First Wall Design of a Tokamak Pilot Plant Using a Monte Carlo Model for 3-D Heat Flux Deposition

We present a method for calculating the heat fluxes deposited on nonaxisymmetric tokamak first wall components, allowing for a first-of-its-kind model for power handling in the tokamak far scrape-off layer (SOL). The DIV3D Monte Carlo model features strict global power conservation and can calculate the finite cross-field plasma transport into magnetically-shadowed regions, which is significant when dealing with meter-scale shadows introduced by components such as poloidal limiters or antennas. As a case study, we apply the DIV3D model to inform the distribution of first wall poloidal limiters in an ARC-class reactor device. We demonstrate that discrete protection limiters can efficiently reduce peak heat fluxes on recessed breeder wall components in the presence of significant far-SOL plasma fluxes. By varying the toroidal periodicity and radial standoff depth of the limiters, we demonstrate one of the tradeoffs that must be considered in first wall design: more limiters provide greater protection, but at the cost of reduced breeding performance. We also present the impact that radial misalignments between limiters would have on first wall power loading.

Purcell enhancement of directional edge photocurrent in a van der Waals self-cavity

Cavities provide a means to manipulate the optical and electronic responses of quantum materials by selectively enhancing light-matter interaction at specific frequencies and momenta. While cavities typically involve external structures, exfoliated flakes of van der Waals (vdW) materials can form intrinsic self-cavities due to their small finite dimensions, confining electromagnetic fields into plasmonic cavity modes, characterized by standing-wave current distributions. While cavity-enhanced phenomena are well-studied at optical frequencies, the impact of self-cavities on nonlinear electronic responses—such as directional photocurrent—remains largely unexplored, particularly in the terahertz regime, critical for emerging ultrafast optoelectronic technologies. Here, we report a self-cavity-induced Purcell enhancement of directional photocurrents in the vdW semimetal WTe 2 . Using ultrafast optoelectronic circuitry, we measured coherent near-field THz emission resulting from nonlinear photocurrents excited at the sample edges. We observed enhanced emission at finite frequencies, tunable via excitation fluence and sample geometry, which we attribute to plasmonic interference effects controlled by the cavity boundaries. We developed an analytical theory that captures the cavity resonance conditions and spectral response across multiple devices. Our findings establish WTe 2 as a bias-free, geometry-tunable THz emitter and demonstrate the potential of self-cavity engineering for controlling nonlinear, nonequilibrium dynamics in quantum materials.

Thin Film Synthesis of SrZn2P2 with SrI2 Post-Annealing for Enhanced Crystallinity and Optoelectronic Quality

Ternary Zintl phosphides are promising light-absorbing semiconductors for thin-film optoelectronic applications, but strategies for controlling their microstructure and optoelectronic quality remain underexplored. Here, we report the synthesis of phase-pure SrZn2P2 thin films using radio-frequency co-sputtering in a PH3 + Ar atmosphere and investigate the impact of post-growth processing on their structural and optical properties. Grazing-incidence X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy confirm the formation of crystalline SrZn2P2 films over a finite compositional window. Optical measurements reveal clear absorption near the direct-band-gap energy (~1.8 eV) and near-band-edge photoluminescence. Further, we have studied the effects of chemically compatible halide-assisted annealing. It is found that SrI2 treatments lead to pronounced grain growth and reduced diffraction peak broadening while preserving phase purity, in contrast to rapid thermal or forming-gas annealing. Notably, annealing with SrI2 at 450 degrees C significantly enhances both the intensity and spatial uniformity of the photoluminescence, thus connecting the observed microstructural consolidation with improved radiative recombination. Our study demonstrates that halide-assisted annealing provides an effective pathway for microstructural control in SrZn2P2 thin films and highlights a generalizable processing strategy for advancing Zintl phosphide semiconductors toward optoelectronic applications.

Electrostatic‐Attraction‐Driven Self‐Assembled Graphene‐Disordered Rocksalt Composite Cathode for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Disordered rocksalt cathodes hold promise for achieving high-capacity lithium-ion batteries while using low-cost, earth-abundant elements. However, their electrochemical performance remains critically limited by their poor electronic conductivity. Conventional strategies such as high-energy ball milling with excess carbon additives can improve conductivity but remain challenging to scale and often produce defects and increase surface area, thereby accelerating capacity degradation. Herein, we report an alternative approach of electrostatic-attraction-driven self-assembly to fabricate Li 1.2 Mn 0.6 Ti 0.2 O 1.8 F 0.2 (LMTOF) particles uniformly wrapped with electronically conductive graphene sheets without associated materials degradation. The graphene-wrapped LMTOF demonstrates significantly improved cycling stability (89% capacity retention after 100 cycles) and superior rate capability compared with an LMTOF-carbon composite electrode fabricated using the conventional high-energy ball-milling process. Post-cycling analysis reveals reduced oxygen evolution, suppressed unwanted side reactions, and improved structural integrity for the graphene-LMTOF composite. This work highlights the advantages of solution-based carbon wrapping and offers a scalable strategy to prepare high-performance DRX cathodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Digital Twin Based Condition Monitoring of LCC-LCC Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems provide a flexible, hands-free charging opportunity to electric vehicles (EV). The resonant network components and the transmitter and receiver coils are often subjected to high voltages or currents. Component aging in the compensation network and coils of resonant IPT systems is detrimental to the reliability and power transfer efficiency of the IPT system. Monitoring the component health of such multi-element complex systems requires robust optimization algorithms. This paper discusses condition monitoring of a resonant IPT system for an EV charger using a digital twin model. A hybrid estimation algorithm based on genetic algorithms and adaptive particle swarm optimization is developed to estimate the parameters of the digital twin model. Simulation results are used to verify the monitoring capabilities of the developed algorithm under various operating conditions of the IPT system.
