Circularly Polarized Optical Stark Effect in CdSe Colloidal Quantum Wells

Colloidal quantum wells, or nanoplatelets, exhibit large, circularly polarized optical Stark effects under sub-band-gap femtosecond illumination. The optical Stark effect is measured for CdSe colloidal quantum wells of several thicknesses and separately as a measure of pump photon energy, pump fluence, and temperature. These measurements show that optical Stark effects in colloidal quantum wells shift the absorption features up to 5 meV, at the intensities up to 2.9 GW.cm -2 and large detuning (>400 meV) of the pump photon energy from the band edge absorption. Optical Stark shifts are underpinned by large transition dipoles of the colloidal quantum wells (mu = 15-23 D), which are larger than those of any reported colloidal quantum dots or epitaxial quantum wells. The rapid (<500 fs), narrow band blue shift of the excitonic features under circular excitation indicates the viability of these materials beyond light emission such as spintronics or all-optical switching.

Simulation of amplitude-modulated circularly polarized Alfven waves for beta less than one

The nonlinear properties of the amplitude-modulated circularly polarized Alfven wave are studied for beta less than one. The temporal behavior of the wave packet of the electromagnetic hybrid simulation is compared with a numerical solution of the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equation. It is shown that the left-hand-polarized mode evolves into a shocklike structure due to the modulational instability. However, both cyclotron damping and a snowplow effect near the steepened wave packet suppress its further steepening, contrary to the predictions of the DNLS equation. For the right-hand mode, formation of the shock does not take place, and the initial time development is well described by the DNLS equation. The daughter Alfven wave and ion acoustic waves are excited due to the decay instability at a later time. Heating or acceleration of the particles takes place for both left- and right-hand waves. Energy transfer from the wave to the particles occurs effectively when substantial modulation in the wave amplitude is present.

On the stability of self-consistent large amplitude waves in a cold plasma. I - Transverse circularly polarized waves in the absence of a large scale magnetic field

It is demonstrated that a self-consistent circularly polarized wave in an otherwise field-free homogeneous cold plasma is unstable to small amplitude perturbations. For either an electron-positron plasma or an electron-proton plasma the instability rate is at least about the order of the effective plasma frequency when the bulk flow speed is zero. For finite bulk flow speeds of the plasma, it is shown that the electron-positron plasma is unstable, again with a growth rate of the order of the effective plasma frequency; it is also shown that the electron-proton plasma is unstable (at least at small wave numbers, k) with a growth rate proportional to k. The calculated instability rates are conservative, for other modes not investigated here may be more unstable. The results of these calculations bear directly on the understanding of plasma systems thought to be driven by large amplitude waves.

Nonlinear Drift-Kinetic Equation in the Presence of a Circularly Polarized Wave

Equations of the single particle motion and nonlinear kinetic equation for plasma in the presence of a circularly polarized wave of arbitrary frequency in the drift approximation are presented. The nonstationarity and inhomogeneity of the plasma-wave system are taken into account. The time dependent part of the ponderomotive force is discussed.

Deterministic scattering of relativistic electron beams by off-resonant circularly polarized electromagnetic waves

A mechanism is presented whereby relativistic electron beams localized in phase space are deterministically scattered by coherent circularly polarized electromagnetic waves without stochastic processes. It is shown via an exact single-particle analysis that the condition for maximal scattering is an off-resonant condition, contrary to previous kinetic analyses that predict maximal diffusion or interaction at exact resonance or its harmonics. The mechanism, verified by single-particle simulations, enables a fast, nonlinear redistribution of the beam particles. A possible application of this mechanism to runaway electron suppression is presented.

Circularly Polarized Antenna with Wide Projection and Range: A Concept

The slotted antenna structure discussed in this tech brief radiates a circularly polarized beam pattern over a wide angle. The basic structure, composed of waveguide slots, can be flush mounted in an airplane or spacecraft, and could be used in the communication link between an airplane and an air traffic satellite.

Enhanced ionization of counter-rotating electrons via doorway states in ultrashort circularly polarized laser pulses

We have performed single-active-electron numerical calculations of neon- and argonlike atoms interacting with short, intense, circularly polarized laser pulses at wavelengths between 10 nm and 1000 nm. Our results reveal a surprisingly large change by a factor of about 100 in the ionization ratio of electrons in initial states counter-rotating with respect to the field over corotating electrons in the previously unexplored intermediate few-photon ionization regime. The physical mechanism behind this observation is related to resonant enhanced ionization via states close in energy to the initial states. These doorway states are accessible exclusively from the initial state for counter-rotating electrons within the respective wavelength regime. Furthermore, the results may open a new route for controlling the generation of spin-polarized electrons by ultrashort laser pulses.

Circularly polarized antennas with controlled radiation patterns

Log-helix conical antennas were examined as a way to satisfy the requirement for circular polarization of antennas for spacecraft use. It was concluded that a multiple-helix antenna which allows the helix lead angle to be changed can be used when the radiation and directivity in the direction of the reception point must be changed during flight.

Probing circular polarization and magnetic field structure in active galactic nuclei

The composition and magnetic field morphology of relativistic jets can be studied using circular polarization (CP) measurement. Recent three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (3D RMHD) simulations coupled with radiative transfer (RT) calculations make strong predictions about the level (and morphology) of the jet’s CP emission. These simulations show that the sign of CP and the electric vector position angle (EVPA) are both sensitive to the jet’s magnetic field morphology within the radio core. We probe this theory by exploring whether the jet’s radio core EVPA orientation is consistent with the observed sign of the core CP in deep full-track polarimetric observations. Based on a selection of sources from earlier MOJAVE observations, we aim to probe the nature of linear polarization (LP) and CP in the innermost regions of jets from a small sample of nine blazars. This sample includes sources that have exhibited: (i) positive CP; (ii) negative CP; or (iii) positive and negative CP simultaneously in the radio core region. By coupling deep polarimetric observations of a carefully selected sample of blazars with state-of-the-art RMHD and RT calculations, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of the physics of blazar jets.

Asymmetric photolysis of /RS/-leucine with circularly polarized ultraviolet light

(RS)-leucine in 0.1 M HCl solution has been subjected to photolysis with 212.8-nm right (R-) and left circularly polarized light (LCPL) obtained from a laser source. RCPL preferentially photolyzed the (R)-leucine component and LCPL the (S)-leucine component of the RS substrate. The enantiomeric excess produced were 1.98% for the 59% conversion with RCPL and 2.50% for the 75% conversion with LCPL. These 'equal and opposite' effects represent the second highest enantiomeric enrichments yet reported for an asymmetric photolysis and the first ever reported for a prebiotically important substrate - an amino acid. Implications regarding the origin of optical activity are briefly discussed.

Suspended Patch Antennas With Electromagnetically Coupled Inverted Microstrip Feed for Circular Polarization

The paper demonstrates a suspended nearly square patch antenna with offset feed and a square patch antenna with truncated corners for circular polarization. The antennas are excited by an electromagnetically coupled inverted microstrip feed. In addition a new transition between conventional microstrip and inverted microstrip is proposed. The measured results include the axial ratio and the impedance bandwidth of the antennas.
