Binary single-sideband phase-modulated communication systems.

Single-sideband phase modulation (SSBPM), in which a signal is simultaneously phase- and amplitude-modulated by a signal and its Hilbert transform, is shown to be suboptimum for binary signaling in white Gaussian noise. An alternative single-sideband technique based on the properties of binary suppressed-carrier phase modulation is proposed and shown to give performance equivalent to the double-sideband version.

A Comparison of Potential IM-CW Lidar Modulation Techniques for ASCENDS CO2 Column Measurements From Space

Global atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements through the Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days, and Seasons (ASCENDS) Decadal Survey recommended space mission are critical for improving our understanding of CO2 sources and sinks. IM-CW (Intensity Modulated Continuous Wave) lidar techniques are investigated as a means of facilitating CO2 measurements from space to meet the ASCENDS science requirements. In previous laboratory and flight experiments we have successfully used linear swept frequency modulation to discriminate surface lidar returns from intermediate aerosol and cloud contamination. Furthermore, high accuracy and precision ranging to the surface as well as to the top of intermediate clouds, which is a requirement for the inversion of the CO2 column-mixing ratio from the instrument optical depth measurements, has been demonstrated with the linear swept frequency modulation technique. We are concurrently investigating advanced techniques to help improve the auto-correlation properties of the transmitted waveform implemented through physical hardware to make cloud rejection more robust in special restricted scenarios. Several different carrier based modulation techniques are compared including orthogonal linear swept, orthogonal non-linear swept, and Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK). Techniques are investigated that reduce or eliminate sidelobes. These techniques have excellent auto-correlation properties while possessing a finite bandwidth (by way of a new cyclic digital filter), which will reduce bias error in the presence of multiple scatterers. Our analyses show that the studied modulation techniques can increase the accuracy of CO2 column measurements from space. A comparison of various properties such as signal to noise ratio (SNR) and time-bandwidth product are discussed.

Phase Length Optical Phase-Locked-Loop Sensor

The invention is a device that provides a high resolution measurement of the change in optical phase length from the device optical system source to an optical reflector. The invention consists of a optical phase locked loop that uses a laser beam as a carrier of an intensity modulated energy source. The novelty of the invention appears to lie in the overall combination of elements which provide high resolution without loss of wide dynamic range. The invention does not depend on coherent reflection from a target, and thus can measure targets that do not have special preparation or corner reflectors. The use of carrier modulation achieves high resolution without the problems of high speed pulse duration systems. Thus the invention has the advantages of simplicity, low cost, and small size without sacrificing resolution.

The 'Brick Wall' radio loss approximation and the performance of strong channel codes for deep space applications at high data rates

In order to evaluate performance of strong channel codes in presence of imperfect carrier phase tracking for residual carrier BPSK modulation in this paper an approximate 'brick wall' model is developed which is independent of the channel code type for high data rates. It is shown that this approximation is reasonably accurate (less than 0.7dB for low FERs for (1784,1/6) code and less than 0.35dB for low FERs for (5920,1/6) code). Based on the approximation's accuracy, it is concluded that the effects of imperfect carrier tracking are more or less independent of the channel code type for strong channel codes. Therefore, the advantage that one strong channel code has over another with perfect carrier tracking translates to nearly the same advantage under imperfect carrier tracking conditions. This will allow the link designers to incorporate projected channel code performance of strong channel codes into their design tables without worrying about their behavior in the face of imperfect carrier phase tracking.

Transmitting Reference Radio Signals On Two Optical Carriers

Radio-frequency reference signal used to modulate two optical carriers at transmitter. Dispersion in optical-fiber or free-space transmission medium, used to advantage in receiver to measure and compensate for phase and frequency fluctuations induced by fluctuations in propagation conditions. Corrections for delay and for changes in delay made at receiver. Requires only one-way transmission, simpler in principle, more energy- and cost-efficient, and enables use of longer transmission paths.

Multipath performance of a TDRS system employing wideband FM VHF signals

An approximate theoretical analysis is presented for the effects of specular reflection multipath on the performance of a one-way tracking and data relay satellite-to-user link. The analysis pertains to the wideband FM system employing a sinusoidal subcarrier to achieve spectrum spreading. Bounds on multipath effects are derived for receivers with and without limiters and for data modulated on the carrier or the subcarrier. For data modulation, performance is evaluated in terms of an additive lowpass signal at the data detection filter. Doppler and range tracking performance is evaluated in terms of root-mean-square (RMS) error of carrier frequency in a carrier PLL and rms phase jitter in a subcarrier PLL.

EEG monitoring of a free-swimming diver at a working depth of 15 meters.

Feasibility has been shown for underwater transmission of physiological signals, using frequency modulation of carriers transmitted by return-current-density methods, as part of a personal biotelemetry system. In the prototype system, a standard IRIG subcarrier frequency (2300 Hz) was used. Power requirements, antenna design, and signal attenuation are compatible with free-ranging diving activity at distances up to 15 meters from the receiver. Extrapolation from this study and further developments are expected to substantially increase the range. Advantages of this system include subcarrier compatibility with standard IRIG demodulators using channels 1 through 10, the absence of highly specialized antenna requirements, and reasonable attenuation characteristics for transmission through the turbidity of typical seawater. Moreover, the system would not appear to be depth limited, and to be compatible with use of high-powered transponders of the same type for long-distance transmission, with or without further encoding.

Multichannel telemetry system

A two-channel telemetry system is described in which one channel is used for high-rate data and the other channel for low-rate data communication. In the transmitter a signal, which subsequently phase modulates a carrier, is produced which is a function of at least the high-rate data, the low-rate data and the frequency of the subcarrier of the low-rate channel. In the receiver which includes a phase-locked loop, the high-rate data is detected off the receiver inphase channel output and the low-rate off the quadrature channel output.

Bi-directional four quadrant (BDQ4) power converter development

The feasibility for implementation of a concept for direct ac/dc multikilowatt power conversion with bidirectional transfer of energy was investigated. A 10 kHz current carrier was derived directly from a common 60 Hz three phase power system. This carrier was modulated to remove the 360 Hz ripple, inherent in the three phase power supply and then demodulated and processed by a high frequency filter. The resulting dc power was then supplied to a load. The process was implemented without the use of low frequency transformers and filters. This power conversion processes was reversible and can operate in the four quadrants as viewed from any of the two of the converter's ports. Areas of application include: power systems on air and spacecraft; terrestrial traction; integration of solar and wind powered systems with utility networks; HVDC; asynchronous coupling of polyphase networks; heat treatment; industrial machine drives; and power supplies for any use including instrumentation.

Pulsed Phase Shifter Improves Doppler Radar

Ability of microwave Doppler radar to measure velocity of slow moving nearby target is enhanced by pulsed 90 degrees phase shifter in radar transmission line between circulator and antenna. Because of phase shifting, Doppler frequency is detected as modulation on carrier instead of baseband signal. Carrier is amplified and filtered before demodulation, resulting in strong, clean demodulated Doppler for measurement and display.

Development and fabrication of a solar cell junction processing system

Modifications to the ground plane, to insure a good electrical return path during the pulse discharge, were made using a ring of beryllium copper finger stock attached to the underside of the aluminum ground plate. Experiments on annealing of wafers with ion implantation damage continued. The entire surface of 100 mm diameter wafers were annealed by one pulse for the standard implant (10 keV, phosphorus, 2x10 to the 15th power ions/sq cm). While samples are being fabricated into solar cells for electrical characterization, work is continuing on improvement of the electron beam uniformity and the optimization of the diode parameters. The engineering design was completed and the manufacturing detail drawings were released for fabrication. Assembly of the subcomponents for the exit and entrance locks is almost complete. These components include the cassettes, the indexing mechanisms, main doors, and wafer carrier transfer modules. The 'Y' track and three phase transition track sections are under final assembly and test.

An integrated-circuit quadriphase shift keying (QPSK) exciter and modulator have demonstrated excellent performance directly modulating a carrier frequency of 60 GHz with an output phase error of less than 3 degrees and maximum amplitude error of 0.5 dB. The circuit consists of a 60-GHz Gunn VCO phase-locked to a low-frequency reference source, a 4th subharmonic mixer, and a QPSK modlator packaged into a small volume of 1.8 x 2.5 x 0.35 in. The use of microstrip has the advantages of small size, light-weight, and low-cost fabrication. The unit has the potential for multigigabit data rate applications.

Behavior Of Costas Loop In Reception Of Telemetry

Report presents theoretical study of behavior of Costas loop in reception of radio carrier signal modulated in phase by sinusoidal or square-wave subcarrier, further modulated in phase by nonreturn-to-zero binary data signal. Phase and frequency of received signal affected by Doppler shift, and instantaneous amplitude of received signal corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise. Signals of this type ordinarily used in spacecraft telemetry, sine-wave subcarrier being preferred for shorter signal paths and square-wave subcarrier for longer signal paths.
