Here, we report the performance of coplanar, multifilament waveguides manufactured from crystalline films of a well-known HTS compound, YBCO, transferred to a low-loss dielectric substrate, such as E-Kapton. The coplanar two-line waveguide delivers low cross-talk, below 20 dB level, and low attenuation, below 4 dB/m at 6 GHz, 77 K. Controlled-impedance 50 Ω waveguides would require a method for reliable patterning narrow, less than 100-micron wide, YBCO traces over a meter length. We report a lithography-etching approach that minimizes the difference in the etching rate of YBCO and the metallization layers of Ag and Cu. An array of metalized vias isolates the traces. We describe the via metallization process that is not damaging to YBCO and compatible with dense, 2 mm period, arrays of vias.

Recently, filterbank multi-carrier spread spectrum (FBMC-SS) has been proposed as a candidate waveform for ultrawideband (UWB) communications. It has been noted that FBMCSS is a perfect match to this application, leading to a trivial method of matching to the required spectral mask at different regions of the world. FBMC-SS also allows easy rejection of high-power interfering signals that may appear over different parts of the UWB spectral band. In this paper, we concentrate on the use of staggered multitone spread spectrum (SMT-SS) for UWB communications. SMT makes use of offset QAM modulation to transmit data symbols over narrowband, overlapping subcarrier bands. This form of FBMC-SS is well-suited to UWB communications because it has good spectral efficiency and a flat power spectral density (PSD), resulting in good utilization of the UWB spectral mask. Additionally, we explore new methods for multi-coding that result in higher bit rates than previous FBMCSS systems. Moreover, we study methods for equalizing the UWB multipath channel and cancelling narrowband interference. Excellent performance of the proposed methods are substantiated by presenting simulation results.

In wildfires, atmospheric turbulence plays a major role in the transfer of turbulent kinetic energy. Understanding how turbulence feeds back into a dynamical system is important, down to the varying small scales of fuel structures (i.e. pine needles, grass). Large eddy simulations (LES) are a common way of numerically representing turbulence. The Smagorinsky model (1963) serves as one of the most studied sub-grid scale representations in LES. In this investigation, the Smagorinsky model was implemented in HIGRAD/FIRETEC, LANL’s coupled fire-atmosphere model. This study was motivated by the need to quantitatively investigate the vorticity budget equation in HIGRAD/FIRETEC. The Smagorinsky turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) was compared to FIRETEC’s 1.5-order TKE eddy-viscosity subgrid-scale model, known as the Linn turbulence model. This was done in simulations of flow over flat terrain with a homogeneous, cuboidal canopy in the center of the domain. Examinations of the modeled vertical TKE profile and turbulent statistics at the leading edge, and throughout the canopy, show that the Smagorinsky model provides comparable results to that of the original closure model posed in FIRETEC.

A 2D phononic pseudocrystal isolator exhibiting cyclic symmetry and radial self-similarity is measured and demonstrated to block a wide range of ultrasonic vibration. Measurements of longitudinal and shear wave blocking effects are made and compared with computational results. The use of the bandgap edge ratio is recommended for quantifying suppression in very-wide-bandgap materials. In conclusion, the upper-to-lower suppression edge frequency ratios of 3–4 are remarkably large for shear waves and even larger for longitudinal waves upper-to-lower suppression ratio (13 at 5 dB), such that 92.5% of frequencies in that range experience ≥ 5 dB of suppression.
We have built and commissioned a compact in situ 3He polarizer based on spin-exchange optical pumping for the engineering materials diffractometer, named VULCAN, at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The system achieved 78% 3He polarization with a short pump-up time constant of 2.2 h. Its first deployment in an in situ half-polarized neutron diffraction experiment on a magnetic shape memory alloy, Ni–Mn–Ga, revealed changes in magnetization coupled to deformation twinning under compression. With this new capability, VULCAN has become the first diffractometer at SNS capable of performing polarized neutron experiments, opening new opportunities to study a wider range of magnetism-related material behaviors under varied thermal, mechanical, electrical, and/or magnetic fields.
