Magnetic field-induced non-trivial electronic topology in Fe3− x GeTe2

The anomalous Hall, Nernst, and thermal Hall coefficients of the itinerant ferromagnet Fe3−xGeTe2 display anomalies upon cooling that are consistent with a topological transition that could induce deviations with respect to the Wiedemann–Franz (WF) law. This law has not yet been validated for the anomalous transport variables, with recent experimental studies yielding material-dependent results. Nevertheless, the anomalous Hall and thermal Hall coefficients of Fe3−xGeTe2 are found, within our experimental accuracy, to satisfy the WF law for magnetic fields μ0H applied along its c axis. Remarkably, large anomalous transport is also observed for μ0H||a axis with the field aligned along the gradient of the chemical potential generated by thermal gradients or electrical currents, a configuration that should not lead to their observation. These anomalous planar quantities are found to not scale with the component of the planar magnetization (M||), showing instead a sharp decrease beyond μ0H||= 4 T or the field required to align the magnetic moments along μ0H||. We argue that chiral spin structures associated with Bloch domain walls lead to a field-dependent spin chirality that produces a novel type of topological transport in the absence of interaction between the magnetic field and electrical or thermal currents. Locally chiral spin structures are captured by our Monte Carlo simulations incorporating small Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and biquadratic exchange interactions. These observations reveal not only a new way to detect and expose topological excitations, but also a new configuration for heat conversion that expands the current technological horizon for thermoelectric energy applications.

Magnetostructural behavior in the non-centrosymmetric compound Nd 7 Pd 3

A systematic study of the physical properties and microscopic magnetism of Nd 7 Pd 3 compound, which in the paramagnetic state crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric hexagonal Th 7 Fe 3 -type structure [hP20-P6 3 mc; with a = 10.1367(1) Å and c = 6.3847(1) Å at 300 K], confirms multiple magnetic ordering transitions that occur upon cooling. Antiferromagnetic transition is observed at T N = 37 K, which is followed by ferromagnetic transformation at T C = 33 K. The first-order magnetic transition at TC is magnetoelastic: it involves a change of crystal symmetry from P6 3 mc to Cmc2 1 and leads to anisotropic changes of the unit cell parameters. While the antiferromagnetic structure is symmetry allowed in P6 3 mc, the ferromagnetic structure with magnetic moments along the a-direction of the original hexagonal unit cell induces the first order transition to Cmc21. Density functional theory calculations confirm the experimentally observed ground state with the a-axis as the easy magnetization direction.

Spin-orbit coupled systems in the atomic limit: rhenates, osmates, iridates

Motivated by RIXS experiments on a wide range of complex heavy oxides, including rhenates, osmates, and iridates, we discuss the theory of RIXS for site-localized t 2 g orbital systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. For such systems, we present exact diagonalization results for the spectrum at different electron fillings, showing that it accesses “single-particle” and “multiparticle” excitations. This leads to a simple picture for the energies and intensities of the RIXS spectra in Mott insulators such as double perovskites which feature highly localized electrons, and yields estimates of the spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling in correlated 5d oxides. We present new higher resolution RIXS data at the Re L 3 edge in Ba 2 YReO 6 which finds a previously unresolved peak splitting, providing further confirmation of our theoretical predictions. Using ab initio electronic structure calculations on Ba 2 MReO 6 (with M=Re, Os, Ir) we show that while the atomic limit yields a reasonable effective Hamiltonian description of the experimental observations, effects such as t 2 g –e g interactions and hybridization with oxygen are important. Our ab initio estimate for the strength of the intersite exchange coupling shows that, compared to the d 3 systems, the exchange is one or two orders of magnitude weaker in the d 2 and d 4 materials, which may partly explain the suppression of long-range magnetic order in the latter compounds. As a way to interpolate between the site-localized picture and our electronic structure band calculations, we discuss the spin-orbital levels of the MO 6 cluster. In conclusion, this suggests a possible role for intracluster excitons in Ba 2 YIrO 6 which may lead to a weak breakdown of the atomic J eff = 0 picture and to small magnetic moments.

Systematic control of strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in epitaxial europium and terbium iron garnet thin films

We show tunable strain-induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) over a wide range of thicknesses in epitaxial ferrimagnetic insulator Eu 3 Fe 5 O 12 (EuIG) and Tb 3 Fe 5 O 12 (TbIG) thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition on Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 with (001) and (111) orientations, respectively. The PMA field is determined by measuring the induced anomalous Hall loops in Pt deposited on the garnet films. Due to positive magnetostriction constants, compressive in-plane strain induces a PMA field as large as 32.9 kOe for 4 nm thick EuIG and 66.7 kOe for 5 nm thick TbIG at 300 K and relaxes extremely slowly as the garnet film thickness increases. In bilayers consisting of Pt and EuIG or Pt and TbIG, robust PMA is revealed by squared anomalous Hall hysteresis loops in Pt, the magnitude of which appears to be only related to the net magnetic moment of iron sublattices. Furthermore, the magnetostriction constant is found to be 2.7 × 10 -5 for EuIG and 1.35 × 10 -5 for TbIG, comparable with the values for bulk crystals. Our results demonstrate a general approach of tailoring magnetic anisotropy of rare earth iron garnets by utilizing modulated strain via epitaxial growth.

Topological magnetic hysteresis in single crystals of CeAgSb 2 ferromagnet

Closed-topology magnetic domains are usually observed in thin films and in an applied magnetic field. In this work, we report the observation of rectangular cross-section tubular ferromagnetic domains in thick single crystals of CeAgSb 2 in zero applied field. Relatively low exchange energy, small net magnetic moment, and anisotropic in-plane crystal electric fields lower the domain wall energy and allow for the formation of the closed-topology patterns. The tubular domain structure irreversibly transforms into a dendritic pattern upon cycling the magnetic field. This transition between closed and open topologies results in a ‘topological magnetic hysteresis’— the actual hysteresis in magnetization, not due to the imperfections and pinning, but due to the difference in the pattern morphology. Similar physics was suggested before in pure type-I superconductors and is believed to be a generic feature of other nonlinear single (present case), or two-phase (type-I superconductor) systems where the effects similar to demagnetization (shape-dependent macroscopic variation of properties) lead to pattern formation.

Enhancement of charge-neutral fermionic excitations near the spin-flop transition in the magnetic Kondo material YbIr 3 Si 7

The new Kondo material YbIr 3 Si 7 , similar to other Kondo insulators, has been reported to exhibit charge-neutral fermionic excitations through measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity at low temperatures. We performed 29 Si-NMR on YbIr 3 Si 7 to investigate the magnetic response of charge-neutral fermions from a microscopic perspective. In low magnetic fields parallel to the c axis, a single NMR peak in the paramagnetic state splits into three peaks below TN. In contrast, only a slight shift of the single NMR peak was observed in high magnetic fields. This spectral change as a function of the c-axis magnetic field is interpreted as a spin-flop transition, at which the magnetic moments oriented along the c axis antiferromagnetic (AFM-I) phase are rotated to the ab plane with a ferromagnetic component along the c-axis (AFM-II phase). In the vicinity of the spin-flop magnetic field H M , the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T 1 was found to be proportional to temperature at low temperatures, indicating the existence of charge-neutral fermions. Furthermore, a peak of 1/T 1 versus the c-axis magnetic field suggests that the charge-neutral fermions in YbIr 3 Si 7 are closely related to its magnetic properties. Our findings shed light on the origin of charge-neutral fermions in insulators.

Electrical Control of Structural and Physical Properties via Strong Spin-Orbit Interactions in Sr 2 IrO 4

Electrical control of structural and physical properties is a long-sought, but elusive goal of contemporary science and technology. We propose that a combination of strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI) and a canted antiferromagnetic Mott state is sufficient to attain that goal. The antiferromagnetic insulator Sr 2 IrO 4 provides a model system in which strong SOI lock canted Ir magnetic moments to IrO6 octahedra, causing them to rigidly rotate together. A novel coupling between an applied electrical current and the canting angle reduces the N´eel temperature and drives a large, nonlinear lattice expansion that closely tracks the magnetization, increases the electron mobility, and precipitates a unique resistive switching effect. Our studies open new avenues for understanding fundamental physics driven by strong SOI in condensed matter, and provide a new paradigm for functional materials and devices.

Spin Seebeck Effect from Antiferromagnetic Magnons and Critical Spin Fluctuations in Epitaxial FeF 2 Films

We report a longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (SSE) study in epitaxially grown FeF 2 (110) antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films with strong uniaxial anisotropy over the temperature range of 3.8–250 K. Both the magnetic-field and temperature-dependent SSE signals below the Néel temperature (T N = 70 K) of the FeF 2 films are consistent with a theoretical model based on the excitations of AFM magnons without any net induced static magnetic moment. In addition to the characteristic low-temperature SSE peak associated with the AFM magnons, there is another SSE peak at T N which extends well into the paramagnetic phase. All the SSE data taken at different magnetic fields up to 12 T near and above the critical point T N follow the critical scaling law very well with the critical exponents for magnetic susceptibility of 3D Ising systems, which suggests that the AFM spin correlation is responsible for the observed SSE near T N .

Competition of magnetocrystalline anisotropy of uranium layers and zigzag chains in UNi 0.34 Ge 2 single crystals

Structural and thermodynamic properties of single-crystalline UNi 1-x Ge 2 with x = 0.66 have been investigated by measuring magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The measurements revealed the emergence of a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of uranium magnetic moments below the Néel temperature T N = 45.5 (1) K and the existence of two easy axes in the studied compound, namely b and c, which correspond to the planes of the uranium zig-zag chains. A magnetic field applied along these two crystallographic directions induces in the system a first-order metamagnetic phase transition (from antiferromagnetic to field-polarized paramagnetism), and the width of the magnetic hysteresis associated with that transition reaches as much as 40 kOe at the lowest temperatures. A magnetic phase diagram developed from the experimental data showed that the metastable region associated with that magnetic hysteresis forms a funnel that narrows toward the N´eel point in a zero magnetic field. The four-layer Ising model has successfully predicted the colinear antiferromagnetic structure in UNi 0.34 Ge 2 (known from earlier reports), its magnetic phase diagram, and temperature and field variations of its magnetization. Moreover, it suggests that the first-order phase transition extends down to zero magnetic field, although it is barely detectable in the experiments performed in low magnetic fields. According to this model, the second-order phase transition occurs in the compound only in zero field.

Hall effect in LaCrGe 3 at pressures up to 24 kbar and a 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram of the pressure-induced magnetic phase

LaCrGe 3 is a metallic, itinerant ferromagnet with 𝑇 𝐶 ≈ 86K and an easy magnetic direction along its hexagonal 𝑐 axis. Here we present studies of the 𝐻 ∥ 𝑐 Hall effect in LaCrGe 3 at ambient pressure and under pressures up to 24 kbar. At ambient pressure the anomalous Hall conductivity in the ferromagnetic state reaches a large value of ∼520 Ω − 1 cm −1 . The overall data are consistent with the behavior expected for a ferromagnet with magnetic field applied along its easy axis. Measurements under pressure yield an 𝐻 = 0, 𝑃−𝑇 phase diagram consistent with earlier publications with 𝑇 𝐶 being suppressed with pressure and nonferromagnetic phases appearing for 𝑃 >15 kbar. The data suggest that the observed 𝑇 𝐶 suppression is due to the pressure-dependent exchange interactions rather than suppression of the size of the magnetic moment. Field-dependent Hall resistivity in the higher-pressure, nonferromagnetic state is consistent with the net moment being zero for 𝐻=0. In a finite field there is a sharp anomaly comparable to the one associated with a spin-flip metamagnetic transition. The 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagrams corresponding to a pressure-induced magnetic phase are constructed for several pressures. In conclusion, the Hall data suggest the possibility of the pressure-induced nonferromagnetic phase being a combination of multiple small regions of antiferromagnetic phases with different wave vectors.

Magnetic cations doped into a double perovskite semiconductor

Here we report two solid solutions based on the magnetic ion doping of the double perovskite oxide Sr 2 GaSbO 6 : Sr 2 Ga 1-x Cr x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) and Sr 2 Ga 1-x Fe x SbO 6 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). All compositions crystallize in the same space group ($I4/m$) as their undoped parent phase Sr 2 GaSbO 6 , with the trivalent magnetic cations Cr 3+ or Fe 3+ partially substituting for non-magnetic Ga 3+ in one of the B-cation sites. The Cr- and Fe-doped phases display dominant antiferromagnetic coupling among the dopant magnetic moments, and exhibit decreasing band gaps with increasing substitution level.

Measurement of the anomalous spin precession frequency $\omega_\alpha$ in the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab

The Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly, $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, with a final accuracy of 0.14 parts per million (ppm). A $3.1$-GeV muon beam is injected into a storage ring of $14\,$m diameter, in the presence of a $1.45\,$T magnetic field. The anomaly $a_\mu$ can be extracted by accurately measuring the anomalous muon spin precession frequency $\omega_a$, based on the arrival time distribution of decay positrons observed by $24$ calorimeters, and the magnetic field. In 2023, the experiment published its second result based on the two datasets Run-2 and Run-3, reaching the unprecedented sensitivity of $0.21\,$ppm --- a factor $\sim2.2$ improvement since its first result published in 2021, based on the first dataset (Run-1). In this paper, we will focus on the measurement of the $\omega_a$ frequency, describing the techniques and major sources of systematic uncertainty in the 2023 publication, and outlining the improvements since the 2021 result. We will also cover the status of the ongoing $\omega_a$ analysis for the last three datasets, collected from 2020 to 2023, along with the projected uncertainties on the final Muon $g-2$ measurement at Fermilab.

Beaming of Uranian kilometric radiation and implications for the planetary magnetic field

Radio waves from Uranus at 481.2 kHz detected by Voyager 2 show a strong beaming effect. When the data are analyzed according to the magnetic latitude of the observer in an offset tilted dipole field model, a sharply defined emission beam extending from 25 to 55 deg latitude is evident consistent with a source over the south magnetic pole. The lack of prominent emission from the north magnetic pole can be attributed to the large spatial offset of the magnetic dipole resulting in much lower source frequencies. For proper alignment of the beam, an advance of the dipole axis longitude by 23 deg from the standard model is required. This phase shift is interpreted as the result of higher order magnetic moments producing a skew of the field lines at low altitudes in the polar source region. This conclusion further substantiates models of the interior of Uranus which predict a complex intrinsic field with significant nondipolar contributions to the surface magnetic field.

Data-driven studies of magnetic two-dimensional materials

We use a data-driven approach to study the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of van der Waals (vdW) layered materials. We investigate monolayers of the form A 2 B 2 X 6 , based on the known material Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 , using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and machine learning methods to determine their magnetic properties, such as magnetic order and magnetic moment. We also examine formation energies and use them as a proxy for chemical stability. We show that machine learning tools, combined with DFT calculations, can provide a computationally efficient means to predict properties of such two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials. Our data analytics approach provides insights into the microscopic origins of magnetic ordering in these systems. For instance, we find that the X site strongly affects the magnetic coupling between neighboring A sites, which drives the magnetic ordering. Our approach opens new ways for rapid discovery of chemically stable vdW materials that exhibit magnetic behavior.
