Flowand transport within porous- and microtextured-walled channels is relevant to a number of natural and industrial processes. Designing and optimizing the topology of the pores and/or microstructure to achieve target performance at the system scale (or macroscale) is still an open question. In this work, we study whether hydrodynamic dispersion in microfluidic channels with walls structured by obstacles can be modeled by dispersion in channels with porous walls described as continuous porous media of zero or finite permeability. We perform single phase microfluidic non-reactive flow experiments in channels embedded in micropatterns with different topologies. Specifically, we focus on transverse riblets and arrays of pillars as examples of impermeable and permeable obstructions, respectively. We compare the experimental results with three models: 3D pore-scale simulations which resolve the micropattern geometry explicitly and two upscaled models which treat the micropattern as a continuum of zero or finite permeability. This study demonstrates that polydimethylsiloxane micromodels with appropriately patterned surfaces can be successfully employed to validate various continuum-scale modeling approximations in different physical regimes, identified by the order of magnitude of the Peclet number and the obstruction permeability.
Motivated by the significant biological functions of polysulfides in life processes and important applications of sodium polysulfides in battery sciences, herein we report a joint experimental and computational study on the electronic and geometric structures of a series of NaSn- (n = 5-9) clusters. The cryogenic, size-selective, negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) is employed to obtain their photoelectron spectra, in which distinctive spectral features with electron binding energy (EBE) up to 6.4 eV are unraveled. The EBE of the first peak in each spectrum for NaSn- (n =5-9), assigned to the transition from the ground state of anion to the ground state of each neutral radical, is observed to increase with cluster size. The vertical detachment energies (VDEs), determined from the first peak maximum, are 3.43 ± 0.02, 3.57 ± 0.02, 3.82 ± 0.03, 3.86 ± 0.02, and 4.00 ± 0.02 eV and the adiabatic detachment energies (ADEs), determined by the onset of the first peak, are 3.27 ± 0.05, 3.44 ± 0.05, 3.65 ± 0.05, 3.75 ± 0.05, and 3.93 ± 0.05 eV, for n = 5-9, respectively. A plural of low-lying isomers of anions are screened and identified with density functional theory calculations, showing that all featuring preference for a chain-like polysulfide moiety electrostatically interacted with a sodium cation. The calculated VDEs and ADEs using the high-level CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ method are in excellent agreement with experimental results, further confirming the identified isomers as most stable ones. Further analyses based on the excited-state transition, molecular orbitals and natural population charge are performed to assign all observed spectral bands along the binding energy axis, suggesting that the electron detachment process and observed excitations mainly derived from the polysulfide chain of NaSn- clusters. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic molecular properties of sodium polysulfide systems, which widely exist in life science and sodium-sulfur cells.

Here, in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments were conducted in the system Li-O-Br at pressures up to 6.5 GPa and temperatures up to the melting points. The thermal equation of state determined from the P–V–T measurements indicates that crystalline anti-perovskite Li 3 OBr exhibits similar thermo-elastic properties to common salts. At temperatures that are 50–75 °C below the crystal melting, a pre-melting behavior was inferred based on weakened Bragg intensity and a substantial increase in the diffuse scattering. Concurrent with the onset of pre-melting, an anomalous increase in the lattice volume was observed and is interpreted as anion sublattice disorder. These findings support previous ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on a simple anion interchange mechanism, indicating that structural disorder below crystal melting temperature can be a main driving force for Li-sublattice melting and superionic transition in the Li 3 OBr anti-perovskite.

In situ grazing-incidence X-ray scattering shows here that a monolayer of artificial rod-shaped dipolar molecular rotors produced on the surface of an aqueous subphase in a Langmuir trough has a structure conducive to a 2D ferroelectric phase. The axes of the rotors stand an average of 0.83 nm apart in a triangular grid, perpendicular to the surface within experimental error. They carry 2,3-dichlorophenylene rotators near rod centers, between two decks of interlocked triptycenes installed axially on the rotor axle. The analysis is based first on simultaneous fitting of observed Bragg rods and second on fitting the reflectivity curve with only three adjustable parameters and the calculated rotor electron density, which also revealed the presence of about seven molecules of water near each rotator. Dependent on preparation conditions, a minor and variable amount of a different crystal phase may also be present in the monolayer.

Significance Phytochromes are well-known far-red-light sensors found in plants that trigger adaptive responses to facilitate competition for light capture with neighboring plants. Red- and far-red sensing are also critical for cyanobacteria living in the far-red–enriched shade of plants. This work reports the crystal structure of a far-red–sensing cyanobacteriochrome, a distant cyanobacterial relative of phytochrome. These studies shed insights into the molecular basis of far-red-sensing by phycobilin-based photoreceptors. Owing to the deep tissue penetration of far-red light, far-red–sensing cyanobacteriochromes are promising protein scaffolds for developing genetically encoded photoswitches, optoacoustic contrast agents, and fluorescent probes for in situ imaging and optogenetic applications.
Liquid polymorphism is an intriguing phenomenon which has been found in a few single-component systems, the most famous being water. By supercooling liquid Te to more than 130 K below its melting point and performing simultaneous small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements, we observe clear maxima in its thermodynamic response functions around 615 K, suggesting the possible existence of liquid polymorphism. A close look at the underlying structural evolution shows the development of intermediate-range order upon cooling, most strongly around the thermodynamic maxima, which we attribute to bond-orientational ordering. The striking similarities between our results and those of water, despite the lack of hydrogen-bonding and tetrahedrality in tellurium, indicate that water-like anomalies may be a general phenomenon among liquid systems with competing bond- and density-ordering.
