Nimbus-7 Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) experiment data user's guide

The Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) aboard Nimbus-7 observes infrared radiation from the atmospheric limb. Global upper atmosphere temperature profiles and vertical concentrations of H2O, NO, N2O, CH4 and CO2 are derived from these measurements. The status of all channels was carefully monitored. Temperature and composition were retrieved from the measurements by linearizing the direct equation about an a priori profile and using an optimum statistical estimator to find the most likely solution. The derived temperature and composition profiles are archived on two tape products whose file structure and record formats are described in detail. The gridded retrieved temperature tape (GRID-T) contains daily day and night average temperatures at 62 pressure levels in a 2.5 degree latitude by 10 degree longitude grid extending from 67.5 degrees N to 50 degrees S. The zonal mean methane and nitrous oxide composition tape (ZMT-G) contains zonal mean day and night average CH4 and N2O mixing ratios at 31 pressure levels for 2.5 degrees latitude zones extending from 67.5 degrees N to 50 degrees S.

TOPEX/POSEIDON GPS Demonstration Experiment Data

Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) measurements obtained from the on-board TOPEX/POSEIDON demonstration flight receiver and a global network of ground receivers are available from the GPS Data Handling Facility (GDHF) archive. Ground receiver observations are derived from a six station subset of the GPS global tracking network. The six TOPEX ground stations yielded 95 percent of the expected data during the six month demonstration phase from November, 1992 to April, 1993. For the same period, 98 percent of the available P-code tracking from the TOPEX flight receiver was obtained. Raw carrier phase and P-code pseudorange measurements are provided for the ground and flight receivers along with an additional file of calibrated and compressed flight receiver data...

Analyses of requirements for computer control and data processing experiment subsystems: Image data processing system (IDAPS) software description (7094 version), volume 2

A description of each of the software modules of the Image Data Processing System (IDAPS) is presented. The changes in the software modules are the result of additions to the application software of the system and an upgrade of the IBM 7094 Mod(1) computer to a 1301 disk storage configuration. Necessary information about IDAPS sofware is supplied to the computer programmer who desires to make changes in the software system or who desires to use portions of the software outside of the IDAPS system. Each software module is documented with: module name, purpose, usage, common block(s) description, method (algorithm of subroutine) flow diagram (if needed), subroutines called, and storage requirements.

Analyses of requirements for computer control and data processing experiment subsystems. Volume 1: ATM experiment S-056 image data processing system techniques development

The solar imaging X-ray telescope experiment (designated the S-056 experiment) is described. It will photograph the sun in the far ultraviolet or soft X-ray region. Because of the imaging characteristics of this telescope and the necessity of using special techniques for capturing images on film at these wave lengths, methods were developed for computer processing of the photographs. The problems of image restoration were addressed to develop and test digital computer techniques for applying a deconvolution process to restore overall S-056 image quality. Additional techniques for reducing or eliminating the effects of noise and nonlinearity in S-056 photographs were developed.

Analyses of requirements for computer control and data processing experiment subsystems. Volume 2: ATM experiment S-056 image data processing system software development

The IDAPS (Image Data Processing System) is a user-oriented, computer-based, language and control system, which provides a framework or standard for implementing image data processing applications, simplifies set-up of image processing runs so that the system may be used without a working knowledge of computer programming or operation, streamlines operation of the image processing facility, and allows multiple applications to be run in sequence without operator interaction. The control system loads the operators, interprets the input, constructs the necessary parameters for each application, and cells the application. The overlay feature of the IBSYS loader (IBLDR) provides the means of running multiple operators which would otherwise overflow core storage.

Analysis of runaway electron driven whistler wave instability experiments

Data acquired on the DIII-D tokamak were analyzed. The data are from experiments that were conducted to study an instability that is driven unstable by intense populations of electrons with MeV energies that are known as runaway electrons. The instability is a type of plasma wave called a whistler wave that occurs at frequencies above the ion cyclotron frequency but well below the electron cyclotron frequency. The waves were measured by magnetic fluctuation coils that are embedded in the DIII-D vacuum vessel wall. After upgrades to this diagnostic were completed, new experiments were conducted on July 13, 2020 in order to measure the toroidal mode number of the whistler waves and to extend the frequency of the detected waves. Through the use of mixers, instability between 600-700 MHz was detected. (The initial experiments only measured up to 200 MHz.) Analysis of the data was led by Hari Choudhury, a PhD student at Columbia University. Mr. Choudhury has submitted two papers for publication that include contributions by UC Irvine (UCI) Professor Heidbrink and his graduated PhD student Genevieve DeGrandchamp: “Detailed Characterization of Runaway Electron Driven Whistler Waves in Low-Density DIII-D Discharges” and “First Demonstration of Resonant Pitch-Angle Scattering of Relativistic Electrons by Externally-Launched Helicon Waves.” The first paper, which has been submitted to Physics of Plasmas, has significant contributions to both the data and the interpretation by UCI scientists. In contrast, UCI contributions to the second paper, which has been submitted to Physical Review Letters, are relatively minor.

Data reduction for low energy nuclear physics experiments using data frames

Low energy nuclear physics experiments are transitioning towards fully digital data acquisition systems. Realizing the gains in flexibility afforded by these systems relies on equally flexible data reduction techniques. In this paper, methods utilizing data frames and in-memory techniques to work with data, including data from self-triggering, digital data acquisition systems, are discussed within the context of a Python package, sauce. It is shown that data frame operations can encompass common analysis needs and allow interactive data analysis. Two event building techniques, dubbed referenced and referenceless event building, are shown to provide a means to transform raw list mode data into correlated multi-detector events. These techniques are demonstrated in the analysis of two example data sets.

Small experiment, Big Data: the data production of the Muon $g-2$ Experiment

The Muon $g-2$ Experiment at Fermilab aims to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment with the unprecedented precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb). In April 2021 the collaboration published the first measurement, based on the first year of data taking. The result confirmed the previous experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and increased the long-standing tension with the Standard Model prediction to 4.2 $\sigma$. The experiment is now running the sixth year of data acquisition of positive muon data, having accumulated a total of $\sim$19 times the statistics of the BNL experiment. A collaboration-wide effort is now in place to help produce the multi-petabyte-sized data sets, a challenge typically faced by much bigger experiments. Having a quick production turnaround time is of critical importance in order to achieve a timely analysis and publication schedule. In this paper I will describe the production workflow, the former and current challenges, the resources, tools, and the future prospects of the Muon $g-2$ Experiment.
