Tunable, Homoepitaxial Hyperbolic Metamaterials Enabled by High Mobility CdO

We report propagating light exhibits hyperbolicity in strongly anisotropic materials where the principal components of the dielectric tensor are opposite in sign. While hyperbolicity occurs naturally in anisotropic polar dielectrics, wherein optical phonons along orthogonal crystal axes are nondegenerate, such optical anisotropy can also be engineered in hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs): thin film superlattices of alternating dielectric and metallic layers. Contrasted with the severely limited tunability of natural hyperbolic materials, the hyperbolic behavior of HMMs can be tailored significantly both through superlattice design and material selection. However, so far HMMs have suffered from high optical losses, hindering their performance. In this report, broadly tunable (λ = 2–5 µm) Type I and II hyperbolic modes with low losses (quality (Q)-factors up to 19.7) are observed through attenuated total reflectance measurements of monolithic, homoepitaxial superlattices of high- and low-doped cadmium oxide (CdO). Further, the low losses offered by CdO enable the first demonstration of real-space imaging of hyperbolic plasmon polaritons in nanoresonators by scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy—previously only possible for hyperbolic phonon polariton materials. Tunable, low-loss CdO HMMs promise designability for applications such as on-chip photonics, super-resolution imaging (hyperlensing), enhanced emission, novel emitter designs, and possibly quantum nanophotonic and time variant metasurfaces.

Photon noise correlations in millimeter-wave telescopes

Many modern millimeter and submillimeter (“mm-wave”) telescopes for astronomy are deploying more detectors by increasing the detector pixel density and, with the rise of lithographed detector architectures and high-throughput readout techniques, it is becoming increasingly practical to overfill the focal plane. However, when the pixel pitch p pix is small compared to the product of the wavelength λ and the focal ratio F , or p pix ≲1.2 F λ , the Bose term of the photon noise correlates between neighboring detector pixels due to the Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) effect. When this HBT effect is non-negligible, the array-averaged sensitivity scales with the detector count N det less favorably than the uncorrelated limit of N det −1/2 . In this paper, we present a general prescription to calculate this HBT correlation based on a quantum optics formalism and extend it to polarization-sensitive detectors. We then estimate the impact of HBT correlations on the sensitivity of a model mm-wave telescope and discuss the implications for a focal plane design.

Dark moments for the Standard Model?

If dark matter (DM) interacts with the Standard Model (SM) via the kinetic mixing (KM) portal, it necessitates the existence of portal matter (PM) particles which carry both dark and SM quantum numbers that will appear in vacuum polarization-like loop graphs. In addition to the familiar ~ eϵQ strength, QED-like interaction for the dark photon (DP), in some setups different loop graphs of these PM states can also induce other coupling structures for the SM fermions that may come to dominate in at least some regions of parameter space regions and which can take the form of ‘dark’ moments, e.g., magnetic dipole-type interactions in the IR, associated with a large mass scale, Λ. In this paper, motivated by a simple toy model, we perform a phenomenological investigation of a possible loop-induced dark magnetic dipole moment for SM fermions, in particular, for the electron. We show that at the phenomenological level such a scenario can not only be made compatible with existing experimental constraints for a significant range of correlated values for Λ and the dark U(1) D gauge coupling, g D , but can also lead to quantitatively different signatures once the DP is discovered. In this setup, assuming complex scalar DM to satisfy CMB constraints, parameter space regions where the DP decays invisibly are found to be somewhat preferred if PM mass limits from direct searches at the LHC and our toy model setup are all taken seriously. High precision searches for, or measurements of, the e + e - → γ + DP process at Belle II are shown to provide some of the strongest future constraints on this scenario.

Spatial and temporal control of lysis by the lambda holin

The infection cycle of phage λ terminates in lysis mediated by three types of lysis proteins, each disrupting a layer in the bacterial envelope: the S105 holin, the R endolysin, and the Rz/Rz1 spanin complex targeting the inner membrane, cell wall or peptidoglycan, and the outer membrane, respectively. Video microscopy has shown that in most infections, lysis occurs as a sudden, explosive event at a cell pole, such that the initial product is a less refractile ghost that retains rod-shaped morphology. Here, we investigate the molecular basis of polar lysis using time-lapse fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate that the holin determines the morphology of lysis by suddenly forming two-dimensional rafts at the poles about 100 s prior to lysis. Given the physiological and biochemical similarities between the lambda holin and other class I holins, dynamic redistribution and sudden concentration may be common features of holins, probably reflecting the fitness advantage of all-or-nothing lysis regulation

Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Diode Lasers with λ near 2 µm

Epitaxially regrown electrically pumped photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs) operating near 2 µm were designed and fabricated within a III-V-Sb material system. A high-index-contrast photonic crystal layer was incorporated into the laser heterostructures by air-pocket-retaining epitaxial regrowth. Transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed uniform and continuous AlGaAsSb initial growth over the nano-patterned GaSb surface, followed by the development of the air-pockets. The PCSEL threshold current density had a minimal value of ~170 A/cm 2 in the 160–180 K temperature range when the QW gain spectrum aligned with the Γ 2 band edge of the photonic crystal. The devices operated in a continuous wave regime at 160 K. The divergence and polarization of the multimode laser beam emitted from the 200 µm × 200 µm PCSEL aperture were controlled by filamentation.

Measurement of the CMB temperature power spectrum and constraints on cosmology from the SPT-3G 2018 T T , T E , and E E dataset

We present a sample-variance-limited measurement of the temperature power spectrum ( T T ) of the cosmic microwave background using observations of a ∼ 1500 deg 2 field made by the SPT-3G in 2018. We report multifrequency power spectrum measurements at 95, 150, and 220 GHz covering the angular multipole range 750 ≤ ℓ < 3000 . We combine this T T measurement with the published polarization power spectrum measurements from the 2018 observing season and update their associated covariance matrix to complete the SPT-3G 2018 T T / T E / E E dataset. This is the first analysis to present cosmological constraints from SPT T T , T E , and E E power spectrum measurements jointly. We blind the cosmological results and subject the dataset to a series of consistency tests at the power spectrum and parameter level. We find excellent agreement between frequencies and spectrum types and our results are robust to the modeling of astrophysical foregrounds. We report results for Λ CDM and a series of extensions, drawing on the following parameters: the amplitude of the gravitational lensing effect on primary power spectra A L , the effective number of neutrino species N eff , the primordial helium abundance Y P , and the baryon clumping factor due to primordial magnetic fields b . We find that the SPT-3G 2018 T T / T E / E E data are well fit by Λ CDM with a probability to exceed of 15%. For Λ CDM , we constrain the expansion rate today to H 0 = 68.3 ± 1.5 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 and the combined structure growth parameter to S 8 = 0.797 ± 0.042 . The SPT-based results are effectively independent of Planck, and the cosmological parameter constraints from either dataset are within < 1 σ of each other. The addition of temperature data to the SPT-3G T E / E E power spectra improves constraints by 8–27% for each of the Λ CDM cosmological parameters. When additionally fitting A L , N eff , or N eff + Y P , the posteriors of these parameters tighten by 5–24%. In the case of primordial magnetic fields, complete T T / T E / E E power spectrum measurements are necessary to break the degeneracy between b and n s , the spectral index of primordial density perturbations. We report a 95% confidence upper limit from SPT-3G data of b < 1.0 . The cosmological constraints in this work are the tightest from SPT primary power spectrum measurements to date and the analysis forms a new framework for future SPT analyses.

SPT-3G D1: CMB temperature and polarization power spectra and cosmology from 2019 and 2020 observations of the SPT-3G main field

Here, we present measurements of the temperature and E-mode polarization angular power spectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from observations of 4% of the sky with SPT-3G, the current camera on the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The maps used in this analysis are the deepest used in a CMB TT / TE / EE analysis to date. The maps and resulting power spectra have been validated through blind and unblind tests. The measurements of the lensed EE and TE spectra are the most precise to date at ℓ = 1800 – 4000 and ℓ = 2200 – 4000 , respectively. Combining our TT / TE / EE spectra with previously published SPT-3G CMB lensing results, we find parameters for the standard Λ cold dark matter ( Λ CDM ) model consistent with Planck and ACT DR6 with comparable constraining power. We report a Hubble constant of H 0 = 66.66 ± 0.60 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 from SPT-3G alone, 6.2 σ away from local measurements from SH0ES. For the first time, combined ground-based ( SPT + ACT ) CMB primary and lensing data have reached Planck’s constraining power on some parameters, a milestone for CMB cosmology. The combination of these three CMB experiments yields the tightest CMB constraints to date, with H 0 = 67.19 ± 0.38 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 , and the amplitude of clustering σ 8 = 0.8137 ± 0.0037 . CMB data alone show no evidence for physics beyond Λ CDM , however, we observe a 2.8 σ difference in Λ CDM between CMB and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) results from DESI-DR2, which is relaxed in extended models. The combination of CMB and BAO yields 2 − 3 σ shifts from Λ CDM in the curvature of the Universe, the amplitude of CMB lensing, or the dark energy equation of state. It also drives mild preferences for models that address the Hubble tension through modified recombination or variations in the electron mass in a nonflat Universe. This work highlights the growing power of ground-based CMB experiments and lays a foundation for further cosmological analyses with SPT-3G.

Pathways to excitation of atoms with bicircular laser pulses

We study the excitation of the hydrogen atom by bichromatic circularly polarized laser pulses using numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The results are in agreement with the selection rules for multiphoton processes in such fields, namely, excited states are populated in which orbital angular momentum and magnetic quantum numbers are either both odd or both even, independent of the relative helicity, peak intensity, and pulse duration of the pulses. For co-rotating pulses the results show that excitation predominantly proceeds to states with magnetic quantum number of the same helicity as the laser pulses. Besides pathways via direct photon absorption from the ground state our results indicate that a transfer of population among the Rydberg states occurs via Λ-type transitions. In the case of counter-rotating pulses the largest excitation probability is found for Rydberg states that differ in magnetic quantum number by Δm=±3. This pattern allows us to estimate how many photons from each of the two bichromatic fields have been absorbed. Finally, we confirm that a population in Rydberg states beyond a maximum orbital angular quantum number is unlikely.

Polarised luminescence of bismuth active centres in germanosilicate glasses

We have studied polarised luminescence of bismuth active centres in germanosilicate glasses. The 1.4-μm luminescence components with orthogonal polarisation states under excitation with linearly polarised light at λ = 1.26 μm have been shown to differ in intensity. The degree of polarisation reaches ∼0.12. Increasing the concentration of bismuth active centres leads to a decrease in the degree of polarisation of luminescence in the range studied. Measurements of the E-mode polarization and temperature-E-mode correlation of the CMB from SPT-3G 2018 data

We present measurements of the E -mode ( E E ) polarization power spectrum and temperature- E -mode ( T E ) cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background using data collected by SPT-3G, the latest instrument installed on the South Pole Telescope. This analysis uses observations of a 1500 deg 2 region at 95, 150, and 220 GHz taken over a four-month period in 2018. We report binned values of the E E and T E power spectra over the angular multipole range 300 ≤ ℓ < 3000 , using the multifrequency data to construct six semi-independent estimates of each power spectrum and their minimum-variance combination. These measurements improve upon the previous results of SPTpol across the multipole ranges 300 ≤ ℓ ≤ 1400 for E E and 300 ≤ ℓ ≤ 1700 for T E , resulting in constraints on cosmological parameters comparable to those from other current leading ground-based experiments. We find that the SPT-3G data set is well fit by a Λ CDM cosmological model with parameter constraints consistent with those from Planck and SPTpol data. From SPT-3G data alone, we find H 0 = 68.8 ± 1.5 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 and σ 8 = 0.789 ± 0.016 , with a gravitational lensing amplitude consistent with the Λ CDM prediction ( A L = 0.98 ± 0.12 ). We combine the SPT-3G and the Planck data sets and obtain joint constraints on the Λ CDM model. The volume of the 68% confidence region in six-dimensional Λ CDM parameter space is reduced by a factor of 1.5 compared to Planck-only constraints, with no significant shifts in central values. We note that the results presented here are obtained from data collected during just half of a typical observing season with only part of the focal plane operable, and that the active detector count has since nearly doubled for observations made with SPT-3G after 2018.

Delta/Lambda Chirality: From Enantiomers to Diastereomers in Heterometallic Complexes with Chelating Ligands

The Δ/Λ chirality observed in octahedral molecules with chelating ligands represents the major group of “chiral-at-metal” complexes. Upon shifting from mononuclear to polynuclear systems with multiple (≥2) chiral centers, not only enantiomers but also diastereomers should be considered. We present the first, to the best of our knowledge, diastereomeric pairs Δ,Δ,Δ/Λ,Λ,Λ (1) and Δ,Δ,Λ/ Λ,Λ,Δ (2) of the pentanuclear assembly [Mn II (ptac) 3 −Na- Co III (acac) 3 −Na-Mn II (ptac) 3 ] (ptac = 1,1,1-trifluoro-5,5-dimethyl- 2,4-hexanedionate; acac = acetylacetonate). Diastereomers 1 and 2 were isolated in pure form and found to exhibit distinctly different structural characteristics. Importantly, for compounds that are applied as single-source precursors for the quaternary oxide cathode material P2−Na 0.67 Mn 0.67 Co 0.33 O 2 , the diastereomers revealed different thermal behaviors in terms of volatility and thermal stability. Unambiguous assignment of the Mn and Co positions in both diastereomers has been confirmed by the synchrotron X-ray resonant diffraction technique. Oxidation states of metal ions have been verified by the synchrotron X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The diastereomerization between 1 and 2 is not taking place in the solid state (crystal-to-crystal), as well as in the gas phase. The transformation between two diastereomers was observed in the solutions of noncoordinating solvents and was related to the polarities of the solvents and diastereomeric molecules.

Measurement of the ${\Lambda}_b^0$→ J/ψΛ angular distribution and the ${\Lambda}_b^0$ polarisation in pp collisions

This paper presents an analysis of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → J/ψ Λ angular distribution and the transverse production polarisation of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The measurements are performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb – 1 , collected with the LHCb experiment. The polarisation is determined in a fiducial region of \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of 1 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 < η < 5, respectively. The data are consistent with \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) baryons being produced unpolarised in this region. The parity-violating asymmetry parameter of the Λ → pπ – decay is also determined from the data and its value is found to be consistent with a recent measurement by the BES III collaboration.

Design of InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 quantum wells for high-efficiency amber light emitting diodes

A novel type-II InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 quantum well (QW) structure is proposed based on recent experimental achievements for the successful epitaxy of ZnSnN 2 -GaN alloys and the determination of their band offsets with GaN. The simulation results indicate that this structure is promising as the active region for high-efficiency InGaN-based amber (λ ~ 590 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The hole wavefunction in the valence band is better confined with the insertion of a monolayer scale of ZnSnGa 2 N 4 into the InGaN QW while the electron wavefunction in the conduction band is better confined with the incorporation of an AlGaN layer in the GaN quantum barrier. The band structure of the InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 QW is numerically simulated based on the experimentally measured band offsets between ZnSnGa 2 N 4 and GaN. With the InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 QW design, a low In content (20%) is required in the InGaN layer to reach a peak emission wavelength of ~590 nm, yet an In composition of 25% is needed to reach the same emission wavelength for a conventional InGaN QW with the same layer thicknesses. Moreover, the electron-hole wavefunction overlap (Гe1-hh1) for the InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 QW design reaches 18% for an emission wavelength at ~590 nm. This result is much improved over the conventional InGaN QW overlap of 5% emitting at the same wavelength. The increase in electron-hole wavefunction overlap results in an approximately 14 times enhancement in the predicted spontaneous emission radiative recombination rate of the InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 QW as compared to that of the conventional InGaN QW. This InGaN-ZnSnGa 2 N 4 QW structure design can be promising to pave a new way to achieve high efficiency amber LEDs.
