User Friendly Web-Based Tool to Assess the Energy Efficiency and Durability of Residential Wall Retrofits

According to the U.S. Department of Energy Windows and Building Envelope Research and Development Roadmap for Emerging Technologies, building envelope wall energy loss in the United States accounts for about 5.9 x 1010 kWh or 2 quads of energy annually, costing homeowners and occupants billions of dollars. Enclosure retrofits targeting these losses can save significant energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and save occupants millions of dollars over time. Older homes, built before 1992 when DOE’s Building Energy Codes Program was established, represent approximately 68 percent of the residential building stock in the country, often having significant air leakage and inadequate insulation. Homes with little to no air sealing or insulation have heating and cooling losses that can represent a substantial portion of utility bills.High-performance building envelope retrofit systems are rarely selected for retrofit applications. Current solutions are expensive and/or unfamiliar to many designers, builders, contractors, and code officials and therefore are perceived as risky. The dominant perceived risk is durability specifically related to condensation and moisture accumulation in the building envelope component. The Building Science Advisor (BSA) is a rule-based expert system web-based tool that was originally developed to assist building professionals in designing energy efficient and durable wall systems for new construction. With the present focus being placed on upgrading the existing building stock, a retrofit module has been developed that, based on the location, existing construction, and planned retrofit strategy, provides recommendations on how to address the retrofit in a manner that will perform in accordance with IECC 2018 building code and not create a durability problem. This paper will describe the development of this tool and demonstrate its features and capabilities.

Winnett Public School District Energy Improvements

The Winnett Public School District Energy Improvement Project was funded through the U.S. Department of Energy's Renew America's Schools Program, which supports rural and underserved school districts in upgrading aging facilities and improving energy performance. The completed improvements directly advance the program's objectives by replacing the District's outdated coal-fired heating system with a modern, high-efficiency propane boiler system, while also enhancing ventilation systems and building envelope performance throughout the school. These upgrades provide a more reliable heating system and improved indoor air quality, creating a healthier and more comfortable environment for students and staff. In addition, replacing the aging boiler system has reduced long-term maintenance demands for one of Montana's most rural school districts, allowing the District to redirect limited financial resources toward other critical needs.

Passive Energy-Saving Solutions for Clothes Dryers: A Modeling and Experimental Study for Improved Efficiency and Affordability

Dryers are integral appliances in modern households, yet their significant power consumption remains a critical challenge for reducing energy bills and upgrades. This work presents the outcomes of a comprehensive investigation aimed at lowering the operating energy costs of the dryer through modeling and experimental approaches. Specifically, the objectives of this research are twofold: (1) to reduce energy consumption without negatively impacting drying performance or time; and (2) to ensure affordability by developing retrofittable solutions characterized by low cost and a quick payback period. These strategies promise universal applicability to all dryer categories, encompassing both gas and electric models, by tackling core issues such as unnecessary heat loss and excess energy supply, both prevalent across dryer designs. Our methodology combines robust modeling frameworks and experimental validation to target energy efficiency improvements through three primary pathways: (1) effective heat loss management using ultralow-cost insulation materials tailored for dryer systems; (2) heat management across the drying cycle, facilitated by passive heat transfer mechanisms, and (3) optimization of heat supply to the load to ensure precise energy delivery, minimizing waste. These innovations are designed to seamlessly integrate with existing dryer configurations, providing a scalable and retrofittable solution that ensures affordability without requiring substantial redesigns or expensive components. Using these methods, the study demonstrates improvement opportunities in dryer energy consumption while maintaining the desired performance. The modeling component utilizes computational simulations to evaluate the thermal and energy performance of these innovations under varied operational conditions, providing foundational insights for experimental design. By addressing critical areas such as heat loss, energy recovery, and supply optimization, this work proposes impactful solutions for lowering the energy costs in domestic clothes dryers. The ultralow-cost, retrofittable nature of the proposed strategies ensures widespread adoption potential across diverse dryer categories, making significant strides toward affordable household energy practices.

Hythane production from brewery wastewater‐generated biogas using a membrane electrochemical cell

Converting organic wastes into hythane, a blend of hydrogen (5% to 25%) and methane (75% to 95%), will not only reduce waste discharge but also maximize energy recovery. Herein, a membrane electrochemical cell was investigated to produce hythane from biogas generated in anaerobic digestion of brewery wastewater (BW). The key parameters including current densities, electrolyte concentrations, and biogas flow rates were examined in batch tests. Under an optimal condition (210 mA, 100 mM electrolyte, 1 mL min −1 of biogas flow), the system achieved the production of hythane containing 70.6% ± 1.1% CH 4 , 27.3% ± 0.5% H 2 , and 2.1% ± 1.6% CO 2 (corresponding to 91.1% ± 6.4% CO 2 removal). Meanwhile, the H 2 S concentration was decreased from 513 to 2 ppm, 99.9% ± 0.2% removal. Energy efficiency of this system was estimated 61.8% ± 10.7%, and energy output increased by 54.4% ± 10.6% with biogas upgrading to hythane. Furthermore, these results encourage further exploration of electrochemical approach for simultaneous biogas upgrading and hythane production.

Progress Towards Microcalorimeter Gamma Spectroscopy Analysis for Nuclear Fuel Separations

The High Efficiency and Resolution Microcalorimeter Spectrometer, 400 pixels (HERMES-400) is an ultra-high resolution gamma-ray spectrometer at Idaho National Laboratory’s Materials and Fuels Complex. HERMES-400 is intended to enable precise nondestructive analysis of advanced fuel cycle materials. Key upgrades and repairs of the instrument were performed this year to improve performance. First, the fourth and final microcalorimeter detector module was installed, meeting the milestone for its integration into the system. Operation with all four modules enables higher detector efficiency than any previous microcalorimeter gamma-ray system. Second, a thinner magnetic shield was installed. This shields the sensitive microcalorimeter pixels from stray magnetic fields while allowing transmission of lower-energy gamma rays, which are important to isotopic analysis. Finally, the cryostat, which provides cooling of the modules to their operating temperature, was found to have a helium coolant leak, which was repaired. HERMES-400 is in a stable state to perform repeated, long-term gamma-ray measurements with good detector efficiency and energy resolution. In FY25, irradiated TRISO fuel and salts from advanced electrochemical recycling techniques are candidates for microcalorimeter measurements. A final upgrade of the magnetic shielding and vibration damping of the system is also planned to maximize the system performance.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction: controlling adsorbate affinity to tailor reaction products

Every year, Haber-Bosch nitrogen fixation to form ammonia releases immense volumes of CO2. At the same time, nitrate contamination from untreated wastewater threatens human health across the US. Development of circular processes to efficiently upgrade waste nitrate for reuse is critical to sustainably address this growing environmental hazard. Electrochemical reduction of nitrate operates at ambient temperatures and pressures, and can leverage distributed renewable energy sources and water as a hydrogen source for ammonia production. However, current catalysts lack electron efficiency in reducing nitrate versus water, lack selectivity in forming ammonia as a product, or rely on expensive rare metals, making widespread implementation unfeasible. To overcome these limitations, this proposal seeks a mechanistic understanding of nitrate electrochemical reduction on earth abundant metals and their alloys, with the goal of identifying active-site properties that improve both Faradaic efficiency and product selectivity. This insight will extend to other electrocatalytic reductive process that compete with water reduction.

The ATLAS experiment software on ARM

With an increased dataset obtained during the Run 3 of the LHC at CERN and the even larger expected increase of the dataset by more than one order of magnitude for the HL-LHC, the ATLAS experiment is reaching the limits of the current data processing model in terms of traditional CPU resources based on x86_64 architectures and an extensive program for software upgrades towards the HL-LHC has been set up. The ARM architecture is becoming a competitive and energy efficient alternative. Some surveys indicate its increased presence in HPCs and commercial clouds, and some WLCG sites have expressed their interest. Chip makers are also developing their next generation solutions on ARM architectures, sometimes combining ARM and GPU processors in the same chip. Consequently it is important that the ATLAS software embraces the change and is able to successfully exploit this architecture. We report on the successful porting to ARM of the Athena software framework, which is used by ATLAS for both online and offline computing operations. Furthermore we report on the successful validation of simulation workflows running on ARM resources. For this we have set up an ATLAS Grid site using ARM compatible middleware and containers on Amazon Web Services (AWS) ARM resources. The ARM version of Athena is fully integrated in the regular software build system and distributed in the same way as other software releases. In addition, the workflows have been integrated into the HEPscore benchmark suite which is the planned WLCG wide replacement of the HepSpec06 benchmark used for Grid site pledges. In the overall porting process we have used resources on AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and CERN. A performance comparison of different architectures and resources will be discussed.

Physics potential of the IceCube Upgrade for atmospheric neutrino oscillations

The IceCube Upgrade is an extension of the existing IceCube Neutrino Observatory and will be deployed in the 2025–2026 austral summer. It will significantly improve the sensitivity of the detector to atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The existing 86-string IceCube array contains a dense in-fill known as DeepCore which is optimized to measure neutrinos with energies down to a few GeV. The IceCube Upgrade will consist of seven new densely instrumented strings placed within the DeepCore volume to further enhance the performance in the GeV energy range. The additional strings will feature new optical modules, each containing multiple photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), in contrast to the existing modules that each contain a single PMT. This will more than triple the number of PMT channels with respect to the current IceCube configuration, allowing for improved detection efficiency and reconstruction performance at GeV energies. We describe necessary updates to simulation, event selection, and reconstruction to accommodate the higher data rates observed by the upgraded detector and the addition of multi-PMT modules. We determine the expected sensitivity of the IceCube Upgrade to the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters sin 2 ⁡𝜃 23 and Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{32}$, the appearance of tau neutrinos and the neutrino mass ordering. The IceCube Upgrade will provide neutrino oscillation measurements that are of similar precision to those from accelerator experiments, while providing complementarity by probing higher energies and longer baselines, and with different sources of systematic uncertainties.
