Execute BEE workflows on private cloud infrastructure (STNS01-22 BEE - FY21 P6-2)

Scope and objectives: BEE provides a portable, modular, HPC-focused workflow engine capable of managing containerized applications at scale. In FY21 BEE will expand its capabilities to provide more sophisticated handling of workflows. The ability to archive, clone, and re-run workflows will be added to BEE. The kinds of resources that BEE can use to execute workflow tasks will be expanded to include public and private clouds, such as Google Cloud Platform and OpenStack.

Execute BEE workflows on private cloud infrastructure-2.3.6.01 - LANL ATDM ST / STNS01-22 Milestone Completion Documentation (BEE-FY21 P6-2) [Slides]

This work involves the creation of the Cloud Launcher, a new subcomponent of BEE, and the extension of the BEETaskManager to run on Cloud systems. BEE will be able to interact with the Google Compute Engine and OpenStack cloud APIs to set up simple Cloud clusters for launching HPC job scripts. BEE will use existing functionality to launch jobs that previously could only be launched on HPC systems. The BEETaskManager will handle launching tasks on the Cloud cluster.

Integration of Next Generation Critical Infrastructure Sensor Technologies

This project is focused on advancing current protective relaying and control through verifying next generation timing systems and sensors with current commercial off the shelf protective relays. This will further research in the field of advanced grid modernization and demonstrate interoperability between nextgeneration protective relays and voltage and current sensors. These commercial off the shelf (COTS) technologies were tested and integrated with next generation sensor technologies, with the results documented below.

Potential Infrastructure Cost Savings at Hybrid Wind Plus Solar PV Plants

This report documents the creation of NREL's Balance of System model for Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HybridBOSSE). Balance of System (BOS) costs account for approximately 30% of the capital expenditure required to install a land-based wind plant, and as much as 40% of the cost of installing a solar PV plant. Hybrid Renewable Energy systems present an opportunity to combine balance of system components to achieve cost savings, and HybridBOSSE aims to provide a component-level model to determine the associated BOS costs in a hybrid renewable energy system. Prior BOS models for hybrid systems (at NREL and elsewhere) have relied on empirical curve fits of legacy industry data, limiting their utility and their predictive ability for new technology combinations and configurations, such as those found in Hybrid Plants. Hybrid plants at the utility scale have considerably more interest in the last number of years, with ever-growing capacities in the interconnection queues, and many large developers pivoting to only consider hybrid plants going forward. As these plants become a commercial reality, the need for a detailed analysis of costs in a hybrid plant to fully exploit the available cost savings grows. The tool developed and documented in this work, HybridBOSSE, provides an open-source, python-based method of assessing the costs in hybrid plants. This analysis capability unlocks greater certainty in hybrid plant costs, as well as the ability to examine scenarios of hybridization and glean combinations that offer the greatest flexibility and cost reduction.

Grid-Scale, Long-Term Energy Storage: Repurposing Hydrocarbon Reservoirs, Resources, and Infrastructure to Store CO 2 and Heat (Mid-Project Progress Report)

The purpose of this project is to create a viable business case for CO 2 capture, use, and storage (CCUS) by enabling grid-scale, long-term energy storage in mature hydrocarbon reservoirs and saline aquifers. Our CCUS approach, called the Earth Battery, is based on patents issued to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Multi-Fluid Geo-Energy and Earth Battery Systems and to the University of Minnesota and TerraCOH, Inc. on CO 2 Plume Geothermal (CPG). Excess energy can be used to compress and store CO 2 and hot brine underground in permeable formations, including: (1) saline aquifers suitable for geologic CO 2 storage (GCS) and (2) hydrocarbon reservoirs, the focus of this project featuring a pilot test in a mature oil and natural gas (NG) field. Excess energy can come in the form of excess electricity from the grid or excess NG that does not have a market. It can also come in the form of excess heat from other sources, such as from the heat of air or CO 2 compression or from a nearby base-load power plant or solar thermal energy (STE) facility, when heat is not needed to generate electricity from those sources.

Considerations for Department of Defense Implementation of Zero-Emission Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure

This guide provides a roadmap to comply with Executive Order (EO) 14057 requirements and transition to a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) fleet efficiently and quickly. EO 14057 on Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability requires the Department of Defense (DoD) to transition its non-tactical vehicles to a 100% ZEV fleet, including 100% of light-duty acquisitions by 2027 and 100% of medium- and heavy-duty acquisitions by 2035. The report covers planning for ZEVs and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in designing EVSE, and execution issues including acquisition, installation, and ongoing fleet management.

Collaborative Computing Support for Analysis Facilities Exploiting Software as Infrastructure Techniques

Prior to the public release of Kubernetes it was difficult to conduct joint development of elaborate analysis facilities due to the highly non-homogeneous nature of hardware and network topology across compute facilities. However, since the advent of systems like Kubernetes and OpenShift, which provide declarative interfaces for building fault-tolerant and self-healing deployments of networked software, it is possible for multiple institutes to collaborate more effectively since resource details are abstracted away through various forms of hardware and software virtualization. In this whitepaper we will outline the development of two analysis facilities: "Coffea-casa" at University of Nebraska Lincoln and the "Elastic Analysis Facility" at Fermilab, and how utilizing platform abstraction has improved the development of common software for each of these facilities, and future development plans made possible by this methodology.
