Aerospace medicine and biology. an annotated bibliography, 1954 literature, volume iii

While this third volume of the bibliography was in preparation, a number of changes and new developments took place which, it is hoped, will be instrumental in furthering the bibliography's main objective: to provide as rapidly as possible comprehensive coverage of the aerospace-medical and bio-astronautical literature. To begin with, it will be noted that the title of the compilation has been changed from Aviation Medicine to Aerospace Medicine and Biology. This will bring into relief the fact that the general subject scope of the bibliography has been expanded to include new areas of interest in space-medical and space-biological research. Thus, to the subject fields heretofore covered by the bibliography (a full listing of which may be found in the Preface to Volume 2) new ones have been added, such as Biological Rhythms, Biological Orientation, Closed Ecological Systems, Physiological and Psychological Effects of Heat, Cold, Isolation, Restraint, and many others. Another important change was administrative in nature. Sponsorship of the bibliography for the fiscal year 1959/60 was taken over by the U. S. Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA), the U. S. Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Defense Research Board of Canada. Under a substantially increased budget, the Library of Congress was enabled to produce two volumes during the fiscal year. The Library also agreed to prepare selected abstracts from the current aerospace and bio-astronautic literature, which are published monthly in Aerospace Medicine, the official organ of the Aerospace Medical Association.*) If the present rate of production can be maintained, it will be possible to bring the bibliography up to date within about three years. In format, style, and arrangement, this volume follows closely the preceding ones. References are arranged alphabetically by author; abstracts are informative; and full bibliographic information is provided, including foreign and translated titles, volume and issue numbers, place of publication (if foreign), inclusive paging, full dates, and library call numbers or other location symbols. While the bulk of the publication is devoted to journal articles, reports, and monographs published during the year 1954, items published in 1952 or 1953 not included in the preceding volumes have been incorporated in this volume. For quick identification, the publication years of these off-year references have been printed next to the first author's name. As before, cumulated corporate and secondary author and subject indexes are included, the latter being revised and enlarged considerably, in keeping with the over-all expansion of subject scope.

High Energy Propellants: A Continuing Bibliography

Through its Continuing Bibliography Program, NASA will prepare and distribute a series of bibliographies devoted to specific subjects in the aerospace field. The subjects have been selected because of their significant relationship to current developments in the space program, and because of a clearly established interest in them on the part of aerospace specialists. In order to assure that future information will become available in an orderly manner, each Continuing Bibliography will be updated periodically in the form of supplements which can be appended to the original edition. High Energy Propellants , NASA-SP-7002, is the first publication to appear under this program. It presents a selection of annotated references to unclassified reports and journal articles announced in Technical Publications Announcements (TPA) , Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR) , and International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA) . Prime emphasis is given to those references which are concerned with research and development studies on solid, liquid, and hybrid propellants and oxidizers, but the bibliography also provides extensive coverage of such related topics as propellant handling and storage, combustion characteristics, toxicity, and hazards and safety measures. Each entry in the bibliography consists of a citation and an abstract. The listing of entries is arranged in two major groups: all report literature references are contained in the first group and are subdivided according to their date of announcement in TPA and STAR ; the second group includes all published literature references subdivided according to their date of announcement in IAA . All reports and articles cited were introduced into the NASA Information System during the period January 1962-March, 1964.

Software for aerospace education: A bibliography, 2nd edition

This is the second aerospace education software bibliography to be published by the NASA Educational Technology Branch in Washington, DC. Unlike many software bibliographies, this bibliography does not evaluate and grade software according to its quality and value to the classroom, nor does it make any endorsements or warrant scientific accuracy. Rather, it describes software, its subject, approach, and technical details. This bibliography is intended as a convenience to educators. The specific software included represents replies to more than 300 queries to software producers for aerospace education programs.

Bibliography of NACA and Other Reports on Air Inlets and Internal Flows

At the suggestion of the Subcommittee on Internal Flow, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics has assembled this bibliography on air inlet and internal flow data for aircraft. It was felt that the purpose of this publication, to furnish the engineer and researcher with a listing of theoretical and experimental studies related directly and indirectly to the field of internal flows, could be served best by presenting some of the more pertinent and interesting references. Thus this bibliography is not complete in its listing of internal flow reports from the NACA or from other sources. The works referenced here are, for the most part, those published before January 1948. To aid the investigator in finding references, the bibliography has been indexed according to subject matter. NACA reports and reports from other sources are grouped separately. The subject breakdown used may be found in the table of contents on the preceding pages.

Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems: A Comprehensive, Annotated Bibliography

This bibliography contains 301 entries. Results are reported of recent studies aimed at increasing the research capabilities of magnetic suspension and balance systems; e.g., increasing force and torque capability, increasing angle of attack capability, and increasing overall system reliability. The problem is addressed of scaling from the relatively small size of existing systems to much larger sizes. The purpose of the bibliography is to provide an up-to-date list of publications that might be helpful to persons interested in magnetic suspension and balance systems for use in wind tunnels. The arrangement is generally chronological by date of presentation. However, papers presented at conferences or meetings are placed under dates of presentation. The numbers assigned to many of the citations have been changed from those used in the previous bibliography. This has been done in order to allow outdated citations to be removed and some recently discovered older works to be included in their proper chronological order. Author, source, and subject indexes are included in order to increase the usefulness of this compilation.

The UNO Aviation Monograph Series: Aviation Security: An Annotated Bibliography of Responses to the Gore Commission

This monograph is a companion to UNOAI Monograph 96-2, "The Image of Airport Security: An Annotated Bibliography," compiled in June 1996. The White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security, headed by Vice President Al Gore, was formed as a result of the TWA Flight 800 crash in August 1996. The Commission's final report included 31 recommendations addressed toward aviation security. The recommendations were cause for security issues to be revisited in the media and by the aviation industry. These developments necessitated the need for an updated bibliography to review the resulting literature. Many of the articles were written in response to the recommendations made by the Gore Commission. "Aviation Security: An Annotated Bibliography of Responses to the Gore Commission" is the result of this need.

Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems: A Selected, Annotated Bibliography

This publication, containing 206 entries, supersedes an earlier bibliography, NASA TM-80225 (April 1980). Citations for 18 documents have been added in this updated version. Most of the additions report results of recent studies aimed at increasing the research capabilities of magnetic suspension and balance systems, e.g., increasing force and torque capability, increasing angle of attack capability, and increasing overall system reliability. Some of the additions address the problem of scaling from the relatively small size of existing systems to much larger sizes. The purpose of this bibliography is to provide an up-to-date list of publications that might be helpful to persons interested in magnetic suspension and balance systems for use in wind tunnels. The arrangement is generally chronological by date of publication. However, papers presented at conferences or meetings are placed under dates of presentation. The numbers assigned to many of the citations have been changed from those used in the previous bibliography. This has been done in order to allow outdated citations to be removed and some recently discovered older works to be included in their proper chronological order.

Spacecraft Fire Safety 1956 to 1999: An Annotated Bibliography

Knowledge of fire safety in spacecraft has resulted from over 50 years of investigation and experience in space flight. Current practices and procedures for the operation of the Space Transportation System (STS) shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS) have been developed from this expertise, much of which has been documented in various reports. Extending manned space exploration from low Earth orbit to lunar or Martian habitats and beyond will require continued research in microgravity combustion and fire protection in low gravity. This descriptive bibliography has been produced to document and summarize significant work in the area of spacecraft fire safety that was published between 1956 and July 1999. Although some important work published in the late 1990s may be missing, these citations as well as work since 2000 can generally be found in Web-based resources that are easily accessed and searched. In addition to the citation, each reference includes a short description of the contents and conclusions of the article. The bibliography contains over 800 citations that are cross-referenced both by topic and the authors and editors. There is a DVD that accompanies this bibliography (available by request from the Center for Aerospace Information) containing the full-text articles of selected citations as well as an electronic version of this report that has these citations as active links to their corresponding full-text article.
