Biomarker Sensors and Method for Multi-Color Imaging and Processing of Single-Molecule Life Signatures

The invention is a device including array of active regions for use in reacting one or more species in at least two of the active regions in a sequential process, e.g., sequential reactions. The device has a transparent substrate member, which has a surface region and a silane material overlying the surface region. A first active region overlies a first portion of the silane material. The first region has a first dimension of less than 1 micron in size and has first molecules capable of binding to the first portion of the silane material. A second active region overlies a second portion of the silane material. The second region has a second dimension of less than 1 micron in size, second molecules capable of binding to the second portion of the active region, and a spatial distance separates the first active region and the second active region.

Defining the Relationship Between Biomarkers of Oxidation and Inflammatory Stress and the Risk for Atherosclerosis in Astronauts During and After Long-Duration Spaceflight

Future human space travel will consist primarily of long-duration missions onboard the International Space Station (ISS) or exploration-class missions to Mars, its moons, or nearby asteroids. These missions will expose astronauts to increased risk of oxidative and inflammatory damage from a variety of sources, including radiation, psychological stress, reduced physical activity, diminished nutritional status, and hyperoxic exposure during extravehicular activity. Evidence exists that increased oxidative damage and inflammation can accelerate the development of atherosclerosis.

Biomarker Pigment Divinyl Chlorophyll a as a Tracer of Water Masses?

The ecological preferences of different Phytoplankton types drive their temporal and spatial distributions, reflecting their dependence on certain temperature ranges, light levels, nutrient availability and other environmental gradients. Hence, some phytoplankton taxa can be used as water mass tracers (biotracers).

A Brief Review of Chaotropic vs. Kosmotropic Salts on the Degree of Saturation of Membrane Fatty Acids: Implications for Preservation of Environmental Biomarkers

Water activity is well known to have a significant impact on habitability, due to the presence of salts. However, salt composition is also important for habitability, as it can impact microbial activity and biomolecular interactions since certain salts are known to disrupt hydrogen bonding. Chaotropic agents disrupt hydrogen bonding in aqueous solutions leading to increased entropy (chaos) whereas kosmotropic agents are compounds that promote hydrogen bonding (order). The Hofmeister series (Fig. 1) shows the ordering of ions in terms of their ability to stabilize and induce precipitation or aggregation of proteins.
