Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

During the period June 1, 1986 through November 30, 1986, progress was made in the following areas: undetected error probability and throughput analysis of a concatenated coding scheme; capacity and cutoff rate analysis of concatenated codes; concatenated codes using bandwidth efficient trellis inner codes; bounds on the minimum free Euclidean distance of bandwidth efficient trellis codes; and construction of multidimensional bandwidth efficient trellis codes for use as inner codes in a concatenated coding system.

Error control techniques for satellite and space communications

The performance of bandwidth efficient trellis inner codes using two-dimensional MPSK signal constellations in a NASA concatenated coding is summarized. Work was also continued on trellis coded modulation using multi-dimensional signal sets. Achievable lower bounds on free distance trellis codes were proved and the existence of good trellis coded modulation (TCM) schemes were established for a variety of signal constellations. The performance of TCM schemes on fading channels is being investigated. Preliminary results indicate that bandwidth efficient trellis coding is feasible on such channels, but that the important design parameter is no longer the minimum free Euclidean distance.

The performance of trellis coded multilevel DPSK on a fading mobile satellite channel

The performance of trellis coded multilevel differential phase-shift-keying (MDPSK) over Rician and Rayleigh fading channels is discussed. For operation at L-Band, this signalling technique leads to a more robust system than the coherent system with dual pilot tone calibration previously proposed for UHF. The results are obtained using a combination of analysis and simulation. The analysis shows that the design criterion for trellis codes to be operated on fading channels with interleaving/deinterleaving is no longer free Euclidean distance. The correct design criterion for optimizing bit error probability of trellis coded MDPSK over fading channels will be presented along with examples illustrating its application.

Trellis coding with asymmetric modulations

Through the asymmetric design of signal constellations, it often becomes possible to obtain a performance gain over conventional symmetric constellations combined with trellis coding. Attention is given to the joint design of n/(n+1) trellis codes and asymmetric 2 exp (n+1)-point signal constellations having no bandwidth expansion relative to an uncoded 2 exp n-point symmetric signal set. The asymptotic performance gains due to coding and asymmetry are explained in terms of the minimum free Euclidean distance of the trellis; examples are given which show the performance gain due to the asymmetry of the signal set. Since asymmetry does not affect bandwidth or power requirements, these improvements come at little or no cost.

Source counts in the chronometric cosmology

The chronometric cosmology (a static, homogeneous, and hence nonevolving model proposed by Segal) is unable to explain the steep number versus flux law N(S) for quasars or extragalactic radio sources. The explanation given by Segal to explain the steep N(S) laws gives at best a small increase over a Euclidean N(S) proportional to S exp-1.5, and requires that the source spectral index be close to but greater than zero to create the effect. For typical radio spectral indices of roughly 0.75, the chronometric model cannot give a quantitative fit to the excess number of 1-3 Jy sources that the standard cosmology attributes to evolution. Thus the chronometric model can explain a steep N(S) law only for flat spectrum sources, while the observations show the steepest N(S) law for steep spectrum sources. Furthermore, the observed N(S) law for ultraviolet excess quasars is steeper than the steepest possible chronometric prediction.

Approximate methods for black hole collisions

The head-on collision of two nonrotating black holes, initially falling toward each other with speed of approach equal to escape velocity, is studied. The initial-value problem for the two-black-hole configuration is solved by giving the extrinsic curvature on a Euclidean space slice, with the equal masses of the two holes and their separation as free parameters. An approximating space-time is then constructed by stacking up a whole sequence of initial-value slices with decreasing separation between the black holes. The space-time singularities at the centers of the two black holes collide at some instant of time, and after that time the space-time so constructed is just the Schwarzschild solution with mass equal to the total mass of both black holes. The approximating space-time describes the coalescence of the event horizons, but contains no gravitational waves.

Bandwidth efficient block codes for M-ary PSK modulation

A class of bandwidth efficient block codes for M-ary PSK modulation is presented. A soft-decision decoding for this class of codes is devised. Some specific short codes for Quad Phase Shift Key (QPSK), 8-PSK and 16-PSK modulations are constructed. These codes have good minimum squared Euclidean distances and provide 2 to 5.8 dB coding gains over uncoded QPSK modulation without (or with little) bandwidth expansion. The complete weight distributions of these specific codes are determined. Based on these weight distributions, their error probabilities are evaluated. Some of these codes have simple trellis structures and hence can be decoded by Viterbi decoding algorithm with relatively simple implementation. Moreover, the codes are very suitable for use as inner codes for various cascaded coding schemes with Reed-Solomon codes as outer codes.

A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control

A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control in data communications is presented. The scheme is achieved by concatenating a Reed-Solomon outer code and a bandwidth efficient block inner code for M-ary PSK modulation. Error performance of the scheme is analyzed for an AWGN channel. It is shown that extremely high reliability can be attained by using a simple M-ary PSK modulation inner code and relatively powerful Reed-Solomon outer code. Furthermore, if an inner code of high effective rate is used, the bandwidth expansion required by the scheme due to coding will be greatly reduced. The proposed scheme is particularly effective for high speed satellite communication for large file transfer where high reliability is required. Also presented is a simple method for constructing block codes for M-ary PSK modulation. Some short M-ary PSK codes with good minimum squared Euclidean distance are constructed. These codes have trellis structure and hence can be decoded with a soft decision Viterbi decoding algorithm.

Initial conditions and quantum cosmology

A theory of initial conditions is necessary for a complete explanation of the presently observed large scale structural features of the universe, and a quantum theory of cosmology is probably needed for its formulation. The kinematics of quantum cosmology are reviewed, and some candidates for a law of initial conditions are discussed. The proposal that the quantum state of a closed universe is the natural analog of the ground state for closed cosmologies and is specified by a Euclidean sum over histories is sketched. When implemented in simple models, this proposal is consistent with the most important large-scale observations.

Numerical results on the transcendence of constants involving pi, e, and Euler's constant

The existence of simple polynomial equations (integer relations) for the constants e/pi, e + pi, log pi, gamma (Euler's constant), e exp gamma, gamma/e, gamma/pi, and log gamma is investigated by means of numerical computations. The recursive form of the Ferguson-Fourcade algorithm (Ferguson and Fourcade, 1979; Ferguson, 1986 and 1987) is implemented on the Cray-2 supercomputer at NASA Ames, applying multiprecision techniques similar to those described by Bailey (1988) except that FFTs are used instead of dual-prime-modulus transforms for multiplication. It is shown that none of the constants has an integer relation of degree eight or less with coefficients of Euclidean norm 10 to the 9th or less.

Bandwidth-efficient high-speed coded trellis modulation

A burst-mode coded trellis modulation system is discussed which is capable of 200-Mbit/s information rate transmission over nonlinear satellite transponders whose center frequencies are separated by 100 MHz. An overall real bandwidth efficiency of 2 bit/s per Hz of the allocated spectrum is projected. Convolutional codec and 8-PSK modulation subsystems together maximize the minimum Euclidean distance between the modulated codeword sequences in the overall coded trellis, resulting in a 4.3-dB asymptotic coding advantage over an uncoded 8-PSK system signalling at the same information rate over the same channel. The system performance has been evaluated by computer simulation.

Remote sensing of earth terrain

Two monographs and 85 journal and conference papers on remote sensing of earth terrain have been published, sponsored by NASA Contract NAG5-270. A multivariate K-distribution is proposed to model the statistics of fully polarimetric data from earth terrain with polarizations HH, HV, VH, and VV. In this approach, correlated polarizations of radar signals, as characterized by a covariance matrix, are treated as the sum of N n-dimensional random vectors; N obeys the negative binomial distribution with a parameter alpha and mean bar N. Subsequently, and n-dimensional K-distribution, with either zero or non-zero mean, is developed in the limit of infinite bar N or illuminated area. The probability density function (PDF) of the K-distributed vector normalized by its Euclidean norm is independent of the parameter alpha and is the same as that derived from a zero-mean Gaussian-distributed random vector. The above model is well supported by experimental data provided by MIT Lincoln Laboratory and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the form of polarimetric measurements.

Automatic voice recognition using traditional and artificial neural network approaches

The main objective of this research is to develop an algorithm for isolated-word recognition. This research is focused on digital signal analysis rather than linguistic analysis of speech. Features extraction is carried out by applying a Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) algorithm with order of 10. Continuous-word and speaker independent recognition will be considered in future study after accomplishing this isolated word research. To examine the similarity between the reference and the training sets, two approaches are explored. The first is implementing traditional pattern recognition techniques where a dynamic time warping algorithm is applied to align the two sets and calculate the probability of matching by measuring the Euclidean distance between the two sets. The second is implementing a backpropagation artificial neural net model with three layers as the pattern classifier. The adaptation rule implemented in this network is the generalized least mean square (LMS) rule. The first approach has been accomplished. A vocabulary of 50 words was selected and tested. The accuracy of the algorithm was found to be around 85 percent. The second approach is in progress at the present time.

Systolic architectures for vector quantization

A family of architectural techniques are proposed which offer efficient computation of weighted Euclidean distance measures for nearest-neighbor codebook searching. The general approach uses a single metric comparator chip in conjunction with a linear array of inner product processor chips. Very high vector-quantization (VQ) throughput can be achieved for many speech and image-processing applications. Several alternative configurations allow reasonable tradeoffs between speed and VLSI chip area required.
