Recent efforts of vapour-phase strategies for EUV resist toward high- and hyper-NA extreme ultraviolet lithography

Extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL, λ = 13.5 nm) is critical for sub-1 nm technology nodes but remains constrained by inherent trade-offs among resolution, line-edge roughness (LER), and sensitivity. Stochastic effects originating from photon shot noise, low-energy secondary electron blur, and the random distribution of resist components further limit its advancement toward high numerical-aperture (NA, NA = 0.55) and hyper-NA (NA ≥0.75) EUVL. While the optimization of spin-on chemically amplified resists (CARs) continues, metal-oxide resists (MORs) have emerged as strong candidates for next-generation EUVL by incorporating metals with high EUV absorption coefficients, which enhances both resist sensitivity and etch resistance during pattern transfer. Besides spin-coating, recent advances in vapour-phase techniques, such as vapour-phase infiltration (VPI), chemical vapour deposition (CVD), and molecular atomic layer deposition (MALD), offer promising pathways to achieve new resist platforms, such as dry resists, that satisfy the stringent thickness and uniformity requirements of next-generation EUVL. These methods enable the direct incorporation of metal species into existing resist matrices or the formation of hybrid inorganic–organic resist platforms, thereby improving film uniformity, etch durability, and pattern fidelity while mitigating stochastic defects. This review highlights the latest advancements in vapour-phase-synthesized EUV resists, emphasizing material design, lithographic performance, and the underlying exposure mechanisms. Although still emerging, vapour-phase strategies are paving the way for an all-dry integration framework that could improve EUV patterning workflows and meet the demands of future technology nodes.

Heavy ion induced e + e − pair production: Theoretical and preliminary experimental efforts

The production of real e + e − pairs is an important quantum electrodynamics phenomenon, that could have significant implications on low energy heavy ion dynamics. Here, we employ an established Schwingerinspired theory to study this effect in nuclear disintegrations. We extend the current framework with a Monte Carlo approach to include non-perturbative contributions. Simultaneously, we supplement our study with a preliminary experimental procedure, via the use of the Global Spectrometer for Positron and Electron Characterization developed at the Texas Petawatt Laser facility of the University of Texas at Austin. Theory and experiment agree within one order of magnitude, which signals promise for further investigations.

EDGE COVID-19: a web platform to generate submission-ready genomes from SARS-CoV-2 sequencing efforts

Abstract Summary Genomics has become an essential technology for surveilling emerging infectious disease outbreaks. A range of technologies and strategies for pathogen genome enrichment and sequencing are being used by laboratories worldwide, together with different and sometimes ad hoc, analytical procedures for generating genome sequences. A fully integrated analytical process for raw sequence to consensus genome determination, suited to outbreaks such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, is critical to provide a solid genomic basis for epidemiological analyses and well-informed decision making. We have developed a web-based platform and integrated bioinformatic workflows that help to provide consistent high-quality analysis of SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data generated with either the Illumina or Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT). Using an intuitive web-based interface, this workflow automates data quality control, SARS-CoV-2 reference-based genome variant and consensus calling, lineage determination and provides the ability to submit the consensus sequence and necessary metadata to GenBank, GISAID and INSDC raw data repositories. We tested workflow usability using real world data and validated the accuracy of variant and lineage analysis using several test datasets, and further performed detailed comparisons with results from the COVID-19 Galaxy Project workflow. Our analyses indicate that EC-19 workflows generate high-quality SARS-CoV-2 genomes. Finally, we share a perspective on patterns and impact observed with Illumina versus ONT technologies on workflow congruence and differences. MIBiG 3.0: a community-driven effort to annotate experimentally validated biosynthetic gene clusters

Abstract With an ever-increasing amount of (meta)genomic data being deposited in sequence databases, (meta)genome mining for natural product biosynthetic pathways occupies a critical role in the discovery of novel pharmaceutical drugs, crop protection agents and biomaterials. The genes that encode these pathways are often organised into biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). In 2015, we defined the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG): a standardised data format that describes the minimally required information to uniquely characterise a BGC. We simultaneously constructed an accompanying online database of BGCs, which has since been widely used by the community as a reference dataset for BGCs and was expanded to 2021 entries in 2019 (MIBiG 2.0). Here, we describe MIBiG 3.0, a database update comprising large-scale validation and re-annotation of existing entries and 661 new entries. Particular attention was paid to the annotation of compound structures and biological activities, as well as protein domain selectivities. Together, these new features keep the database up-to-date, and will provide new opportunities for the scientific community to use its freely available data, e.g. for the training of new machine learning models to predict sequence-structure-function relationships for diverse natural products. Training Efforts in the Exascale Computing Project

This article delineates the training activities carried out under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Exascale Computing Project (ECP). While some of these activities are specific to members of ECP, others can be beneficial to the community at large. Additionally, we report on training opportunities and resources that the broad Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E) community can tap into; we seek to increase awareness about these resources, which we expect to go beyond ECP’s scope and life cycle.

Assessing China’s efforts to pursue the 1.5 degrees C warming limit

Given the increasing interest in keeping global warming below 1.5 ?, a key question is what this would mean for China’s emission pathway, energy restructuring and decarbonization. By conducting a multi-model study, we find that the 1.5 ?-consistent goal would require China to reduce its carbon emissions and energy consumption by over 90% and 39%, respectively, compared to the No Policy case. Negative emission technologies play an important role in achieving near-zero emissions, with captured carbon averagely accounting for 23% of the total reductions in 2050. Our multi-model comparisons reveal large differences in necessary emission reductions across sectors, while what’s consistent is that the power sector is required to achieve full decarbonization by 2050. The cross-model averages indicate that China’s accumulated policy costs may amount to 2.75-5.73% of its GDP by 2050, given the 1.5 ? warming limit.

Nuclear Criticality Safety Training: Needs and Efforts

Nuclear criticality safety (NCS) training is essential and required for NCS professionals to ensure that fissionable materials outside of nuclear reactors are safely processed, handled, stored, and transported. Furthermore, the requirement of training in NCS is mandated in several international and domestic documents. In this regard, management has an obligation to establish an NCS training program that provides confidence in the continuing proficiency of personnel, and supervisors must ensure that their staff is suitably trained. Training of all personnel in nuclear facilities is required to support the robust performance of operations. There is a continuing need to maintain, enhance, and develop new training courses to support the NCS community. This paper provides an outline of some of the ongoing and future training courses in the United States to support the field of NCS.

COVID-19-associated school closures and related efforts to sustain education and subsidized meal programs, United States, February 18-June 30, 2020

Pre-emptive school closures are frontline community mitigation measures recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for implementation during severe pandemics. This study describes the spatiotemporal patterns of publicly announced school closures implemented in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and assesses how public K-12 districts adjusted their methods of education delivery and provision of subsidized meals. During February 18–June 30, 2020, we used daily systematic media searches to identify publicly announced COVID-19–related school closures lasting ≥1 day in the United States (US). We also collected statewide school closure policies from state government websites. Data on distance learning and subsidized meal programs were collected from a stratified sample of 600 school districts. The first COVID-19–associated school closure occurred on February 27, 2020 in Washington state. By March 30, 2020, all but one US public school districts were closed, representing the first-ever nearly synchronous nationwide closure of public K-12 schools in the US. Approximately 100,000 public schools were closed for ≥8 weeks because of COVID-19, affecting >50 million K-12 students. Of 600 districts sampled, the vast majority offered distance learning (91.0%) and continued provision of subsidized meal programs (78.8%) during the closures. Despite the sudden and prolonged nature of COVID-19–associated school closures, schools demonstrated flexibility by implementing distance learning and alternate methods to continue subsidized meal programs.

Toward a least-effort principle for evaluating prices of elements as indicators of sustainability

In this article, we explore simplifying mechanisms in materials economics for conceptionally organizing the flows of chemical elements into society. We use the concept of rank, which plays a crucial role in information theory where power laws are involved, and is a useful measure for seeking extremal principles. Borrowing from an analogy to Zipf’s law leads to a power-law relationship between abundance and rank that—pressing the Zipf’s law analogy further—may suggest that the price paid for elemental materials optimizes efficient utilization. Factors such as weight, volume, and moles in the earth's crust or in global mining production of elements are used in our analysis. For this research, 42 elements with price and production data for the year 2010 (a relatively typical year) were considered. We observe that the role of the volume from global mining production dominates in materials economics and indicate that elements such as Te and He should be sold at prices at leas ~ 100–1000 times more than their present price for efficient utilization.

The US effort towards a muon collider

A multi-TeV muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. There has been significant physics interest on Muon Colliders recently as indicated by the number of publications, relevant workshops, Snowmass activities but also the P5 report. This study describes a possible set of R&D and deliverables of the muon collider accelerator R&D program in the U.S. We describe high-priority studies to be performed in the first phase that will address critical questions for deciding the future plan for a muon collider design. The goal of these studies is to firm up choices for the most challenging components of a muon collider design, and to propose and begin testing and prototyping of components and systems that are needed to have confidence in and inform our specification choices. Key areas wherein the US can provide critical contributions to the newly formed international muon collider collaboration will be discussed as well.

NA-22 Write for Consortium Efforts

We are asked to look into the improvements for the measurement of Pu of a variety of material types (MT): MT41 (Pu-242, 20 – 60% enriched), MT42 (Pu-242 > 60% enrichment), and MT-82 (Np-237). Many of these are legacy items that were packaged years ago (Fig 1&2), and when the items are re-packaged for long-term storage, they must be re-measured using either NDA (nondestructive analysis methods or radiochemical methods. It is of interest to improve the NDA and radiochemistry to reduce the un-certainty in the measurements, as in the case of larger items (250 g to 2 kg items) the uncertainty in measurements makes it difficult to certify the mass of the material down to the 0.5 g accountability requirement per DOE orders by only doing NDA measurement. It would be of interest to look into methods to improve the detection of these materials, which would not only benefit the weapon manufacturing community, but also has the ability to significantly improve the non-proliferation community.
