3-D Radiological Data Acquisition, Visualization and Modeling - 20211

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was tasked to investigate and remediate low activity radiological contamination from research and production of the nation's first nuclear weapons at the former DuPont Chambers Works Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) site (DuPont). The DuPont site had several buildings used for the Manhattan project that were demolished in the 1940's and 1950's apparently using heavy earthmoving equipment. Some of the contaminated rubble from the demolition appears to have been spread out by this equipment resulting in somewhat random scattering of radiologically contaminated soil and debris along with aqueous spills. Traditional investigative methods such as soil borings, test pits and 2-dimensional gamma walkovers were only partially successful in delineating the radiological contamination at the site. It was feared that even 'chasing' the contamination during remediation would miss contamination if the demolition resulted in discontinuous trails of radiologically contaminated soils. In evaluating the data generated over the interceding decades, the USACE determined that a better method to collect and process the remedial action radiological data was needed to enable the project team to optimize predictive planning and meet documentation expectations. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the effort and progress to combine and organize radiological survey methods into a highly flexible sampling, modeling, and decision analysis approach that emphasizes the quality of decision-making during remediation. This innovative system blends multiple tools to develop a methodology that can extend MARRSIM [1] into the subsurface and provide tools that can be applied to other sites. (authors)

Photovoltaic Data Acquisition (PVDAQ) Public Datasets

The NREL PVDAQ is a large-scale time-series database containing system metadata and performance data from a variety of experimental PV sites and commercial public PV sites. The datasets are used to perform on-going performance and degradation analysis. Some of the sets can exhibit common elements that effect PV performance (e.g. soiling). The dataset consists of a series of files devoted to each of the systems and an associated set of metadata information that explains details about the system hardware and the site geo-location. Some system datasets also include environmental sensors that cover irradiance, temperatures, wind speeds, and precipitation at the site.

Real-Time Data Acquisition and Processing System for MHz Repetition Rate Image Sensors

An electro-optic detector is one of the diagnostic setups used in particle accelerators. It employs an electro-optic crystal to encode the longitudinal beam charge profile in the spectrum of a light pulse. The charge distribution is then reconstructed using data captured by a fast spectrometer. The measurement repetition rate should match or exceed the machine bunching frequency, which is often in the range of several MHz. A high-speed optical line detector (HOLD) is a linear camera designed for easy integration with scientific experiments. The use of modern FPGA circuits helps in the efficient collection and processing of data. The solution is based on Xilinx 7-Series FPGA circuits and implements a custom latency-optimized architecture utilizing the AXI4 family of interfaces. HOLD is one of the fastest line cameras in the world. Thanks to its hardware architecture and a powerful KALYPSO sensor from KIT, it outperforms the fastest comparable commercial devices.

Rapid data acquisition and machine learning-assisted composition design of functionally graded alloys via wire arc additive manufacturing

Abstract The lack of high-quality datasets in materials science hinders artificial intelligence (AI)-driven alloy design. To address this challenge, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) was employed to fabricate graded alloys, generating extensive data for machine learning (ML)-assisted property prediction. ML models were developed using high-throughput experiments, computational models, and genetic algorithm to optimize feature selection, successfully predicting hardness and porosity. The ML model demonstrated its efficacy by designing a gradient alloy with enhanced properties. However, scaling up revealed uncertainties in tensile property and porosity due to differences in size and thermal conditions between the designed alloy build and the gradient print used to construct the ML model. This underscores the need for uncertainty quantification and process optimization in WAAM-driven alloy design. Our work advances AI-integrated additive manufacturing, offering a rapid approach to exploring process–structure–property relationships and accelerating materials development.

SonicPy: a suite of programs for ultrasound pulse-echo data acquisition and analysis

Sound speed and elastic constants measurements in solids and liquids are commonly performed using the ultrasound pulse-echo technique. Recent advances have expanded the use of this technique at numerous high pressure synchrotron beamlines and offline laboratories. However, the increased experimental throughput has revealed many limitations in existing software for handling the rapid measurement and the subsequent data-reduction. Here, we report the development of a collection of computer programs for sound speed measurements using the ultrasound pulse-echo technique, compatible with stepped multi-frequency, as well as broadband-pulse, couplant-corrected methods. The programs provide a highly interactive graphical interface, enable efficient measurement, exploration and near real-time analysis of the ultrasound data, and contain features useful for working with samples under high pressure and/or high temperature. The included analysis programs can alleviate the time required for data reduction from hours to less than a minute, allowing users to make timely and informed decisions regarding the appropriate experimental parameters.

Efficient data acquisition and training of collisional-radiative model artificial neural network surrogates through adaptive parameter space sampling

Abstract Effective plasma transport modeling of magnetically confined fusion devices relies on having an accurate understanding of the ion composition and radiative power losses of the plasma. Generally, these quantities can be obtained from solutions of a collisional-radiative (CR) model at each time step within a plasma transport simulation. However, even compact, approximate CR models can be computationally onerous to evaluate, and in-situ evaluation of these models within a larger plasma transport code can lead to a rigid bottleneck. As a way to bypass this bottleneck, we propose deploying artificial neural network (ANN) surrogates to allow rapid evaluation of the necessary plasma quantities. However, one issue with training an accurate ANN surrogate is the reliance on a sufficiently large and representative training and validation data set, which can be time-consuming to generate. In this work we explore a data-driven active learning and training routine to allow autonomous adaptive sampling of the problem parameter space to ensure a sufficiently large and meaningful set of training data is assembled for the network training. As a result, we can demonstrate approximately order-of-magnitude savings in required training data samples to produce an accurate surrogate.

Implementation of a High-Speed Multichannel Data Acquisition System for Magnetic Diagnostics and Plasma Centroid Position Control in ISTTOK

In tokamak and other fusion devices, magnetic control is the main tool that allows to regulate the plasma current, position and shape; it is in charge of actuating the desired plasma current waveform, steering the plasma position to a given set point and maintain the plasma shape close to a prescribed plasma equilibrium. This work describes the application of several physics concepts and computational tools in order to obtain a novel optimal controller for the plasma centroid position, which has been implemented and tested in the real-time plasma control system at the ISTTOK tokamak. A key point for the development of the new control system was the installation of a recently upgraded hardware, that numerically integrates in real-time the magnetic probes signals.

Improving the Event Data Server of the Fermilab Test Beam Data Acquisition System (OTSDAQ)

The Fermilab Test Beam Facility (FTBF) is a high-energy test beam used for precision tests of high-energy physics detectors. The FTBF has two beams lines, MTest and MCenter, which provides a variety particle types such as proton beam and secondary beams with muons, electrons, and kaons. The beam is variable in energy and intensity, and a target can be inserted into the beam to convert the protons to other particle types for users.
