Torque-Summing Brushless Motor

Torque channels function cooperatively but electrically independent for reliability. Brushless, electronically-commutated dc motor sums electromagnetic torques on four channels and applies them to single shaft. Motor operates with any combination of channels and continues if one or more of channels fail electrically. Motor employs single stator and rotor and mechanically simple; however, each of channels electrically isolated from other so that failure of one does not adversely affect others.

Modeling of DC spacecraft power systems

Future spacecraft power systems must be capable of supplying power to various loads. This delivery of power may necessitate the use of high-voltage, high-power dc distribution systems to transmit power from the source to the loads. Using state-of-the-art power conditioning electronics such as dc-dc converters, complex series and parallel configurations may be required at the interface between the source and the distribution system and between the loads and the distribution system. This research will use state-variables to model and simulate a dc spacecraft power system. Each component of the dc power system will be treated as a multiport network, and a state model will be written with the port voltages as the inputs. The state model of a component will be solved independently from the other components using its state transition matrix. A state-space averaging method is developed first in general for any dc-dc switching converter, and then demonstrated in detail for the particular case of the boost power stage. General equations for both steady-state (dc) and dynamic effects (ac) are obtained, from which important transfer functions are derived and applied to a special case of the boost power stage.

Static and Dynamic Effects of Lateral Carrier Diffusion in Semiconductor Lasers

Electron and hole diffusions in the plane of semiconductor quantum wells play an important part in the static and dynamic operations of semiconductor lasers. It is well known that the value of diffusion coefficients affects the threshold pumping current of a semiconductor laser. At the same time, the strength of carrier diffusion process is expected to affect the modulation bandwidth of an AC-modulated laser. It is important not only to investigate the combined DC and AC effects due to carrier diffusion, but also to separate the AC effects from that of the combined effects in order to provide design insights for high speed modulation. In this presentation, we apply a hydrodynamic model developed by the present authors recently from the semiconductor Bloch equations. The model allows microscopic calculation of the lateral carrier diffusion coefficient, which is a nonlinear function of the carrier density and plasma temperature. We first studied combined AC and DC effects of lateral carrier diffusion by studying the bandwidth dependence on diffusion coefficient at a given DC current under small signal modulation. The results show an increase of modulation bandwidth with decrease in the diffusion coefficient. We simultaneously studied the effects of nonlinearity in the diffusion coefficient. To clearly identify how much of the bandwidth increase is a result of decrease in the threshold pumping current for smaller diffusion coefficient, thus an effective increase of DC pumping, we study the bandwidth dependence on diffusion coefficient at a given relative pumping. A detailed comparison of the two cases will be presented.

A novel directly coupled gradostat

The original bidirectional compound chemostat (gradostat) described by Lovitt and Wimpenny has been simplified by making a more compact apparatus in which chemical gradients are established by diffusion between adjacent culture chambers. The experimental model (diffusion coupled (DC) gradostat) consisted of five chambers whose contents could be agitated by turbines rotating in the horizontal plane on a common shaft. Two biological experiments were designed to reveal the value of the DC gradostat. A methylotroph (Methylophilus methylotrophus) grown in a methanol gradient showed expected changes in cell viability as a function of position in the five vessel array. Cells of two species of photosynthetic bacteria (Rhodobacter capsulata and Rhodopseudomonas marina/agilis) with different salt sensitivities could be mixed and subsequently separated by the DC gradostat operating with a NaCl gradient of 0-3% w/v.

Investigation of possible lower hybrid emission from the NASA Lewis Bumpy Torus plasma

Radio frequency emission detected near the lower hybrid frequency of the NASA Lewis Bumpy Torus plasma is studied, using a simple detection system that consists of a spectrum analyzer and a 50-ohm miniature co-axial antenna concentrically located in a re-entrant quartz tube. The frequency shift of a broad emission peak is monitored as a function of the background pressure, electrode voltage, and the strength of the dc magnetic field. Simultaneous measurements of the average plasma density are made with a polarization diplexing microwave interferometer. Information from the experiment is discussed with particular reference to the role of atomic or molecular species of deuterium in the emissions, the strength of the dc magnetic field in the emitting region, the geometric location of the emitting region of the plasma, the lower hybrid plasma density as compared with the average plasma density, and the relation of the ion spoke geometry to the lower hybrid emission.

Application of small-signal modeling and measurement techniques to the stability analysis of an integrated switching-mode power system

Small-signal modeling techniques are used in a system stability analysis of a breadboard version of a complete functional electrical power system. The system consists of a regulated switching dc-to-dc converter, a solar-cell-array simulator, a solar-array EMI filter, battery chargers and linear shunt regulators. Loss mechanisms in the converter power stage, including switching-time effects in the semiconductor elements, are incorporated into the modeling procedure to provide an accurate representation of the system without requiring frequency-domain measurements to determine the damping factor. The small-signal system model is validated by the use of special measurement techniques which are adapted to the poor signal-to-noise ratio encountered in switching-mode systems. The complete electrical power system with the solar-array EMI filter is shown to be stable over the intended range of operation.

Computational modeling of properties

A simple model was developed to calculate the electronic transport parameters in disordered semiconductors in strong scattered regime. The calculation is based on a Green function solution to Kubo equation for the energy-dependent conductivity. This solution together with a rigorous calculation of the temperature-dependent chemical potential allows the determination of the dc conductivity and the thermopower. For wide-gap semiconductors with single defect bands, these transport properties are investigated as a function of defect concentration, defect energy, Fermi level, and temperature. Under certain conditions the calculated conductivity is quite similar to the measured conductivity in liquid 2-6 semiconductors in that two distinct temperature regimes are found. Under different conditions the conductivity is found to decrease with temperature; this result agrees with measurements in amorphous Si. Finally the calculated thermopower can be positive or negative and may change sign with temperature or defect concentration.

GMI-IPS: Processing & Visualization Software Used in ATom DC-8 Aircraft Studies

NASA's Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) deployed in each of the four seasons during 2016-2018, the DC-8 aircraft in order to establish global-scale datasets intended to improve the representation of chemically reactive gases in global atmospheric chemistry models (ACMs). The Global Modeling Initiative (GMI) executed simulations for each ATom flight using the GMI Chemistry Transport Model (GMI-CTM) to provide species concentrations of chemical gases along the DC-8 flight transects. To solve the problem of translating the GMI-CTM simulation data to the unique spatial resolutions of each ATom flight, the GMI ICARTT Processing Software (GMI-IPS) was developed. The GMI-IPS is written in Python and provides data processing, flight extraction, and visualization support for aircraft research projects using ICARTT format, which is a standard format for airborne instrument data. Additionally, the GMI-IPS interpolates global gridded model data from Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) to ICARTT compatible flight transects. Software classes for instruments and collections provided by the ATom DC-8 aircraft such as MER10, MMS, etc. are derived from a common base class. Other functionality provided by the GMI-IPS are: deriving missing flight entries along a transect, reading ICARTT entries from file, and providing Python data structures for storing flight and model information, and more. The GMI-IPS is GIT source controlled, has approximately 30,000 lines of code, and supports parallelization across data collections. It delivered GMI-CTM data for more than forty distinct DC-8 aircraft flights that took place under ATom. The output ICARTT files adhere to format standard V1.1, and pass the scan utility provided by NASA LaRC Airborne Science Data for Atmospheric Composition. This presentation will include a software and methods overview, and results from ATom, including assessments using the GMI-CTM showing how well observations from ATom flight transects represent a broader region.

A system for measuring methane fluxes from inland and coastal wetland environments

A CH4 measuring system with a sensitivity of 0.01 ppmv and a response time of 1 sec is described. Pulses are separable from moving and stationary readings, the device floats, and air velocity in the chamber can be controlled in the range 0-4.4 m/sec. The system is set on the water so that controlled speed air from beneath can enter an inner chamber and be pumped through a gas filter correlation system (GFC) before being returned to the chamber. The GFC mechanism yields an absorption signal in the form of a dc voltage, which a processor orders printed on a strip chart as a function of time. Detection of the CH4 amounts is through IR absorption, and the sensitivity of the instrument has been measured at .002-.051 g/sq m per day with air flows in the range 0.90-4.40 m/sec. The unit can be modified to detect CO and CO2, and further applications for low plant canopies and land surfaces are indicated.

Design of high-voltage, high-power, solid state remote power controllers for aerospace applications

Two general types of remote power controllers (RPC's), which combine the functions of a circuit breaker and a switch, were developed for use in dc aerospace systems. Power-switching devices used in the designs are the gate-turnoff thyristor (GTO) and MOSFET. The RPC's can switch dc voltages to 1200 V and currents to 1000 A. Seven different units were constructed and subjected to laboratory and thermal vacuum testing. Two of these were dual units that switch both positive and negative voltages simultaneously. The RPC's using MOSFET's have slow turnon and turnoff times which limit surge currents and voltage spiking from high di/dt. The GTO's have much faster transition times. All RPC's have programmable overload tripout proportional to I sq T and microsecond tripout for large overloads.

The dc power control for a liquid-fed resistojet

A simple breadboard power controller was designed and demonstrated for a new liquid-fed water resistojet. The 1-piece laboratory model thruster has an integrated vaporizer/superheater using a single heating element. Heater temperature was maintained at or near a preset reference value with the closed loop controller providing pulse width modulated (PWM) dc power into the thruster heater. A combined thruster, temperature readout, PWM transfer function was experimentally determined. This transfer function was used to design a proportional plus integral controller that demonstrated zero steady state error, conservative stability margins and adequate transient response to step changes in propellant flow rate, input voltage and temperature reference. Initial turn-on temperature overshoot from room temperature to a 650 C setpoint was 80 C. In addition, EMI was alleviated by reducing heater dI/dt and dV/dt using a simple diode-inductor-capacitor network. Based on limited initial tests, thruster preheat with no propellant flow was necessary to achieve stable system operation during startup. Breadboard power efficiency was 99 percent at 1 kW, and component mass was 0.4 kg excluding the power loss and mass of an input filter required for spacecraft integration.

Electrochemical Studies Of Aluminum Coated With Primer

Technical paper describes experiments using ac-impedance method of analyzing corrosion of metal surfaces and breakdown of protective coatings. Alternating-current-impedance scans provide more detailed information, indicating changes in corrosion rates, progressive deterioration of coatings, changes in metal surfaces, and reaction mechanisms. Changes in conditions of coatings detected by ac method before dc methods show increase in metal-corrosion current. Measurements of impedance as function of frequency provides sufficient data to enable resistances and capacitances to be determined by performing least-squares fit. Knowledge of dependence of these values on time leads to more detailed understanding of corrosion process.

A study of electric power transmission lines for use on the lunar surface

Analytical models have been developed to study the operating characteristics of electrical transmission lines for use on the lunar surface. Important design considerations for a transmission line operating on the lunar surface are mass, temperature, and efficiency. Transmission line parameters which impact these considerations include voltage, power loss, and waveform. The electrical and thermal models developed are used to calculate transmission line mass, size, and temperature as a function of voltage, geometry, waveform, location, and efficiency. The analyses include ac and dc for above and below ground operation. Geometries studied include a vacuum-insulated, two-wire transmission line and a solid-dielectric insulated, coaxial transmission line. A brief discussion of design considerations and the models developed is followed by results for parameter studies for both dc and ac transmission lines.
