Nondestructive Evaluation of Composites By Optical Time Domain Reflectometry

Results in the measurement of slowly varying mechanical loading functions on composites using optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) in imbedded optical fiber during both simulated manufacture and use are reviewed. First, the basic theoretical and experimental principles of the OTDR system are described. Next, the mechanical system of the composite and the imbedded fiber is analyzed. Results of measurement obtained for various loading functions applied to material specimens are then described and system limitations on spatial resolution, strain amplitude sensitivity, and frequency response are explained in terms of the range and resolution limits of the OTDR system.

MSFC Thermal Testing Lessons Learned Course. Section 3: Lessons Learned from Protoflight StarBurst Instrument Thermal Vacuum Test

MSFC thermal engineers will be presenting lessons learned while preparing and conducting thermal tests. This course will cover practical real world examples of thermal chamber and vacuum chamber testing from engineering development units to system level testing on flight hardware. Special topics include large scale testing preparation, requirement tailoring from parent documents, and cryogenic development testing.

Bifurcation of Rotating Liquid Drops: Results From USML-1 Experiments in Space

Experiments on rotational bifurcation of liquid drops, in which the drops were levitated and spun using acoustic fields in a low-gravity environment, were conducted during the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) Space Shuttle flight. The experiments have successfully resolved the discrepancies existing between the previous experimental results and the theoretical predictions. In the case of a spherical drop, for which theory exists, the results agree well with the predictions. In the case of flattened drops, the experiments have established a family of curves, with the spherical drop as the limiting case.

Formal Functional Test Designs with a Test Representation Language

The application of the category-partition method to the test design phase of hardware, software, or system test development is discussed. The method provides a formal framework for reducing the total number of possible test cases to a minimum logical subset for effective testing. An automatic tool and a formal language were developed to implement the method and produce the specification of test cases.

Survey of Supersonic Inlets for High Mach Number Applications

The various inlet design philosophies are assessed on the basis of recent experimental results obtained at Mach numbers up to 5. The basic compression systems (external, internal, and combined external-plus-internal) are compared for both Mach 4.0 turbojet and hypersonic-cruise ramjet engines. The inlet that appears best suited for the Mach 4.0 turbojet application is that with combined external-plus-internal compression. Because of the severe cooling and weight problems associated with variable geometry at hypersonic flight speeds, the fixed-geometry self-starting characteristics of external-compression systems may be the overriding factor in the selection of an inlet for the hypersonic-cruise ramjet.

A Survey of Methods for Measuring Thermally Induced Distortions of Test Articles Undergoing Solar Thermal Vacuum Test

Various methods of measuring the small thermally induced distortions experienced either by various points on the space vehicles or by deviations of surfaces from a known shape during solar thermal vacuum tests are examined. State-of-the-art application of both photographic and real time observation are discussed. The relative merits of each of the methods are compared and evaluated in their applications to different types of test articles and situations. Magnitudes of thermally induced distortions which may be expected to be routinely measurable by the various methods are presented and compared.

Satellite battery testing status

Because of the large numbers of satellite cells currently being tested and anticipated at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NAVWPNSUPPCEN) Crane, Indiana, satellite cell testing is being integrated into the Battery Test Automation Project (BTAP). The BTAP, designed to meet the growing needs for battery testing at the NAVWPNSUPPCEN Crane, will consist of several Automated Test Stations (ATSs) which monitor batteries under test. Each ATS will interface with an Automation Network Controller (ANC) which will collect test data for reduction.
