Structural and Electronic Complexities of a Sulfur‐Bridged Di‐Iron Complex Composed of Mono‐ and Di‐Nitrosyl Units

The delocalized, thermodynamically stable cation, [(N 2 S 2 )Fe(NO)•Fe(NO) 2 ] + , an adduct of mono-nitrosyl and dinitrosyl iron units, is analyzed to address the unusual stability of the sulfur-bridged diiron complex in its three overall redox levels, +, 0, and −. X-ray diffraction and myriad spectroscopic techniques probe products of sequential electron uptake in the corresponding neutral and anionic species. Conundrums include unified blueshifts of the overall 3-band, ν(NO), pattern with added electrons. One-electron reduction changes the anti-ferromagnetically coupled, S = 0, cationic diiron species to the neutral analog, S = ½, with unpaired spin mainly localized on the MNIU, which decreases its ∠Fe–N–O angle by 10 degrees in response to the extra electron density. Subsequent reduction to the anionic species, S = 1, involves a major geometric change at the MNIU, which moves the Fe in {Fe(NO)} 8 out of the N 2 S 2 plane. Site-specific 15 N labeling of nitrosyl in the MNIU confirms the IR analysis and shows rapid NO exchange between the MNIU/DNIU (mono-nitrosyl iron unit/dinitrosyl iron unit) pairs during its synthesis at RT. Mössbauer spectroscopy, S K-edge XAS, and molecular orbital calculations confirm the ability of NO and the versatility of sulfur bridges to buffer and distribute electrons, a key to their major importance in metalloenzymes.

Lewis Acid‐Activated Charge Trapping in Dielectric Polymers for Superior High‐Temperature Electrostatic Energy Storage

Dielectric polymer capacitors are essential for electrostatic energy storage but suffer from charge transport-induced energy losses, particularly at elevated temperatures where thermally activated charge carriers exacerbate conduction. Conventional mitigation strategies rely on introducing heterogeneous interfaces to create charge traps, complicating scalable film fabrication. A homogeneous molecular trapping mechanism would circumvent these complexities, yet remains underexplored. Herein, a charge trapping strategy is devised by modifying the lowest occupied molecular orbitals of dielectric polymers through Lewis acid-base adduct formation. The use of tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron (BCF) as a Lewis acidic molecular additive introduces deeper charge traps in commercial polyetherimide (PEI) while retaining homogeneity. With only 0.5 wt.% loading, the PEI-BCF film exhibits greatly improved breakdown strength, achieving an ultrahigh discharged energy density of 7.3 J cm-3 with excellent cycle stability at 200 °C. This work establishes a facile molecular approach to decoupling charge trapping from heterogeneous interfaces, enabling high-energy-density polymer capacitors operable under extreme thermal conditions.

Synthesis of α,β‐ and β‐Unsaturated Acids and Hydroxy Acids by Tandem Oxidation, Epoxidation, and Hydrolysis/Hydrogenation of Bioethanol Derivatives

Abstract We report a reaction platform for the synthesis of three different high‐value specialty chemical building blocks starting from bio‐ethanol, which might have an important impact in the implementation of biorefineries. First, oxidative dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde generates an aldehyde‐containing stream active for the production of C 4 aldehydes via base‐catalyzed aldol‐condensation. Then, the resulting C 4 adduct is selectively converted into crotonic acid via catalytic aerobic oxidation (62 % yield). Using a sequential epoxidation and hydrogenation of crotonic acid leads to 29 % yield of β‐hydroxy acid (3‐hydroxybutanoic acid). By controlling the pH of the reaction media, it is possible to hydrolyze the oxirane moiety leading to 21 % yield of α,β‐dihydroxy acid (2,3‐dihydroxybutanoic acid). Crotonic acid, 3‐hydroxybutanoic acid, and 2,3‐dihydroxybutanoic acid are archetypal specialty chemicals used in the synthesis of polyvinyl‐co‐unsaturated acids resins, pharmaceutics, and bio‐degradable/ ‐compatible polymers, respectively.

Tailoring Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction on Copper by Reactive Ionic Liquid and Native Hydrogen Bond Donors

Abstract Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR) on copper (Cu) shows promise for higher‐value products beyond CO. However, challenges such as the limited CO 2 solubility, high overpotentials, and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in aqueous electrolytes hinder the practical realization. We propose a functionalized ionic liquid (IL) which generates ion‐CO 2 adducts and a hydrogen bond donor (HBD) upon CO 2 absorption to modulate CO 2 RR on Cu in a non‐aqueous electrolyte. As revealed by transient voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and in situ surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) complemented with image charge augmented quantum‐mechanical/molecular mechanics (IC‐QM/MM) computations, a unique microenvironment is constructed. In this microenvironment, the catalytic activity is primarily governed by the IL and HBD concentrations; former controlling the double layer thickness and the latter modulating the local proton availability. This translates to ample CO 2 availability, reduced overpotential, and suppressed HER where C 4 products are obtained. This study deepens the understanding of electrolyte effects in CO 2 RR and the role of IL ions towards electrocatalytic microenvironment design.

Lewis Acid Supported Nickel Nitrenoids

Abstract Metalation of the polynucleating ligand F,tbs LH 6 (1,3,5‐C 6 H 9 (NC 6 H 3 −4‐F−2‐NSiMe 2 t Bu) 3 ) with two equivalents of Zn(N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) 2 affords the dinuclear product ( F,tbs LH 2 )Zn 2 ( 1 ), which can be further deprotonated to yield ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Li 2 (OEt 2 ) 4 ( 2 ). Transmetalation of 2 with NiCl 2 (py) 2 yields the heterometallic, trinuclear cluster ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(py) ( 3 ). Reduction of 3 with KC 8 affords [KC 222 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni] ( 4 ) which features a monovalent Ni centre. Addition of 1‐adamantyl azide to 4 generates the bridging μ 3 ‐nitrenoid adduct [K(THF) 3 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 ‐NAd)] ( 5 ). EPR spectroscopy reveals that the anionic cluster possesses a doublet ground state ( S = ). Cyclic voltammetry of 5 reveals two fully reversible redox events. The dianionic nitrenoid [K 2 (THF) 9 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 ‐NAd)] ( 6 ) was isolated and characterized while the neutral redox isomer was observed to undergo both intra‐ and intermolecular H‐atom abstraction processes. Ni K‐edge XAS studies suggest a divalent oxidation state for the Ni centres in both the monoanionic and dianionic [Zn 2 Ni] nitrenoid complexes. However, DFT analysis suggests Ni‐borne oxidation for 5 .

Catching Fullerenes: Synthesis of Molecular Nanogloves

Abstract Herein, we report the synthesis of a new series of rigid, all meta ‐phenylene, conjugated deep‐cavity molecules, displaying high binding affinity towards buckyballs. A facile synthetic approach with an overall combined yield of approximately 53% in the last two steps has been developed using a templating strategy that combines the general structure of resorcin[4]arene and [12]cyclo‐ meta ‐phenylene. These two moieties are covalently linked via four acetal bonds, resulting in a glove‐like architecture. 1 H NMR titration experiments reveal fullerene binding affinities ( K a ) exceeding ≥10 6 M −1 . The size complementarity between fullerenes and these scaffolds maximizes CH⋯π and π⋯π interactions, and their host:guest adduct resembles a ball in a glove, hence their name as nanogloves. Fullerene recognition is tested by suspending carbon soot in a solution of nanoglove in 1,1,2,2‐tetrachloroethane, where more than a dozen fullerenes are observed, ranging from C 60 to C 96 .

Lewis Acidity of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil System

Abstract While SbCl 3 is typically inert toward oxidation by ortho ‐quinones, we use o ‐chloranil to show that the outcome of such reactions may be altered by the presence of a donor such as triphenylphosphine oxide, which readily traps the SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon (cat Cl = tetrachlorocatecholate) in the form of the corresponding adduct Ph 3 PO→SbCl 3 (cat Cl ). The same reaction in the presence of a chloride salt affords the corresponding antimonate anion [Cl 4 Sb(cat Cl )] − . Computational studies indicate that the putative SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon has a higher chloride ion affinity than SbCl 5 , suggesting significant Lewis acidity. This property is further demonstrated by the use of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil system for both THF polymerization and a Friedel–Crafts‐type alkylation of benzene using 1‐fluorooctane. Finally, the reaction of E ‐stilbene with o ‐chloranil in the presence of SbCl 3 affords the corresponding benzodioxene, suggesting that SbCl 3 may also operate as a redox‐active catalyst.

Protonation of CH 3 N 3 and CF 3 N 3 in Superacids: Isolation and Structural Characterization of Long‐Lived Methyl‐ and Trifluoromethylamino Diazonium Ions

Abstract The methylamino diazonium cations [CH 3 N(H)N 2 ] + and [CF 3 N(H)N 2 ] + were prepared as their low‐temperature stable [AsF 6 ] − salts by protonation of azidomethane and azidotrifluoromethane in superacidic systems. They were characterized by NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Unequivocal proof of the protonation site was obtained by the crystal structures of both salts, confirming the formation of alkylamino diazonium ions. The Lewis adducts CH 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 and CF 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 were also prepared and characterized by low‐temperature NMR and Raman spectroscopy, and also by X‐ray structure determination for CH 3 N 3 ⋅AsF 5 . Electronic structure calculations were performed to provide additional insights. Attempted electrophilic amination of aromatics such as benzene and toluene with methyl‐ and trifluoromethylamino diazonium ions were unsuccessful.

Active Sites of Cobalt Phthalocyanine in Electrocatalytic CO 2 Reduction to Methanol

Many metal coordination compounds catalyze CO 2 electroreduction to CO, but cobalt phthalocyanine hybridized with conductive carbon such as carbon nanotubes is currently the only one that can generate methanol. The underlying structure–reactivity correlation and reaction mechanism desperately demand elucidation. Here, in this study, we report the first in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization, combined with ex situ spectroscopic and electrocatalytic measurements, to study CoPc-catalyzed CO 2 reduction to methanol. Molecular dispersion of CoPc on CNT surfaces, as evidenced by the observed electronic interaction between the two, is crucial to fast electron transfer to the active sites and multi-electron CO 2 reduction. CO, the key intermediate in the CO 2 -to-methanol pathway, is found to be labile on the active site, which necessitates a high local concentration in the microenvironment to compete with CO 2 for active sites and promote methanol production. A comparison of the electrocatalytic performance of structurally related porphyrins indicates that the bridging aza-N atoms of the Pc macrocycle are critical components of the CoPc active site that produces methanol. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy identifies the active site as Co(I) and supports an increasingly non-centrosymmetric Co coordination environment at negative applied potential, likely due to the formation of a Co−CO adduct during the catalysis.

Iron‐Catalyzed Intermolecular C−H Amination Assisted by an Isolated Iron‐Imido Radical Intermediate

Here we report the use of a base metal complex [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe(OEt 2 )] (1-OEt 2 ) ( tBu pyrpyrr 2 2− =3,5-tBu 2 -bis(pyrrolyl)pyridine) as a catalyst for intermolecular amination of C sp3 −H bonds of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (2 a) using 2,4,6-trimethyl phenyl azide (3 a) as the nitrene source. The reaction is complete within one hour at 80 °C using as low as 2 mol % 1-OEt 2 with control in selectivity for single C−H amination versus double C−H amination. Catalytic C−H amination reactions can be extended to other substrates such as cyclohexadiene and xanthene derivatives and can tolerate a variety of aryl azides having methyl groups in both ortho positions. Under stoichiometric conditions the imido radical species [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{=N(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )] (1-imido) can be isolated in 56 % yield, and spectroscopic, magnetometric, and computational studies confirmed it to be an S = 1 Fe IV complex. Complex 1-imido reacts with 2 a to produce the ferrous aniline adduct [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{NH(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )(C 14 H 11 )}] (1-aniline) in 45 % yield. Lastly, it was found that complexes 1-imido and 1-aniline are both competent intermediates in catalytic intermolecular C−H amination.

Latent Catalysis as a Platform for Accessing Diverse Material Properties in Vat Photopolymerization 3D Printing

Vat photopolymerization (VP) 3D printing is an attractive strategy to manufacture customized polymer parts. The properties of printed materials are limited by the need to employ a low viscosity liquid resin and achieve rapid polymerization kinetics. To circumvent this limitation, dual‐cure methods have been developed using reagents embedded in the liquid resin formulation; however, the reagent‐based approach requires the discovery and optimization of new chemistry for each desired material. Here, in this work, we demonstrate a catalytic, dual‐cure platform that enables access to both Nylon‐6 and polyester interpenetrating networks through VP 3D printing under a universal approach. Structure–reactivity relationships of the latent NHC catalysts led to the identification of a magnesium chloride–NHC adduct as a latent catalyst that is orthogonal to radical polymerization and can be unmasked at elevated temperatures post‐printing to initiate ring‐opening polymerization of lactones and lactams. This strategy results in access to semicrystalline materials, which are a challenging morphology to access via VP 3D printing, that have attractive mechanical properties and can be printed at high resolution. This work represents the first photochemical‐based 3D printing of Nylon‐based materials and demonstrates the value of catalytic approaches to access new material properties in VP 3D printing.

Small Molecule Activation with Intramolecular “Inverse” Frustrated Lewis Pairs

The intramolecular “inverse” frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) of general formula 1-BR 2 -2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=N]-C 6 H 4 (3-6) [BR 2 = BMes 2 (3), BC 12 H 8 , (4), BBN (5), BBNO (6)] were synthesized and structurally characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. Furthermore, these novel types of pre-organized FLPs, featuring strongly basic guanidino units rigidly linked to weakly Lewis acidic boryl moieties via an ortho-phenylene linker, are capable of activating H-H, C-H, N-H, O-H, Si-H, B-H and C=O bonds. 4 and 5 deprotonated terminal alkynes to form the zwitterionic borates 1-(RC≡C-BR 2 )-2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=NH]-C 6 H 4 (R = Ph, H) and reacted with ammonia, BnNH 2 and pyrrolidine, to generate the adducts 1-(R 2 HN→BR 2 )-2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=NH]-C 6 H 4 , where the N-H functionality is activated by intramolecular H-bond interactions. In addition, 5 was found to rapidly add across the double bond of H 2 CO, PhCHO and PhNCO to form cyclic zwitterionic guanidinium borates in excellent yields. Likewise, 5 is capable of cleaving H 2 , HBPin and PhSiH 3 to form various amino boranes. Collectively, the results demonstrate that these new types of intramolecular FLPs featuring weakly Lewis acidic boryl and strongly basic guanidino moieties are as potent as conventional intramolecular FLPs with strongly Lewis acidic units in activating small molecules.

Revealing the Influence of Diverse Secondary Metal Cations on Redox-Active Palladium Complexes

Incorporation of redox-inactive metals into redox-active complexes and catalysts attracts attention for engendering new reactivity modes, but this strategy has not been extensively investigated beyond the first-row of the transition metals. In this report the isolation and characterization of the first series of heterobimetallic complexes of palladium with mono-, di-, and tri-valent redox-inactive metal ions are reported. A Reinhoudt-type heteroditopic ligand with a salen-derived [N 2 ,O 2 ] binding site for Pd and a crown-ether-derived [O 6 ] site has been used to prepare isolable adducts of the Lewis acidic redox-inactive metal ions (M n+ ). Comprehensive data from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveal distinctive trends in the structural properties of the heterobimetallic species, including an uncommon dependence of the Pd … M distance on Lewis acidity. The reorganization energy associated with reduction of the heterobimetallic species is strongly modulated by Lewis acidity, with the slowest heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics associated with the strongest incorporated Lewis acids. This hitherto unexplored reorganization energy penalty for electron transfer contrasts with prior thermodynamic studies, revealing that kinetic parameters should be considered in studies of reactivity involving heterobimetallic species.

CO 2 Activation with Manganese Tricarbonyl Complexes through an H–Atom Responsive Benzimidazole Ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two manganese tricarbonyl complexes, Mn I (HL)(CO) 3 Br (1 a-Br) and Mn I (MeL)(CO) 3 Br (1 b-Br) (where HL=2-(2’-pyridyl)benzimidazole; MeL=1-methyl-2-(2’-pyridy)benzimidazole) and assayed their electrocatalytic properties for CO 2 reduction. A redox-active pyridine benzimidazole ancillary ligand in complex 1 a-Br displayed unique hydrogen atom transfer ability to facilitate electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion at a markedly lower reduction potential than that observed for 1 b-Br. Notably, a one-electron reduction of 1 a-Br yields a structurally characterized H-bonded binuclear Mn(I) adduct (2 a’) rather than the typically observed Mn(0)-Mn(0) dimer, suggesting a novel method for CO 2 activation. Furthermore, combining advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic, and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, we demonstrate the use of an H-atom responsive ligand may reveal an alternative, low-energy pathway for CO 2 activation by an earth-abundant metal complex catalyst.
