Resonances and librations of some Apollo and Amor asteroids with the Earth.

The orbital evolution of the Apollo asteroids 1620 Geographos and 1685 Toro and Amor asteroids 433 Eros, 1221 Amor, and 1627 Ivar are investigated by numerical integration. All these asteroids, with the exception of Geographos, exhibit systematic orbital couplings with the Earth during the time interval studied (1600-2350 A.D.). 1685 Toro is captured into libration once with Venus due to the 13.5 resonance, and once with the Earth due to the 8:5 resonance. Both librations are unstable because of the effect of the 13:8 near commensurability of the Venus-Earth system. 433 Eros exhibits no libration pattern; the regular variation of its orbital period is due to the beat-effect of the 4:7 resonance with the Earth.

Two-stage, low noise advanced technology fan. 5: Acoustic final report

The NASA Q2S(quiet two-stage) fan is a 0.836m (32.9 in.) diameter model of the STF 433 engine fan, selected in a 1972 study for an Advanced Technology Transport (ATT) airplane. Noise-control features include: low tip speed, moderate stage pressure rise, large blade-vane spacings, no inlet guide vanes, and optimum blade and vane numbers. Tests were run on the baseline Q2S fan with standard inlet and discharge ducts. Further tests were made of a translating centerbody sonic inlet device and treated discharge ducts. Results were scaled to JT8D and JT3D engine fan size for comparison with current two-stage fans, and were also scaled to STF 433 fan size to compare calculated ATT flyover noise with FAR 36 limits. Baseline Q2S results scaled to JT8D and JT3D engine fan sizes showed substantial noise reductions. Calculated unsuppressed baseline ATT flyovers averaged about 2.5 EPNdB below FAR 36 limits. Using measured sonic inlet results, scaled baseline Q2S fan results, and calculated attenuations for a 1975 technology duct liner, projected flyover noise calculations for the ATT averaged about FAR 36 limits minus 10 EPNdB. Advances in suppression technology required to meet the 1985 goal of FAR 36 limits minus 20 EPNdB are discussed.

The extragalactic nature of CL4

The variable, unresolved radio source CL4 (2048 + 312) is identified as a quasar, in light of spectroscopy of its faint optical counterpart which shows a single, broad emission line at 6480 A. Although candidate redshifts of 1.31, 2.39, and 3.18 are proposed for identification of the emission feature as Mg II, semiforbidden C III, and C IV, respectively, the precise redshift cannot be determined without an extension of the current spectral coverage of this red object into the blue. CL4, together with the radio source 1910 + 052, which shows similar properties and for which an optical identification search was unsuccessfully conducted, is part of a group of eight compact, variable radio sources which may be related to SS 433. A compilation of evidence for this association shows that none of the eight objects are good candidates for an SS 433 analog.

The Effects of Surface Roughness on the NEAR XRS Elemental Results: Monte-Carlo Modeling

The objective of the NEAR-Shoemaker X-ray Gamma-Ray Spec1roscopy ("XGRS") investigation was to determine the elemental composition of the near-Earth asteroid 433 Eros. The X-ray Spectrometer (XRS) system measured the characteristic fluorescence of six major elements (Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Fe) in the 1-10 keV energy range excited by the interaction of solar X-rays with the upper 100 microns of the surface of 433 Eros. Various investigators, using both laboratory experiments and computer simulations have established that X-ray fluorescent line ratios can be influenced by small-scale surface roughness at high incidence or emission angles. The effect on the line ratio is specific to the geometry, excitation spectrum, and composition involved, In general, however, the effect is only substantial for ratios of lines with a significant energy difference between them: Fe/Si and Ca/Si are much more likely to be affected than AI/Si or Mg/Si. We apply a Monte-Carlo code to the specific geometry and spectrum of a major NEAR XRS solar flare observation, using an H chondrite composition as the substrate. The seventeen most abundant elements were included in the composition model, from oxygen to titanium.

(abstract) Satellite Dynamics About Eros

The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) mission spacecraft will arrive at Asteroid 433 (Eros) in February 1999. Following an initial period of characterization, the science phase of the mission will commence, and unprecedented information concerning an asteroid's shape, mass, density, composition, and rotational dynamics will be sent to Earth for analysis. It will also mark the start of orbital operations about the most complex and irregular gravity field ever encountered in the history of space exploration. The severity of Eros' distortion from the usual spheroid bodies encountered in planetary exploration leads to fundamental differences in the orbital dynamics about it. Operations about Eros will also serve as an exciting test of orbital determination and prediction in an orbital environment which can be chaotic in some instances. General orbital dynamics about Eros are discussed. Some simple formulae are given for the secular motion of the node and argument of periapsis. Conditions for a satellite orbit to escape from Eros are discussed, and some simple results derived. Finally, the chaotic nature of certain orbits about Eros are discussed, and the consequences for orbit prediction are investigated.

In situ molecular imaging of ion clusters reveals the acid gas capture capacity and mechanism of water-lean ionic liquids

Water-lean solvents are a promising technology for capturing acid gases like carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). In situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ionization mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) is used to study a representative solvent N-(2-ethoxyethyl)-3-morpholinopropan-1-amine (2-EEMPA) with different CO 2 loadings to reveal the complex solvent structure upon CO 2 capture. Characteristic peaks of 2-EEMPA, such as m/z – 215 C 11 H 23 N 2 O 2 – (deprotonated 2-EEMPA) and m/z + 217 C 11 H 25 N 2 O 2 + (protonated 2-EEMPA), are detected due to acid gas uptake. Also, solvent molecules and carboxylate ion pairs, such as m/z – 259 C 12 H 23 N 2 O 4 – [(deprotonated 2-EEMPA∙∙∙CO 2 )] and m/z + 261 C 12 H 25 N 2 O 4 + (protonated 2-EEMPA∙∙∙CO 2 ), are observed. Interestingly, more than one CO 2 molecule can be captured per each solvent molecule as evidenced in SIMS mass spectra, for example, m/z – 321 C 13 H 25 N 2 O 7 – [(deprotonated 2-EEMPA)∙∙∙2CO 2 ∙∙∙H 2 O], m/z + 305 C 13 H 25 N 2 O 4 + [(protonated 2-EEMPA)∙∙∙2CO 2 ], m/z – 389 C 17 H 29 N 2 O 8 – [(deprotonated 2-EEMPA)∙∙∙3CO 2 ∙∙∙3CH 2 ], and m/z + 373 C 16 H 25 N 2 O 8 + [(protonated 2-EEMPA)∙∙∙3CO 2 ∙∙∙2C]. However, the monomer of 2-EEMPA and CO 2 seems to be most prevalent. Furthermore, solvent clusters are detected in loaded solvents, for instance m/z + 433 C 22 H 49 N 4 O 4 + [(2-EEMPA)2∙∙∙H] and m/z + 646 [(2-EEMPA) 3 -2H], while capturing CO 2 at different amounts. Relative abundance of cluster ions provides a semi-qualitative venue to assess the free energies of gas capture energetics, indicating the relative stability trend within the same solvent system, previously impossible. These observed ion clusters are verified with molecular modeling, where dimer, trimer, and cluster ions are validated for their presence either due to weak molecular interactions or hydrogen bonds. In situ molecular imaging of ionic liquids and molecular modeling reveals that the acid gas capture mechanism by ionic liquids includes both physical adsorption and chemical bonding with multiple reaction pathways, engaging cluster formation and alteration of solvent structures.

Hydrogenolysis of n -eicosane over Ru-based catalysts in a continuous flow reactor

The hydrogenolysis of n-eicosane (C 20 H 42 ) was studied under differential conditions over Ru-based catalysts including Ru/SiO 2 , Ru/TiO 2 , and Ru/SBA-15, using a continuous flow reactor that was specially designed for large hydrocarbon reactants that are solids at room temperature. Similar rates and product distributions were obtained for Ru/SiO 2 and Ru/SBA-15 at 433 K, with the most abundant products being C 1 and C 19 hydrocarbons and smaller amounts of C 8 to C 18 also being produced. The higher yield of C 1 and C 19 indicates that cleavage of the terminal C-C bond is somewhat more facile than an internal C-C bond. At 473 K the product distribution shifted to mostly C 1 suggesting that, at this temperature, the adsorbed alkyl fragments undergo complete C-C bond scission prior to desorbing. Here, the conversion was also found to be inversely proportional to the H 2 pressure. Similar results were obtained for Ru/TiO 2 except this catalyst was found to be less active than both Ru/SiO 2 and Ru/SBA-15.

Coal-derived graphene foam and micron-sized silicon composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Silicon-based materials demonstrate significant potential as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode, but their expansion and degradation present engineering design challenges for commercial application. In this study, a porous three-dimensional (3D) graphene and micron-sized silicon composite anode (Si@G foam) was synthesized using humic acid (HA) derived from coal as a graphene precursor. In-situ formation of graphene structure through reducing HA was confirmed by Raman spectra. The reduced HA (rHA) shows similar electrical conductivity compared to the commercial conductive carbon. SEM images depict a 3D skeleton of coal-derived graphene, with silicon particles distributed on the 3D graphene foam's internal surface. The Si@G composite-anode displays a good reversible capacity of ~656 mAh/g at a current density of 50 mA/g, as well as a high-rate capability of ~433 mAh/g at a current density of 800 mA/g, and outstanding cycling stability –89.8% capacity retention after 300 cycles, which is significantly higher than that of other foam structures. During lithiation and de-lithiation, the graphene foam serves as a matrix of electrical conductors and a volume expansion support for silicon. This 3D graphene network will be beneficial for developing advanced silicon-based anodes for high-performance LIBs.

Radiation-induced negative optical nonlinearities in fused silica, sapphire, and borosilicate glass

Here, negative nonlinear absorption is reported in neutron- and gamma-irradiated high-OH content fused silica, low-OH content fused silica, sapphire, borosilicate glass, and radiation-resistant borosilicate glass irradiated to total neutron fluences of 3.4 × 10 16 n ∙ cm –2 (42 Mrad γ), 1.7 × 10 17 n ∙ cm –2 (211 Mrad γ), and 3.6 × 10 17 n ∙ cm –2 (433 Mrad γ). Nonlinear absorption coefficients were measured via Z-scan and are on the order of – (10 –14 –10 –10 ) m∙W –1 . The Z-scan also reveals a negative nonlinear index of refraction in neutron- and gamma-irradiated radiation-resistant borosilicate glass on the order of –10 –19 m 2 ∙ W –1 . Thermal annealing at temperatures up to 800 °C is shown to restore these nonlinearities to their positive unirradiated values in all four materials. All Z-scan measurements were performed at 532 nm with a nanosecond pulsed laser. The occurrence of negative nonlinearities may be attributed to the presence of metallic impurities and the resulting saturable absorption. A limited effect of photobleaching is observed in measurements and is quantified in multiple Z-scans.

Accelerating matrix-centric graph processing on GPUs through bit-level optimizations

Even though it is well known that binary values are common in graph applications (e.g., adjacency matrix), how to leverage the phenomenon for efficiency has not yet been adequately explored. This paper presents a systematic study on how to unlock the potential of the bit-level optimizations of graph computations that involve binary values. It proposes a two-level representation named Bit-Block Compressed Sparse Row (B2SR) and presents a series of optimizations to the graph operations on B2SR by the intrinsics of modern GPUs. It additionally introduces Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) as an efficient way to best configure the bit-level optimizations on the fly. Additionally, the DQN-based adaptive tile size selector with dedicated model training can reach 68% prediction accuracy. Evaluations on NVIDIA Pascal and Volta GPUs show that the optimizations bring up to 40× and 6555× for essential GraphBLAS kernels SpMV and SpGEMM, respectively, making GraphBLAS-based BFS accelerate up to 433×, SSSP, PR, and CC up to 35×, and TC up to 52×.

Chemometrics and visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to classify plutonium dioxide

Diffuse reflectance (DR) spectra in the Vis-NIR (∼380–1050 nm) region were acquired for a series of PuO 2 samples with a spot size of about 10 × 10 μm. Two batches of six PuO 2 samples, synthesized approximately 7.5 months apart, were prepared using both Pu(III) and Pu(IV) oxalate precursors at three distinct calcination temperatures (450, 650, and 950 °C). This yielded a total of 12 PuO 2 samples and 433 DR spectra. The DR spectrum of PuO 2 contained numerous peaks in the visible region, and characteristic features were identified with respect to calcination temperature and chemistry. A distinct peak multiplet near 615 nm was observed for samples prepared at low calcination temperatures, and a peak near 660 nm was observed for higher calcination temperatures. A multivariate classification strategy based on principal component analysis (PCA) was developed to distinguish PuO 2 calcination temperatures of 450, 650, and 950 °C with 100 % accuracy. Classification results also indicate the potential to distinguish chemical processing history (i.e., Pu(III) or Pu(IV)) based on the spectra with 72 % accuracy based on k-nearest neighbors applied to the PCA scores. Partial least squares discriminant analysis was used to identify variation among batches with 88 % accuracy and found that peaks near 669, 681, 811, and 970 nm were the most useful for predicting the batch identity. Here, this work demonstrates how micro-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and chemometrics can be used to classify PuO 2 processing history based on Vis-NIR spectral features. Combining the chemometric approach with mapping sequences could provide a rapid, nondestructive approach to classify Pu oxide materials for environmental, forensics, and nonproliferation applications.

Effect of Temperature on the Pilot-Scale Catalytic Pyrolysis of Loblolly Pine

A pilot-scale biomass catalytic pyrolysis unit with a nominal throughput of one tonne of biomass per day (1TPD) has been in operation since 2013 to investigate the process parameters that have the largest influence on biocrude yield, oxygen content, and chemical composition. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature, ranging from 433 to 581 °C, on biocrude yield and quality. A locally sourced loblolly pine feedstock and a commercially available, spray dried, nonzeolitic γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst were used in individual experiments conducted at each pyrolysis temperature to achieve a minimum of 4 h of steady-state continuous operation. Typically, 600–800 kg of biomass was fed over a 12-h period, with one experiment extended to almost 29 h (1144-kg biomass fed) and one experiment interrupted by a process upset after just 7 h (411-kg biomass fed). Comprehensive analysis of collected gas, liquid, and solid products were used to calculate carbon balances (77% to 107%) for each experiment. The biocrude yield ranged from 12 to 18 wt % C and, in general, decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The average steady-state biocrude yield as a function of temperature translated to a biocrude production rate between 40 and 50 gallons per dry ton. The biocrude oxygen content varied between 21 and 31 wt %, on a dry basis, and as expected, decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The identified components in the semivolatile biocrude products are mostly methoxyphenols and other multiphenolic compounds. The multiphenolic compounds are demethoxylated at pyrolysis temperatures above 500 °C, producing biocrudes with higher concentrations of monophenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The concentration of anhydrosugars, like levoglucosan in the biocrudes, decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature from ∼15 to ∼1 vol %.

Ag(111) Remains Significantly Reduced In Situ under Simulated Ethylene Epoxidation Conditions

Direct ethylene epoxidation is among the highest value processes in the chemical industry, yet the reaction mechanism remains debated. A central question is whether the unpromoted Ag catalyst is metallic or oxidized under reaction conditions, as this determines the active oxidant species. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at chemical potentials simulating industrial conditions, we find that under oxidizing environments, nucleophilic oxygen (∼80% surface coverage) and some carbonate impurities (∼20% coverage) form on Ag(111). Upon switching to an industrially relevant 5:2 ethylene-to-oxygen ratio at 433 K, nucleophilic oxygen is consumed, leaving mostly surface carbonate and bare Ag. The Ag(111) surface maintains ∼50% exposed metallic sites under these conditions. This indicates that proposed mechanisms involving a fully oxidized surface may not represent the state of the surface under relevant reaction conditions and that bare Ag sites, which are necessary to form the oxametallacycle intermediate thought to drive selective epoxidation, are available.

Direct Comparison of the Activity and Selectivity of Rh 1 Cu and Ni 1 Cu Single-Atom Alloy Sites for Ethanol Decomposition

Ethanol is an important source of clean hydrogen, acetaldehyde, acetic acid, acetate esters, and light hydrocarbons. Controlling the divergent reaction pathways to these products requires understanding how different active sites influence the elementary steps involved. Herein, we present a combined surface science, theory, and nanoparticle catalysis study demonstrating how two single-atom dopants (Rh and Ni) in a Cu host can distinctively alter the selectivity of alcohol conversion. Specifically, our model studies reveal that ethanol reacts on Ni 1 Cu single-atom alloys to selectively produce acetaldehyde, whereas methane and CO are also formed on Rh 1 Cu single-atom alloys. Interestingly, these different reactivities are in contrast to the behavior of the pure metals as Ni(111) and Rh(111) surfaces favor methane/CO and surface carbon/CO, respectively. DFT calculations of reaction pathways and simulated product desorption based on microkinetic analyses explain these reactivity differences, demonstrating that C–C cleavage leading to methane formation has a lower barrier on Rh single-atom sites. To test the catalytic relevance of these fundamental results we synthesized and characterized supported Ni 1 Cu and Rh 1 Cu single-atom alloy nanoparticles with dopant:Cu ratios of 1:200. Flow reactor results revealed that both Ni and Rh increased ethanol conversion over Cu and that Ni 1 Cu catalysts were >99.9% selective to acetaldehyde, while Rh 1 Cu also produced 0.6%–2.6% of equimolar methane and CO between 433 and 493 K, demonstrating that C–C bond cleavage is enabled by isolated Rh sites. Furthermore, these catalytic results bridge the pressure and materials gaps, and together, this study provides insights into how different isolated dopant sites promote different catalytic pathways.

Effect of Mixed-Solvent Environments on the Selectivity of Acid-Catalyzed Dehydration Reactions

The composition of the liquid phase can alter the rates of individual reaction steps and thus alter the selectivity of acid-catalyzed reactions, but these solvent effects are difficult to anticipate for design purposes. Herein, we report the kinetics and selectivity of Brønsted acid-catalyzed 1,2-propanediol dehydration in pure water and in aqueous mixtures of the polar aprotic cosolvents γ-valerolactone, 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, tetramethylene sulfoxide, and dimethyl sulfoxide at 433 K. We find that the major product of 1,2-propanediol dehydration is propanal in most mixed-solvent environments with selectivities between 1 and 68 mol %. In contrast, 1,2-propanediol dehydration in aqueous mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide affords acetone as the major product with up to 48% selectivity with minimal propanal formation. We use classical molecular dynamics simulations to probe these solvent effects by computing the difference between the solvation free energies of 1,2-propanediol and propanal in aqueous mixtures of polar aprotic cosolvents and in pure water. We find that the difference in the solvation free energies is correlated with the rates of propanal formation in all mixed-solvent environments, indicating that the solvent-mediated stabilization of the product state relative to the reactant state translates to increased selectivity toward the same product. Similar agreement between simulated solvation free energies and experimental reaction rates/selectivities is established for the acid-catalyzed dehydration of cis- and trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol and 1,3-cyclohexanediol. Finally, analysis of the solvation environment around 1,2-propanediol shows that dimethyl sulfoxide uniquely competes against water to solvate reactive hydroxyl groups, which causes a change in reaction mechanism in this solvent system that leads to the formation of acetone rather than propanal. Here, these results represent a step toward the computationally efficient screening of solvent systems for acid-catalyzed, liquid-phase processes.
