Bioorganic chemistry and the emergence of the first cell

It is suggested that the best way to study the evolution of cells from primordial compounds is to attempt to assemble a protocell, i.e., a primordial cell. Simulation of processes that occurred in archaic times would require inductive reasoning and constructionist techniques rather than the analytic approach in which cell components are separated and studied in isolation. Advantages to primordial life which would result from protocell formation are surveyed, and the proteinoid microsphere, a model of the protocell, is discussed. A photoreactive proteinoid is considered.

Analysis of UV protection requirements and testing of candidate attenuators for the Haloe optical instrument

Results of calculations are presented which simulate photolytic processes occurring in HALOE gas calibration cells exposed to extra-terrestrial solar ultraviolet photons. These calculations indicate that significant photolysis takes place in two of the sapphire-enclosed cells over the exposure periods of the proposed mission. A subsequent laboratory investigation is also described in which a high-voltage discharge hydrogen light source is used in conjunction with a vacuum ultraviolet spectrograph. The UV emission from this lamp was used to expose two candidate UV attenuators (ZnSe and coated Ge) to ascertain their suitability as UV filters while maintaining original infrared optical properties. Both materials were found to be effectively opaque to vacuum UV radiaton and suffered no adverse effects regarding their infrared transmissivity.

Noise equivalent circuit of a semiconductor laser diode

A small-signal model of a semiconductor laser is extended to include the effects of intrinsic noise by adding current and voltage noise sources. The current noise source represents the shot noise of carrier recombination, while the voltage noise source represents the random process of simulated emission. The usefulness of the noise equivalent circuit is demonstrated by calculating the modulation and noise characteristics of a current-driven diode as a function of bias current and frequency.

Accuracy and resolution of Earth Radiation Budget Estimates

A numerical filter inversion technique that reduces wide-angle satellite measurements to top-of-the-atmosphere radiant exitances has been proposed for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). The matrix formulation of this technique is presented, and the design of the numerical filter is discussed. The filter is smoothed with a singular value decomposition. The inversion process is simulated by generating synthetic measurements from a 24 degree spherical harmonic radiation field derived from Nimbus 6 ERB data. The numerical filter is applied to these measurements after they are corrupted with instrument error. The results are curves of expected error versus resolution area.

Velocities of windblown particles in saltation: Venus, Earth, and Mars

Particle velocities were determined in environmental wind tunnels capable of simulating aeolian processes on Earth, Mars, and Venus. Comparisons of results for Earth, Mars, and Venus reveal some remarkable differences. Most particles achieve speeds nearly equal to freestream wind speed on Venus, but seldom achieve half the wind speed on Mars; Earth cases are of intermediate values. This is attributed to the differences in atmospheric density and to the threshold wind speeds among the three planetary environments. Particles are more easily moved in the dense venusian atmosphere than on Mars; consequently, threshold speeds are very low, and for the range of wind speeds in which most movement is presumed to occur (just above threshold speeds), the grains need not be moving very fast to achieve 100% of the wind speed. Conversely, particles on Mars must accelerate very rapidly to achieve the speed of the high winds required for threshold, and despite the fact that saltation path lengths are long on Mars, most grains fall to the surface before achieving even 50 to 60% of freestream wind speed.

Hydrodynamic stability problem formulated by numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

The problem of hydrodynamic stability and the transition from laminar to turbulent flows are reformulated by seeking numerical solutions of the full, unapproximated Navier-Stokes equations. This method differs significantly from the well known Orr-Sommerfeld equation approach. The oncoming laminar flow is disturbed by forced, time dependent perturbations. The magnitudes of these perturbations are arbitrary. Then, the ensuing spatial and temporal development of the imposed perturbations on the basic flow is calculated by direct numerical solutions of the time dependent Navier-Stokes equations. One of the main advantages of this method is its ability to simulate nonlinear processes. As a specific application of this technique to SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) flow configurations, computer programs have been written for the two dimensional flow over a backward facing step. This numerical code will be tested for operational use as part of a continued research collaboration effort with the NASA/MSFC counterparts.

A SLAM II simulation model for analyzing space station mission processing requirements

Space station mission processing is modeled via the SLAM 2 simulation language on an IBM 4381 mainframe and an IBM PC microcomputer with 620K RAM, two double-sided disk drives and an 8087 coprocessor chip. Using a time phased mission (payload) schedule and parameters associated with the mission, orbiter (space shuttle) and ground facility databases, estimates for ground facility utilization are computed. Simulation output associated with the science and applications database is used to assess alternative mission schedules.

Geologic analysis of averaged magnetic satellite anomalies

To investigate relative advantages and limitations for quantitative geologic analysis of magnetic satellite scalar anomalies derived from arithmetic averaging of orbital profiles within equal-angle or equal-area parallelograms, the anomaly averaging process was simulated by orbital profiles computed from spherical-earth crustal magnetic anomaly modeling experiments using Gauss-Legendre quadrature integration. The results indicate that averaging can provide reasonable values at satellite elevations, where contributing error factors within a given parallelogram include the elevation distribution of the data, and orbital noise and geomagnetic field attributes. Various inversion schemes including the use of equivalent point dipoles are also investigated as an alternative to arithmetic averaging. Although inversion can provide improved spherical grid anomaly estimates, these procedures are problematic in practice where computer scaling difficulties frequently arise due to a combination of factors including large source-to-observation distances ( 400 km), high geographic latitudes, and low geomagnetic field inclinations.

An impact-induced terrestrial atmosphere and iron-water reactions during accretion of the Earth

Shock wave data and theoretical calculations were used to derive models of an impact-generated terrestrial atmosphere during accretion of the Earth. The models showed that impacts of infalling planetesimals not only provided the entire budget of terrestrial water but also led to a continuous depletion of near-surface layers of water-bearing minerals of their structural water. This resulted in a final atmospheric water reservoir comparable to the present day total water budget of the Earth. The interaction of metallic iron with free water at the surface of the accreting Earth is considered. We carried out model calcualtions simulating these processes during accretion. It is assumed that these processes are the prime source of the terrestrial FeO component of silicates and oxides. It is demonstrated that the iron-water reaction would result in the absence of atmospheric/hydrospheric water, if homogeneous accretion is assumed. In order to obtain the necessary amount of terrestrial water, slightly heterogeneous accretion with initially 36 wt% iron planetesimals, as compared with a homogeneous value of 34 wt% is required.

An automated methodology development

The design methodology employed in testing the applicability of Ada in large-scale combat simulations is described. Ada was considered as a substitute for FORTRAN to lower life cycle costs and ease the program development efforts. An object-oriented approach was taken, which featured definitions of military targets, the capability of manipulating their condition in real-time, and one-to-one correlation between the object states and real world states. The simulation design process was automated by the problem statement language (PSL)/problem statement analyzer (PSA). The PSL/PSA system accessed the problem data base directly to enhance the code efficiency by, e.g., eliminating non-used subroutines, and provided for automated report generation, besides allowing for functional and interface descriptions. The ways in which the methodology satisfied the responsiveness, reliability, transportability, modifiability, timeliness and efficiency goals are discussed.

A system for conducting igneous petrology experiments under controlled redox conditions in reduced gravity

The Space Shuttle and the planned Space Station will permit experimentation under conditions of reduced gravitational acceleration offering experimental petrologists the opportunity to study crystal growth, element distribution, and phase chemistry. In particular the confounding effects of macro and micro scale buoyancy-induced convection and crystal settling or floatation can be greatly reduced over those observed in experiments in the terrestrial laboratory. Also, for experiments in which detailed replication of the environment is important, the access to reduced gravity will permit a more complete simulation of processes that may have occurred on asteroids or in free space. A technique that was developed to control, measure, and manipulate oxygen fugacites with small quantities of gas which are recirculated over the sample is described. This system should be adaptable to reduced gravity space experiments requiring redox control. Experiments done conventionally and those done using this technique yield identical results done in a 1-g field.

Properties of filamentary sublimation residues from dispersions of clay in ice

Results are reported from experimental studies of the formation of ice mixed with mineral particles in an effort to simulate similar processes on natural surfaces such as at the Martian poles, on comet nuclei and on icy satellites. The study consisted of low-pressure, low-temperature sublimations of water ice from dilutions of water-clay (montmorillonite and Cabosil) dispersions of various component ratios. Liquid dispersions were sprayed into liquid nitrogen to form droplets at about -50 C. Both clay-water dispersions left a filamentary residue on the bottom of the Dewar after the water ice had sublimated off. The residue was studied with optical and SEM microscopy, the latter method revealing a high electrical conductivity in the residue. The results suggest that the sublimation of the water ice can leave a surface crust, which may be analogous to processes at the Martian poles and on comet nuclei. The process could proceed by the attachment of water molecules to salt crystals during the hottest part of the Martian year. The residue remaining was found to remain stable up to 370 C, be porous, and remain resilient, which could allow it to insulate ice bodies such as comets in space.

A kinetic model for the thermal nitridation of SiO2/Si

To explain the observed nitrogen distributions in thermally nitridated SiO2 films, a kinetic model is proposed in which the nitridation process is simulated, using the first-order chemical kinetics and Arrhenius dependence of the diffusion and reaction rates on temperature. The calculations show that initially, as the substrate reacts with diffusing nitrogen, a nitrogen-rich oxynitride forms at the SiO2-Si interface, while at nitridation temperatures above 1000 C, an oxygen-rich oxynitride subsequently forms at the interface, due to reaction of the substrate with an increasingly concentrated oxygen displaced by the slower nitridation of the SiO2. This sequence of events results in a nitrogen distribution in which the peak of the interfacial nitrogen concentration occurs away from the interface. The results are compared with the observed nitrogen distribution. The calculated results have correctly predicted the positions of the interfacial nitrogen peaks at the temperatures of 800, 1000, and 1150 C. To account for the observed width of the interfacial nitrogen distribution, it was found necessary to include in the simulations the effect of interfacial strain.

A viscous-inviscid interaction method for ejectors having two primary jets

A viscous-inviscid interaction methodology is developed for evaluating the performance of two-dimensional incompressible flow ejectors that utilize two primary jets. In this method, the inviscid portion of the flow field, which contains the ambient fluid drawn into the device, is modeled using a higher-order panel method. The viscous region, which contains the turbulent jets, is described by an integral method. The viscous and inviscid solutions are matched together in an iterative process that simulates the interaction between the jets and the ambient fluid. The model is applied to a variety of parametric and optimization studies that illustrate the connection between the details of the ejector geometry and the level of thrust augmentation. The advantages of a dual-jet configuration are assessed through comparison with similar calculations for an otherwise identical single-jet ejector.

A model-free method for mass spectrometer response correction

A new method for correction of mass spectrometer output signals is described. Response-time distortion is reduced independently of any model of mass spectrometer behavior. The delay of the system is found first from the cross-correlation function of a step change and its response. A two-sided time-domain digital correction filter (deconvolution filter) is generated next from the same step response data using a regression procedure. Other data are corrected using the filter and delay. The mean squared error between a step response and a step is reduced considerably more after the use of a deconvolution filter than after the application of a second-order model correction. O2 consumption and CO2 production values calculated from data corrupted by a simulated dynamic process return to near the uncorrupted values after correction. Although a clean step response or the ensemble average of several responses contaminated with noise is needed for the generation of the filter, random noise of magnitude not above 0.5 percent added to the response to be corrected does not impair the correction severely.

Research in materials processing using a low gravity simulation aircraft

The feasibility of performing materials experiments aboard the NASA KC-135 low gravity simulation aircraft is demonstrated. The vehicle serves as a research platform which flies parabolic maneuvers. Experiments which have been conducted on board the aircraft are outlined and particular attention is given to tests utilizing optical measurement techniques such as interferometry, schlieren, and holography. It is noted that the KC-135 can be used for crew training, flight hardware checkout, conceptual development, self-sufficient experiments, and research in support of and leading to space flight experiments.

Simulation models of early visual processes

Several areas of early visual processes are studied using computer models. These models include retinal cone placement, cone color arrangement, development of geniculate receptive fields, cortical simple cells, and motion field extraction. The receptive field of a model cortical unit is indicated schematically.
