Mixed-flow design for microfluidic printing of two-component polymer semiconductor systems

The rational creation of two-component conjugated polymer systems with high levels of phase purity in each component is challenging but crucial for realizing printed soft-matter electronics. Here, we report a mixed-flow microfluidic printing (MFMP) approach for two-component π -polymer systems that significantly elevates phase purity in bulk-heterojunction solar cells and thin-film transistors. MFMP integrates laminar and extensional flows using a specially microstructured shear blade, designed with fluid flow simulation tools to tune the flow patterns and induce shear, stretch, and pushout effects. This optimizes polymer conformation and semiconducting blend order as assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), resonant soft X-ray scattering (R-SoXS), photovoltaic response, and field effect mobility. For printed all-polymer (poly[(5,6-difluoro-2-octyl-2H-benzotriazole-4,7-diyl)-2,5-thiophenediyl[4,8-bis[5-(2-hexyldecyl)-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl]-2,5-thiophenediyl]) [J51]:(poly{[N,N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)}) [N2200]) solar cells, this approach enhances short-circuit currents and fill factors, with power conversion efficiency increasing from 5.20% for conventional blade coating to 7.80% for MFMP. Moreover, the performance of mixed polymer ambipolar [poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):N2200] and semiconducting:insulating polymer unipolar (N2200:polystyrene) transistors is similarly enhanced, underscoring versatility for two-component π -polymer systems. Mixed-flow designs offer modalities for achieving high-performance organic optoelectronics via innovative printing methodologies.

Oligoether-Functionalized PEDOT: Combining an EDOT Backbone with Polar Side Chains for Solution Processability and High Electrical Conductivity

Conjugated polymers functionalized with oligoether (OE)-based side chains are a key class of materials for various organic electronic applications, including transparent electrodes, thermoelectrics, electrochromic displays, and electrochemical transistors. Herein, we report a highly soluble OE-functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) homopolymer, prepared by direct (hetero)arylation polymerization, which allows solution processing to yield films with comparable redox properties to oxidatively polymerized PEDOT. This polymer, PEDOT(OE3), when optimally oxidatively doped, reaches among the highest electrical conductivities of any OE-functionalized polymer and is comparable to more synthetically complex OE-functionalized polymers. X-ray scattering and spectroscopy were utilized to rationalize the transport properties resulting from varying the doping level. Comparison of PEDOT(OE3) to a series of OE-functionalized dioxythiophenes with varying amounts of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene units allows for a deeper understanding of structure–property relationships through charge-transport models. Ultimately, PEDOT(OE3) is shown to be a material with exceptional charge-transport properties and is promising for various applications.

Highly stretchable polymer semiconductor thin films with multi-modal energy dissipation and high relative stretchability

Abstract Stretchable polymer semiconductors (PSCs) have seen great advancements alongside the development of soft electronics. But it remains a challenge to simultaneously achieve high charge carrier mobility and stretchability. Herein, we report the finding that stretchable PSC thin films (<100-nm-thick) with high stretchability tend to exhibit multi-modal energy dissipation mechanisms and have a large relative stretchability ( rS ) defined by the ratio of the entropic energy dissipation to the enthalpic energy dissipation under strain. They effectively recovered the original molecular ordering, as well as electrical performance, after strain was released. The highest rS value with a model polymer (P4) exhibited an average charge carrier mobility of 0.2 cm 2 V −1 s −1 under 100% biaxial strain, while PSCs with low rS values showed irreversible morphology changes and rapid degradation of electrical performance under strain. These results suggest rS can be used as a parameter to compare the reliability and reversibility of stretchable PSC thin films.

Distinguishing photo-induced oxygen attack on alkyl chain versus conjugated backbone for alkylthienyl-benzodithiophene (BDTT)-based push–pull polymers

Synthetic design has enabled increasing power conversion efficiency advances in organic photovoltaics (OPV). One continuing knowledge gap is detailed understanding of single-material chemical (photo)stability. Many considerations are based on prior OPV-relevant donor homopolymer systems rather than the next-generation push–pull architectures. Generally, energetic offsets between the lowest occupied molecular orbital of the donor and molecular oxygen are assumed to dictate kinetics of photo-induced charge transfer to a super oxide radical. Herein we determine the ambient-induced photo-degradation pathways, presented as proposed site-specific arrow-pushing mechanisms, for five donor polymers all containing the same push unit – alkylthienyl-substituted-benzodithiophene (BDTT) – but with chemically distinct pull units. The donor-only polymer films were subject to controlled photobleaching in air as an accelerated degradation approach, coupled with simultaneous monitoring of absorptance. Sample subsets were periodically removed and analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, to evaluate near-surface chemical composition and oxygen additions to hetero reporter atoms on either the BDTT push unit or distinct pull unit (i.e., sulphur and nitrogen). Here, this methodology allows us to distinguish between different mechanisms of bond cleavage and formation. Overall, we find that neither polymer redox properties nor individual push or pull unit stability are sufficient to predict photo-oxidative degradation of these polymers. Rather, there is a greater dependence on the susceptibility of unique structural groups within a polymeric system. Alkyl chain oxygen addition is generally the first attack site and direct sulfur oxidation on the conjugated backbone occurs after saturation of the alkyl chain initiation sites. This work provides a standard that could be used to evaluate relative photo-oxidative (in)stability for new OPV materials quickly – prior to time-consuming device optimization – and demonstrates an effective methodology for correlating optical degradation with chemical structure alterations via spectroscopic signatures to guide synthetic design.

A Three-in-One Hybrid Strategy for High-Performance Semiconducting Polymers Processed from Anisole

The development of semiconducting polymers with good processability in green solvents and competitive electrical performance is essential for realizing sustainable large-scale manufacturing and commercialization of organic electronics. A major obstacle is the processability-performance dichotomy that is dictated by the lack of ideal building blocks with balanced polarity, solubility, electronic structures, and molecular conformation. Herein, through the integration of donor, quinoid and acceptor units, an unprecedented building block, namely TQBT, is introduced for constructing a serial of conjugated polymers. The TQBT, distinct in non-symmetric structure and high dipole moment, imparts enhanced solubility in anisole—a green solvent—to the polymer TQBT-T. Furthermore, PTQBT-T possess a highly rigid and planar backbone owing to the nearly coplanar geometry and quinoidal nature of TQBT, resulting in strong aggregation in solution and localized aggregates in film. Remarkably, PTQBT-T films spuncast from anisole exhibit a hole mobility of 2.30 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is record high for green solvent-processable semiconducting polymers via spin-coating, together with commendable operational and storage stability. The hybrid building block emerges as a pioneering electroactive unit, shedding light on future design strategies in high-performance semiconducting polymers compatible with green processing and marking a significant stride towards ecofriendly organic electronics.

Lignin as a bioactive polymer and heavy metal absorber- an overview

As a pulping and bio-refinery by-product with phenolic chemical structure, lignin indicated high potential as natural antioxidant activity, UV blocker, antibacterial and toxic material absorbent properties. Presence of phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin structure plays the main role of its antioxidant activity. However, lignin antioxidant power can change depending on its other structural features and functional groups like ortho-methoxy groups, –OCH 3 groups, the α-CH 2 groups, the aliphatic carbonyl groups, and the size of π-conjugated systems. Lignin in mixture with synthetic polymers, improved their thermal stability. Lignin has high UV light absorbing potential in broad-spectrum (UVA, UVB). Adding 1–5% of lignin into hand cream indicated excellent range of sun protection factor (SPF) with more than 95% UV light absorption. Lignin also indicated strong UV light protection when applied in different transparent film and protect paint, oil, and varnish from UV degradation. Further, lignosulfonate and other modified lignin including chemically modification, nano-particles and lignin hydrogel indicated high potential as heavy metal absorber.

Carbazole-Based Hole Transport Polymer for Methylammonium-Free Tin-Lead Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Efficiency and Stability

As the most commonly used hole transport material (HTM) in tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the PSCs due to its acidic characteristics. Herein, an easily synthesized polymer HTM poly[(phenyl)imino[9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole]-2,7-diyl] (CzAn) with a shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -4.95 eV is used in a p-i-n structure, methylammonium-free, Sn-Pb PSC to replace PEDOT:PSS. Upon optimization using doping and surface engineering, high quality Sn-Pb PSCs could be successfully fabricated, boosting the PCE to 22.6% (stabilized PCE of 21.3%) compared with 21.2% for PEDOT:PSS. The perovskite films prepared on the modified CzAn HTM possess improved crystallinity, reduced trap-state density, and larger carrier mobility resulting in PSCs with greatly improved stability.

Significant Efficiency Enhancements in Non‐Y Series Acceptors by the Addition of Outer Side Chains

Abstract Most current highly efficient organic solar cells utilize small molecules like Y6 and its derivatives as electron acceptors in the photoactive layer. In this work, a small molecule acceptor, SC8‐IT4F, is developed through outer side chain engineering on the terminal thiophene of a conjugated 6,12‐dihydro‐dithienoindeno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene (IDTT) central core. Compared to the reference molecule C8‐IT4F, which lacks outer side chains, SC8‐IT4F displays notable differences in molecule geometry (as shown by simulations), thermal behavior, single‐crystal packing, and film morphology. Blend films of SC8‐IT4F and the polymer donor PM6 exhibit larger carrier mobilities, longer carrier lifetimes, and reduced recombination compared to C8‐IT4F, resulting in improved device performance. Binary photovoltaic devices based on the PM6:SC8‐IT4F films reveal an optimal efficiency over 15%, which is one of the best values for non‐Y type small molecule acceptors (SMAs). The resultant devices also show better thermal and operational stability than the control PM6:L8‐BO devices. SC8‐IT4F and its blend exhibit a higher relative degree of crystallinity and π coherence length, compared to C8‐IT4F samples, beneficial for charge transport and device performance. The results indicate that outer side chain engineering on existing small electron acceptors can be a promising molecular design strategy for further pursuing high‐performance organic solar cells.

A Quinoidal Two‐Dimensional Metal–Organic Framework for High‐Performance Micro‐Supercapacitors and Solid‐State Lithium Batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) integrating redox-active linkers enable dense charge sites and open ion pathways for microscale energy storage. We report a quinoidal dicarboxylate ligand, AQM-H2L, derived from p-azaquinodimethane, forming crystalline frameworks with Cu2+ and Zn2+ nodes. The Cu-based MOF (AQM-AQM-H2L-Cu) exhibits layered sheets (>14 Å spacing) constructed from dinuclear Cu-carboxylate units and conjugated AQM linkers, which narrow the bandgap and introduce Cu2+/Cu+ pseudocapacitance. Exfoliated nanosheets (∼5 nm) retain crystallinity and excellent processability. Integrated into graphene films, they deliver areal and volumetric capacitances of 29.6 mF cm-2 and 18.1 F cm-3, achieving 2.6 mWh cm-3 energy density at 160 mW cm-3. As ionic fillers (1 wt%) in PEO solid polymer electrolytes, the nanosheets markedly enhance LiFePO4 cell performance, affording 169.8 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and 93% retention after 400 cycles. This work establishes quinoidal linkers as a compact and robust design motif for ionically active 2D frameworks toward high-performance miniature and solid-state energy devices.

Robust Chemiresistive Behavior in Conductive Polymer/MOF Composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for gas sensing but are often limited to single-use detection. A hybridization strategy is demonstrated synergistically deploying conductive MOFs (cMOFs) and conductive polymers (cPs) as two complementary mixed ionic-electronic conductors in high-performing stand-alone chemiresistors. This work presents significant improvement in i) sensor recovery kinetics, ii) cycling stability, and iii) dynamic range at room temperature. The effect of hybridization across well-studied cMOFs is demonstrated based on 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) and 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene (HITP) ligands with varied metal nodes (Co, Cu, Ni). A comprehensive mechanistic study is conducted to relate energy band alignments at the heterojunctions between the MOFs and the polymer with sensing thermodynamics and binding kinetics. The findings reveal that hole enrichment of the cMOF component upon hybridization leads to selective enhancement in desorption kinetics, enabling significantly improved sensor recovery at room temperature, and thus long-term response retention. This mechanism is further supported by density functional theory calculations on sorbate–analyte interactions. It is also found that alloying cPs and cMOFs enables facile thin film co-processing and device integration, potentially unlocking the use of these hybrid conductors in diverse electronic applications.

Engineering donor–acceptor conjugated polymers for high-performance and fast-response organic electrochemical transistors

To date, high-performance organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have mostly been based on polythiophene systems. Donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers are expected to be promising materials for OECTs owing to their high mobility and comparatively low crystallinity (good for ion diffusion). However, the OECT performance of D–A polymers lags far behind that of the polythiophenes. Here we synergistically engineered the backbone and side chain of a series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D–A polymers and found that redox potential, molecular weight, solution processability, and film microstructures all have a severe impact on their performance. After systematic engineering, P(bgDPP-MeOT2) exhibited the best figure-of-merit (μC*) of 225 F cm -1 V -1 s -1 , amongst the highest performance of the reported D–A polymers. Besides, the DPP polymers exhibited high hole mobility of over 1.6 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , leading to fast response OECTs with a record low turn-off response time of 30 μs. The polymer also exhibited good operation stability with a current retention of 98.8% over 700 electrochemical switching cycles. This work reveals the complexity and systematicness in the development of D–A polymer based high-performance OECTs.

N-type molecular doping of a semicrystalline conjugated polymer through cation exchange

Control of electrical doping is indispensable in any semiconductor device, and both efficient hole and electron doping are required for many devices. In organic semiconductors, however, electron doping has been essentially more problematic compared to hole doping because in general organic semiconductors have low electron affinities and require dopants with low ionization potentials that are often air-sensitive. Here, we adapt an efficient molecular doping method, so-called ion-exchange doping, to dope electrons in a polymeric semiconductor. We initially reduce the polymeric semiconductor using one electron transfer from molecular dopants, and then the ionized dopants in the resulting air-unstable films are replaced with secondary ions via cation exchange. Improved ambient stability and crystallinity of the doped polymeric semiconductors are achieved when a specific bulky molecular cation was chosen as the secondary ion, compared to conventional methods. The presented strategy can overcome the trade-off relationship between reducing capability and ambient stability in molecular dopants, and a wider selection of dopant ions will help to realize ambient-stable electron conductors.

Stereogenic-at-silicon hybrid conjugated polymers

Stereoregularity in carbon-based polymers impacts critical physical properties such as crystallinity, but achieving comparable precision in polysilanes remains challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of hybrid σ,π-conjugated polysilanes with defined stereoregularity, derived from cis- and trans-cyclosilane building blocks. Using Kumada polycondensation, we accessed a series of atactic, trans-enriched, and cis-enriched polysilanes, enabling a systematic investigation of how tacticity influences thermal and optical properties. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed distinct glass transition behaviors for stereoregular polymers compared to their atactic counterpart, and UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated enhanced spectral resolution upon annealing of stereoregular films. A linear silane-based analog further underscored the structural impact of cyclic stereogenic units. These findings highlight how stereochemical precision in silicon-containing backbones can modulate macromolecular properties, opening avenues for the rational design of stereoregular polysilanes.

Complex Relationship between Side-Chain Polarity, Conductivity, and Thermal Stability in Molecularly Doped Conjugated Polymers

Molecularly doped conjugated polymers with polar side chains are an emerging class of conducting materials exhibiting enhanced and thermally stable conductivity. In this work, we study the electronic conductivity (σ) and the corresponding thermal stability of two polythiophene derivatives comprising oligoethylene glycol side chains: one having oxygen attached to the thiophene ring (poly(3-(methoxyethoxyethoxy)thiophene) (P3MEET)) and the other having a methylene spacer between the oxygen and the thiophene ring (poly(3-(methoxyethoxyethoxymethyl)thiophene) (P3MEEMT)). Thin films were vapor-doped with fluorinated derivatives of tetracyanoquinodimethane (FnTCNQ, n = 4, 2, 1) to determine the role of dopant strength (electron affinity) in maximum achievable σ. Specifically, when vapor doping with F 4 TCNQ, P3MEET achieved a substantially higher σ of 37.1 ± 10.1 S/cm compared to a σ of 0.82 ± 0.06 S/cm for P3MEEMT. Structural characterization using a combination of X-ray and optical spectroscopy reveals that the higher degree of conformational order of polymer chains in the amorphous domain upon doping with F 4 TCNQ in P3MEET is a major contributing factor for the higher σ of P3MEET. Additionally, vapor-doped P3MEET exhibited superior thermal stability compared to P3MEEMT, highlighting that the presence of polar side chains alone does not ensure higher thermal stability. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the dopant–side-chain nonbond energy is lower in the P3MEET:F 4 TCNQ mixture, suggesting more favorable dopant–side-chain interaction, which is a factor in improving the thermal stability of a polymer/dopant pair. Our results reveal that additional factors such as polymer ionization energy and side-chain–dopant interaction should be taken into account for the design of thermally stable, highly conductive polymers.

Ionic Dopant-Induced Ordering Enhances the Thermoelectric Properties of a Polythiophene-Based Block Copolymer

Conjugated polymer-based block copolymers (CP-BCPs) are an unexplored class of materials for organic thermoelectrics. In this study, the authors report on the electronic conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (α) of a newly synthesized CP-BCP, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly (oligo-oxyethylene methacrylate) (P3HT-b-POEM), upon solution co-processing with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and subsequently vapor-doping with a molecular dopant, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ). It is found that the addition of the hydrophilic block POEM greatly enhances the processability of P3HT, enabling homogeneous solution-mixing with LiTFSI. Notably, interactions between P3HT-b-POEM with ionic species significantly improve molecular order and unexpectedly cause electrical oxidizing doping of P3HT block both in solution and solid-states, a phenomenon that has not been previously observed in Li-salt containing P3HT. Vapor doping of P3HT-b-POEM-LiTFSI thin films with F4TCNQ further enhances σ and yields a thermoelectric power factor PF = α 2 σ of 13.0 μW m -1 K -2 , which is more than 20 times higher than salt-free P3HT-b-POEM sample. Through modeling thermoelectric behaviors of P3HT-b-POEM with the Kang-Snyder transport model, the improvement in PF is attributed to higher electronic charge mobility originating from the enhanced molecular ordering of P3HT. The results demonstrate that solution co-processing CP-BCPs with a salt is a powerful method to control structure and performance of organic thermoelectric materials.

The Influence of Alkyl Spacers and Molecular Weight on the Charge Transport and Storage Properties of Oxy‐Bithiophene‐Based Conjugated Polymers

Conjugated polymers (CPs) with polar side chains can conduct electronic and ionic charges simultaneously, making them promising for bioelectronics, electrocatalysis and energy storage. Recent work showed that adding alkyl spacers between CP backbones and polar side chains improved electronic charge carrier mobility, reduced swelling and enhanced stability, without compromising ion transport. However, how alkyl spacers impact polymer backbone conformation and, subsequently, electronic properties remain unclear. In this work, we design two oxy-bithiophene-based CP series, each featuring progressively extended alkyl spacer lengths and two distinct molecular weight (MW) distributions. Using operando characterisations, we evaluate the (spectro)electrochemical and swelling properties of the polymer thin films, and their performance in organic field-effect transistors and organic electrochemical transistors. Surprisingly, alkyl spacers negatively impact the hole mobility of our polymers, with higher MW amplifying this effect. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that it is thermodynamically favourable for adjacent non-polar alkyl spacers to aggregate in polar electrolytes, leading to backbone twisting. Further spectroscopic measurements corroborate this prediction. Our findings demonstrate the active interactions between side chain structure, MW and electrolyte/solvent polarity in influencing polymer performance, underscoring the importance of considering solvation environment effects on polymer conformation when designing new mixed conducting CPs for electrochemical applications.

Balancing Ionic and Electronic Conduction for High‐Performance Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Abstract Conjugated polymers that support mixed (electronic and ionic) conduction are in demand for applications spanning from bioelectronics to energy harvesting and storage. To design polymer mixed conductors for high‐performance electrochemical devices, relationships between the chemical structure, charge transport, and morphology must be established. A polymer series bearing the same p‐type conjugated backbone with increasing percentage of hydrophilic, ethylene glycol side chains is synthesized, and their performance in aqueous electrolyte gated organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) is studied. By using device physics principles and electrochemical analyses, a direct relationship is found between the OECT performance and the balanced mixed conduction. While hydrophilic side chains are required to facilitate ion transport—thus enabling OECT operation—swelling of the polymer is not de facto beneficial for balancing mixed conduction. It is shown that heterogeneous water uptake disrupts the electronic conductivity of the film, leading to OECTs with lower transconductance and slower response times. The combination of in situ electrochemical and structural techniques shown here contributes to the establishment of the structure–property relations necessary to improve the performance of polymer mixed conductors and subsequently of OECTs.
