Renewal: Coherent control of spin states in organic electronics – discovery and investigation of complex room-temperature magnetic quantum excitations

In the course of four funding cycles of this project, its research focused on the exploration and understanding of spin-dependent electronic processes in organic semiconductors. It aimed to investigate the potential of harnessing the spin degree of freedom in organic materials for various applications such as spin electronics, quantum information, sensors, and as well as quantum coherent spin phenomena of charge carrier states in organic semiconductors, with the aim to develop room-temperature-based quantum applications. Specifically, the project aimed to: Apply new diagnostic tools, i.e. spin spectroscopy techniques, for paramagnetic charge carrier states in organic semiconductors, based on coherent control with pulsed electron spin resonance to understand spin relaxation and spin mixing mechanisms in organic semiconductor materials and devices such as OLEDs. Explore the nature of charge carrier spin-coupling and pathways for its manipulation to control the physical behaviors of these materials. This involves investigating spin interactions through materials structure, composition, morphological dependencies, isotopic effects, and externally applied electric and magnetic fields, with the goal to manipulate electrical and optical material properties by adjusting spin-orbit, spin-dipolar, spin-exchange, as well as spin-hyperfine interactions to open up this materials class for new applications. Study spin-dependent charge carrier transport and recombination and how these observables are governed by spin-propagation, especially coherent spin propagation as well as collective spin-effects such as the spin-Dicke effect and resonant multi-photon magnetic dipole transitions. The project utilized pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance (pEDMR) and pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (pODMR) techniques over a wide frequency range. These techniques enabled the observation and quantification of various spin-spin coupling types, including spin-exchange, spin-dipolar, hyperfine, and spin-orbit interactions. The project will leverage low- to mid-frequency pEDMR/pODMR facilities and collaboration with the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

Method and apparatus for determining return stroke polarity of distant lightning

A method is described for determining the return stroke polarity of distant lightning for distances beyond 600 km by detecting the electric field associated with a return stroke of distant lightning, and processing the electric field signal to determine the polarity of the slow tail of the VLF waveform signal associated with the detected electric field. The polarity of the return stroke of distant lightning is determined based upon the polarity of the slow tail portion of the waveform.

The physics of heterodyne detection in the far-infrared: Transition from electric-field to photon-absorption detection in a simple system

The history of heterodyne detection is reviewed from the radiowave to the optical regions of the electromagnetic spectrum with emphasion the submillimeter/far infrared. The transition from electric field to photon absorption detection in a simple system is investigated. The response of an isolated two level detector to a coherent source of incident radiation is calculated for both heterodyne and video detection. When the processes of photon absorption and photon emission cannot be distinguished, the relative detected power at double- and sum-frequencies is found to be multiplied by a coefficient, which is less than or equal to unity, and which depends on the incident photon energy and on the effective temperature of the system.

Detecting Short Circuits: Post Accident Electric Vehicle Battery Safety Check

Fast and accurate detection of soft short circuits (SCs) in the battery packs of damaged electric vehicles is needed by first responders and mechanics to mitigate the potential risk from battery fires that may occur hours, days, or weeks after an accident. Here, this paper presents an SC-detection algorithm for potentially damaged lithium-ion batteries that works quickly and without a priori knowledge of the battery-pack chemistry, capacity, state of charge, or state of health. The proposed universal SC-detection algorithm is designed to be implemented on an inexpensive handheld device that can connect to and monitor the voltages of all cells in a pack. Transient filtering and linear-quadratic state observation provide estimates of normalized SC current for every cell in the pack. Cells with SC-current estimates outside a sigma-based threshold are detected. Simulations, experiments, and electric vehicle (EV) crash data are used to verify the speed, sensitivity, and accuracy of the method, demonstrating 96% accurate detection of 0.0027 C SCs in under 1 h for 5S cell groups in the lab and no false positives for crashed Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Tesla vehicles without SCs.

Nanometer-Scale Measurement of Grid Finger Electrical Conduction Pathways to Detect Series Resistance Degradation of Utility-Scale Silicon Solar Cells

Here, we report on an electrical conduction mechanism for series resistance (Rs) degradation observed in a utility-scale photovoltaic power plant by imaging the local resistance at the Ag/Si interface of the c-Si front metallization. Scanning spreading resistance microscopy imaging with nanometer (nm) scale spatial resolution revealed that the number of point or small-area electrical contacts decreased substantially in a degraded cell compared to an unaffected cell, demonstrating the root cause of Rs degradation. The decrease in electrical contacts is likely caused by a structural change - the Ag particles in contact with the Si cell (or via a nm-thickness tunneling glass layer) aggregate into bulk Ag, and a highly resistive glass frit forms a belt shape at the Ag/Si interface. This resistive belt, with a thickness of ~1 um, blocks the current conduction from the cell emitter to the Ag grid. Our microscopy results help to unravel unambiguously the degradation mechanism and demonstrate an example of the multiscale characterization approach for understanding degradation in field-weathered PV module.

Extension of Cable Electrical Assessment Techniques to Detect and Discriminate Radiation Aging on Cable Insulation Systems (Abstract)

The purpose of this study of the electrical responses of gamma radiation aged low voltage nuclear cables is to advance tools to determine cable condition (extent of damage) and identify degradation location along the cable length. The developed technology will provide nuclear plant operators with the options to focus cable repair, mitigation, or replacement efforts locally and avoid wholesale cable replacement.

Detection and imaging of electric fields, using polarized neutrons

A method and corresponding apparatus are provided for measuring neutron spin precession in an electric field with high sensitivity suitable for practical applications in non-destructive testing, imaging, and the like. Production of a neutron beam with a polarization vector P is followed by transmitting the spin-polarized neutron beam through a sample region in which there is a target generating an electric field, polarization-analyzing the transmitted neutron beam with an analyzing direction orthogonal to P, detecting an intensity of the polarization-analyzed neutron beam; and mapping the detected neutron-beam intensity to a field-strength value for the target electric field.

Hybrid Modeling of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Electric Powertrain for Fault Detection and Diagnostics

This paper shows the application of hybrid physics-informed machine learning to a representative electric powertrain for unmanned aerial vehicles. The model is composed of physics-derived principles and empirical equations, as well as fully connected networks that are strategically placed within the model to substitute equations that are subject to large uncertainty. Polynomial fit driven by heuristics or empirical observations can be substituted by more flexible networks that can minimize the error between model predictions and observations without being restricted to a predefined functional form. This modeling strategy allows training of networks deep inside the model and unknown parameters in a single learning stage. It has already been applied to Li-ion batteries in the past, and in this work, we extend the applications to other components of an electric powertrain, namely electronic speed controller with pulse-width modulation, and brushless DC motor with connected propeller. Training and testing of the model is carried out using experimental data from Li-ion battery discharge and powertrain testing in a laboratory environment.

Electrical Charging Hazards Originating from the Surface (ECHOS): Understanding the Martian Electro-Meteorological Environment

In 1999, the NASA/Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) enterprise selected a number of payloads to fly to the Martian surface in an 03 opportunity (prior to the MPL loss). Part of a proposed experiment, ECHOS, was selected to specifically understand the electrical charging hazards from tribocharged dust in the ambient atmosphere, in dust devils, and in larger storms. It is expected that Martian dust storms become tribocharged much like terrestrial dust devils which can possess almost a million elementary charges per cubic centimeter. The ECHOS package features a set of instruments for measuring electric effects: a radio to detect AC electric fields radiating from discharges in the storm,a DC electric field system for sensing electrostatic fields from concentrations of charged dust grains, and a lander electrometer chain for determining the induced potential on its body and MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle) during the passages of a charged dust storm. Given that electricity is a systemic process originating from wind-blown dust, we also proposed to correlate the electrical measurements with fundamental fluid/meteorological observations, including wind velocity and vorticity, temperature, and pressure. Triboelectricity will also affect local chemistry, and chemical-sensing devices were also considered a feature of the package. The primary HEDS objectives of the ECHOS sensing suite is to discover and monitor the natural electrical hazards associated with dust devils and storms, and determine their enviro-effectiveness on human systems. However, ECHOS also has a strong footprint in the overarching science objectives of the Mars Surveyor Program.
