Charge exchange in zinc-neon

Excitation of the 4d and 5p levels of Zn+ by charge exchange bewteen Ne+ and Zn was investigated. From measured electron temperature and line intensity ratios it was concluded that charge exchange is the dominate mechanism for populating the 4d2D5/2 level of Zn+. Comparison of Zn-Ne and Zn-Ar results imply the same conclusion. No evidence for charge exchange as the dominant pumping mechanism for the 5p2Pl/2, 5p2P3/2, or 4d2D3/2 levels was obtained.

Time-controlled descent guidance in uncertain winds

A procedure has been developed for constructing a statistical model of the altitude-dependent mean wind profile from the historical record of wind measurements at particular locations. The model is constructed by fitting a Markov process, with altitude as the stage variable, to the historical wind data. The wind model, together with the aircraft dynamics and the error characteristics of the navigation system, are incorporated in the design of a state estimator, which gives the minimum variance estimate of the aircraft state and the wind vector. The state and wind estimates are used as inputs to a linear feedback law for guiding the aircraft along the nominal trajectory. An example design of a time-constrained (4D RNAV) descent guidance system is presented, showing tracking accuracy, control activity, and probability of arrival time with and without the wind estimator.

Observation of subordinate 2p/5/4d-2p/5/3p transitions in neon-like ions from Ca XI to Ni XIX

Subordinate 2p(5)4d-2p(5)3p transitions in the neon-like ions from Ca XI through Ni XIX are identified. Such transitions between excited levels have not previously been reported for ionization stages higher than Al IV, although the resonance lines are known through Zn XXI in the neon isoelectronic sequence. Measurement of the solar flux in such transitions may aid in establishing the relative importance of the several cascade processes giving rise to the observed Fe XVII resonance lines.

Widths of atomic 4s and 4p vacancy states, 46 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 50

Auger and X-ray photoelectron spectra involving N1, N2, and N3 vacancy states of Pd, Ag, Cd, In, and Sn were measured and compared with results of free atom calculations. As previously observed in Cu and Zn Auger spectra that involve 3d-band electrons, free-atom characteristics with regard to widths and structure were found in the Ag and Cd M4-N4,5N4,5 and M5-N4,5N4,5 Auger spectra that arise from transitions of 4d-band electrons. Theoretical N1 widths computed with calculated free-atom Auger energies agree well with measurements. Theory however predicts wider N2 than N3 vacancy states (as observed for Xe), while the measured N2 and N3 widths are nearly equal to each other and to the average of the calculated N2 and N3 widths. The calculations are made difficult by the exceedingly short lifetime of some 4p vacancies and by the extreme sensitivity of super-Coster-Kronig rates, which dominate the deexcitation, to the transition energy and to the fine details of the atomic potential.

Widths of atomic 4s and 4p vacancy states, Z between 46 and 50

X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectra involving N sub 1, N sub 2, and N sub 3 vacancy states of Pd, Ag, Cd, In, and Sn were measured and compared with results of free-atom calculations. As previously observed in Cu and Zn Auger spectra that involve 3d-band electrons, free-atom characteristics are found, with regard to widths and structure, in the Ag and Cd M sub 4-N sub 4,5 N sub 4,5 and M sub 5-N sub 4,5 N sub 4,5 Auger spectra that arise from transitions of 4d-band electrons. Theoretical N sub 1 widths computed with calculated free-atom Auger energies agree well with measurements. Theory, however, predicts wider N sub 2 than N sub 3 vacancy states (as observed for Xe), while the measured N sub 2 and N sub 3 widths are nearly equal to each other and to the average of the calculated N sub 2 and N sub 3 widths. The calculations are made difficult by the exceedingly short lifetime of some 4 p vacancies and by the extreme sensitivity of super-Coster-Kronig rates, which dominate the deexcitation to the transition energy and to the fine details of the atomic potential.

The MPD arc as a plasmadynamic laser source

The paper reports results of measurements of local plasma properties (electron density and temperature, radiance, and population density) in the recombining plasma flow of a high power (100 kW) quasi-steady MPD arc designed as a plasmadynamic laser source. The profiles of electron density and temperature and the populations of excited states of Ar II show large deviations from LTE and indicate the existence of population inversions between the 4d and 4p states.

Test results of flight guidance for fuel conservative descents in a time-based metered air traffic environment

The NASA developed, implemented, and flight tested a flight management algorithm designed to improve the accuracy of delivering an airplane in a fuel-conservative manner to a metering fix at a time designated by air traffic control. This algorithm provides a 3D path with time control (4D) for the TCV B-737 airplane to make an idle-thrust, clean configured (landing gear up, flaps zero, and speed brakes retracted) descent to arrive at the metering fix at a predetermined time, altitude, and airspeed. The descent path is calculated for a constant Mach/airspeed schedule from linear approximations of airplane performance with considerations given for gross weight, wind, and nonstandard pressure and temperature effects. The flight management descent algorithms are described and flight test results are presented.

Need for high resolution in VUV Rydberg state spectroscopy

The paper emphasizes the necessity of high energy resolution (resolving powers greater than 100,000) in VUV spectroscopic determinations of atomic and molecular Rydberg electronic structures. Attention is given to spectral observations of Rydberg levels in Ge I near the 4p 2P(0)1/2 limit, in Sr I near the 4d 2D3/2 limit, and in diatomic hydrogen halides (especially H I) below the X2Pi3/2 limit.

A rapid method for obtaining frequency-response functions for multiple input photogrammetric data

A two-digital-camera photogrammetric technique for measuring the motion of a vibrating spacecraft structure or wing surface and an applicable data-reduction algorithm are presented. The 3D frequency-response functions are obtained by coordinate transformation from averaged cross and autopower spectra derived from the 4D camera coordinates by Fourier transformation. Error sources are investigated analytically, and sample results are shown in graphs.

Simulation of time-control procedures for the advanced air traffic control system

The problem of mixing four-dimensional (4D) equipped aircraft - aircraft equipped with on-board guidance systems that can predict and control the touchdown time of an aircraft to an accuracy of a few seconds throughout the descent - with unequipped aircraft in the terminal area has been investigated via a real-time air traffic control simulation study. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of time errors (at 120 n. mi. from touchdown) on touchdown time scheduling, and to develop efficient algorithms and procedures to null the initial time errors prior to reaching the final control sector (30 n. mi. from touchdown). Results indicate that initial random errors of up to + or - 2 min can be handled via a single speed advisory issued in the arrival control sector, and thus the time schedule is not disrupted.

Design requirements and development of an airborne descent path definition algorithm for time navigation

The design requirements for a 4D path definition algorithm are described. These requirements were developed for the NASA ATOPS as an extension of the Local Flow Management/Profile Descent algorithm. They specify the processing flow, functional and data architectures, and system input requirements, and recommended the addition of a broad path revision (reinitialization) function capability. The document also summarizes algorithm design enhancements and the implementation status of the algorithm on an in-house PDP-11/70 computer. Finally, the requirements for the pilot-computer interfaces, the lateral path processor, and guidance and steering function are described.

Practical method for highly accurate large-scale surface calculations

An accurate and efficient film linearized muffin-tin orbital (FLMTO) technique for surface electronic-structure calculations is presented which uses only 60-70 basis functions, as opposed to the 300 functions used in the linear augmented plane-wave method. Calculations for three different (3d and 4d) transition-metal films resulted in high quality results for five-layer slabs of Cu(001), Fe(001), and Ru(001), in addition to good results for the work functions and projected density of states. By retaining the LMTO small basis size, computer time and memory are reduced, making practical the study of systems with a larger number of atoms in the two-dimensional unit cell.

An evaluation of descent strategies for TNAV-equipped aircraft in an advanced metering environment

Investigated were the effects on system throughput and fleet fuel usage of arrival aircraft utilizing three 4D RNAV descent strategies (cost optimal, clean-idle Mach/CAS and constant descent angle Mach/CAS), both individually and in combination, in an advanced air traffic control metering environment. Results are presented for all mixtures of arrival traffic consisting of three Boeing commercial jet types and for all combinations of the three descent strategies for a typical en route metering airport arrival distribution.

A theoretical study of the excited states of Ag3

Recently there was considerable interest in the properties and reactivities of small metal clusters. However, for the transition metal trimers, gas phase spectroscopy exists only for Cu3. Calculations are reported for the excited states of the Ag3 molecule. The excitation energies, geometries, derived harmonic frequencies, and transition moments are presented. The electronic structure of these states is very similar to the analogous states of Cu3. From the VCI wave functions transition moments were calculated between each of the Rydberg excited states and the ground state for an equilateral triangle geometry with R sub Ag-Ag = 5.3 a sub 0. One state was computed for the configuration 4d29 5sa sup prime 2 sub 1 5se sup prime 1 sub x 5se sup prime 1 sub y. This configuration was considered since the corresponding configuration for Cu3 is low-lying. Calculations were carried out for a quartet wavefunction in which the 4d hole was localized on the central Ag atom. The spectrum for Ag3 is expected to be simpler than for Cu3 since the 5s2 4d9 states are shifted to higher energy.

Differential electron scattering cross sections for the first optically forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II

Differential electron scattering cross sections have been measured for dipole-forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II in the angular range theta = 4-17 deg at 50 eV. These provide the first recorded angular distributions for an optically forbidden transition. It is found that while the cross section for excitation of the 4s (2)S-3d(9)4s(2) (2)D transition in Zn II is small, those for the 3s (2)S-3d (2)D, 4s (2)S (unresolved lines) in Mg II, and the 5s (2)S-4d(9)5s(2) D in Cd II are comparable in magnitude with the cross sections for resonance excitation. In addition, for Cd II it is found that the allowed and forbidden transitions have very similar angular distributions, and it is proposed that excitation to the 2D state may be dominated by a virtual 'double-dipole' transition via the 2P state. Also, the total excitation cross section of the resonance 2P state in Cd II is a factor of four higher than that predicted by the Gaunt factor approximation, suggesting that the accepted value for the oscillator strength may be too low.

Spectra of noise and amplified turbulence emanating from shock-turbulence interaction

This work is a small extension of NACA studies of the early fifties that predicted amplification of turbulence on passing through a shock wave (observed for turbulent boundary layers), as well as the generation of intense noise (observed for supersonic jets). The first solved the basic gasdynamics problem of the interaction of an infinite planar shock with a single three-dimensional spectrum component of turbulence (an oblique sinusoidal shear wave). The second developed the comprehensive 3D spectrum analysis necessary to generalize the scenario to the interaction of a shock wave with convected homogeneous turbulence. Numerical calculations were carried out to yield curves (vs. Mach number) of rms sound pressure, temperature fluctuation, and two components of turbulent velocity downstream of the shock, for two cases of preshock turbulence. The present numerical study reproduces these for one case and provides in addition their one-dimensional power spectra (vs. wavenumber of frequency). Ratios of the several postshock spectra to the longitudinal preshock turbulence spectrum (4D) have been computed for a wide range of Mach numbers; curves vs. wavenumber are presented for two scenarios of preshock turbulence: isotropy and axisymmetry, both based on the von Karman 3D spectrum.

Photoemission studies of core level shifts in HgCdTe, CdMnTe, and HgZnTe

The results of photoemission studies of core level shifts in the Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te, Cd(1-x)Mn(x)Te, and Hg(1-x)Zn(x)Te alloys are discussed. In Hg(0.7)Cd(0.3)Te, the Hg 5d level is found to shift to lower binding energy by 0.1 eV, and the Cd 4d level to shift to higher binding energy by 0.25 eV upon alloying (relative to their binaries). The Born-Haber cycle is used to determine core level binding energies relative to the valence-band maximum in the context of tight-binding theory, and calculated core level shifts upon alloying in HgCdTe are shown to be too small to account for the observed values. A natural valence-band offset between HgTe and CdTe of 0.35 eV is found.

Whistle Gauge Measures Flow And Temperature

Simple, rugged gauge used to measure speed of flow and temperature of steam or other gas flowing through pipes of arbitrary diameter, from 1 to 28 in. or larger. Specially designed, instrumented whistle - has no moving parts, small, nonobstruction, operates at high temperature and pressure, and cleans itself. Does not operate at zero flow, but at moderate flows (tens of meters per second) generates intense sound for use in measurements. Consists of slanted ring groove of depth D and pressure taps in wall of pipe carrying flow to be measured. Resonant wavelength of sound generated by ring groove depends primarily on size and shape of groove and approximately equal to 4D.
