Powder X-ray diffraction of altrenogest, C 21 H 26 O 2
The crystal structure of altrenogest has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Altrenogest crystallizes in space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 (#19) with a = 7.286 916(16), b = 10.580 333(19), c = 22.266 08(7) Å, V = 1716.671(6) Å 3 , and Z = 4 at 295 K. Thermal expansion between 113 and 295 K is anisotropic. An O–H···O hydrogen bond links the molecules into chains along the c-axis. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).
Crystal structure of danofloxacin mesylate (C 19 H 21 FN 3 O 3 )(CH 3 O 3 S)
The crystal structure of danofloxacin mesylate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Danofloxacin mesylate crystallizes in space group P1 (#1) with a = 6.77474(8), b = 12.4973(4), c = 12.82826(28) Å, α = 84.8709(29), β = 87.7501(10), γ = 74.9916(4)°, V = 1044.723(11) Å 3 , and Z = 2. The protonation of the danofloxacin cations was established by the analysis of potential intermolecular interactions and differs from that expected from isolated-cation calculations. The crystal structure consists of alternating layers of cations and anions parallel to the ac-plane. There is parallel stacking of the oxoquinoline rings along the a-axis. The expected N–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds between the cations and anions are not present. Each cation makes an N–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bond with the other cation, resulting in zig-zag chains along the a-axis. Both cations have strong intramolecular O–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds. There are several C–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds between the danofloxacin cations and mesylate anions. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).
Natural Abundance Isotope Ratio Measurements of Organic Molecules Using 21 T FTICR MS
Subtle variations in stable isotope ratios at natural abundance are challenging to measure but can yield critical insights into biological, physical, and geochemical processes. Well established methods, particularly multi-collector, gas-source or plasma isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) are the gold standard for stable isotope measurement but inherent limitations in these approaches make them ill-suited to determining site-specific and multiply substituted isotopic abundances of all but a few compounds, or to characterizing mixtures or larger intact molecules. Additionally, Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS), namely Orbitrap mass spectrometry, has recently demonstrated the ability to measure natural abundance isotope ratios with chemically informative accuracy and precision. Here, we report the first use of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) for the accurate (<1‰) and precise (<1‰ standard error) simultaneous determination of $δ$ 13 C and $δ$ 15 N in caffeine isotopologues and provide a discussion of the critical instrumental parameters necessary to make such measurements. Finally, we report the ability to make these measurements with online liquid chromatography, expanding the ability of this technique to explore mixtures in the future.

Internal Conversion between Bright (1 1 B $^+_u$) and Dark (21 A $^-_g$) States in s- trans -Butadiene and s- trans -Hexatriene
Internal conversion (IC) between the two lowest singlet excited states, 1 1 B$_u^+$ and 2 1 A$_g^–$, of s-trans-butadiene and s-trans-hexatriene is investigated using a series of single- and multi- reference wave function and density functional theory (DFT) methodologies. Three independent types of the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOMCC) theory capable of providing an accurate and balanced description of one- as well as two-electron transitions, abbreviated as δ-CR-EOMCC(2,3), DIP-EOMCC(4h2p){N o }, and DEA-EOMCC(4p2h){N u } or DEA-EOMCC(3p1h,4p2h){N u }, consistently predict that the 1 1 B$_u^+$/2 1 A$_g^–$ crossing in both molecules occurs along the bond length alternation coordinate. However, the analogous 1 1 B$_u^+$ and 2 1 A$_g^–$ potentials obtained with some multireference approaches, such as CASSCF and MRCIS(D), as well as with the linear-response formulation of time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), do not cross. Hence, caution needs to be exercised when studying the low-lying singlet excited states of polyenes with conventional multiconfigurational methods and TDDFT. The multistate many-body perturbation theory methods, such as XMCQDPT 2 , do correctly reproduce the curve crossing. Among the simplest and least expensive computational methodologies, the DFT approaches that incorporate the contributions of doubly excited configurations, abbreviated as MRSF (mixed reference spin-flip) TDDFT and SSR( 4,4 ), accurately reproduce our best EOMCC results. This is highly promising for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations in larger systems.

System-level performance and degradation of 21 GWDC of utility-scale PV plants in the United States
We assess the performance of a fleet of 411 utility-scale (i.e., >5 MWAC and ground-mounted) photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 21.1 GWDC (16.3 GWAC) of capacity, which achieved commercial operations in the United States from 2007 to 2016. This fleet of projects contributed more than 50% of all solar electricity generated in the United States in 2017. Using detailed information on individual project characteristics, in conjunction with modeled irradiance data, we assess the extent to which actual first-year performance has lived up to both modeled and stated expectations. We then analyze system-level performance degradation in subsequent years by employing a “fixed effects” regression model to statistically isolate the impact of age on system performance. We find that this fleet of utility-scale PV projects has generally lived up to ex ante expectations for first-year performance but that subsequent system-level degradation—found to be −1.3%/year (±0.2%)—has, on average, been worse than both ex ante expectations (commonly −0.5%/year) and results from past studies (ranging from −0.8%/year to −1.0%/year). We emphasize that −1.3%/year is a system-level estimate that captures more than just module degradation (e.g., including soiling, balance of plant degradation, and downtime for maintenance and/or other events). A side analysis of a variety of project characteristics suggests that system-level degradation rates tend to be of lower magnitude among newer projects and larger projects and at sites with lower long-term average temperatures.

Bibliometric review and recent advances in total scattering pair distribution function analysis: 21 years in retrospect
Global research activities have been driven by the quest to develop and characterize novel materials for technological advancements. The total scattering pair distribution function (TSPDF) is a powerful and versatile characterization technique for examining the structural details of diverse complex materials including liquid, amorphous, disordered crystalline, and nanostructured materials. Thus, it is critical to keep track of research progress, identify research gaps, and future research directions of the application of the TSPDF technique in materials development and discovery. In this work, a bibliometric analysis of literature regarding the TSPDF technique between 2000 and 2021 was conducted using datasets retrieved from the Web of Science database. The research trends based on publication outputs, research subject distribution, co-authorships among institutions, countries/regions, co-citation of referenced sources, and keyword co-occurrence are evaluated and discussed herein. The impact of the TSPDF technique is projected to increase due to its importance in probing emerging functional materials, and the advances in specialized facilities and instrumentation among the scientific communities engaged with it. Finally, current and emerging research hotspots related to TSPDF technique such as catalysis, computer modeling and simulation, pharmaceutics, machine learning, hydrogen storage, battery materials, and layered structured materials are also identified and discussed.
