Hybrid Theory of Electron-Hydrogenic Systems Elastic Scattering

Accurate electron-hydrogen and electron-hydrogenic cross sections are required to interpret fusion experiments, laboratory plasma physics and properties of the solar and astrophysical plasmas. We have developed a method in which the short-range and long-range correlations can be included at the same time in the scattering equations. The phase shifts have rigorous lower bounds and the scattering lengths have rigorous upper bounds. The phase shifts in the resonance region can be used to calculate very accurately the resonance parameters.

Absolute Definition of Phase Shift in the Elastic Scattering of a Particle from Compound Systems

The projection of the target wave function on the total wave function of a scattered particle interacting with the target system is used to define an absolute phase shift including any multiples of pi. With this definition of the absolute phase shift, one can prove rigorously in the limit of zero energy for s-wave electrons scattered from atomic hydrogen that the triplet phase shift must approach a nonzero multiple of pi. One can further show that at least one pi of this phase shift is not connected with the existence of a bound state of the H- ion.

A determination of relativistic shock jump conditions using Monte Carlo techniques

Monte Carlo techniques are used, assuming isotropic elastic scattering of all particles, to calculate jump conditions in parallel relativistic collisionless shocks in the absence of Fermi acceleration. The shock velocity and compression ratios are shown for arbitrary flow velocities and for any upstream temperature. Both single-component electron-positron plasma and two-component proton-electron plasmas are considered. It is shown that protons and electrons must share energy, directly or through the mediation of plasma waves, in order to satisfy the basic conservation conditions, and the electron and proton temperatures are determined for a particular microscopic, kinetic-theory model, namely, that protons always scatter elastically. The results are directly applicable to shocks in which waves of scattering superthermal particles are absent.

A covariant multiple scattering series for elastic projectile-target scattering

A covariant formulation of the multiple scattering series for the optical potential is presented. The case of a scalar nucleon interacting with a spin zero isospin zero A-body target through meson exchange, is considered. It is shown that a covariant equation for the projectile-target t-matrix can be obtained which sums the ladder and crossed ladder diagrams efficiently. From this equation, a multiple scattering series for the optical potential is derived, and it is shown that in the impulse approximation, the two-body t-matrix associated with the first order optical potential is the one in which one particle is kept on mass-shell. The meaning of various terms in the multiple scattering series is given. The construction of the first-order optical potential for elastic scattering calculations is described.

Quasi-elastic nuclear scattering at high energies

The quasi-elastic scattering of two nuclei is considered in the high-energy optical model. Energy loss and momentum transfer spectra for projectile ions are evaluated in terms of an inelastic multiple-scattering series corresponding to multiple knockout of target nucleons. The leading-order correction to the coherent projectile approximation is evaluated. Calculations are compared with experiments.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV.

The elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere was studied at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory. Preliminary data resulting from this study, which include the proton laboratory scattering angle, the laboratory differential cross section, the proton center-of-mass scattering angle, and the center-of-mass differential cross section, are tabulated, given graphically, and analyzed.

Differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections for elastic electron scattering by neon - 5 to 100 eV

Relative elastic-scattering differential cross sections were measured in the 5-100-eV impact energy and 10-145 deg angular ranges. Normalization of these cross sections was achieved by utilizing accurate total electron-scattering cross sections. A phase-shift analysis of the angular distributions in terms of real phase shifts has been carried out. From the differential cross sections, momentum-transfer cross sections were obtained and the values of the critical energy and angle were established (associated with the lowest value of the differential cross section) as 62.5 + or - 2.5 eV and 101.7 deg + or - 1.5 deg, respectively. The present phase shifts, the critical parameters, and differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections are compared to previous experimental and theoretical results. The error associated with the present data is about 10 percent.

Elastic Electron Scattering by Laser-Excited (sup 138)Ba (...6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1)) Atoms

The result of a joint experimental and theoretical study concerning elastic electron scattering by laser-excited (sup 138)Ba (...6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1)) atoms are presented. From these studies, we extracted differential scattering cross sections (DCS's) and collision parameters for elastic scattering by the coherently prepared (sup 1)P(sub 1) atoms.

Improved Optics For Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering

Improved optical train devised for use in light-scattering measurements of quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) and laser spectroscopy. Measurements performed on solutions, microemulsions, micellular solutions, and colloidal dispersions. Simultaneous measurements of total intensity and fluctuations in total intensity of light scattered from sample at various angles provides data used, in conjunction with diffusion coefficients, to compute sizes of particles in sample.

Elastic electron scattering cross sections for molecular hydrogen

Using an electron-beam - molecular-beam apparatus and employing the relative flow technique, ratios of the differential elastic scattering cross sections (DCSs of H2 to He were measured at incident electron energies of 15-100 eV and over the angular range of 10-125 degrees. From these ratios, the absolute elastic DCSs for H2 were determined by normalization to accurate, available elastic DCSs of He. Since pure rotational structure was not resolved in this work, the DCSs reported are the sum of elastic and rotational excitations of H2 at room temperature. The reliability of the relative flow normalization to He was checked at each energy and angle by performing similar elastic DCS measurements on Ne (for which the cross sections are known). The resulting absolute Ne DCSs were found to be in good agreement (within 10 percent with the Ne elastic DCSs measured previously (Register and Trajmar, 1984). From the DCSs, integral and momentumtransfer cross sections were calculated. The present results are compared with other recent measurements.

Low-energy elastic differential scattering of He/++/ by He.

Experimental results are developed for the relative elastic differential scattering of He(++) by He for collision energies in the range 4 equal to or less than E equal to or less than 75 eV. In the analysis of the data, semiclassical considerations are utilized, assuming that the dynamics of the scattering is governed solely by the B and E states of He2(++). It is shown that existing ab initio calculations for the intermolecular potentials predict differential cross sections which are not in particularly good agreement with the experimental data.

Backward elastic pd scattering at 316, 364, 470 and 590 MeV

Preliminary results are reported from a part of the data obtained at the NASA Space Radiation Effect Laboratory for the elastic scattering of protons by deuterons in the backward hemisphere. The data is averaged over a proton angle interval which corresponds to the angular resolution on the correlation angle, given the proton bin used in the data analysis.

Differential elastic electron scattering cross sections for SO2

Differential cross sections for elastic electron scattering by SO2 were measured by utilizing a modulated, crossed-beam method and calibration against He. The energy and angular ranges were from 5 to 50 eV and from 12 to 156 deg, respectively. The present results are compared with earlier data of Orient et al. (1982), and it is suggested that their cross section values should be increased by about a factor of two.

A description of electron heating with an electrostatic potential jump in a parallel, collisionless, fire hose shock

The electron heating required if protons scatter elastically in a parallel, collisionless shock is calculated. Near-elastic proton scattering off large amplitude background magnetic field fluctuations might be expected if the waves responsible for the shock dissipation are generated by the fire hose instability. The effects of an electrostatic potential jump in the shock layer are included by assuming that the energy lost by protons in traversing the potential jump is converted into electron thermal pressure. It is found that the electron temperature increase is a strong function of the potential jump. Comparison is made to the parallel shock plasma simulation of Quest (1987).
