washer prevents backlash.

Connect-disconnect coupling for preadjusted rigid shafts

Coupling device enables a rigid shaft to be connected to or disconnected from a fixed base without disturbing the point of adjustment of the shaft in a socket or causing the shaft to rotate. The coupling consists of an externally threaded, internally slotted boss extending from the fixed base.

Adjustable flow restrictor

Flow-rate restrictor with sharp-edged threads generates turbulence in the fluid flow, providing greater pressure reduction than is possible with a smooth-walled device. It is less susceptible to clogging.

Connector locking device

Slidable spring-loaded locking device eliminates need for safety wiring. Locking device is placed between the connector plug and connector receptacle. The threaded plug cannot vibrate loose because the insert is wedged into slots formed on the outer diameter of the receptacle.

Compact fluid-flow restrictor

Fluid-flow restrictor has degree of restriction easily and accurately controlled during manufacture. Restrictor's flow channel is machined square thread around a solid slug which is shrink-fitted to cylindrical case. One end of case is closed, open end capped, and both ends tapped for tube fittings for fluid flow.

The equilibrium and stability of the gaseous component of the galaxy, 3

The stability of a self-gravitating, nonrotating, isothermal gas layer threaded by a one-dimensional equipartition magnetic field, immersed in a rigid isothermal layer of stars, is considered with respect to waves with motions in and perpendicular to the X plane, where X is the equilibrium magnetic and gravitational field vectors. When motions are perpendicular to the X plane, the magnetic field hinders gravitational instability, increasing the minimum length necessary to produce instability by the factor (1 + alpha) to the 1/2 power, where alpha is the ratio of magnetic pressure to gas pressure. When motions are in the plane, no such simple analytical solution is found. However, the resulting system of equations reduces to a single fourth order differential equation in the perturbed gas potential that defines an eigenvalue problem for the marginally unstable state when the four appropriate boundary conditions are considered.

Morphological relationships in the chromospheric H-alpha fine structure

A continuous relationship is proposed between the basic elements of the dark fine structure of the quiet and active chromosphere. A progression from chromospheric bushes to fibrils, then to chromospheric threads and active region filaments, and finally to diffuse quiescent filaments, is described. It is shown that the horizontal component of the field on opposite sides of an active region quiescent filament can be in the same direction and closely parallel to the filament axis. Consequently, it is unnecessary to postulate twisted or otherwise complex field configurations to reconcile the support mechanism of filaments with the observed motion along their axis.

Comparison of polyester, film-yarn composite, balloon materials subjected to shear and biaxial loading

A series of candidate materials for use in large balloons was tested and their tensile and shear strength capabilities were compared. The tests were done in a cold box at -68 C (-90 F). Some of these materials were fabricated on a special machine called the flying thread loom. This machine laminates various patterns of polyester yarn to a thin polyester film. The results show that the shear strength of materials changes with the angle selected for the transverse yarns, and substantial increases in biaxial load carrying capabilities, compared to materials formerly used, are possible. The loom capabilities and the test methods are discussed.

Advances in cryogenic foam insulations.

Description of a discretely oriented thread-reinforced polyurethane foam thermal insulation system for liquid hydrogen fuel tanks. The 3-D foam and glass liner composite is designed to be adhesively bonded to the inside surface of the tank wall and to be in direct contact with liquid hydrogen. All elements of this insulation composite are capable of sustaining the loads and environmental conditions imposed by testing under simulated Space Shuttle vehicle requirements at temperatures between -423 and +350 F.

Arterial and grooved cryogenic heat pipes.

Tests were conducted on two cryogenic heat pipes using nitrogen as the working fluid. Both pipes are 1.27 cm in diameter. The first pipe is 141 cm long and uses longitudinal grooves in the aluminum wall as the wick structure. The second pipe is 91 cm long and has an arterial wick adjacent to the wall. In addition, circumferential screw threads are machined along the entire length of the inside pipe wall. Both heat pipes primed with no difficulty in the horizontal position. Start-up after burn-out was obtained repeatedly. However, more testing is required to determine whether the artery pipe is as reliable as the grooved pipe with respect to priming. Once primed, the artery heat pipe is much less sensitive to elevation than the grooved design and, consequently, offers a significant advantage with respect to ground testing. Heat-transfer characteristics of the two pipes were comparable, with both pipes achieving the initial goal of 1000 watt-cm of heat-transport capability.

Extreme-ultraviolet observations of a surge.

Observation of a flare surge at the limb in C III 977 A by the Harvard OSO 6 spectroheliometer. The kinematic behavior of the surge is the same in C III and in H alpha. The amount of C III emission is consistent with a model in which the C III ions occupy sheaths with a thickness of about 100 km surrounding the cooler H alpha-emitting threads. The mass of the material containing C III ions is about 0.01 times that emitting H alpha.
