Direct neutrino-mass measurement based on 259 days of KATRIN data

That neutrinos carry a nonvanishing rest mass is evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute mass holds relevance in fields from particle physics to cosmology. We report on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with the KATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium β-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. On the basis of the first five measurement campaigns, we derived a best-fit value of $m^{2}_{v} = -0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ eV 2 , resulting in an upper limit of m ν < 0.45 eV at 90% confidence level. Stemming from 36 million electrons collected in 259 measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level, and improved systematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN’s previous bound by a factor of almost two.

Five-day track forecast skills of WRF model for the western North Pacific tropical cyclones

In this study, the characteristics of simulated tropical cyclones (TCs) over the western North Pacific by a regional model (the WRF Model) are verified. We utilize 12-km horizontal grid spacing, and simulations are integrated for 5 days from model initialization. A total of 125 forecasts are divided into five clusters through the k-means clustering method. The TCs in the cluster 1 and 2 (group 1), which includes many TCs moving northward in the subtropical region, generally have larger track errors than for TCs in cluster 3 and 4 (group 2). The optimal steering vector is used to examine the difference in the track forecast skill between these two groups. The bias in the steering vector between the model and analysis data is found to be more substantial for group 1 TCs than group 2 TCs. The larger steering vector difference for group 1 TCs indicates that environmental fields tend to be poorly simulated in group 1 TC cases. Furthermore, the residual terms, including the storm-scale process, asymmetric convection distribution, or beta-related effect, are also larger for group 1 TCs than group 2 TCs. Therefore, it is probable that the large track forecast error for group 1 TCs is a result of unreasonable simulations of environmental wind fields and residual processes in the midlatitudes.

Overland flow numerical model prediction, Lower Triangle Region in East River Watershed, Colorado, 3 days

This data package contains numerical simulation results of surface flow variables such as flow velocity and water depth in Lower Triangle Region in East River Watershed, Colorado. The surface flow is a consequence of a high intensity rainfall event with a total duration of 3 days, available at a resolution of 10 minutes. The results are computed on triangular multiresolution meshes with resolutions ranging from 10 meter to 80 meter. The data package also contains a simulation on a uniform triangular mesh with a resolution of 10 meter. The simulations consider surface flow only and neglect subsurface flow, infiltration, and evapotranspiration. The purpose of the data is to assess the quality of a mesh refinement strategy.

Data from a four-day long microcosm experiment addressing the destabilization of artificial mineral-associated organic matter by model root exudates embedded in a soil matrix from the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (Gothic, CO, USA), 2019

This dataset provides data collected during a four-day long laboratory soil microcosm experiment testing the efficacy of root exudate-driven mineral-associated organic matter destabilization. This dataset contains four data files in comma-separate values (*.csv). The files provide the metadata and the experimental results on microbial respiration, MAOM-derived respiration, and sequential mineral-extractions. This data was used to produce the figures in Bölscher et al., 2026. The results of the experiment can be found in the open access article Bölscher et al., 2026 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.soilbio.2026.110276). Abstract: Mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is often considered stable, but root exudates can destabilize MAOM via various pathways. Theory and model system studies suggest that direct MAOM destabilization by strong ligands, like oxalic acid, or reducing agents, like catechol, is more effective than indirect, microbial-mediated MAOM destabilization, stimulated by less reactive compounds like glucose. Here, we demonstrate that the presence of a soil matrix alters the efficacy of exudate-driven MAOM destabilization pathways. Glucose and catechol destabilized significantly greater amounts of MAOM from ferrihydrite and aluminum hydroxide (Al (OH)3) embedded in a soil matrix than oxalic acid. Our findings indicate that indirect, microbial-mediated MAOM destabilization may play a larger role than direct MAOM destabilization in soil environments.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: How science earned Enrico Fermi a Nobel Prize – and saved his Jewish wife and children

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an annual commemoration designated by the United Nations that includes worldwide memorial services, vigils and more. January 27 is the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, which was the largest Nazi concentration camp operated by Nazi Germany during World War II.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Three Early Lab Love Stories

This Valentine’s Day revel in several remarkable relationships that occurred leading up to and during the Manhattan Project, the United States government’s effort to build the atomic bomb and help end World War II. Further details of the lives and work of early Lab staff can be found in the legacy collections housed at the National Security Research Center, LANL’s classified library and curator of unclassified legacy items.

An April Fools’ Day read from Lab history Famed physicist Richard Feynman’s safecracking, cipher-creating sense of play

Richard Feynman was fresh out of Princeton University’s doctoral program when recruited to assist in the creation of the atomic bomb at Los Alamos. In 1943, Lab director J. Robert Oppenheimer wrote that the 24-year-old was, “by all odds the most brilliant young physicist here, and everyone knows this.” Feynman attempted to live and examine life in a state of play and, as such, it’s only fitting to take a look back at the Nobel Prize winning scientist’s years at the wartime Lab as April Fools’ Day approaches.

Day-Ahead Probabilistic Forecasting of Net-Load and Demand Response Potentials with High Penetration of Behind-the-Meter Solar-plus-Storage

The goal of this project is to develop advanced methods for day-ahead net-load forecasting, by leveraging the state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. The developed models produce both point and probabilistic forecasts for a variety of use cases, and are versatile to work with different types of data sets. The innovation lies in the novel design of the architectures, leveraging the most recent advances in machine learning that have not been explored in power systems, accompanied by techniques in the broader artificial intelligence fields such as fuzzy systems. This project has achieved the following accomplishments: (1) preprocessing of over 10 data sets covering varying geographical regions, time horizons, and system levels, which form a robust foundation for training and evaluating forecasting models across a wide range of realistic grid scenarios; (2) development of an interactive web app that enables exploratory analysis of load and generation data, and supports better understanding of data trends, anomalies, and correlations, facilitating model development and stakeholder engagement; (3) implementation of over 10 benchmark models for point and probabilistic forecasting, which include a mix of conventional machine learning methods and state-of-the-art deep learning approaches, providing a comprehensive baseline for performance comparison and validation of the proposed models; (4) development of a fuzzy system based gradient boosting model, tailored for small (less than 3 years) data sets, which achieves a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 4% for point forecasting and a 20% improvement in average pinball loss for probabilistic forecasting; (5) development of a Transformer (a state-of-the-art deep learning architecture) based neural network model, tailored for large (3 years or more) data sets, which achieves a MAPE of 2% for point forecasting and a 20% improvement in average pinball loss for probabilistic forecasting; (6) development of a methodology for quantifying DR potential, and extensions of the previous models for multi-target forecasting of net load and DR potential, which achieve a MAPE of 10% for DR potential.
