Longitudinal waves in a perpendicular collisionless plasma shock. IV - Gradient B.

The consideration of elastic waves in a Vlasov plasma of unmagnetized ions and magnetized electrons undergoing E x B electron drift and gradient B drift, pursued in the earlier three parts, is brought to conclusion in this last part of the longitudinal wave study in a collisionless plasma shock. Detailed calculations of the effects of the beta sub e dimensionless parameter on the E x B electron drift instability are presented. It is shown that the range of propagation of the elastic waves about the perpendicular remains quite narrow, and that, for oblique propagation, the already narrow angular range of unstable waves is decreased by increases in the value of the beta sub e dimensionless parameter. Also, increases in wave number generally reduce the growth rate and the angular range of propagation.

Study of the zinc-silver oxide battery system

Theoretical and experimental models for the evaluation of current distribution in flooded, porous electrodes are discussed. An approximation for the local current distribution function was derived for conditions of a linear overpotential, a uniform concentration, and a very conductive matrix. By considering the porous electrode to be an analog of chemical catalyst structures, a dimensionless performance parameter was derived from the approximated current distribution function. In this manner the electrode behavior was characterized in terms of an electrochemical Thiele parameter and an effectiveness factor. It was shown that the electrochemical engineering approach makes possible the organizations of theoretical descriptions and of practical experience in the form of dimensionless parameters, such as the electrochemical Thiele parameters, and hence provides useful information for the design of new electrochemical systems.

Relaxation of an unsteady turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate in an expansion tube

An analysis is presented for the relaxation of a turbulent boundary layer on a semi-infinite flat plate after passage of a shock wave and a trailing driver gas-driven gas interface. The problem has special application to expansion-tube flows. The flow-governing equations have been transformed into the Crocco variables, and a time-similar solution is presented in terms of the dimensionless distance-time variable alpha and the dimensionless velocity variable beta. An eddy-viscosity model, similar to that of time-steady boundary layers, is applied to the inner and outer regions of the boundary layer. A turbulent Prandtl number equal to the molecular Prandtl number is used to relate the turbulent heat flux to the eddy viscosity. The numerical results, obtained by using the Gauss-Seidel line-relaxation method, indicate that a fully turbulent boundary layer relaxes faster to the final steady-state values of heat transfer and skin friction than a laminar boundary layer. The results also give a fairly good estimate of the local skin friction and heat transfer for near steady-flow conditions.

The internal structure of the convective envelope of the sun

An axisymmetric hydrodynamic model of the sun consisting of a core at radiant equilibrium and a convective envelope is studied with consideration of gravitational forces, rotation, turbulence effects, and electromagnetic forces. The dimensionless parameters that control the equations of plasma motion within the sun and the boundary conditions are investigated; estimates are given for these parameters on the basis of experimental data and the existing theoretical models. Stability conditions are derived for convective equilibrium, developed cellular convection, and developed turbulent convection with consideration of rotation and turbulent Reynolds stresses. These conditions characterize the possible physical state of the matter in the convective envelope. Using estimates of the dimensionless parameters and models of some of them, a method of successive approximations is proposed for solution of the problem as a whole.

Side cracked plated subject to combined direct and bending forces

The opening mode stress intensity factor and the associated crack mouth displacement are comprehensively treated using planar boundary collocation results supplemented by end point values from the literature. Data are expressed in terms of dimensionless coefficients of convenient form which are each functions of two dimensionless parameters, the relative crack length, and a load combination parameter which uniquely characterizes all possible combinations of tension or compression with bending or counterbending. Accurate interpolation expressions are provided which cover the entire ranges of both parameters. Application is limited to specimens with ratios of effective half-height to width not less than unity.

A solution to the contact of two rough spherical surfaces

The influence of roughness on the interfacial pressure distribution in the contact of two spherical surfaces is considered. An approximate general solution is presented and it is shown that the pressure for all radii can be determined solely from a reference pressure which is, in turn, a function of two parameters - a dimensionless roughness and a dimensionless hardness. Values for the radius of contact are also presented.

Correlations by the entrainment theory of thermodynamic effects for developed cavitation in venturis and comparisons with ogive data

A semi-empirical entrainment theory was employed to correlate the measured temperature depression, Delta T, in a developed cavity for a venturi. This theory correlates Delta t in terms of the dimensionless numbers of Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber and Peclet, and dimensionless cavity length, L/D. These correlations are then compared with similar correlations for zero and quarter caliber ogives. In addition, cavitation number data for both limited and developed cavitation in venturis are presented.

Determination of constant-volume balloon capabilities for aeronautical research

The proper application of constant-volume balloons (CVB) for measurement of atmospheric phenomena was determined. And with the proper interpretation of the resulting data. A literature survey covering 176 references is included. the governing equations describing the three-dimensional motion of a CVB immersed in a flow field are developed. The flowfield model is periodic, three-dimensional, and nonhomogeneous, with mean translational motion. The balloon motion and flow field equations are cast into dimensionless form for greater generality, and certain significant dimensionless groups are identified. An alternate treatment of the balloon motion, based on first-order perturbation analysis, is also presented. A description of the digital computer program, BALLOON, used for numerically integrating the governing equations is provided.

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts for materials of low elastic modulus. 1: Fully flooded conjunction

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication concepts of conjunctions of elliptical form are applied to materials of low elastic modulus. The influence of the ellipticity parameter and the dimensionless speed, load, and material parameters on minimum film thickness for these materials has been investigated. The ellipticity parameter was varied from a ball on plate configuration to a configuration approaching a line contact. The dimensionless speed and load parameters were varied by 1 order of magnitude. Seventeen different cases were used to generate minimum and central film thickness relations. Contour plots are presented that illustrate the pressure distribution and film thickness in the conjunction.

Isothermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts. III - Fully flooded results

Procedures outlined by the authors in an earlier publication (1976) on theoretical formulation for isothermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication of point contacts are used to assess the influence of the ellipticity parameter and the dimensionless speed, load, and material parameters on minimum film thickness. Conditions equivalent to using solid materials of bronze, steel, and silicon nitride, and lubricants of paraffinic and naphthenic mineral oils are considered in obtaining the exponent on the dimensionless material parameter. Thirty-four different cases are used to generate the fully flooded film thickness formula. A fully flooded condition is said to exist when the inlet distance of the conjunction ceases to influence in any significant way the minimum film thickness. Contour plots are also shown that indicate in detail the pressure spike and two side lobes in which the minimum film thickness occurs.

Remote sensing of optical properties in continuously stratified waters

The radiative transfer equation is solved by Monte Carlo methods for natural waters in which the optical properties are distributed with depth. It is demonstrated that interpreting the reflectance of a continuously stratified ocean in terms of an equivalent homogeneous ocean yields the average of a particular combination of the water's optical properties over the dimensionless penetration depth. Although in general the dimensionless penetration depth cannot be remotely measured, a method is presented for estimating the actual penetration depth from the remote observations if the medium's absorption coefficient is known, independent of depth, and sufficiently large. The application of this to the remote measurement of the vertical distribution of suspended sediments is discussed in detail.

Convection due to surface-tension gradients

The use of dimensionless parameters to study fluid motions that could occur in a reduced-gravity environment is discussed. The significance of the Marangoni instability is considered, and the use of dimensionless parameters to investigate problems such as thermo and diffusocapillary flows is described. Characteristics of fluid flow in space are described, and the relation and interaction of motions due to capillarity and buoyancy is examined.

Correlations of thermodynamic effects for developed cavitation

The net positive suction head (NPSH) requirements for a pump are determined by the combined effects of cavitation, fluid properties, pump geometry, and pump operating point. An important part of this determination is the temperature depression (Delta T). Correlations are presented of the temperature depression for various degrees of developed cavitation on venturis and ogives. These correlations, based on a semi-empirical entrainment theory, express Delta T in terms of the dimensionless numbers of Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber, and Peclet, and dimensionless cavity length (L/D). The Delta T data were obtained in Freon 114, hydrogen and nitrogen for the venturis and in Freon 113 and water for the ogives.

Analytic theory of orbit contraction due to atmospheric drag

Theory of space vehicle flight in near vacuum and in a planetary atmosphere is unified for the case of a spherically symmetric atmosphere with exponential variation of density with height. Dimensionless equations of motion are established that bridge the gap between satellite theory and entry theory. Integration is done by Poincare's method of perturbations. Solutions for the dimensionless semimajor axis are numerically obtained.

Prediction of fragment velocities and trajectories

Analytical techniques are described which predict: (1) the velocities of two unequal fragments from bursting cylindrical pressure vessels; (2) the velocity and range of portions of vessels containing a fluid which, when the vessel ruptures, causes the fragment to accelerate as the fluid changes from the liquid to the gaseous phase; and (3) the ranges of fragments subjected to drag and lift forces during flight. Numerous computer runs were made with various initial conditions in an effort to generalize the results for maximum range in plots of dimensionless range versus dimensionless velocity.

Starved elastohydrodynamic lubricated elliptical contacts

A theoretical study of the influence of lubricant starvation on film thickness and pressure in hard and soft elliptical elastohydrodynamic contacts is presented. From the results for both hard and soft EHL contacts a simple and important dimensionless inlet boundary distance is specified. This inlet boundary defines whether a fully flooded or a starved condition exists in the contact. Furthermore it is found that the film thickness for a starved condition could be written in dimensionless terms as a function of the inlet distance parameter and the film thickness for a fully flooded condition. Contour plots of pressure and film thickness in and around the contact are shown for fully flooded and starved conditions. The theoretical findings are compared directly with results obtained experimentally.
