High elongation elastomers

A new class of liquid curable elastomers with unusual strength and elasticity has been developed at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, China Lake. Over the years, studies have been conducted on polymer structure and its influence on the mechanical properties of the ensuing composites. Different tools, including nuclear magnetic resonance, have been used. This paper presents a summary of the factors controlling the mechanical behavior of composites produced with the new liquid curable elastomers, including the effects of plasticizers. It also provides an overview of the nuclear magnetic resonance study on polymer structure, the composition and properties of some live and inert formulations produced at China Lake, and some possible peace-time applications for these new elastomeric materials.

Human Motion Perception and Smooth Eye Movements Show Similar Directional Biases for Elongated Apertures

Although numerous studies have examined the relationship between smooth-pursuit eye movements and motion perception, it remains unresolved whether a common motion-processing system subserves both perception and pursuit. To address this question, we simultaneously recorded perceptual direction judgments and the concomitant smooth eye movement response to a plaid stimulus that we have previously shown generates systematic perceptual errors. We measured the perceptual direction biases psychophysically and the smooth eye-movement direction biases using two methods (standard averaging and oculometric analysis). We found that the perceptual and oculomotor biases were nearly identical suggesting that pursuit and perception share a critical motion processing stage, perhaps in area MT or MST of extrastriate visual cortex.

Germination and elongation of flax in microgravity

This experiment was conducted as part of a risk mitigation payload aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-101. The objectives were to test a newly developed water delivery system, and to determine the optimal combination of water volume and substrate for the imbibition and germination of flax (Linum usitatissimum) seeds in space. Two different combinations of germination paper were tested for their ability to absorb, distribute, and retain water in microgravity. A single layer of thick germination paper was compared with one layer of thin germination paper under a layer of thick paper. Paper strips were cut to fit snugly into seed cassettes, and seeds were glued to them with the micropyle ends pointing outward. Water was delivered in small increments that traveled through the paper via capillary action. Three water delivery volumes were tested, with the largest (480 microliters) outperforming the 400 microliters and 320 microliters volumes for percent germination (90.6%) and root growth (mean=4.1 mm) during the 34-hour spaceflight experiment. The ground control experiment yielded similar results, but with lower rates of germination (84.4%) and shorter root lengths (mean=2.8 mm). It is not clear if the roots emerged more quickly in microgravity and/or grew faster than the ground controls. The single layer of thick germination paper generally exhibited better overall growth than the two layered option. Significant seed position effects were observed in both the flight and ground control experiments. Overall, the design of the water delivery system, seed cassettes and the germination paper strip concept was validated as an effective method for promoting seed germination and root growth under microgravity conditions. c2003 COSPAR. Shoot inversion-induced ethylene in Pharbitis nil induces the release of apical dominance by restricting shoot elongation

Shoot inversion induces outgrowth of the highest lateral bud (HLB) adjacent to the bend in the stem in Pharbitis nil. In order to determine whether or not ethylene produced by shoot inversion plays a direct role in promoting or inhibiting bud outgrowth, comparisons were made of endogenous levels of ethylene in the HLB and HLB node of plants with and without inverted shoots. That no changes were found suggests that the control of apical dominance does not involve the direction action of ethylene. This conclusion is further supported by evidence that the direct application of ethylene inhibitors or ethrel to inactive or induced lateral buds has no significant effect on bud outgrowth. The hypothesis that ethylene evolved during shoot inversion indirectly promotes the outgrowth of the highest lateral bud (HLB) in restricting terminal bud (TB) growth is found to be supported by the following observations: (1) the restriction of TB growth appears to occur before the beginning of HLB outgrowth; (2) the treatment of the inverted portion of the shoot with AgNO3, an inhibitor of ethylene action, dramatically eliminates both the restriction of TB growth and the promotion of HLB outgrowth which usually accompany shoot inversion; and (3) the treatment of the upper shoot of an upright plant with ethrel mimics shoot inversion by retarding upper shoot growth and inducing outgrowth of the lateral bud basipetal to the treated region.

Gibberellin (GA3) enhances cell wall invertase activity and mRNA levels in elongating dwarf pea (Pisum sativum) shoots

The invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) purified from cell walls of dwarf pea stems to homogeneity has a molecular mass of 64 kilodaltons (kD). Poly(A)+RNA was isolated from shoots of dwarf pea plants, and a cDNA library was constructed using lambda gt11 as an expression vector. The expression cDNA library was screened with polyclonal antibodies against pea cell wall invertase. One invertase cDNA clone was characterized as a full-length cDNA with 1,863 base pairs. Compared with other known invertases, one homologous region in the amino acid sequence was found. The conserved motif, Asn-Asp-Pro-Asn-Gly, is located near the N-terminal end of invertase. Northern blot analysis showed that the amount of invertase mRNA (1.86 kb) was rapidly induced to a maximal level 4 h after GA3 treatment, then gradually decreased to the control level. The mRNA level at 4 h in GA3-treated peas was fivefold higher than that of the control group. The maximal increase in activity of pea cell wall invertase elicited by GA3 occcured at 8 h after GA3 treatment. This invertase isoform was shown immunocytochemically to be localized in the cell walls, where a 10-fold higher accumulation occurred in GA3-treated tissue compared with control tissue. This study indicates that the expression of the pea shoot cell-wall invertase gene could be regulated by GA3 at transcriptional and/or translational levels.

Elongation growth of the leaf sheath base of Avena sativa seedlings: regulation by hormones and sucrose

The leaf sheath base of the seedling of Avena sativa was characterized for growth response to hormones and sucrose. Six day old plants, raised under a 10:14 hr light:dark cycle, were excised at the coleoptilar node and 1 cm above the node for treatment. The growth of the leaf sheath base was promoted by gibberellic acid (GA3) and this response was dose dependent. The lag to response initiation was approximately 4 hr. Growth with or without GA3 (10 micromoles) was transient, diminishing appreciably after 48 hr. The addition of 10 mM sucrose greatly prolonged growth; the effect of GA3 and sucrose was additive. Neither indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) nor the cytokinin N6-benzyladenine (BA), alone or in combination, promoted the growth of leaf sheath bases. However, both significantly inhibited the action of GA3. The inhibitory effect of IAA was dose dependent and was not affected by the addition of BA or sucrose. These results indicate that the growth of leaf sheath bases of Avena sativa is promoted specifically by gibberellin, that this action depends on the availability of carbohydrates from outside of the leaf sheath base, and that the promotional effect of GA3 can be modified by either auxins or cytokinins.

Purification and characterization of soluble (cytosolic) and bound (cell wall) isoforms of invertases in barley (Hordeum vulgare) elongating stem tissue

Three different isoforms of invertases have been detected in the developing internodes of barley (Hordeum vulgare). Based on substrate specificities, the isoforms have been identified to be invertases (beta-fructosidases EC 3.2.1.26). The soluble (cytosolic) invertase isoform can be purified to apparent homogeneity by diethylaminoethyl cellulose, Concanavalin-A Sepharose, organo-mercurial Sepharose, and Sephacryl S-300 chromatography. A bound (cell wall) invertase isoform can be released by 1 molar salt and purified further by the same procedures as above except omitting the organo-mercurial Sepharose affinity chromatography step. A third isoform of invertase, which is apparently tightly associated with the cell wall, cannot be isolated yet. The soluble and bound invertase isoforms were purified by factors of 60- and 7-fold, respectively. The native enzymes have an apparent molecular weight of 120 kilodaltons as estimated by gel filtration. They have been identified to be dimers under denaturing and nondenaturing conditions. The soluble enzyme has a pH optimum of 5.5, Km of 12 millimolar, and a Vmax of 80 micromole per minute per milligram of protein compared with cell wall isozyme which has a pH optimum of 4.5, Km of millimolar, and a Vmax of 9 micromole per minute per milligram of protein.

Elongated Tetrakaidecahedron Micromechanics Model for Space Shuttle External Tank Foams

The results of microstructural characterization studies and physical and mechanical testing of BX-265 and NCFI24-124 foams are reported. A micromechanics model developed previously by the authors is reviewed, and the resulting equations for the elastic constants, the relative density, and the strength of the foam in the principal material directions are presented. The micromechanics model is also used to derive equations to predict the effect of vacuum on the tensile strength and the strains induced by exposure to vacuum. Using a combination of microstructural dimensions and physical and mechanical measurements as input, the equations for the elastic constants and the relative density are applied and the remaining microstructural dimensions are predicted. The predicted microstructural dimensions are in close agreement with the average measured values for both BX-265 and NCFI24-124. With the microstructural dimensions, the model predicts the ratio of the strengths in the principal material directions for both foams. The model is also used to predict the Poisson s ratios, the vacuum-induced strains, and the effect of vacuum on the tensile strengths. However, the comparison of these predicted values with the measured values is not as favorable.

The Origin of Primitive Cells, Nutrient Intake, and Non-Enzymatic Elongation of Encapsulated Nucleotides

Fatty acids and fatty alcohols are commonly found in experiments simulating the prebiotic 'soup'. These amphiphiles can be synthesized under prebiotic conditions, at least as long as the molecules are chemically relatively simple and do not need to be enantiomerically pure. In the context of topical origin-of-life theories, two distinct formation pathways for amphiphiles have been described; one related to geophysical sites, such as marine hydrothermal systems, and another to extraterrestrial sources, such as the proto-solar nebula, which was fed by interplanetary and interstellar nebulae. The chemical analysis of each provides individual characteristic challenges.

HST/STIS Observations of Ganymede's Auroral Ovals at Eastern Elongation

We report on new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of Ganymede s auroral emissions obtained (to be obtained) during two visits with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations of the first visit, a five orbits, were obtained on November 19, 2010 and the second visit, also a five orbits, is scheduled for opposition in October/November 2011. We will present results of the full campaign, in case of a successful execution of the second visit. Our observations cover more than half a cycle of system III longitudes of Ganymede s positions within Jupiter s magnetosphere for each visit. We analyze the observations with respect to brightness and locations of Ganymede auroral ovals. Our goal is to set constrains on the interaction of Ganymede s mini-magnetosphere with Jupiter s magnetosphere, Ganymede s magnetic field and plasma environment, and if possible on Ganymede s neutral atmosphere.
