Exploring Anomalous Photoelectron Angular Distributions in the Photoelectron Spectra of Gd 3 O 3 – : Study of Gd 3 O 2 – and Gd 3 O 3 – Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Anion photoelectron (PE) spectra of lanthanide oxide clusters obtained previously have exhibited anomalous photoelectron angular distributions which were attributed to strong PE–valence electron (PEVE) interactions. Here, to further explore this effect, we have obtained the PE spectra of Gd 3 O 2 – and Gd 3 O 3 – , two clusters that have similarly complex electronic structures but contrasting symmetries. The spectra exhibit manifolds of detachment transitions at similar binding energies in a 0.5 eV window of energy. The electron affinity of Gd 3 O 2 is measured to be 1.29 ± 0.05 eV, and that of Gd 3 O 3 is 1.31 ± 0.05 eV. As seen in previous studies on lanthanide oxide cluster anions in lower than conventional oxidation states, transitions in spectra obtained lower photon energies are more congested than those obtained with higher photon energy, a signature of strong PEVE interactions. While the detachment transitions have predominantly parallel photoelectron angular distributions (PAD), the PAD varies across the manifold of transitions in the PE spectrum of Gd 3 O 3 – in a way that suggests four different subgroups of transitions. Results of calculations on Gd 3 O 2 – suggest kite or V-shape structures with antiferromagnetic coupling between one of the 4f 7 subshells with the two others. Calculations on Gd 3 O 3 – more definitively point to ring structures with a nearly isoenergetic ferromagnetically coupled high spin (24-tet) state and a dectet state in which one of the 4f 7 subshells is antiferromagnetically coupled with the other two. Taking these results as qualitative, we propose that strong mixing between the unperturbed states predicted computationally leads to overlapping transitions with different PADs.

Density functional theory (DFT) study of UF 6 hydrolysis: reaction pathways, spectroscopy, and chemical kinetics

Depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF 6 ), a stockpiled byproduct of the nuclear fuel cycle, reacts readily with atmospheric humidity, but the gas-phase reaction mechanism and associated chemical kinetics are poorly understood. During the performance period we undertook development of a state-of-the-art ab initio gas-phase chemical kinetics simulation workflow to model the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluroride (UF 6 ). In doing so, we addressed several outstanding issues in the theoretical treatment of uranium-containing systems. At the outset it was unclear how to generate accurate estimates of kinetic and thermodynamic data for U-containing chemical reactions. Generation of such data has been made routine. Prior to our work, the literature associated with UF 6 hydrolysis were disparate and inaccurate. This body of work provides a modern and comprehensive theoretical assessment of the reaction mechanism, molecular clustering towards deposition, and chemical kinetics. New methodological implementations and software integrations resulting from this work are also highlighted. As much as possible, our predictions were validated against experimental data including particle morphologies, vibrational spectroscopy, atomization enthalpies, and kinetic rate constants. Nevertheless, we were unable to reconcile kinetic measurements with high-accuracy simulations.

Density Functional Theory Analysis of Candidate Tritium Permeation Barriers for Vanadium Alloys as a Fusion Structural Material

Vanadium alloys are being considered as a candidate structural material for the breeder blanket component of future fusion reactors due to their good thermal conductivity, low activation, and chemical compatibility with FLiBe. However, vanadium has a high hydrogen solubility, resulting in hydrogen diffusion and trapping in the vanadium structural alloy and lower than expected tritium breeding ratios. To mitigate the permeation of hydrogen into the structural alloy, a tritium permeation barrier will be coated onto the vanadium alloy. Multiple materials have been proposed as candidate tritium permeation barriers, but the extent to which each of these materials impacts hydrogen diffusion and trapping is still unknown. In this project, we perform atomic-scale calculations to narrow down the list of potential tritium permeation barrier candidates and to understand the mechanisms through which hydrogen diffusion is affected in these materials.

Noncollinear ground states of solids with a source-free exchange correlation functional

In this paper, we expand upon the source-free (SF) exchange correlation (XC) functional developed by Sangeeta Sharma and coworkers to plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) based on the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. This constraint is implemented by the current authors within the VASP source code, using a fast Poisson solver that capitalizes on the parallel three-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) implemented in VASP. Using this modified XC functional, we explore the improved convergence behavior that results from applying this constraint to the GGA-PBE+U+J functional. In the process, we compare the noncollinear magnetic ground state computed by each functional and their SF counterpart for a select number of magnetic materials in order to provide a metric for comparing with experimentally determined magnetic orderings. We observe significantly improved agreement with experimentally measured magnetic ground-state structures after applying the source-free constraint. Furthermore, we explore the importance of considering probability current densities in spin-polarized systems, even under no applied field. We analyze the XC torque as well, in order to provide theoretical and computational analyses of the net XC magnetic torque induced by the source-free constraint. Along these lines, we highlight the importance of properly considering the real-space integral of the source-free local magnetic XC field. Our analyses on probability currents, net torque, and constant terms draw additional links to the rich body of previous research on spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT), and pave the way for future extensions and corrections to the SF corrected XC functional.
