Material‐Driven Neuronal Oscillators and Filters via Active Reactance in CC‐NDR and VC‐NDR Electro‐Thermal Memristors

The continued scaling of artificial intelligence and telecommunications hardware is increasingly constrained by the power, bandwidth, and area limitations of transistor-based circuits. Neuromorphic processor units, analog oscillators, and active inductors and capacitors rely on complex multi-transistor architectures restricting material choices and incurring energy and footprint overhead. Here, we show that active reactance in electro-thermal memristors provides an intrinsic, material driven route to neuronal oscillator dynamics and signal processing. Using a physics-based compact modeling framework, we bridge negative differential resistance (NDR) and bias-tunable reactance, which underlies spiking dynamics in electro-thermal memristors. Memristors with negative temperature coefficients of resistance (TCR) manifest current-controlled (CC-) NDR and act as active inductors, thus generating spiking above a critical circuit capacitance; whereas memristors with positive TCR manifest voltage-controlled (VC-) NDR and active capacitance, leading to spiking above a critical inductance. By creating a compact model for La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 as a representative VC-NDR material and comparing it with LaCoO 3 manifesting CC-NDR, we explain the physical origins of their distinct current-voltage characteristics, reactive phase shifts and consequent spiking behaviors. Finally, we demonstrate tunable filtering enabled by the active reactance of electro-thermal memristors, establishing them as a compact hardware platform for neuronal oscillator functionality and integrated filtering beyond conventional CMOS.

Influence of alloy solidification path on melt pool behavior in additive manufacturing

Numerical models used to study transport phenomena in laser-powder bed fusion processes often rely on assumptions and simplifications to reduce their computational expense. One common simplification is in the description of latent heat evolution during the solid-liquid phase change (i.e., the solidification pathway), justified by the fact that the mushy zone thickness is similar to the numerical grid spacing used for continuum transport models. The lack of resolution of transport phenomena in the mushy zone motivates the use of computationally convenient solidification paths such as linear or sigmoidal relationships over pathways derived from fundamental solidification theory such as equilibrium or Scheil models. In the present work, an uncertainty quantification (UQ) framework is used to analyze the influence of solidification pathway selection on the solidification dynamics and melt pool geometries in laser based additive manufacturing (AM) of IN625. Results show the solidification pathway has a quantifiable influence on the cooling rate at the liquidus isotherm, mushy zone thickness, and solidification time. Due to similarities in the latent heat evolution at the beginning of solidification, the equilibrium and Scheil models predict similar cooling rates near the liquidus isotherm, however the wider freezing range of Scheil leads to a wider mushy zone compared to equilibrium. The non-physical latent heat release profiles of sigmoidal and linear paths lead to significant overpredictions of cooling rates at the liquidus isotherm compared to equilibrium and Scheil. Finally, these results indicate that careful consideration should be given to the choice of solidification pathway to ensure reliable model predictions.

Integrating Carbon Capture, Utilization, & Sequestration into Chemical Pulp Mills

The U.S. pulp and paper industry presents a unique and largely untapped opportunity for large- scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Unlike most industrial sectors, pulp mills rely heavily on biomass, meaning that much of their carbon emissions originate from atmospheric CO₂ that was recently captured by plants. If this biogenic CO₂ can be captured and permanently stored, pulp mills can be transformed from carbon emitters into net carbon removal facilities. This project was motivated by that opportunity and aimed to develop and evaluate integrated, low-cost strategies for capturing, utilizing, and sequestering CO₂ within existing chemical pulping operations. The scope of this work focused on four complementary innovations designed to integrate seamlessly into kraft pulp mill infrastructure: (1) in situ CO₂ capture within the recovery cycle, (2) oxy-fuel retrofitting of the rotary lime kiln to produce a high-purity CO₂ stream, (3) ex situ CO₂ capture and mineralization using pulp mill residues (dregs, grits, and lime mud), and (4) beneficial reuse of these residues as mineral carbonate fertilizers. The project combined process modeling, laboratory experimentation, life cycle assessment (LCA), and field trials to evaluate the technical feasibility, economic viability, and environmental impact of these approaches. The results demonstrate that pulp mills can serve as effective platforms for carbon removal when equipped with integrated carbon capture systems. Process modeling showed that combining sodium spiking with oxy-fuel calcination significantly enhances CO₂ capture efficiency while reducing costs by up to 31% compared to conventional configurations. Experimental work further revealed that calcination behavior in high-CO₂ environments differs substantially from traditional systems, leading to the development of a new kinetic model that predicts reaction rates under these conditions. This model provides essential design guidance for next-generation decarbonized lime kilns. In parallel, the project demonstrated that alkaline mineral residues generated during pulping operations can be repurposed as a sustainable alternative to agricultural lime. Across a wide range of soils in the southeastern United States, these materials performed equivalently to commercial lime in adjusting soil pH while offering lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced cost. Field and greenhouse studies confirmed that crop and tree growth responses were comparable, supporting their viability as a drop-in replacement. This co-product pathway provides a practical utilization strategy that offsets costs and improves overall system economics. A major contribution of this project is the first comprehensive life cycle assessment of carbon removal in pulp and paper systems across multiple system boundaries. Results show that retrofitted mills can achieve carbon removal efficiencies ranging from 12% to 92%, depending on how the system is defined. This finding highlights a critical issue in carbon accounting: reported performance is highly sensitive to methodological choices. By explicitly quantifying these differences, this work provides valuable guidance for policymakers, carbon registries, and project developers working to standardize carbon removal metrics. From a commercialization perspective, the technologies investigated in this project are well- aligned with existing industrial infrastructure, minimizing the need for entirely new facilities. 3 DE-EE0009413 Industry engagement throughout the project—including collaboration with pulp and paper companies, equipment manufacturers, and carbon removal developers—has accelerated the transition from research to deployment. Notably, a commercial developer is actively pursuing carbon capture projects at pulp mills in the southeastern United States and has cited this research as a contributing foundation. The emergence of voluntary carbon markets and long-term offtake agreements further strengthens the business case for implementation. The broader public benefits of this work are significant. By enabling large-scale carbon removal using existing industrial systems, this approach offers a near-term pathway to reduce atmospheric CO₂ concentrations while supporting domestic manufacturing and rural economies. The reuse of industrial residues as fertilizers reduces reliance on mined materials, lowers costs for farmers, and decreases environmental impacts associated with conventional lime production. In addition, the project has supported workforce development by training graduate students and researchers in carbon capture technologies, helping to build capacity in a critical area of national interest. In conclusion, this project demonstrates that integrated carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration in pulp mills is both technically feasible and economically promising. By combining process innovation, experimental validation, and systems-level analysis, the work advances the understanding of how biomass-based industries can contribute to climate mitigation. The findings provide a strong foundation for commercial deployment and offer a scalable solution for transforming a major U.S. industry into a source of durable carbon removal.

Puget Sound Regional Council 2006 Household Activity Survey

The purpose of the 2006 Puget Sound Regional Council Household Activity Survey was to provide data for travel demand models for the Puget Sound region, for the assessment of current activity and travel patterns, and for the estimation of future activity and travel within the region under various policy scenarios. One important goal of this project is to improve planners' ability to evaluate impacts of future policies and actions on travel patterns and transportation facility use through the development of a database. This database both captures the current status of activity and travel in the region and includes attitudes, preferences, and choices about activities and travel. In the design of the 2006 survey, basic demographics, activities, and tour and travel characteristics were collected for every member (including children) of 4,746 households during a consecutive 48-hour travel period. Vehicle global positioning system (GPS) data were collected from a subsample of 220 of these households, including completed activity/travel diaries for each household member. (Up to three vehicles per household were equipped with GPS units). The final GPS tracking data contained detailed information on the travel paths of 220 households with two vehicles in the same 48-hour period recorded in the diaries.

(Doublon) Benchmarking of Different Inverse Point Kinetics Implementations for an Autocorrected Reactimeter Algorithm

In November 2017, the Transient Reactor Test Facility returned to operation. Since that time, many transient test series have been completed, such as the Transient Heatsink Overpower Response capsule (THOR), the Transient Water Irradiation System for TREAT (TWIST), and Sirius. Each has provided valuable data for materials performance and reactor safety that can be applied in future designs. During each experimental series, detector count rates provided important information on the core behavior during transients. However, a limitation of these data is that variations in the neutron distribution during experiments can cause errors when attempting to infer reactivity evolution from detector signals. Neutron physics codes can be used to compute the flux shape variations. However, this is a poor solution when the experimental data is used for code verification, validation and uncertainty quantification. Indeed, if the output of the code is used both as a reference and to correct what the reference is compared to, the circular dependency limits the quality of the verification, validation and uncertainty quantification approach. To overcome this problem, the autocorrected reactimeter algorithm (ACRA) has been developed. This approach infers a time-dependent reactivity evolution by testing different spatial corrections and selecting the one that minimizes reactivity variations when the core is in a frozen configuration (i.e., when there is no variation in parameters affecting reactivity). However, the scope of this method was limited to transients where there were negligible thermal feedback. Indeed, the core is never in a frozen configuration when the fuel temperature varies during the whole transient. This is our motivation for developing an improved version of the ACRA that does not require frozen configurations. To develop this new algorithm, we need a precise and unbiased implementation of the inverse point kinetic equations (IPKEs) as any error in the reactivity evaluation will be propagated into the choice of the optimal spatial correction. Indeed, the previous reactimeter algorithm would use approximations, such as a negligible flux amplitude derivative, to focus on rapidity. For the numerical validation of ACRA, we aim at absolute error under for reactivity derived from signals similar to the one of this study. In this summary, we test eight different IPKE implementations. Each will process a mockup signal built for this study, similar to those that the future ACRA will process. Each reactivity output will be compared to the reference reactivity that has been used to generate the mockup signal. The implementation minimizing the difference with the reference reactivity will be used in the development of a new ACRA formulation.

2004-2006 Puget Sound Traffic Choices Study

The 2004-2006 Puget Sound Traffic Choices Study tested the hypothesis that time-of-day variable road tolling in Seattle, Washington, could reduce traffic congestion and generate revenue. In 2002, the Puget Sound Regional Council received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration for a pilot project on congestion-based tolling. To test the hypothesis, the study placed global positioning system data loggers into the vehicles of about 275 households in the Seattle metropolitan area. The project recorded roughly 18 months of trip data (from November 2004 to April 2006) and included more than 400 vehicles. For most vehicles, the tolling influence experiment phase of the study began in July 2005 and lasted for 32 weeks. The three months immediately preceding the experiment period for each vehicle served as the control period.

Modeling household-level party composition behavior for multiparty activities: a random parameter nested logit modeling approach

This study presents findings of a household-level party composition model for multiparty activities. It exploits data from a comprehensive Household Travel Survey conducted by Chicago Metropolitan Agency of Planning. The study estimates a random parameter nested logit model to capture households’ unobserved preference heterogeneity and non-proportional substitution patterns in terms of activity party composition for multiparty activities. A wide variety of household demographics, activity attributes and residential neighborhood characteristics are examined in this paper. The magnitude of the impacts of the determinants are tested in this study by analyzing the elasticity of the variables, which suggests that household demographics and attributes of the multiparty activities have significant effects on the household-level activity party composition. Residential neighborhood characteristics, although somewhat less impactful, still play a meaningful role. This model will be implemented within the POLARIS transportation systems simulator to improve the activity generation modeling workflow, and the prediction accuracy of various activity-travel components.
