Effect of Far-Field Boundary Conditions on Boundary-Layer Transition

The effect of far-field boundary conditions on the evolution of a finite-amplitude two-dimensional wave in the Blasius boundary layer is assessed. With the use of the parabolized stability equations (PSE) theory for the numerical computations, either asymptotic, Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed boundary conditions are imposed at various distances from the wall. The results indicate that asymptotic and mixed boundary conditions yield the most accurate mean-flow distortion and unsteady instability modes in comparison with the results obtained with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions.

Far-field Lorenz-Mie Scattering in an Absorbing Host Medium. II: Improved Stability of the Numerical Algorithm

A recently developed FORTRAN program computing far-field optical observables for spherical particles in an absorbing medium has exhibited numerical instability arising when the product of the particle vacuum size parameter and the imaginary part of the refractive index of the host becomes sufficiently large. We offer a simple analytical explanation of this instability and propose a compact numerical algorithm for the stable computation of Lorenz–Mie coefficients based on an upward recursion formula for spherical Hankel functions of a complex argument. Extensive tests confirm an excellent accuracy of this algorithm approaching machine precision. The improved public-domain FORTRAN program is available at https://www.giss.nasa.gov/staff/mmishchenko/Lorenz-Mie.html.

Computation of unsteady transonic flows through rotating and stationary cascades. 3: Acoustic far-field analysis

A small perturbation type analysis has been developed for the acoustic far field in an infinite duct extending upstream and downstream of an axial turbomachinery stage. The analysis is designed to interface with a numerical solution of the near field of the blade rows and, thereby, to provide the necessary closure condition to complete the statement of infinite duct boundary conditions for the subject problem. The present analysis differs from conventional inlet duct analyses in that a simple harmonic time dependence was not assumed, since a transient signal is generated by the numerical near-field solution and periodicity is attained only asymptotically. A description of the computer code developed to carry out the necessary convolutions numerically is included, as well as the results of a sample application using an impulsively initiated harmonic signal.

Far-field acoustics of supersonic rectangular nozzles with various throat aspect ratios

The far-field acoustic behavior of supersonic jets produced by four rectangular nozzles with various throat aspect ratios are reported. One nozzle tested was designed for an exit Mach number of 1.66 with throat aspect ratio of 2.0. The remaining three nozzles (throat aspect ratios of 3.7, 5.8, 7.6) were designed for an exit Mach number of 1.35. Acoustic results presented include narrowband spectra and overall sound pressures for numerous operating pressure ratios and spatial locations.

Time-Resolved Measurements Of Laser Far-Field Patterns

Computer-controlled scanning photometric instrumentation system measures intensity pattern in far field of pulsed laser as function of time during each pulse (provided that pulse is at least 1 ns long). Such measurements important in studying dynamics of laser operation: they reveal such previously unobservable phenomena as oscillations of undesired spatial modes of radiation pattern during pulse, steering of beam during pulse, and instability of intensity of laser beam. Principal advantages of system are its relatively low cost and its ability to function under normal lighting conditions without incurring damage.

On the prediction of far field computational aeroacoustics of advanced propellers

A numerical method for determining the acoustic far field generated by a high-speed subsonic aircraft propeller was developed. The approach used in this method was to generate the entire three-dimensional pressure field about the propeller (using an Euler flowfield solver) and then to apply a solution of the wave equation on a cylindrical surface enveloping the propeller. The method is applied to generate the three-dimensional flowfield between two blades of an advanced propeller. The results are compared with experimental data obtained in a wind-tunnel test at a Mach number of 0.6.

Far-field multimodal acoustic radiation directivity

A comparison is made between approximate equations for far-field acoustic radiation patterns and exact equations for single and multimodal excitations in order to determine the validity range for the approximate approach. It is found that for single-mode cases: (1) the gross behavior of the primary lobes is adequately described by the approximate equations, (2) some error is found for lower and zero radial order modes, and (3) some agreement is yielded between exact and approximate sidelobes, although the approximate equation was not intended to simulate sidelobes. Multimodal approximate equations are compared to exact equations for various distributions of modal power; for all cases excellent agreement is found. For multimodal patterns it is noted that many modes influence the final level and shape of the directivity curve, although the major contributions are from the higher radial order modes.

Integral equation formulation for probe corrected far-field reconstruction from measurements on a cylinder

A method has been developed for far-field evaluation from measurements taken on a cylinder. The antenna and probe fields are represented by superpositions of plane waves, and two integral equations are derived whose functions are the elevation and azimuthal components of the antenna pattern. The known components are the measurements taken by either two probes or a single probe with two geometrical orientations. The convolutional nature of the integral equations makes Fourier analysis techniques applicable to a straightforward solution and an efficient computational procedure. Good agreement has been found between experimental and reconstructed patterns for both nominal and cross polarized field components.

Far-field radiation patterns of Y and T shaped arrays with Chebyshev loading

The far-field radiation patterns for Chebyshev loaded Y- and T-shaped array antennas are given for a number of cases. Included are full- and half-length loaded array arms. The goal of the investigation is to determine the effect of different Chebyshev loading arrangements on this type of array. It is found that in both the Y- and T-shaped arrays, the main lobes are defined by the shape of the array and that the level of the side-lobes is mainly dependent on the Chebyshev loading (that is, complete or partial).

Calculating far-field radiated sound pressure levels from NASTRAN output

FAFRAP is a computer program which calculates far field radiated sound pressure levels from quantities computed by a NASTRAN direct frequency response analysis of an arbitrarily shaped structure. Fluid loading on the structure can be computed directly by NASTRAN or an added-mass approximation to fluid loading on the structure can be used. Output from FAFRAP includes tables of radiated sound pressure levels and several types of graphic output. FAFRAP results for monopole and dipole sources compare closely with an explicit calculation of the radiated sound pressure level for those sources.

Time evolution of pulsed far-field patterns of GaAlAs phase-locked laser-diode arrays

The time evolution of pulsed far fields from commercially available gain-guided phase-locked arrays has been studied and compared to experimental results previously obtained by streak camera measurements, and to predictions of coupled-mode theories developed for index- and gain-guided arrays. Although phase locking is evident by 100 ps into the drive pulse, stable operation in a fixed superposition of array modes is not achieved until 1-2 ns after the drive pulse has stabilized.
