Stacked reverberation mapping of high-redshift quasars in DESI. I. Feasibility analysis

The broad-line region of quasars has long been probed by reverberation mapping techniques that measure time lags between continuum and broad emission-line variations. Stacked reverberation mapping has been proposed as a less observationally expensive alternative to traditional methods. This ensemble approach also reduces biases from small-number statistics. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is conducting the most extensive spectroscopic survey of quasars to date. We create mock light curves emulating expected DESI quasar observations at redshifts $1.48\lt z\lt 5.2$ and luminosities $44.68 \le \log \lambda L_{1350 \mathring{\rm A}{}} / \mathrm{erg\, s^{-1}} \le 45.99$ to test stacked reverberation mapping feasibility using sparse spectroscopic data paired with well-sampled photometric data. The pipeline, using the lag estimation code JAVELIN (Just Another Vehicle for Estimating Lags In Nuclei), successfully recovers the simulated C IV lags within 1σ of the true values using spectroscopic light curves composed of only a few spectral epochs (2–10) with irregular cadences. We investigate how observational factors, including C IV flux error magnitude, number of stacked quasars, and spectral epoch count, affect performance. This work motivates a pathway for future stacked reverberation mapping projects with large-scale spectroscopic surveys of quasars having $\ge 2$ spectroscopic observations. Our results suggest an economical alternative for constraining and extending the radius–luminosity relation to higher redshifts and luminosities. Subsequently, this relation can be employed more reliably in single-epoch black hole mass measurements and quasar cosmology in these distant regimes.

Planned FY19 Creep and Fatigue Design Curve Testing of Alloy 709 Base Metal

This report summarizes the status of planned FY 2019 creep and fatigue testing of the first commercial heat of Alloy 709 base metal at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). A comprehensive master creep testing matrix was generated to support the ASME code qualification of Alloy 709. The testing activities and research are carried out at Argonne National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory and ORNL. ORNL was tasked to carry out a subset of the creep Code Case testing matrix for electroslag remelt (ESR) with solution annealing (S/A) at 1100°C in FY 2019. In this reporting cycle, 25 creep tests were started and 9 of them produced rupture data. The remaining 16 tests of ESR with S/A at 1100°C, along with 6 long-term creep tests of argon-oxygen-decarburization with S/A at 1100°C, are ongoing.

The Applicability of Unit Systems to High-Performance Computing Applications

Dimensional analysis is a key technique used to verify the soundness of scientific models. Most experts agree that engineering and scientific software would be made more reliable by integrating dimensional analysis in their type system. We explored how High Performance Computing (HPC) applications could integrate compile-time dimensional analysis. We started by investigating various implementation of unit systems for C++. Eventually, selecting the latest (and most advanced) one to apply to our test codes. We worked with code of increasing complexity, from a projectile trajectory calculation to the proxy-application Lulesh. This included our code, Springs-3D, which focuses on demonstrating language features while performing simple physic computations. Finally, our main contribution is a source-code analysis which extracts constraints on the dimension of all variables, functions, and constants in an application. This resulting system of equations is solved using the dimensions of a few of these objects. This analysis has the potential to greatly reduce the time spent performing dimensional analysis when refactoring application to use a representation of units.

Physical Properties of the Close-in Tertiary in the Southern Triple-lined System VZ Lib

VZ Lib is a southern triple-lined system. By analyzing all available times of light minima, orbital period changes are revisited in detail. We discovered that the observed–calculated (O − C) curve shows a long-term period decrease at a rate of dP/dt=−2.25×10{sup −7} days yr{sup −1}, revealing a mass transfer from the more massive component to the less massive one. A cyclic variation covering more than three cycles was discovered, which was analyzed for the light-travel-time effect via the presence of the tertiary companion. The cyclic variation has a short period of 2.96 (±0.04) yr and a small semiamplitude of 0.0039 (±0.0004) days. The mass of the third body was determined to be M{sub 3}sini{sub 3}=0.52(±0.07) M {sub ⊙} and an orbital semimajor axis shorter than 1.93(±0.31) au was obtained. Orbital properties of this close-in companion should provide valuable information on the formation of close binaries and stellar dynamical interaction. New complete BVR{sub c}I{sub c} light curves of VZ Lib were obtained and modeled with the Wilson–Devinney code. The light curves show a small but significant O’Connell effect that was not detectable in 1981 and 2007 but in 2004, so we derived a new photometric solution with assuming spot and a third light in the system. It is found that the light-curve subtype changed from A-type to W-type, which was possibly caused by a dark spot on the massive component. Our photometric solutions are in agreement with the spectroscopic results given by previous authors.

Ultraviolet observations of comets

The first observations of a comet in the vacuum ultraviolet were obtained on January 14, 1970, when OAO-2 recorded the spectrum of the bright comet Tago-Sato-Kosaka (1969g). The observations revealed, among other things, the predicted extensive hydrogen Lyman alpha halo. OAO-2 continued to collect spectrophotometric measurements of this comet throughout January of that year; a photograph of the nucleus in Lyman alpha revealed finer scale structures. In February of 1970, the bright comet Bennet (1969i) became favorable for space observations. On the basis of the OAO discovery, OGO-V made several measurements of comet Bennet with low spatial resolution photometers. Comet Enke was detected by OGO in January of 1971 at a large heliocentric distance from its Lyman alpha emission.

The Lick Observatory CCD data acquisition system

An evolving system for CCD data acquisition is described. The electronics are subdivided into those attached to the dewar, a 'smart' controller near the dewar, and a computer connected by serial link to the smart controller. Software for the smart controller is in assembler code, while the data acquisition and on-line analysis software is written in 'C' and uses the UNIX operating system.

First ultraviolet spectropolarimetry of hot supergiants

UV spectropolarimetric observations of the early-type supergiant stars P Cygni and Kappa Cassiopeiae obtained with the Wisconsin UV Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) are presented. Contrary to model predictions, the intrinsic polarization of P Cyg remains constant in the Balmer continuum except for a broad dip between 2600 and 3000 A. This decrease in polarization is discussed in terms of possible Fe line blanketing effects. The intrinsic position angle is essentially constant in the UV except for a rotation across the feature between 2600 and 3000 A. The intrinsic polarization of Kappa Cas is small; most of the observed polarization is interstellar in nature. The Serkowski curve extrapolated into the UV is found to fall consistently below the observed polarization. A slight rotation in position angle from optical to UV wavelengths is noted. Very good agreement is found between the mean continuum polarization obtained by WUPPE and the broadband UV polarization measurement obtained by Gehrels (1968).

The first spectropolarimetric study of the wavelength dependence of interstellar polarization in the ultraviolet

The first UV spectropolarimetry along six lines of sight with significant interstellar polarization is reported. The observations were obtained with the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) during the Astro-1 mission. HD 37903, HD 62542 and HD 99264 show a wavelength dependence which follows the Serkowski relation extrapolated into the UV. HD 25443 and Alpha Cam have UV polarization well in excess of the Serkowski extrapolation. HD 197770 clearly shows a polarization bump which closely matches the 2175 A extinction feature. This bump polarization can be fitted by small aligned graphite disks. The differences along various lines of sight might be the result of differences in the environments which affect the size and alignment of the grains.

Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography with High-Contrast Dielectrics

The Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography (ECVT) system has been designed to complement the tools created to sense the presence of water in nonconductive spacecraft materials, by helping to not only find the approximate location of moisture but also its quantity and depth. The ECVT system has been created for use with a new image reconstruction algorithm capable of imaging high-contrast dielectric distributions. Rather than relying solely on mutual capacitance readings as is done in traditional electrical capacitance tomography applications, this method reconstructs high-resolution images using only the self-capacitance measurements. The image reconstruction method assumes that the material under inspection consists of a binary dielectric distribution, with either a high relative dielectric value representing the water or a low dielectric value for the background material. By constraining the unknown dielectric material to one of two values, the inverse math problem that must be solved to generate the image is no longer ill-determined. The image resolution becomes limited only by the accuracy and resolution of the measurement circuitry. Images were reconstructed using this method with both synthetic and real data acquired using an aluminum structure inserted at different positions within the sensing region. The cuboid geometry of the system has two parallel planes of 16 conductors arranged in a 4 4 pattern. The electrode geometry consists of parallel planes of copper conductors, connected through custom-built switch electronics, to a commercially available capacitance to digital converter. The figure shows two 4 4 arrays of electrodes milled from square sections of copper-clad circuit-board material and mounted on two pieces of glass-filled plastic backing, which were cut to approximately square shapes, 10 cm on a side. Each electrode is placed on 2.0-cm centers. The parallel arrays were mounted with the electrode arrays approximately 3 cm apart. The open ends were surrounded by a metal guard to reduce the sensitivity of the electrodes to outside interference and to help maintain the spacing between the arrays. Other uses for this innovation potentially include quantifying the amount of commodity remaining in the fuel and oxidizer tanks while on-orbit without having to fire spacecraft engines. Another orbit application is moisture sensing in plant-growth experiments because microgravity causes moisture in soil to distribute itself in unusual ways. At the moment, the hardware and image reconstruction technique may only be of interest to people involved in nondestructive evaluation. The reconstructed image takes almost a full week to reproduce with existing computer power. However, because computer power and speeds follows Moore s Law, execution times are likely to become acceptable within the next five to eight years. The code was written in Mathematica for dedicated use with the ECVT system. In its present form, it is not suitable to be used directly as a consumer product. However, the code could be likely improved by rewriting it in a compiled language such as C or Fortran.

Site-level Foliar C, N, delta13C data from samples collected during field survey associated with NEON AOP survey, East River, CO 2018

Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) weight percent concentrations were obtained from the bulk foliar samples collected across East River, Washington Gulch, Slate River, and Coal Creek watersheds in Gunnison, Colorado during the summer of 2018. These samples were collected from sun-lit leaves of meadow, shrub, and tree vegetation types within 72 hours of the National Ecological Observatory Network Airborne Observation Platform (NEON AOP) hyperspectral survey. These samples were dried and then run on an elemental analyzer coupled to a mass spectrometer for C and N concentrations and delta13C. The intention of these data were to provide ground truth data to develop foliar nutrient models across the imaging spectroscopy domain. Additional associated site metadata and vegetation fractional cover information can be found in the associated data releases (DOI: 10.15485/1618130). Here we provide site level C, N, and delta 13C data in the CN_Results_Foliar.csv. All of these samples were also registered with IGSN codes, and the details from that registration with metadata for the samples is included in foliar_sample_igsn_metadata.csv.

Benchmarking Monte Carlo codes for the modelling of low-energy neutron production target reactions

The increasing adoption of accelerator-based neutron sources (ABNS) for applications including neutron capture therapy (NCT) research has highlighted the need for accurate simulation tools. Precise modelling of the neutron production target is crucial to ensure that simulated predictions of neutron beam characteristics used for subsequent beam shaping assembly design are reliable. This work presents a comprehensive benchmarking of four widely-used Monte Carlo codes - Geant4, PHITS, FLUKA (CERN), and MCNP - for modelling low-energy neutron production target reactions. Using their recommended physics models and cross-section libraries, we evaluate each code’s performance in simulating four beam-target reactions: 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be, 9 Be(p,n) 9 B, 9 Be(d,n) 10 B, and C(d,n)N. Predictions of neutron yield, angular distributions, and energy spectra are compared against available thick target experimental data. Results show varying levels of agreement between the codes depending on the reaction type, energy range, and beam characteristics. Geant4, MCNP and PHITS are the overall best performing codes for the simulation of total neutron yield and yield in the forward direction across most reactions. Across energies where experimental benchmarks exist, inter-code discrepancies in total and forward-directed yield are typically 10 to 30%, with larger deviations at near-threshold incident ion energies. PHITS provides the best overall reproduction of experimental spectra, particularly for the 9 Be(p,n) 9 B reaction. Additionally, PHITS demonstrates superior computational performance for most reactions. These findings provide valuable guidance for ABNS design, highlighting the strengths and limitations of each code for the simulation of low-energy neutron production reactions.
