Recent studies involving measurements of weak C02 bands in the near-infrared were undertaken primarily to provide improved absorption parameters to model the night-side emission spectrum of Venus.
Abstract We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B ¯ 0 →D (*)+ K − $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ K S ∗ 0 ,B − →D (*)0 K − $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ K S ∗ 0 decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 362 fb −1 . The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observedBmeson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function ofm(K − $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ K S ∗ 0 ) andm(D (*) $$ {K}_{(S)}^{\left(\ast \right)0} $$ K S ∗ 0 ) in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. We also present measurements of the branching fractions of four$$ {\overline{B}}^0 $$ B ¯ 0 →D (*)+ $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ D s − ,B − →D (*)0 $$ {D}_s^{-} $$ D s − decay channels with a precision compatible to the current world averages.
The N(2) Carroll-Yoshino (CY) c'(4) X (0,0) and (0,1) Rydberg bands between 95 and 99 nm were reported to be the most prominent EUV emission features in Voyager 1 ultraviolet spectrometer (UVS) airglow spectra from Titan's atmosphere. Although c'(4) is strongly excited by photoelectron impact, the (0,0) band is optically thick near peak production, so a multiple-scattering model is employed to calculate (0,v) nadir-viewing intensities. The model accounts for all known loss processes and quantifies the redistribution of photons to (0,v is greater than 0). Results show 7.6 R of (0,1) intensity, in agreement with reported observations (5-10 R), and 0.2 R of (0,0), in spectacular disagreement with reported observations (6-10 R). Nadir-viewing intensities of all other expected NI multiplets and N2 bands in the brightest portion of the EUV airglow spectrum (92.0-101.5 nm) are also calculated using photodissociative ionization of N(2) and photoelectron impact on N(2). It is found that NI multiplets and N(2) bands near (0,0) and unresolved by the UVS combine to produce 8.3 R, consistent with that reported for (0,0) and indicating that it was misidentified in previous analyses. The Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) on Cassini should unambiguously distinguish any (0,0) intensity from the brightest features nearby.
We study the effect of the cosmological constant Lambda on galaxy formation using a simple spherical top-hat overdensity model. We consider models with Omega(sub 0) = 0.2, lambda(sub 0) = 0, and Omega(sub 0) = 0.2, lambda(sub 0) = 0.8 (where Omega(sub 0) is the density parameter, and lambda(sub 0) identically equal Lambda/3 H(sub 0 exp 2) where H(sub 0) is the Hubble constant). We adjust the initial power spectrum amplitude so that both models reproduce the same large-scale structures. The galaxy formation era in the lambda(sub 0) = 0 model occurs early (z approximately 6) and is very short, whereas in the lambda(sub 0) = 0.8 model the galaxy formation era starts later (z approximately 4), and last much longer, possibly all the way to the present. Consequently, galaxies at low redshift (z less than 1) are significantly more evolved in the lambda(sub 0) = 0 model than in the lambda(sub 0) = 0.8 model. This result implies that previous attempts to determine Lambda using the number counts versus redshift test are probably unreliable.
The J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world’s largest J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ 0 → Λ γ and Σ ¯ 0 → Λ ¯ γ , α Σ 0 = − 0.0017 ± 0.0021 ± 0.0018 and α ¯ Σ 0 = 0.0021 ± 0.0020 ± 0.0022 , are measured for the first time. The strong C P symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ 0 hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A C P Σ = α Σ 0 + α ¯ Σ 0 = ( 0.4 ± 2.9 ± 1.3 ) × 10 − 3 . The weak C P test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ ¯ . Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ 0 hyperons in J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S -wave and D -wave contributions of the J / ψ , ψ ( 3686 ) → Σ 0 Σ ¯ 0 decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ 0 − Σ ¯ 0 pairs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
By analyzing ( 27.12 ± 0.14 ) × 10 8 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the decays χ c J → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) are observed for the first time with statistical significances greater than 10 σ . The branching fractions of these decays are determined to be B ( χ c 0 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 2.61 ± 0.27 ± 0.32 ) × 10 − 5 , B ( χ c 1 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.16 ± 0.24 ± 0.46 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( χ c 2 → p p ¯ K S 0 K − π + + c . c . ) = ( 5.63 ± 0.28 ± 0.46 ) × 10 − 5 , respectively. The processes χ c 1 , 2 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . are also observed, with statistical significances of 5.7 σ and 7.0 σ , respectively. Evidence for χ c 0 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . is found with statistical significances of 3.3 σ . The corresponding branching fractions are determined to be B ( χ c 0 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 1.6 1 − 0.64 + 0.68 ± 0.23 ) × 10 − 5 , B ( χ c 1 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.06 − 0.76 + 0.80 ± 0.52 ) × 10 − 5 , and B ( χ c 2 → p ¯ Λ ( 1520 ) K S 0 π + + c . c . ) = ( 4.0 9 − 0.84 + 0.87 ± 0.42 ) × 10 − 5 . Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
Based on ( 10.09 ± 0.04 ) × 10 9 J / ψ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, a partial wave analysis of the decay J / ψ → ϕ π 0 η is performed. We observe for the first time two new structures on the ϕ η invariant mass distribution, with significances exceeding 27 σ and 13 σ ; the first with J PC = 1 + − , mass M = ( 1908 ± 6 ( stat ) − 4 + 8 ( sys ) ) MeV / c 2 , and width Γ = ( 175 ± 13 ( stat ) − 16 + 7 ( sys ) ) MeV , the second with J PC = 1 − − , mass M = ( 1992 ± 12 ( stat ) − 6 + 15 ( sys ) ) MeV / c 2 , and width Γ = ( 132 ± 22 ( stat ) − 4 + 17 ( sys ) ) MeV . These measurements provide important input for the strangeonium spectrum. In addition, the f 0 ( 980 ) − a 0 ( 980 ) 0 mixing signal in J / ψ → ϕ f 0 ( 980 ) → ϕ a 0 ( 980 ) 0 and the corresponding electromagnetic decay J / ψ → ϕ a 0 ( 980 ) 0 are measured with improved precision, providing crucial information to understand the nature of a 0 ( 980 ) 0 and f 0 ( 980 ) . The four decays, Λ b 0 → Σ c ( * ) + + D ( * ) − K − , are observed for the first time using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 . By considering the Λ b 0 → Λ c + D ¯ 0 K − decay as reference channel, the following branching fraction ratios are measured to be B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c + + D − K − ) B ( Λ b 0 → Λ c + D ¯ 0 K − ) = 0.282 ± 0.016 ± 0.016 ± 0.005 , B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c * + + D − K − ) B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c + + D − K − ) = 0.460 ± 0.052 ± 0.028 , B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c + + D * − K − ) B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c + + D − K − ) = 2.261 ± 0.202 ± 0.129 ± 0.046 , B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c * + + D * − K − ) B ( Λ b 0 → Σ c + + D − K − ) = 0.896 ± 0.137 ± 0.066 ± 0.018 , where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, and the third are due to uncertainties in the branching fractions of intermediate particle decays. These initial observations mark the beginning of pentaquark searches in these modes, with more datasets to become available following the LHCb upgrade. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN
The production cross sections of $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ and B$^{+}$ mesons are reported in proton-proton (pp) collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{−1}$. The cross sections are based on measurements of the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)ϕ(1020)(K$^{+}$K$^{−}$) and B$^{+}$→ J/ψ(μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$)K$^{+}$ decay channels. Results are presented in the transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) range 7–50 GeV/c and the rapidity interval |y| < 2.4 for the B mesons. The measured p$_{T}$-differential cross sections of B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ in pp collisions are well described by fixed-order plus next-to-leading logarithm perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Using previous PbPb collision measurements at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factors, R$_{AA}$, of the B mesons are determined. For p$_{T}$> 10 GeV/c, both mesons are found to be suppressed in PbPb collisions (with R$_{AA}$ values significantly below unity), with less suppression observed for the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ mesons. In this p$_{T}$ range, the R$_{AA}$ values for the B$^{+}$ mesons are consistent with those for inclusive charged hadrons and D$^{0}$ mesons. Below 10 GeV/c, both B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are found to be less suppressed than either inclusive charged hadrons or D$^{0}$ mesons, with the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $R$_{AA}$ value consistent with unity. The R$_{AA}$ values found for the B$^{+}$ and $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ are compared to theoretical calculations, providing constraints on the mechanism of bottom quark energy loss and hadronization in the quark-gluon plasma, the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.
We present a study of the semileptonic decay D 0 → π − π 0 e + ν e using an e + e − annihilation data sample of 7.93 fb − 1 collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fraction of D 0 → ρ ( 770 ) − e + ν e is measured to be ( 1.439 ± 0.033 ( stat ) ± 0.027 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 3 , which is a factor 1.6 more precise than previous measurements. By performing an amplitude analysis, we measure the hadronic form-factor ratios of D 0 → ρ ( 770 ) − e + ν e at q 2 = 0 assuming the single-pole-dominance parametrization: r V = V ( 0 ) / A 1 ( 0 ) = 1.548 ± 0.079 ( stat ) ± 0.041 ( syst ) and r 2 = A 2 ( 0 ) / A 1 ( 0 ) = 0.823 ± 0.056 ( stat ) ± 0.026 ( syst ) . A search for D 0 meson decays to the π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 . The decay D 0 → π + π − e + e − is observed for the first time when requiring that the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ϕ or ρ 0 / ω meson. The corresponding branching fractions are measured relative to the D 0 → K − π − [ e + e − ] ρ 0 / ω decay, where the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ρ 0 or ω meson. No evidence is found for the D 0 → K + K − e + e − decay and world-best limits are set on its branching fraction. The results are compared to, and found to be consistent with, the branching fractions of the D 0 → π + π − μ + μ − and D 0 → K + K − μ + μ − decays recently measured by LHCb and confirm lepton universality at the current precision. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN
Monthly Ku band sigma(sub 0) and significant wave height (SWH) histograms from the NASA altimeter on the TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite are preseneted for January through June 1993 for three latitude bands between +/- 60 degrees. The data are compared to distributions from the Geosat mission for the same months in 1987-1989. Generally, the distributions agree quite well, although there are some seasonal/hemispherical differences. The sigma(sub 0) comparison reveals an overall bias between the two altimeters with the TOPEX sigma(sub 0) higher by about 0.7 dB, which is consistent with algorithm improvements for TOPEX. The SWH distributions show strong hemispherical/seasonal changes. The seasonal/hemispherical differences between TOPEX and Geosat are consistent for SWH and sigma(sub 0). The joint distribution of sigma(sub 0) and SWH is extremely stable friom month to month. The typical SWH is independent of sigma(sub 0) for sigma(sub 0) greater than 11.3 dB. The minimum SWH grows exponentially with wind speed. This joint distribution may be useful for understanding electromagnetic bias in altimeter measurements. Finally, altimeter data are compared to buoy values from 21 overflights of the NASA verification site near Pt. Conception, California. Wave heights agree well with an root mean square (RMS) difference of only 0.2 m. Altimeter sigma(sub 0) values are compared to buoy wind speeds. The results are consistent with the -0.7 dB sigma(sub 0) offset from the histogram comparisons.
Heavy-flavor quarks produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions provide a unique opportunity to investigate the evolution of quark-initiated parton showers from initial hard scatterings to final-state hadrons. By examining jets that contain heavy-flavor hadrons, this study explores the effects of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD on jet formation and structure. The angular differences between various jet axes, Δ𝑅 axis , offer insight into the radiation patterns and fragmentation of charm quarks. The first measurement of 𝐷 0 -tagged jet axes differences in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC is presented for jets with transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch jet}_{T}$ ≥ 10 GeV/𝑐 and 𝐷 0 mesons with 𝑝$^{D^0}_{T}$ ≥ 5 GeV/𝑐. In this 𝐷 0 -meson-tagged jet measurement, three jet axis definitions, each with different sensitivities to soft, wide-angle radiation, are used: the standard axis, soft drop groomed axis, and winner-takes-all axis. Measurements of the radial distributions of 𝐷 0 mesons with respect to the jet axes, Δ𝑅 axis−D 0 , are reported, along with the angle, Δ𝑅 axis , between the three jet axes. The 𝐷 0 meson emerges as the leading particle in these jets, closely aligning with the winner-takes-all axis and diverging from the standard jet axis. The results also examine how varying the sensitivity to soft radiation with grooming influences the orientation of the soft drop jet axis and uncover that charm-jet structure is more likely to survive grooming when the soft drop axis is further from the 𝐷 0 direction, providing further evidence of the dead-cone effect recently measured by ALICE.
We report the results of the first search for B − decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − final state using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. The results are interpreted in terms of both direct baryon-number-violating B − decay and Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations which follow the standard model decay B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − . We observe no evidence for baryon number violation and set the 95% confidence-level upper limits on the ratio of baryon-number-violating and standard model branching fractions B ( B − → Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) / B ( B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) to be < 2.7 % and on the effective angular frequency of mixing ω in Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations to be < 0.76 ps − 1 (equivalent to τ mix > 1.3 ps ). The Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( → D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π − decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π − transitions are measured to be − 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( − 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN
A sample of 𝑝𝑝 collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1 and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2, is used to measure the ratio of the lifetime of the $Ξ^0_b$ baryon to that of the $Λ^0_b$ baryon, 𝑟 𝜏 $≡$ $𝜏_{Ξ^0_b}$$/𝜏_{Λ^0_b}$. The value 𝑟$^{\textrm{Run 2}}_𝜏$ =1.004 ± 0.009 ± 0.006 is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This value is averaged with the corresponding value from Run 1 to obtain 𝑟 𝜏 =1.004 ± 0.008 ± 0.005. Multiplying by the known value of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime yields $𝜏_{Ξ^0_b}$ = 1.475 ± 0.012 ± 0.008 ± 0.009 ps, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime. This measurement improves the precision of the current world average of the $Ξ^0_b$ lifetime by about a factor of two, and is in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions.
