Low-loss, circularly-polarized dichroic plate

Dichroic plate has orthogonally-disposed, loaded dipole apertures with their orientations arranged so as to cancel cross-coupling effects which would otherwise result in power loss to circularly polarized signal.

A Ka-Band (26 GHz) Circularly Polarized 2x2 Microstrip Patch Sub-Array with Compact Feed

A Ka-Band (26 gigahertz) 2 by 2 sub-array with square-shaped microstrip patch antenna elements having two truncated corners for circular polarization (CP) is presented. In addition, the layout for a new compact microstrip feed network for the sub-array is also presented. The compact feed network offers a footprint size reduction of near 60 percent over traditional sub-array at 26 gigahertz. Experimental data indicates that a truncation amount a equals 0.741 millimeters for an isolated patch element results in a return loss (S (sub II)) of minus 35 decibels at 26.3 gigahertz. Furthermore, the measured S (sub II) for the proof-of-concept sub-array with the above elements is better than minus 10.0 decibels at 27.7 gigahertz. However, the impedance match and the operating frequency can be fine-tuned to 26 gigahertz by adjusting the feed network dimensions. Lastly, good agreement is observed between the measured and simulated S (sub II) for the subarray for both right hand and left hand CP. The goal of this effort is utilize the above sub-array as a building block for a larger N by N element array, which would serve as a feed for a reflector antenna for satellite communications.

NGC 1068, 3C 273, and Scorpius X-1 - Circular polarization disputed.

Discussion of data for the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, the quasar 3C 273, and the X-ray source Sco X-1, for all of which it has been claimed or strongly suggested that they have large circular polarization of the order of 1% (Severny et al., 1971). In contrast the present authors obtained unambiguously null results with upper limits about 0.05% for NGC 1068 and 3C 273. For Sco X-1 no statistically significant polarization was found on three nights, and only some marginal evidence for a fluctuation or transient polarization on one night.

Efficient IR Transmission Diffraction Grating for Circularly Polarized Light

Numerical methods, using rigorous coupled wave theory, are used to design rectangular relief diffraction gratings for an infrared application which requires comparable first order efficiencies in the TE and TM polarization states. The depth, period, and fill factor of the grating are varied to identify optimal two level binary lamellar grating profiles which predict efficiencies for individual TM and TE polarizations above 75 percent, while keeping the difference between the two efficiencies within 10 percent. The application at hand is a rotating, transmissive diffractive scanner for space-based coherent lidar. The operating wavelength is 2.0 microns. A collimated, circularly polarized beam is incident on the diffractive scanner at the Bragg angle; 30 and 45 degree beam deflection angles being studied. Fused silica is the substrate material of choice. Selected designs are fabricated on 3 inch fused silica substrates using lithographic methods. The performance of the test pieces is measured and compared to theoretical predictions.

Omnidirectional, circularly polarized, cylindrical microstrip antenna

A microstrip cylindrical antenna comprised of two concentric subelements on a ground cylinder, a vertically polarized (E-field parallel to the axis of the antenna cylinder) subelement on the inside and a horizontally polarized (E-field perpendicular to the axis) subelement on the outside. The vertical subelement is a wraparound microstrip radiator. A Y-shaped microstrip patch configuration is used for the horizontally polarized radiator that is wrapped 1.5 times to provide radiating edges on opposite sides of the cylindrical antenna for improved azimuthal pattern uniformity. When these subelements are so fed that their far fields are equal in amplitude and phased 90.degree. from each other, a circularly polarized EM wave results. By stacking a plurality of like antenna elements on the ground cylinder, a linear phased array antenna is provided that can be beam steered to the desired elevation angle.

Evolution of Circular Polarization Ratio (CPR) Profiles of Kilometer-scale Craters on the Lunar Maria

When sufficiently large impact craters form on the Moon, rocks and unweathered materials are excavated from beneath the regolith and deposited into their blocky ejecta. This enhances the rockiness and roughness of the proximal ejecta surrounding fresh impact craters. The interior of fresh craters are typically also rough, due to blocks, breccia, and impact melt. Thus, both the interior and proximal ejecta of fresh craters are usually radar bright and have high circular polarization ratios (CPR). Beyond the proximal ejecta, radar-dark halos are observed around some fresh craters, suggesting that distal ejecta is finer-grained than background regolith. The radar signatures of craters fade with time as the regolith grows.

Wide-angle, circularly polarized, omnidirectional-array antenna

Modified conventional turnstile antenna features bifoliate pattern with relatively high gain and good circularity over solid area enclosed by the 0.26 and 1.31 radian angles of elevation. These antennas are intended for high altitude balloon use, their permissible weight is restricted to one pound.

Measurement of the circular polarization of pulsar NP 0532.

The polarizer is briefly described. The polarization of the whole pulse is not significantly different from zero (-0.15 plus or minus 0.70 per cent). Polarization measurements of the leading edge and trailing edge of the main pulse are also given.

Circularly-polarized multiband telemetry tracking antenna

Utilize coaxial horn feed to illuminate reflector; feed has inner horn for X-band, and outer horn for S-band. Tracking error signals for servo correction are derived from measurements of relative phase and relative amplitude between two modes.

Improved circularly polarized antenna

Antenna includes two sets of linearly polarized elements. Each set contains slots in parallel array. Sets are mutually orthogonal and are driven in phase quadrature. By changing lengths of slots or their separations, antenna beamwidth can be changed over wide range. Similar results are achieved with dipole configuration.
