Where are cirrus clouds and why are they there

The cirrus cloud climatology of Wylie and Menzel (1988) and some ancillary studies of cirrus clouds that have been made using the same data are summarized. The Wylie and Menzel climatology is a data set of cloud statistics extracted from the GOES/VAS satellite. With these data the geographical distributions of clouds, the seasonal changes, some diurnal changes, and also what atmospheric conditions cause the clouds can be described.

Ground and in-flight calibrations for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) nonscanning radiometers

This paper describes the algorithms and procedures used for in-flight calibration of the nonscanning radiometers used in the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) instruments. The computation of the count conversion coefficients used in the basic ERBE radiometric equations is described, as well as the determination of the offsets and time-dependent coefficients used to account for the in-flight changes in the radiometers. The calibration results for more than 5 years of ERBE data are summarized for all nonscanning radiometers. Discontinuities in the observed data, and the effects of these discontinuities are discussed. Applications of ERBE type calibration algorithms to the EOS/CERES platforms are suggested.

Toxicological approach to setting spacecraft maximum allowable concentrations for carbon monoxide

The Spacecraft Maximum Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) are exposure limits for airborne chemicals used by NASA in spacecraft. The aim of these SMACs is to protect the spacecrew against adverse health effects and performance decrements that would interfere with mission objectives. Because of the 1 and 24 hr SMACs are set for contingencies, minor reversible toxic effects that do not affect mission objectives are acceptable. The 7, 30, or 180 day SMACs are aimed at nominal operations, so they are established at levels that would not cause noncarcinogenic toxic effects and more than one case of tumor per 1000 exposed individuals over the background. The process used to set the SMACs for carbon monoxide (CO) is described to illustrate the approach used by NASA. After the toxicological literature on CO was reviewed, the data were summarized and separated into acute, subchronic, and chronic toxicity data. CO's toxicity depends on the formation of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in the blood, reducing the blood's oxygen carrying capacity. The initial task was to estimate the COHb levels that would not produce toxic effects in the brain and heart.

Analysis of GASP carbon monoxide data

Atmospheric carbon monoxide in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere for the period March 1977 through October 1978 was analyzed. The CO data are summarized and the distribution and variations in space and time of this gas are presented. The data show that the CO mixing ratios are higher in the troposphere than those in the stratosphere. In the Northern Hemisphere the highest value of CO mixing ratio occurs in spring, although more data are needed to verify these findings. Correlation coefficients among CO, O3, air temperature (T) and winds were calculated for different regions under different seasons. It was found that the CO correlates negatively with O3 above 20 degrees latitude and positively below that latitude. Case studies using the data of CO, O3, and T measured simultaneously were performed. Discussions and suggestions are made. Ozone data on seasonal basis is also summarized.

High resolution spectroscopic measurements of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide

A modified 1.83 meter Jarrell-Ash spectrometer is reported. The instrument was double passed and achieved a resolution of 0.05 cm at 15 micrometers. An integrating voltmeter was used to optimize the available integration time. Data were obtained in the 15 micrometer and 4.3 micrometer band of CO2 and the 4.6 micrometer and 2.3 micrometer bands of CO. The data are summarized and examples of typical spectra are given. All the data are stored on IBM cards.

Digital receiver simulation

Digital simulation of the data link for the Saturn-Uranus spacecraft design is summarized. The data link is a 40 watt, 400 MegaHertz, 44 bit-a-second link, a power starved link, and uses convolution coding. Aspects of the link of particular interest are atmospheric scintillation and the Doppler to data rate ratio. The major characteristics of the scintillation are modeled in terms of tapped delay lines. A candidate system design and receiver design is developed. A computer flow diagram depicting a routine for the error rate and one for acquisition is presented. Various coding algorithms are analyzed since the convolution code is sensitive to the distribution of error and the actual pattern of the error.

Seismology and space-based geodesy

The potential of space-based geodetic measurement of crustal deformation in the context of seismology is explored. The achievements of seismological source theory and data analyses, mechanical modeling of fault zone behavior, and advances in space-based geodesy are reviewed, with emphasis on realizable contributions of space-based geodetic measurements specifically to seismology. The fundamental relationships between crustal deformation associated with an earthquake and the geodetically observable data are summarized. The response and spatial and temporal resolution of the geodetic data necessary to understand deformation at various phases of the earthquake cycle is stressed. The use of VLBI, SLR, and GPS measurements for studying global geodynamics properties that can be investigated to some extent with seismic data is discussed. The potential contributions of continuously operating strain monitoring networks and globally distributed geodetic observatories to existing worldwide modern digital seismographic networks are evaluated in reference to mutually addressable problems in seismology, geophysics, and tectonics.

Europa Clipper Payload Verification and Validation: Avionics-Instrument Interface Test Campaign

NASA's Europa Clipper mission will investigate Jupiter's icy moon Europa using a payload suite consisting of nine instruments to address a range of scientific objectives concerning Europa's habitability. As the project proceeds past its Critical Design Review, confidence is being built in the system's ability to achieve mission objectives through the implementation of a rigorous payload verification and validation (V&V) program. As part of this payload V&V program, instrument box-level testing was performed by the payload team to verify select instrument-avionics interface requirements. This testing was performed at JPL using the avionics testbed's Bulk Data Storage Emulator (BDSEM) with visiting instrument Test Models. This paper summarizes the Data Link test campaign involving roughly four days of functional testing per instrument, including planning, testing methods, types of issues found, and the requirement closure process. Detail is also provided on the development, deployment, and validation of a standardized analysis tool used in data reviews. This testing verified requirements related to commanding rates, loss of link, packet format, clock counters, loopback test capability, and SpaceWire jitter and skew margins. Additional risk reduction testing of basic commanding, counter behavior, science data collection and transfer, and interface swapping was also performed. Because the BDSEM venue was not originally designed to be a run for record venue, the process of characterizing venue fidelity and establishing suitability for requirement closure using data collected in this venue will also be addressed. In order to close requirements, an extensible tool was developed to post-process instrument command and telemetry data from their original binary to a human-readable format and give visibility to errors detected within the data, such as packets with Cyclic Redundancy Check errors. This tool, called payload-packet-parser, is a Python 3.9 command line tool built using a variety of open-source Python libraries. Payload-packet-parser was designed to support parsing command and telemetry packets for all Europa Clipper instruments and additional analysis tools were developed for verification of specific information interface requirements. This test campaign, including post-processing using a single parsing and verification toolset, allowed for early interface testing, alleviating testing burdens on instrument teams and buying down risk on the instrument-avionics interface by finding hardware and software issues and idiosyncrasies prior to integration with system test venues. Over twenty issues were discovered across the payload, resulting in software updates and instrument rework well in advance of any system impacts. This paper concludes with an assessment of benefits and costs of this type of testing and lessons learned.
