Space station prototype Sabatier reactor design verification testing

A six-man, flight prototype carbon dioxide reduction subsystem for the SSP ETC/LSS (Space Station Prototype Environmental/Thermal Control and Life Support System) was developed and fabricated for the NASA-Johnson Space Center between February 1971 and October 1973. Component design verification testing was conducted on the Sabatier reactor covering design and off-design conditions as part of this development program. The reactor was designed to convert a minimum of 98 per cent hydrogen to water and methane for both six-man and two-man reactant flow conditions. Important design features of the reactor and test conditions are described. Reactor test results are presented that show design goals were achieved and off-design performance was stable.

Artificial meteor ablation studies - Olivine

Artificial meteor ablation has been performed on a Mg-rich olivine sample by means of an arc-heated plasma of ionized air. Experimental conditions simulated a meteor traveling about 12 km/sec at an altitude of 70 km. The mineral content of the original olivine was 98% olivine (including traces of olivine alteration products) and 2% chromite. The forsterite content of the original olivine was Fo 89 and increased to Fo 94 in the recrystallized olivine after ablation. In addition, lamella-like intergrowths of magnetite were prevalent. Wherever magnetite occurred, Mg increased and Fe decreased in the recrystallized olivine. The Fe for the magnetite exsolved from the original olivine crystals. Individual particles (i.e., spherules) were also characterized by magnetite intergrowths. Fusion crusts on the Allende and Murchison meteorites were compared with the fusion crust on the olivine sample. The Allende fusion crust consisted of a recrystallized olivine, richer in Mg and deficient in Fe in comparison with the original meteorite's olivine, and abundant magnetite grains.

Evidence from charged particle studies for the distortion of the Jovian magnetosphere

Consideration of the relationship between the rotation of Jupiter's magnetic field and time variations in the intensity of approximately 6- to 30-MeV electrons observed by the University of Chicago experiment on Pioneer 10 in the outer regions of Jupiter's magnetosphere (R greater than 20 Jupiter radii). For R equal to or greater than 40 Jupiter radii the authors' observations are found to be consistent with rigid corotation of the magnetosphere with Jupiter. For R equal to or greater than 40 Jupiter radii, significant deviations from rigid corotation appear with the observed phase of the intensity variations leading the phase expected for rigid corotation on the inbound pass and lagging on the outbound pass. From a different point of view it is found that the time delay between the observed times of intensity minimums and the times expected on the basis of a rigid 9 hour 55 minute period for the intensity variations increased steadily while Pioneer 10 was within the magnetosphere and had reached approximately a ten hour time difference when the spacecraft left the magnetosphere at R approximately equal to 98 Jupiter radii outbound.

Flow tracing fidelity of scattering aerosol in laser Doppler velocimetry

An experimental method for determinating the flow tracing fidelity of a scattering aerosol used in laser Doppler velocimeters was developed with particular reference to the subsonic turbulence measurements. The method employs the measurement of the dynamic response of a flow seeding aerosol excited by acoustic waves. The amplitude and frequency of excitation were controlled to simulate the corresponding values of fluid turbulence components. Experimental results are presented on the dynamic response of aerosols over the size range from 0.1 to 2.0 microns in diameter and over the frequency range 100 Hz to 100 kHz. It was observed that unit density spherical scatterers with diameters of 0.2 microns followed subsonic air turbulence frequency components up to 100 kHz with 98 percent fidelity.

Measurement and analysis of aircraft far-field aerodynamic noise

A systematic investigation of aircraft far-field radiated, aerodynamically generated noise was conducted. The test phase of the original program involved the measurement of the noise produced by five gliding aircraft in an aerodynamically clean configuration during low altitude flyovers. These aircraft had gross weights that ranged from 5785 to 173 925N (1300 to 39,000 pounds), fly-by velocities from 30 to 98.5m/sec (58 to 191.5 knots or 98 to 323 ft/sec) and wing aspect ratios from 6.59 to 18.25. The results of these measurements were used to develop an equation relating aerodynamic noise to readily evaluated physical and operational parameters of the aircraft. A non-dimensional frequency spectrum, based on the mean wing thickness, was also developed.

Evaluation of communication systems using both time and frequency domain techniques

The present work investigates the measurement of the mean-square error of linear systems and the power in a random waveform using digital simulation. A postprocessor is described which yields all necessary information for determining input signal power, output power, average system gain, average system time delay, and system mean-square error. It is shown that a minimum of 10,000 data points must be processed if 4% accuracy with 98% confidence is required for the determination of the power in a random waveform.

Cosmological considerations regarding Uranus

The cosmogony of Uranus is discussed within the context of a picture in which solid condensed materials accumulate to form a large body, which then acquires significant amounts of gas from the primitive solar nebula. Of prime cosmogonical importance is the tilt of the equatorial plane of the planet and of the plane of the satellite orbits by 98 deg with respect to the plane of the planetary orbit. The tilt of the planet can easily occur as a result of a major collision during the formation process; it seems most likely that the tilt of the satellite orbits requires that they were formed from a gaseous disk rotating about the planet after the tilt of the planetary rotational axis had occurred. Possible methods for tilting this gaseous disk are discussed. A strong early magnetic field may have helped in this and may have played an essential role in slowing down the spin of the planet to the present observed value. These processes may have produced significant compositional differences between the satellites of Uranus and those of Jupiter and Saturn.

Asteroids - Spectral reflectance and color characteristics. II

New spectrophotometry for 31 asteroids, and improved data for nine previously observed, is presented, raising the total sample to 98. Several important new spectral types have been found. Asteroid 349 Dembowska is the first large main-belt asteroid found to resemble ordinary chondritic meteorites in spectral properties (it is similar to LL6 chondrites in pyroxene/olivine content). The first two measured Trojan asteroids show unusual spectra not compatible with carbonaceous chondrites or other known meteorites. The spectrum of Mars-crosser 887 Alinda is compatible with unequilibrated chondrites. Most fainter asteroids (especially those in the outer half of the belt) have flat spectra indicating probable carbonaceous composition. Compositional heterogeneity of Hirayama families is common among the 16 families studied to date. But individual asteroids seem to have remarkably uniform surface compositions, indicated by the usual lack of spectral changes with rotation. Spectra of a preliminary sample of proposed meteorite source-bodies are consistent with derivation of meteorites by proposed mechanisms, but further observations are needed.

Low gravity synthesis of polymers with controlled molecular configuration

Heterogeneous chemical systems have been studied for the synthesis of isotactic polypropylene in order to establish baseline parameters for the reaction process and to develop sensitive and accurate methods of analysis. These parameters and analytical methods may be used to make a comparison between the polypropylene obtained at one g with that of zero g (gravity). Baseline reaction parameters have been established for the slurry (liquid monomer in heptane/solid catalyst) polymerization of propylene to yield high purity, 98% isotactic polypropylene. Kinetic data for the slurry reaction showed that a sufficient quantity of polymer for complete characterization can be produced in a reaction time of 5 min; this time is compatible with that available on a sounding rocket for a zero-g simulation experiment. The preformed (activated) catalyst was found to be more reproducible in its activity than the in situ formed catalyst.

Thrust performance of isolated 36-chute suppressor plug nozzles with and without ejectors at Mach numbers from 0 to 0.45

Plug nozzles with chute-type noise suppressors were tested with and without ejector shrouds at free-stream Mach numbers from 0 to 0.45 and over a range of nozzle pressure ratios from 2 to 4. A 36-chute suppressor nozzle with an ejector had an efficiency of 94.6 percent at an assumed takeoff pressure ratio of 3.0 and a Mach number of 0.36. This represents only a 3.4 percent performance penalty when compared with the 98 percent efficiency obtained with a previously tested unsuppressed plug nozzle.

Low cost processes for solar-grade silicon

Upgrading metallurgical grade silicon is being pursued in four associated areas in order to improve the purity of the normally 98% material. The first two work areas involve purification of raw materials entering the process in addition to upgrading the arc furnace itself. The second two areas of process upgrading comprise improving the purity of the silicon after it leaves the arc furnace by reactive gas blowing and unidirectional freezing. The best cell produced to date was fabricated from MG-Si that had been blown with an O2-Cl2 mixture, unidirectionally solidified, and 6-float-zone passed (to determine a base boron level of 0.04 ohm/cm). The cell showed a 10.7% AMO efficiency. In the other processes category, the use of silicates as a silicon source and of electrolysis as a process were studied. The best electrolytic process uses a 1000 C fused salt of silica in cryolite.

Observations of Mercury's magnetic field

Magnetic field data obtained by Mariner 10 during the third and final encounter with the planet Mercury on 16 March 1975 were studied. A well developed bow shock and modest magnetosphere, previously observed at first encounter on 29 March 1974, were again observed. In addition, a much stronger magnetic field near closest approach, 400 gamma versus 98 gamma, was observed at an altitude of 327 km and approximately 70 deg north Mercurian latitude. Spherical harmonic analysis of the data provide an estimate of the centered planetary magnetic dipole of 4.7 x 10 to the 22nd power Gauss/cu cm with the axis tilted 12 deg to the rotation axis and in the same sense as Earth's. The interplanetary field was sufficiently different between first and third encounters that in addition to the very large field magnitude observed, it argues strongly against a complex induction process generating the observed planetary field. While a possibility exists that Mercury possesses a remanent field due to magnetization early in its formation, a present day active dynamo seems to be a more likely candidate for its origin.

Application of strainrange partitioning to the prediction of creep-fatigue lives of AISI types 304 and 316 stainless steel

As a demonstration of the predictive capabilities of the method of Strainrange Partitioning, published high-temperature, low cycle, creep-fatigue test results on AISI Types 304 and 316 stainless steel were analyzed and calculated, cyclic lives compared with observed lives. Predicted lives agreed with observed lives within factors of two for 76 percent, factors of three for 93 percent, and factors of four for 98 percent of the laboratory tests analyzed. Agreement between observed and predicted lives is judged satisfactory considering that the data are associated with a number of variables (two alloys, several heats and heat treatments, a range of temperatures, different testing techniques, etc.) that are not directly accounted for in the calculations.

Emissions of oxides of nitrogen from an experimental premixed-hydrogen burner

Flame-tube experiments using premixed hydrogen and air were conducted to determine the emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) resulting from ultralean combustion. Measurements of NOx emissions and combustion efficiency were made for inlet mixture temperatures of 600 and 700 K, pressures of 3.8 x 10 to the 5th power and 5.2 x 10 to the 5th power N/m squared, reference velocities of 15 to 18 m/sec, and equivalence ratios of 0.2 to 0.4. At the 700 K inlet mixture temperature, NOx emissions were 0.06 ppmv, and combustion efficiency was 98 percent at an equivalence ratio of 0.24. The use of a high-blockage (92-percent blockage) flameholder made it possible to conduct tests without upstream burning in the premixing duct for mixtures with equivalence ratios less than 0.4. For richer mixtures upstream burning did occur and prevented further testing.

An improved turbine disk design to increase reliability of aircraft jet engines

An analytical study was performed on a novel disk design to replace the existing high-pressure turbine, stage 1 disk on the CF6-50 turbofan engine. Preliminary studies were conducted on seven candidate disk design concepts. An integral multidisk design with bore entry of the turbine blade cooling air was selected as the improved disk design. This disk has the unique feature of being redundant such that if one portion of the disk would fail, the remaining portion would prevent the release of large disk fragments from the turbine system. Low cycle fatigue lives, initial defect propagation lives, burst speed, and the kinetic energies of probable disk fragment configurations were calculated, and comparisons were made with the existing disk, both in its current material, IN 718, and with the substitution of an advanced alloy, Rene 95. The design for redundancy approach which necessitated the addition of approximately 44.5 kg (98 lb) to the design disk substantially improved the life of the disk. The life to crack initiation was increased from 30,000 cycles to more than 100,000 cycles. The cycles to failure from initial defect propagation were increased from 380 cycles to 1564 cycles. Burst speed was increased from 126 percent overspeed to 149 percent overspeed. Additionally, the maximum fragment energies associated with a failure were decreased by an order of magnitude.

Water Hyacinths and Alligator Weeds for Final Filtration of Sewage

The potential of water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) (Mart.) Solms and alligator weeds (Alternanthera philoxerides) (Mart.) Griesb. as secondary and tertiary filtration systems for domestic sewage was demonstrated. These two vascular aquatic plants reduced the suspended solids, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, BOD sub 5, and total organic carbon levels in domestic sewage from 60 percent to 98 percent within a two week period. These plants grown in domestic sewage were also free of toxic levels of trace heavy metals.

Satellite data for surface-mine inventory

To determine the feasibility of satellite data for surface-mine inventory, particularly as it applies to coal, a case study was conducted in Maryland. A band-ratio method was developed to measure disturbed surface areas, and it proved to be extendible both temporally and geographically. This method was used to measure area changes in the region over three time periods from September 1972 through July 1974 and to map the entire two-county area for 1973. For mines ranging between 31 and 244 acres (12 to 98 hectares) the measurement accuracy of total affected acreage was determined to be 92%. Mines of 120 acres (50 hectares) and larger were measured with greater accuracy, some within one percent of the actual area. The ability to identify, classify, and measure strip-mine surfaces in a two-county area (1,541 square kilometers - 595 square miles) of western Maryland was demonstrated through the use of computer processing. On the basis of these results the use of LANDSAT satellite data and multilevel sampling of aircraft and field verification inspections, multispectral analysis of digital data is shown to be an effective, rapid, and accurate means of monitoring the surface mining cycle.
