Asymptotic residual pump transmission characteristics in laser-induced stimulated Brillouin scattering

The considered asymptotic relationship is investigated and an expression is sought for the slope of the curve representing the relation between the residual fractional transmitted pump and the pump excitation in backward-traveling-wave amplification. It is found that the characteristic -2 slope of the oscillation curve is a unique property. Rapid exponential decay may very well constitute an inherent limiting factor for efficient energy conversion.

Tunneling near the peaks of potential barriers - Consequences of higher-order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin corrections

The quantum-mechanical tunneling transmission coefficient is derived for energies near the peak of a general potential barrier, to fourth order in the WKB approximation, using a method based on an eighth-order Taylor expansion of the potential near the peak. The result agrees with contour-integral formulations of WKB tunneling. For the Poeschl-Teller potential the WKB series converges rapidly to the known exact transmission coefficient. Higher-order WKB corrections may be important in attempts to determine the internuclear potential by inversion using low-energy fusion cross-section data.

Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method in the Bargmann representation

It is demonstrated that the Bargmann representation of quantum mechanics is ideally suited for semiclassical analysis, using as an example the WKB method applied to the bound-state problem in a single well of one degree of freedom. For the harmonic oscillator, this WKB method trivially gives the exact eigenfunctions in addition to the exact eigenvalues. For an anharmonic well, a self-consistent variational choice of the representation greatly improves the accuracy of the semiclassical ground state. Also, a simple change of scale illuminates the relationship of semiclassical versus linear perturbative expansions, allowing a variety of multidimensional extensions.

Gas temperature and density measurements based on spectrally resolved Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering

The use of molecular Rayleigh scattering for measurements of gas density and temperature is evaluated. The technique used is based on the measurement of the spectrum of the scattered light, where both temperature and density are determined from the spectral shape. Planar imaging of Rayleigh scattering from air using a laser light sheet is evaluated for ambient conditions. The Cramer-Rao lower bounds for the shot-noise limited density and temperature measurement uncertainties are calculated for an ideal optical spectrum analyzer and for a planar mirror Fabry-Perot interferometer used in a static, imaging mode. With this technique, a single image of the Rayleigh scattered light can be analyzed to obtain density (or pressure) and temperature. Experimental results are presented for planar measurements taken in a heated air stream.
