Cost Effectiveness of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2016 for the State of South Dakota

This report describes the methodology and results of a state cost-effectiveness analysis of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2016. Moving to the Standard 90.1-2016 edition from Standard 90.1-2013 is found to be cost-effective for the state. Annual energy cost savings, added construction costs, and life-cycle costs are all described and presented here for various building types and climate zones.

Investigation of Rare Earth Element Extraction from North Dakota Coal-Related Feedstocks (Phase 2 Final Technical Report)

There were four major goals of this project: i) identify promising lignite or lignite-related feedstocks with total rare earth element content above 300 parts per million (ppm), ii) evaluate at the lab and bench-scale the extractability of the REE from the material, iii) determine the processing required to generate REE concentrates in excess of 2 wt%, iv) evaluate the economic feasibility of the process and develop a pathway for commercialization. In the Phase 1 study, work was primarily focused upon resource evaluation and labscale extractability of the REE, with a preliminary techno-economic assessment (TEA) conducted, whereas in the Phase 2 work, the extraction process was conducted at the bench scale, a method for cost-effective generation of higher purity mixed REE concentrates (up to 65%) was developed, and a refined TEA on the bench-scale data for a 1,000 kg coal processing test was conducted.

South Dakota Region Scientific Deep Dive

EPOC uses the Deep Dive process to discuss and analyze current and planned science use cases and anticipated data output of a particular use case, site, or project to help inform the strategic planning of a campus or regional networking environment. This includes understanding future needs related to network operations, network capacity upgrades, and other technological service investments. A Deep Dive comprehensively surveys major research stakeholders’ plans and processes in order to investigate data management requirements over the next 5–10 years. Questions crafted to explore this space include the following: 1) How, and where, will new data be analyzed and used? 2) How will the process of doing science change over the next 5–10 years? and 3) How will changes to the underlying hardware and software technologies influence scientific discovery? Deep Dives help ensure that key stakeholders have a common understanding of the issues and the actions that a campus or regional network may need to undertake to offer solutions. The EPOC team leads the effort and relies on collaboration with the hosting site or network, and other affiliated entities that participate in the process. EPOC organizes, convenes, executes, and shares the outcomes of the review with all stakeholders

Understanding Building Energy Use in the Dakotas, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming: Basic Building Stock Characterization

This report is part of a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters." Each report provides commercial and multifamily building characteristic and energy data for a local geography, with the intention of helping policymakers at the city, county and state levels better understand building energy use. Specifically, this report breaks down the building stock in the counties shown in Figure 1 by building type, size, energy consumption, and emissions.
