Buckling of structures; Proceedings of the Symposium, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., June 17-21, 1974

The papers deal with such topics as the buckling and post-buckling behavior of plates and shells; methods of calculating critical buckling and collapse loads; finite element representations for thin-shell instability analysis; theory and experiment in the creep buckling of plates and shells; creep instability of thick shell structures; analytical and numerical studies of the influence of initial imperfections on the elastic buckling of columns; mode interaction in stiffened panels under compression; imperfection-sensitivity in the interactive buckling of stiffened plates; buckling of stochastically imperfect structures; and the Liapunov stability of elastic dynamic systems. A special chapter is devoted to design problems, including the design of a Mars entry 'aeroshell', and buckling design in vehicle structures. Individual items are announced in this issue.

Stability of the Wave Bearing on an Elastic Support

Numerical computation predicts that an elastic support can substantially improve the stability of the wave bearing if the dynamic stiffness and damping of this support are in a specific range of values. To experimentally validate this prediction, the housing of a gas bearing was mounted on elastic O-rings and the threshold of sub-synchronous whirl motion was experimentally observed when the bearing runs unloaded with a rotating speed up to 30,000 RPM. The O-ring system was also dynamically characterized by measuring its stiffness and damping at various frequencies up to 500 Hz. Good correlation exists between the experimental data and numerical prediction.

Comparison between thermochemical and phase stability data for the quartz-coesite-stishovite transformations

Phase stability and elasticity data have been used to calculate the Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy changes at 298 K and 1 bar associated with the quartz-coesite and coesite-stishovite transformations in the system SiO2. For the quartz-coesite transformation, these changes disagree by a factor of two or three with those obtained by calorimetric techniques. The phase boundary for this transformation appears to be well determined by experiment; the discrepancy, therefore, suggests that the calorimetric data for coesite are in error. Although the calorimetric and phase stability data for the coesite-stishovite transformation yield the same transition pressure at 298 K, the phase-boundary slopes disagree by a factor of two. At present, it is not possible to determine which of the data are in error. Thus serious inconsistencies exist in the thermodynamic data for the polymorphic transformations of silica.

Design of a Thruster Vector Servo-Elastic Filter

This presents a method to improve the thruster vector servo elasticity (TVSE) stability. TVSE is the coupling between the TVC system engine dynamics and the vehicle flexible modes. It can lead to instability of the flexible modes due to the energy injection from the thrust. For large boosters with heavy TVC engine, TVSE is more likely to cause instability. This instability is part of the plant dynamics and is not detected by the flight control. In this paper, the TVSE is treated as a disturbance rejection problem with the inertial force of the flexible motion viewed as an external disturbance to the TVC actuator control system. By effectively rejecting this disturbance, the engine can be decoupled from the flexible dynamics thus improving TVSE stability. The actuator disturbance transfer function is modified by inserting a TVSE filter into the control system. The filter aims to reduce the magnitude and introduce phase lead of the disturbance transfer function over the TVSE sensitive frequency range while maintaining adequate stability margins of the actuator control system. A prefilter is also designed for good command tracking. The filter and prefilter resulting from this method are usually of low order and can be included to the existing actuator controller if the controller is programmable. This method was demonstrated for a hydraulic Simplex actuator model. Its applications to SLS B1 and B2 TVC actuator are also described. B2 actuator controller is modified based on this method. The tradeoff between TVSE stability and the control system stability can be balanced by adjusting the amount of phase lead introduced by the TVSE filter. This method provides a useful way to solve the TVSE instability issue without costly and time-consuming a TVC system redesign. This method is based on the basic control principles of loop shaping and disturbance rejection and has been proven to be effective under proper circum-stances.

The influence of dynamic inflow and torsional flexibility on rotor damping in forward flight from symbolically generated equations

The combined effects of blade torsion and dynamic inflow on the aeroelastic stability of an elastic rotor blade in forward flight are studied. The Helicopter Equations for Stability and Loads (HESL) program is extended to derive the governing equations of motion for the blade, and a Lagrangian formulation is used to obtain the equations in generalized coordinates. The program generates the steady-state and linearized perturbation equations in symbolic form and then codes them into FORTRAN subroutines. The coefficients for each equation and for each mode are identified through a numerical program; the latter can also be used to obtain the harmonic balance equations. The governing multiblade equations are derived explicitly using HESL. These equations can accommodate any number of elastic blade modes. Stability results are presented for several hingeless rotor blade structural models, and the influence of dynamic inflow in forward flight with an elastic hingeless rotor is investigated.
