ACROSS: Enabling Time Domain and Multi-Messenger Astrophysics

The U.S. Astro2020 Decadal Survey recommended an investment in Time Domain and Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (TDAMM) as the top-priority sustaining activity in space for the coming decade. One aspect of NASA’s response to this rec-ommendation is a pilot project, the Astrophysics Cross-Observatory Science Support (ACROSS) Initiative, designed to provide support to both missions and observers as they pursue TDAMM science. In this talk, we present our observations of needs in the community and initial plans for ACROSS activities, including services to facilitate and improve cross-mission follow-up planning and execution; a multi-messenger web portal with links to existing mission resources, community tools, and information tar-geted for TDAMM General Observers; development of "Smart Target of Opportunity submission page" proof-of-concepts; and ongoing development of a potential TDAMM general observing competitive grant solicitation. While the initial focus has been to en-hance coordination between NASA missions, we are eager to work with ground-based and international partners as well. We invite discussion with both missions and ob-servers to better understand their needs and concerns as ACROSS progresses. Here we present our efforts on the web-portal and API, along with our development to support NASA’s BurstCube mission.

AmesDT: Digital Twin and Autonomy Validation Environment

A simulation of NASA Ames Research Center was developed to provide a common testbed for multiple areas of research within the Intelligent Systems Division, primarily related to verification and validation of autonomous technologies, machine learning, and digital twin systems. AmesSim corresponds a physical rover that is capable of navigation in the real-world environment; in this way, the same experiments can be run in both settings, with the same software and hardware stacks in the loop. The simulation is built in Unreal Engine 4 and uses the AirSim plugin for API convenience. Several custom modifications allow deterministic, faster-than-realtime execution, which enables consistent testing of on-line algorithms and large-scale data collection. This paper describes the architecture and capabilities of the simulation and discusses development challenge.

Thermoplastic Matrix Composite Design for Cryotanks Using Multiscale Modeling and Bayesian Optimization

Designing lightweight, robust cryogenic storage tanks is critical for future launch vehicles, in-space propellant storage, and hydrogen powered aircraft. This work presents a multiscale modeling and Bayesian optimization framework for the design of thermoplastic matrix composite cryotanks. Molecular dynamics simulations are first used to determine temperature-dependent constituent properties for candidate thermoplastic matrices, which are homogenized to the lamina scale using NASA’s Multiscale Analysis Tool (NASMAT). These lamina properties, in combination with laminate family generation rules, are evaluated in HyperX structural optimization software to identify stacking sequences that meet all cryogenic load requirements. A Bayesian optimization framework is applied, with HyperX in the loop (via the HyperX API) to efficiently search across material and laminate design variables, yielding an optimized cryotank configuration with significant reductions in design cycle time compared to exhaustive search approaches.

NASA POWER: Providing Analysis-Ready, Cloud-Optimized Data for AI /ML Training and Applications in Earth Science

As global demand for sustainable development grows, the integration of Earth Observation (EO) data into decision making frameworks has become a primary objective for the scientific community. The NASA Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) project serves as a bridge between NASA EO data and the specialized needs of the renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and agroclimatology communities. In this poster presentation we will present an overview of POWER data products and services along with its use in diverse research to decision-making workflows. By providing over 40 years of high-resolution historical, hourly and daily solar and meteorological data, POWER transforms satellite observations and global model reanalysis into actionable, Analysis-Ready Dataset (ARD). Currently, the project delivers over 250 industry-friendly parameters to the users from different NASA datasets like CERES SYN1Deg, MERRA-2, and IMERG alongside downscaled CMIP6 climate model data, fulfilling over 16 million requests from 50,000 unique users monthly. To ensure data quality and traceability, these parameters are rigorously validated against the ground-based observations from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) and the Global Surface Summary of the Day (GSOD) – these results will be discussed in the presentation. A newly introduced web-based PaRameter Uncertainty ViEwer (PRUVE) tool will be presented that provides an online validation platform to the users that benchmarks satellite-based and assimilation data products against these surface measurements. To reduce technical barriers to data adoption, POWER data is accessible through RESTful APIs, ESRI ArcGIS Image Services, a web-based Data Access Viewer tool, allowing users to visualize, validate and apply the dataset. For efficient data delivery POWER data is cloud-optimized into Zarr datastore accessible through NASA managed Amazon S3 ensures high-performance allowing users to integrate EO directly into operational pipelines. These customized services will be presented. Use cases from application will be presented from the energy sector - such as for design of generation systems, performance monitoring of solar power plants, in infrastructure sector- optimizing building energy efficiency and thermal comfort, in agriculture – such as driving crop simulation and yield forecasting models to enable climate resilient farming. Furthermore, the shift toward machine learning (ML) in EO research that has positioned POWER as a key provider for training datasets which will be discussed. Use-cases will be presented to showcase how NASA data is enabling the development of predictive tools for climate variability and resource management. The poster will present POWER’s future plans including technology development to enhance data traceability and reproducibility and improving I/O performance to support the rapid integration of new EO products, ensuring that POWER remains a robust scalable backend for the evolving landscape of AI-driven Earth Science. Additionally, POWER is developing an AI Agent and an MCP-Server to enable industry AI-Agentic workflows.

ArrayBridge: Interweaving declarative array processing with high-performance computing

Scientists are increasingly turning to datacenter-scale computers to produce and analyze massive arrays. Despite decades of database research that extols the virtues of declarative query processing, scientists still write, debug and parallelize imperative HPC kernels even for the most mundane queries. This impedance mismatch has been partly attributed to the cumbersome data loading process; in response, the database community has proposed in situ mechanisms to access data in scientific file formats. Scientists, however, desire more than a passive access method that reads arrays from files. This paper describes ArrayBridge, a bi-directional array view mechanism for scientific file formats, that aims to make declarative array manipulations interoperable with imperative file-centric analyses. Our prototype implementation of ArrayBridge uses HDF5 as the underlying array storage library and seamlessly integrates into the SciDB open-source array database system. In addition to fast querying over external array objects, ArrayBridge produces arrays in the HDF5 file format just as easily as it can read from it. ArrayBridge also supports time travel queries from imperative kernels through the unmodified HDF5 API, and automatically deduplicates between array versions for space efficiency. Our extensive performance evaluation in NERSC, a large-scale scientific computing facility, shows that ArrayBridge exhibits statistically indistinguishable performance and I/O scalability to the native SciDB storage engine.

Coupling Visualization, Simulation, and Deep Learning for Ensemble Steering of Complex Energy Models: Preprint

We have developed a framework for the exploration, design, and planning of energy systems that combines interactive visualization with machine-learning based approximations of simulations through a general purpose dataflow API. Our system provides a visual inter- face allowing users to explore an ensemble of energy simulations representing a subset of the complex input parameter space, and spawn new simulations to 'fill in' input regions corresponding to new enegery system scenarios. Unfortunately, many energy simula- tions are far too slow to provide interactive responses. To support interactive feedback, we are developing reduced-form models via machine learning techniques, which provide statistically sound esti- mates of the full simulations at a fraction of the computational cost and which are used as proxies for the full-form models. Fast com- putation and an agile dataflow enhance the engagement with energy simulations, and allow researchers to better allocate computational resources to capture informative relationships within the system and provide a low-cost method for validating and quality-checking large-scale modeling efforts.

UNITY: Unified Memory and File Space

This paper describes the vision for UNITY, a new high-performance computing focused data storage abstraction that places the entire memory hierarchy, including both traditionally separated memoryand file-based data storage, into one storage continuum. Through the use of a novel API and a set of services centered around a smart runtime system, UNITY is able to provide a number of valuable and interesting benefits. The unified storage space provides a scalable and resilient data environment that dynamically manages the mapping of data onto available resources based on multiple factors, including desired persistence and energy budget considerations. By eliminating the need for high-performance computing domain scientists to develop architecture-dependent optimizations for rapidly evolving data storage technologies, UNITY addresses both ease-of-use and performance.

Democratizing Network Reservations through Application-Aware Orchestration

The provisioning of network connections for data transfers that provide quality of service (QoS) over research and education (R&E) networks is currently performed by network operators. For network connections that span multiple administrative domains, network operators have to reach agreements on reservation requirements. As a result, a network reservation request may take from days to weeks to be provisioned. To improve provisioning times and the success rate of multidomain network reservations, we designed and implemented an application-aware orchestration framework for multidomain R&E networks. This framework leverages latest developments in software-defined networking to automate network provisioning in order to democratize access to network reservation through novel APIs. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of our application-aware orchestration framework. We evaluate our system using Mininet and demonstrate that it provisions 49% more reservations than current state-of-the-art systems within seconds of receiving a request.

An Initial Implementation of Libfabric Conduit for OpenSHMEM-X

As a representative of Partitioned Global Address Space models, OpenSHMEM provides a variety of functionalities including one-sided communication, atomic operations, and collective routines. The communication layer of OpenSHMEM-X plays a crucial role for its functionalities. OFI Libfabric is an open-source network library that supports portable low-latency interfaces from different fabric providers while minimizing the semantic gap across API endpoints. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of OpenSHMEM-X communication conduit using Libfabric. This Libfabric conduit is designed to support a broad range of network providers while achieving excellent network performance and scalability. We have performed an extensive set of experiments to validate the performance of our implementation, and compared with the Sandia OpenSHMEM implementation. Our results show that the Libfabric conduit improves the communication bandwidth on the socket provider by up to 42% and 11%, compared to an alternative OpenSHMEM implementation for put and get operations, respectively. In addition, our implementation of atomic operations has achieved similar latency to that of the Sandia implementation.

Fishing for Clickbaits in Social Images and Texts with Linguistically-Infused Neural Network Models

This paper presents the results and conclusions of our participation in the Clickbait Challenge 2017 on automatic clickbait detection in social media. We first describe linguistically-infused neural network models and identify informative representations to predict the level of clickbaiting present in Twitter posts. Our models allow to answer the question not only whether a post is a clickbait or not, but to what extent it is a clickbait post e.g., not at all, slightly, considerably, or heavily clickbaity using a score ranging from 0 to 1. We evaluate the predictive power of models trained on varied text and image representations extracted from tweets. Our best performing model that relies on the tweet text and linguistic markers of biased language extracted from the tweet and the corresponding page yields mean squared error (MSE) of 0.04, mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.16 and R2 of 0.43 on the held-out test data. For the binary classification setup (clickbait vs. non-clickbait), our model achieved F1 score of 0.69. We have not found that image representations combined with text yield significant performance improvement yet. Nevertheless, this work is the first to present preliminary analysis of objects extracted using Google Tensorflow object detection API from images in clickbait vs. non-clickbait Twitter posts. Finally, we outline several steps to improve model performance as a part of the future work.

Urban Traveler - Changes and Impacts: Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) Metric

In response to the need to assess fundamental improvements in mobility as technology provides new modes, methods and opportunities in urban areas to connect people with goods, services and employment, a mobility-energy productivity (MEP) metric has been developed. The MEP metric fundamentally measures the potential of a multi-modal system to connect people to a variety of services and activities that define a high-quality of life. The MEP metric is measured relative to the cost, convenience and energy needed to provide connectivity. Fundamentally derived from accessibility theory, the MEP metric advances practice by using readily available travel time data (either from web-based APIs or outputs from an urban transportation model) combined with established parameters that reflect the cost, and energy intensity of various travel modes, along with relative frequency of activity engagement. The construction of the MEP metric allows for aggregation and disaggregation to the appropriate spatial, modal, and trip purpose resolution, as analysis needs dictate. The MEP metric could be used to compare alternative futures related to technology, infrastructure investment, or policy, providing a much needed tool for planners, researchers, and analysts.

AutoGen: World's Fastest Building Energy Model Creator - Text Replacement for Variables for EnergyPlus files

AutoGen is the world's fastest EnergyPlus input file generator based on a base input file and sets of input variables. It has a simple user interface where a user can specify the directories and names of base input EnergyPlus file, list of input parameters to vary and metrics with the range of input values and a directory where the files will be generated. AutoGen uses OpenMP API to generate a large number of input files. It takes a base EnergyPlus input files (or a group of base Energyplus input files) along with a text or excel file with an input parameter to be varied and sensitivity metrics (i.e. the range of each input variables) of the input variables. It then uses Open PMP to perform the parallelization to generate the EnergyPlus files for all the permutation and combinations if input carriables as per the sensitivity metrics file. With AutoGen millions of files can be generated within a few minutes.

Data Management Challenges of Exascale Scientific Simulations: A Case Study with the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code and ADIOS

The push towards exascale computing and the recent introduction of multi-petascale supercomputers have enabled science applications to run complex simulations. However, the gap between compute and I/O has grown wider, even as applications seek to generate and persist increasing amounts of data. Optimizing I/O is challenging and remains a bottleneck at scale. In this paper, we present initial I/O performance results of running Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC) on Summit, a 200 Petaflop system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. To manage the complex data in GTC, we use ADIOS, an I/O and data management middleware that provides a rich set of APIs to manage and interact with scientific data. We discuss optimizations performed to obtain improvements in I/O performance and identify a set of challenges that will drive the design and development of next generation data management libraries.
