Systems Development, Data Mining, and Knowledge Discovery

The primary role of the Technical Integration Office is to provide technical solutions and services to different branches at KSC (Kennedy Space Center) and NASA program customers. The Technical Integration Office helps support KSC's operational needs by providing services such as digital connectivity, data center services, modelling and simulation tools, and communication video services. To learn the necessary technology and processes for my internship, I am working on two projects: learning C# (C Sharp programming language) with SQL and developing requirements for a PX (Communication and Public Engagement) inventory management system. To learn how to efficiently program with C#, my mentor assigned me to complete a sports informatics application that would let users discover facts and rules about various sports. The sports informatics application comes with search capabilities, report generating features, rule lists that users can modify, and diagrams for various sport strategies. To further build upon this project, I also developed a sport simulation game with the application. Once I begin more SQL-based projects, I will have the opportunity to learn how to manage databases and link SQL servers with C# programs. To develop requirements for the inventory management system, I have met with PX representatives and toured their storage facilities to see how they organize and store their items and equipment. I will also be meeting with representatives from the budget office to find out what information must be in a system budget report. The main components the system must have are customer request management, a search feature for items and equipment, report generation capabilities, and automated system warnings when item quantities reach or go below administrator-specified threshold levels. I have drafted questions and shall statements that will ultimately become part of the inventory management system requirements document.

Software for Engineering Simulations of a Spacecraft

Spacecraft Engineering Simulation II (SES II) is a C-language computer program for simulating diverse aspects of operation of a spacecraft characterized by either three or six degrees of freedom. A functional model in SES can include a trajectory flight plan; a submodel of a flight computer running navigational and flight-control software; and submodels of the environment, the dynamics of the spacecraft, and sensor inputs and outputs. SES II features a modular, object-oriented programming style. SES II supports event-based simulations, which, in turn, create an easily adaptable simulation environment in which many different types of trajectories can be simulated by use of the same software. The simulation output consists largely of flight data. SES II can be used to perform optimization and Monte Carlo dispersion simulations. It can also be used to perform simulations for multiple spacecraft. In addition to its generic simulation capabilities, SES offers special capabilities for space-shuttle simulations: for this purpose, it incorporates submodels of the space-shuttle dynamics and a C-language version of the guidance, navigation, and control components of the space-shuttle flight software.

SSL Freeform Generator v1.00

The Orion spacecraft utilizes a system of Compact Unique Identifiers (CUIs) to identify telemetry measurements in the process of communicating with the ground. While avionic systems are still in development, simulation of telemetric data must be used for the development of dependent systems. The SuperScript Language (SSL) developed by Honeywell Aerospace provides users a programming language for simulation of this data. The use of tools that provide SSL generation capabilities at a higher level allows for faster and more efficient generation of simulation waveforms. Previous SSL Generator implementations such as Orion Scripted Interface Generator (OrionSIG) relied on software supported routines to generate simulation points for the SSL scripts. This provided relevant simulation capabilities, but was reduced in flexibility by the available software routines available. For this approach, software supported routines have been entirely dropped. Rather, the user is required to enter their own simulation waveform input. This allows arbitrarily complex functions to be utilized simulated with maximum degree of freedom for the user.: The idea for this version of the SSL Generator was a mapping of arbitrary waveforms to Orion CUI telemetry data. The SSL Generator implemented offers a higher degree of freedom to the user than previous versions while attempting to maintain abstraction from the underlying SSL script and the Orion CUI data types. As such, many mappings of waveforms to CUIs will simply not work. Certain implementation decisions were made to minimize the damage caused by these unintended side-effects, such as saturation of values exceeding the maximum or minimum bounds of the data type. Other details, such as signed values being represented in unsigned data types, present problems which cant be fixed to an acceptable degree of intended behavior without user input. Awareness of the limitations of all layers of the software stack will increase the productivity of the end-user.

Improvement and extension of a radar forest backscattering model

Research to-date has focused on modeling development and programming based on model components proposed during the past several months and research progress made by the Simonett team. The model components and programs (in C language under UNIX) finished to date are summarized. These model components may help explain the contributions of various vegetation structural components to the attenuation and backscattering of vegetated surfaces to extract useful data concerning forest stands and their underlying surfaces for both the seawater-on and seawater-off.

Open Loop Simulation

My project is designing a flight control program utilizing 'C' language. It consists of paths made up of fixed radius arcs and straight lines. Arcs will be defined by a center, a radius and turn angle. Straight lines will be defined by an end way point and an inbound course. Way points will be pre-defined such that the location of the end of each leg accurately matches the beginning of the next leg. The simulation paths will closely match paths normally flown by the Transport System Research Vehicle (TSRV), but will necessarily be defined identically in terms of type and number of way points.

How Difficult is it to Add 1? A Pedagogical Example of How Theory of Computing May be Useful

We show that while adding two generic b-bit integers requires = b bit operations, adding 1 to an integer requires, on average, only 2 bit operations. This fact explains why the operation of adding 1 is often separately hardware supported, and why this operation is often separately described in high-level programming languages like C++. This result shows that theoretical analysis can help in deciding which operations must be hardware supported, and thus, hopefully, will help in designing faster computers.

Automating Traceability for Generated Software Artifacts

Program synthesis automatically derives programs from specifications of their behavior. One advantage of program synthesis, as opposed to manual coding, is that there is a direct link between the specification and the derived program. This link is, however, not very fine-grained: it can be best characterized as Program is-derived- from Specification. When the generated program needs to be understood or modified, more $ne-grained linking is useful. In this paper, we present a novel technique for automatically deriving traceability relations between parts of a specification and parts of the synthesized program. The technique is very lightweight and works -- with varying degrees of success - for any process in which one artifact is automatically derived from another. We illustrate the generality of the technique by applying it to two kinds of automatic generation: synthesis of Kalman Filter programs from speci3cations using the Aut- oFilter program synthesis system, and generation of assembly language programs from C source code using the GCC C compilel: We evaluate the effectiveness of the technique in the latter application.

Analyzing Spacecraft Telecommunication Systems

Multi-Mission Telecom Analysis Tool (MMTAT) is a C-language computer program for analyzing proposed spacecraft telecommunication systems. MMTAT utilizes parameterized input and computational models that can be run on standard desktop computers to perform fast and accurate analyses of telecommunication links. MMTAT is easy to use and can easily be integrated with other software applications and run as part of almost any computational simulation. It is distributed as either a stand-alone application program with a graphical user interface or a linkable library with a well-defined set of application programming interface (API) calls. As a stand-alone program, MMTAT provides both textual and graphical output. The graphs make it possible to understand, quickly and easily, how telecommunication performance varies with variations in input parameters. A delimited text file that can be read by any spreadsheet program is generated at the end of each run. The API in the linkable-library form of MMTAT enables the user to control simulation software and to change parameters during a simulation run. Results can be retrieved either at the end of a run or by use of a function call at any time step.

Mu2e experiment: Simulation of the Production Target

The Mu2e experiment will search for coherent, neutrinoless conversion of muons to elections in an aluminum stopping target. A simulation program is used to experiment and design the production target of the Mu2e experiment. The module uses programing languages and libraries to work. The program called the Offline uses C++ as the programing language in the module. To construct the simulation, the Geant4 library constructs shapes and uses them in the simulation program, ROOT. The offline program simplifies the creation of the tube by organizing them into parameter objects and nesting them with other variables required to construct the tube-like center point, material, or if it is allowed to conflict with other solids. The parameter varies for every solid tube. The geometry file uploads the parameters by declaring and organizing the parameters in C++ using the configuration tools. The author describes the development and the future of this project.
